Martha walked to her door as the doorbell rang. “Hold on, I am coming.” She tightened the belt on her robe as the water dripped off her pale body; she had just gotten out of the shower. The doorbell rang once more. “I am coming.” She lowered her voice. “Sheesh. Some people.”
Martha opened her heavy oak door to see a tall man in a dark suit. He nodded his pale head. “Good day Miss Tessmic.”
She tightened her robe, staring at him with her green eyes. “What do you want?”
He handed her a paper. “My name is Renolds, and I represent the Goodman Company. We are sorry to inform you that you will have to evacuate the premises by the end of the day.”
“What?” She straightened her long blonde hair.
“The Goodman Company has bought up all the property on this block.”
Martha formed her hand into a fist. “But I live here. You can’t just force me out.”
He held up his hands. “Look, lady, it is out of my hands. The bulldozers will be here tomorrow.” He turned around. “Look, I am sorry.”
“Go to hell.” She slammed the door on him.
Martha turned around and leaned against the door. “What am I going to do now? I don’t have the money to go anywhere else. My brothers hate my guts, and they are halfway across the country.” She sighed. “I would be lucky to get a room at a motel tonight. This is a nightmare.”
She slowly walked into the next room. “I guess I should try and see if I can find a place I can stay at for the next few days while I figure things out.” Martha’s eyes fell on a strange box that was sitting on her countertop. “Where did that come from?”
She walked over and picked up the box. There was a label on it. “To Martha. Inside is something that will help. From someone who cares.”
She opened the box and found a bunch of cookies inside. “That is strange.” She picked one of them up. “I wonder why someone would just send me a bunch of baked goods. Is this a joke? I am getting kicked out of my home.” Martha sighed. “Well, at least I have a nice little snack.”
She took a small bite out of one of the cookies. “Mhmm.” Martha then set the box down and crossed her arms. “I need to focus. I need to get the essentials all in one place.” She held her hand to her head. “Ugh, my heart is racing all of a sudden.”
She reached out to steady herself. “My skin feels like rubber.” She placed her hand on the table and felt her fingers slide off the edge. “Ugh, I am slipping.”
Martha down and noticed the countertop was smaller than it had been a moment ago. “I grew.” She ran her fingers over her body, almost letting her robe drop to the floor. “I grew almost three feet.” She looked down at the box of cookies. “What did they do to me?”
She picked up the box. “I can’t believe this is real.” She looked around the room. “I wonder if this is permeant. I am barely going to be able to get my clothes on now. I better not take any more of these.” She set the box back down on the counter. “I wonder why anyone would send cookies that make me grow to me. How could these help me?”
Martha’s eyes widened. “Oh my. My troubles are over. If I eat these, I can chase those pesky home wreckers away tomorrow.” She picked up the box and kissed the side. “I love you. I love you. I love you.”
Martha headed up to her bedroom to get dressed for the day. “I will save the rest of you for tomorrow. Until then I have some shopping to do. I need some better fitting clothes in the meantime.”

The next day Martha awoke with a smile on her face. She slowly swung her long legs off the bed and sat up as she looked at the cookie box on her dresser. “Good morning, my good luck charm.” She then stood up, her head hitting the ceiling. “Oops. I forgot. I am a bit bigger than I used to be.”
She went to her dresser and put on the clothing that she bought the other day: a plain t-shirt that didn’t quite fit but covered her well enough and black leggings. She then picked up the box, cradled it in her left elbow, and went downstairs.
As she reached the bottom step, Martha heard the doorbell ring. She slowly made her way over to the door, humming to herself.
When she opened the door, she saw the same man from yesterday, along with a young policewoman and half a dozen construction workers. The man in the suit scratched at his bald head. “Umm, it is time for you to leave the premises.”
Martha crossed her arms. “Sorry, but I am not going anywhere.”
“This officer will escort you off our property if need be. You have five minutes to get your things.” He closed the door in her face.
Martha sighed. “I am not going anywhere.” She opened the box of cookies. “And you are going to make sure of that.”
She walked into the living room and sat down.
“I need to play this right. I can’t just grow inside my house as then I will be trapped or worse, I might wreck the very thing I am trying to protect.” She tapped her finger on her chin.
“I can have the cookies as I leave the house, but how many should I eat?” Martha looked down at the box. Ten cookies were sitting in the container, one with a slight bite taken out of it. “That small bite made me grow about three feet, but there is no telling how big I will get from the rest of the cookie or rest.”
Martha sighed. “I want to defend my house but not become so big that I can’t fit inside it. Ugh, I wish I knew more about this.”
There was a knock at her door. “Martha? It is time. Don’t make us come in there.”
She picked up the box and headed for the door.
