Amy cursed as she turned the corner. “Almost out of gas.” She rolled her eyes. “And I am in the middle of nowhere.” She put her elbow on the side of the open window. “I don’t have time for this. I have a conference to get to.” She tapped on her Wayfinder. “Stupid thing, why can’t you find the interstate.”

The GPS device spoke in an irritating robotic voice. Trying to locate satellite. Please wait.

Amy took her pale hands off the wheel. “You have been saying that for the last half hour. I have been driving around in these damned woods trying to help you out.” Her long dark bangs fell in front of her face. “I don’t have any idea where I am at. Now help me get out of here already.”

Trying to locate satellite. Please wait.

“Ugh. Useless thing.” Amy turned her head, and through the gaps in her hair, she could see a large wooden sign approaching fast. “Fuck!” She quickly grabbed the wheel and slammed onto the brakes. “No, no, no!”

Her SUV skidded to a stop, the tires making an ear-wrenching sound. The sign came closer and closer, and Amy closed her eyes.  Craarck.  She opened one eye to see the large sign as it towered before her, slowly teetering back and forth. Printed on the front of it was Welcome to Helonswood. The rustic center of the United States. You will never want to leave.  The sign fell towards her vehicle and then back and forward again.

“Oh no. Please stop.” Against Amy’s please, the sign fell down and crushed the hood of her SUV. She winced at the damage. “Oh fuck.” She opened the door and walked out to the front of her vehicle. “This is just great.” She ran her hand along the dented hood. “How am I supposed to get to the conference now?” She kicked her tire. “Oww. Stupid thing.”
