Fired part 2

I awoke to the sound of a roaring engine. I raised my head, trying to make sense of my situation. I was still wearing my work outfit for the Jenney Downs Department store.    What was the last thing to happen to me? I needed to remember.

The vehicle I was in hit a bump in the road, and I was sent flying, hitting a canvas top above my head before falling back down, slamming hard onto the metal floor. I shook my head as I pushed the hair from covering my eyes. “Oww. Well, one thing is for sure. I am in the back of someone’s pick up.”

I pushed up against the canvas, but it held firm. There was no way I would be able to get out of the truck on my own terms.  Am I being kidnapped? What is going on?

I looked around to try and get my barring’s; I had to squint due to the lack of light. There was a toolbox at one end of the vehicle. Judging by the dents, the owner didn’t take good care of the box, or I had been hitting my head against the chest. I also noticed massive metal restraints, but they were far too large to contain me. “Why are they here if I am being kidnapped? This doesn’t make sense.”

And then it hit me as the truck turned, and I slid into the side of the vehicle. I had been fired from my job, during which I had an unexpected transformation into a snake. I looked at myself now, and I appeared to be back to normal.  That is one good thing. Why did that even happen, though? I didn’t have any control over that. Usually, my transformation and size changes come from Fredricks Fancy products, but that just happened for no reason.

But I had been trying to keep my job to avoid financial troubles, which now I may have to endure. I hope that the Fredricks Fancy job that I have would be enough to sustain myself going forward.  But why am I stuck here?

The truck came to a stop. I moved to the front, trying to discern what I could about my situation as my foggy memory wasn’t doing me justice. Through the canvas, I could hear metal music blaring. I sneered.  Ugh, I can’t stand metal.  I tried to block the music out to see if I could listen to anything else that would tell me where I was. Besides the awful music, I could hear a ragged male voice signing horribly along with the vocals. Though it pained me, I listened to his voice, trying to remember who it was. I had heard his voice somewhere before.  Renolds.

Then more came back to me. I had been trying to hide the fact that I had been late from my old boss Gregory in an attempt to save my job. Renolds had been doing the same thing, but then my transformation occurred, and I was fired. But that wasn’t the end of it. Renolds attacked me, and I blacked out. “That jerk said he was going to get rid of me. I have to get out of here.”

I also remembered that my “friend” Carien said she would stick up for me and promptly left me to be fired and kidnapped. Well, so much for her help.

I returned my attention to trying to listen to my surroundings. I had to figure something out about where I was, not just about who I was stuck with. After a few more painful minutes of listening to Renolds sing, I heard the faint sound of birds, seagulls to be exact. That meant two things, either we were driving around some parking lot where those annoying birds liked to flock to and steal my snacks, or he was driving me out to the beach. I would have to stake my bet on the ladder.

I pushed myself away from the driver's side of the vehicle, no longer able to stomach the music. I needed to find a way out of my situation.  If only I had a Fredricks Fancy product on me right now. I could try and grow or shrink my way out of here or at the very least have some transformation that would befit me. Something to get me out of this mess.  I sighed.

And if these things are happening for no reason now, why can’t I just grow suddenly right now. Let me get out of here.

The truck started to vibrate. The shaking was subtle at first, but each thud caused the vehicle to vibrate with more ferocity each time. I looked around, wondering what could be causing these mini earthquakes.

The truck came to a sudden halt, and I fell flat onto my face once more, my hair getting into my eyes. “Renolds is a horrible driver.”

Through the tarp, I could hear his muffled voice, “What the hell is that sound?” He turned off the engine, and I heard a door slam. “It sounds like something is coming. . . holy crap.” I heard the door slam shut again as Renolds tried to get the engine to start. “Come on, you piece of shit. Start.” The truck roared to life. Renolds wasted no time speeding off; the sudden movement caused me to slide back and hit the vehicle's back wall.  I am getting sick of being a ping pong ball around here.

The earthquakes increased and now sounded like thunder. My body constantly bounced up and down within the confines of my small prison, and I quickly gained many minor bruises.

Whatever was happening, I wish that it would come to an end so I could just rest.

Suddenly, the vehicle's rear end went flying upwards; I slid down into the toolbox, thankfully landing on my rear end. Still, my body was sore from the impact. Seconds later, the truck landed down with a thud and sped off, only to be stopped a moment later. The tires dug furiously into the dirt as some mysterious force kept the vehicle rooted in place. Renolds swore from the driver’s seat. “Come the fuck on, move, you stupid piece of shit.”

The tires' sound digging into the earth stopped, but the truck was only moving slightly from one side to the other, nor had Renolds stopped the truck. I took in a few deep breaths of air, trying not to panic. Something was going on, something scary that I couldn’t see. Whatever it was, I hoped that the outside force wouldn’t find me trapped in the flatbed and would just focus on Renolds. Don’t make any sudden movements. You will be fine, Sarah.

There was a sudden blow to the front of the truck, causing the engine to cut out. I once again went flying into the canvas above me and then again hitting the metal floor. I slowly pushed myself up. “I am getting sick of bouncing around back here.”

Renolds voice rang out, much clearer now with the engine noises silenced. “My truck.

How dare you?”

Who is he talking to?

A massive feminine voice responded, threatening to shatter my eardrums.

“Where is Sarah? I know you took her.”

“Let me down, and I will tell you. I promise.”

The truck was suddenly shaken, and I bounced around yet again. “You will tell me now if you don’t want to end up a stain on the ground.”

“Ok, ok. She is in the back. I have tied down.”

The tarp above my head suddenly ripped off, and I found myself staring into Cariens eyes, but there were massive. She was a giant. She looked down at me with her enormous blue eyes, a smile on her face. “I am glad you are alright.”