Before she opened it, she slipped the partially eaten cookie into her mouth.
When she opened the door, Renolds sighed. “Do you not have anything that you are bringing with you?”
Martha stepped out so she wasn’t standing under the doorframe, and then crossed her arms. “I am not going to let you take my home.”
Renolds. “Officer. Can you take this trespasser away?”
Martha felt a strange sensation fill her body as the young officer reached out to cuff her. She watched as Renolds and the officer began to shrink before her eyes. Renolds took a few steps back once he saw Martha starting to grow.
Renolds looked at the officer. “What are you doing? Cuff her.”
She looked at him with a dumbfounded look. “She is almost twice my size.
What do you want me to do?”
Martha smiled as she continued to grow. I love how my body feels as I grow. She looked down at Renolds. “I want you to leave my property.”
Renolds shook his head. “We can’t do that. I don’t care how big you are.”
Martha’s body suddenly stopped growing. She looked around, and she was almost as tall as her house. “Wow.” She looked back down at Renolds and crossed her arms. “I am not going anywhere.”
“We are tearing down this building no matter what.” He turned around. “Knock the building down now.”
One of the workers cried out. “What about that giant lady?”
“She was given her time,” Renolds said as he walked away. “She is now an obstacle like anything else.”
The bulldozers began to move forward. Martha planted her feet onto the ground. “I won’t let you destroy my house.” When the first vehicle reached her, she pushed against it. Yet even at her new size, she was no match for the machinery that slowly pushed her towards her house.
“No. I won’t let you.”
Martha looked around for the cookie box; she needed to grow again. She spotted it just inside the doorway. “I need a cookie now, or my house is lost.” She spun around and picked up the box. But the box was too small for her to fit her hand in and grab a cookie. “Ugh, I don’t have time for this.”
She lifted the box high over her head and let all the cookies drop into her mouth. She immediately felt the results, her body growing the instant the cookies hit her stomach. She turned around and watched as the world began to shrink around her. “Try and push me out now.”
Martha quickly grew above her house. She pushed away the construction vehicles with ease, causing the workers to run away.
“Where are you going?” Renolds cried out. “You can’t let this stop you. We have a job to do.”
Martha bent over and picked Renolds up. “Hey, what are you doing?”
He was hard for her to hold as she continued to grow. “I will keep you for later. I am not done with you.” She slid him into her leggings pocket. She could feel him squirm inside her clothing. She then turned her attention to the bulldozers that had threatened her home. They now looked like toys, one of which was pressing against her growing shoe.
“Such annoying little playthings.” She stepped down and crushed the closest vehicle with her foot. “How do you expect to push me out of my house with such feeble things?”
She then bent down and picked up the remaining vehicles. “I am sick just looking at these things. Even if you are shrinking in my hands.”
She crushed the two in her right hand and the ones in her left she tossed as far as she could over the horizon. Martha then brushed her hands. “That is taken care of.”
She looked down at her tiny house. “But what am I going to do now? I am growing out of control. In moments I won’t be able to see the very home I was trying to protect. What if I step on my house by mistake?” She shook her head as it passed through a cloud bank. “What if I never stop growing? What will I do for food? I mean, I could use a lake as my own personal drinking supply, but I still need to eat. I am not sure I thought this through.”
She suddenly stopped growing. Martha looked out over the landscape, able to see the neighboring county districts. “I must be a good five hundred, no six, no seven hundred feet tall.” She shook her massive head. “I wish I had some measuring stick for my body.”
Martha knelt down and gently picked up her house. “I may not be able to fit inside you anymore, but I can take you with me.” She slid it inside her pocket.
“Oops.” She remembered that she had left Reloads in there as well. She carefully fished around and picked him out. He was so tiny now, barely able to fit onto her fingertip.
“Hey, put me down. I am freezing up here.”
“Don’t worry, I will. But you have to do something for me first.”
He fought to keep on her finger. “What? Anything. Just let me down.”
“You dissolve the Goodman Company before they take anyone else’s land.”
“I can’t do that.”
Martha slowly cleaned her fist.
“Ok, ok. I will see what I can do.”
Martha smiled. “Good.”
“Now, will you let me down? I am terrified of heights.”
She looked around at a nearby lake. “Oh, don’t worry, I will.” She took two steps over to the body of water, bent down, so her hand was about fifty feet over the lake, and dropped Renolds. “I think you can handle things from here.”
Martha then stood up. “Ok then. Now what?” She crossed her arms. “I am not really sure what to do with myself now. I am just so big now.” She sighed as she looked at the horizon. “I guess I will look for someplace that I can call my own.” She looked down. “Maybe someplace that I don’t have to worry about stepping on people’s houses every second of my life.”
Martha set out, heading east looking for a new place to call home.