I took in slow, steady breaths, she was holding the vehicle I was in high above the ground. “Carien, you are, umm.”

“Gorgeous as always? I know.”

“Umm, that isn’t what I was going to say.”

“Look, I came to save you. Aren’t you happy?”

I didn’t know what to think. Carien was standing before me, a hundred or two hundred feet tall. This was just so sudden. I didn’t even know that anyone else could change in size like this; I thought I had been the only one.

Renolds voice broke the moment. “Hey, I told you where she was. Now, will you let me down?”

I saw Carien’s face darken. “You kidnapped Sarah, and you expect me to just let you go?”

“Hey, I wasn’t going to do anything to her.”

Carien ripped off the roof of the truck and then threw it as if a piece of cardboard. I watched as it landed; the top skipped across the water a reasonable distance from where Carien was standing.

Renolds held up his hands. “Hey, what are you doing?”

“I heard what you wanted to do to Sarah. You wanted to get rid of her because she is different. Because she changes in size and such, is that right.” Renolds didn’t answer, so Carien shook the truck, causing me to hold on for dear life.

“Right!”

“Yes.”

“Well, I am just like her. Fredricks Fancy products cause me to change in size and transform. Am I a freak, Renolds? Am I?”

“No, you are not.”

She picked him up between her fingers. “I feel someone like you should get what you deserve. Should I drop you? At this height, I think you might splat. I mean, I am what, hundred and fifty feet tall or so? I forget to measure myself after I grew to chase you down, but I feel that is about right. Somethings you just know. But I also know is that it will be deserving to see you land on the ground when I drop you.”

“No, no, please don’t.”

“No, you are right. Maybe I should throw you. Maybe I could see if I could get you into orbit.”

I started to climb onto Cariens arm. I had to put a stop to this. Carien can’t hurt him even if Renolds is an asinine jerk.  I used her jacket to climb up her arm, the loose threads acting as footholds. “Hurry up, Sarah. You have to climb like you haven’t before in your life. Oh, what am I saying? I haven’t climbed anything before. I even chickened out of the rock climbing challenge at camp. I hate this.”

Renolds was still trying to plead his case. “If you let me go, I will get you anything you want.”

“And what could you give me?”

I climbed up onto Carien’s shoulder, pausing to wipe sweat from my brow. I looked down over Carien’s shoulder and, in the twilight, could barely see the ground below.

I fell onto the padded ground below me, clutching the soft fabric for dear life. “Ok, looking down as a bad idea. I liked things better when I was the one becoming big.”

This high up, I could just hear Renolds yammer on. “I have money. Five thousand in the bank. I could give it to you.”

Carien rolled her head, making it hard to stay on her body. “Please, I don’t want your money.”

“I will promise to leave you and Sarah alone.”

“I can make sure of that myself.”

Climbing up the strands of Cariens hair, I pulled myself up towards her ears. Once there, I yelled with all my might, “Carien, wait.”

She twisted around. “Sarah?”

I lost my grip, falling. “Crap.” I fell for a few moments before landing in Cariens soft hand.

“Don’t worry. I have you.” After the brief moment of concern had passed, she narrowed her eyes at me. “What were you trying to do? You could have slipped and fallen. You should have just waited where it was safe.”

“I can’t let you hurt Renolds.”

“But he might have killed you.”

“I don’t care. Being that big isn’t an excuse to hurt people.”

Carien’s eyes darted from one side to the other as she thought about what to do. I looked down to her other hand, where Renolds truck dangled delicately. All she had to do was loosen her grip, and he would fall down into a fiery heap.

Eventually, Carien said, “Ugh, I will let him go for you, Sarah. But I am stranding him out on the lake island. Hold on, I am going to put you onto my shoulder. Hold on this time as I don’t want to fish you out of the lake.” She raised me up to her shoulder, and I climbed back onto her jacket. Once settled, Carien sighed. “Ok, Renolds, let's go. If it wasn’t for Sarah, I would have just crushed you under my foot or something.”

Carien then walked out towards the shore and waded into the water. I held on for dear life as Carien took every step, unwilling to look down again.  The sooner I can get off of Carien and onto solid ground, the better. This is making me hate heights.

Once out at the lake island, Carien dropped Renolds truck onto the sand. She then stormed off towards the shore. “There, I didn’t “hurt” him, Sarah. But he still got what was coming to him.”

“Ok, now can you let me down?”

Carien laughed. “Maybe you should wait until we are back over dry land first.”

I sighed. “Carien, how did this happen?”

“What do you mean?”

“Are you serious? How did you grow this big?”

Carien shrugged, and I had to hold on as her arms move to avoid falling into the waters below. “Same thing that has been happening to you. I have been having the side effects from the Fredricks Fancy products.”

“If that is true, why hasn’t anyone noticed?”

Carien made her way back onto dry land and then sat down. She then plucked me off her shoulder and held me in her hands just in front of her face. I felt a bit awkward being in this position. “I made sure to hide what was going on. After I had my first shrinking incident in my house, I knew what was going on. I had seen what had happened to you at work, and well, the Fredricks Fancy company has done a great job of publishing your many, many mishaps.”

I sighed. “I know.”

“Well, I don’t exactly want my face to be published like yours, even if it is exhilarating to be this size. I just don’t want all the attention you have been getting.”

“I don’t exactly want that attention either. I just don’t know how to get rid of it.” I crossed my arms.

“Anyways, after I saw that Renolds was going to try and hurt you, I took a drink to try and stop him. I lucked out and grew to this size, and well, the rest is history. I couldn’t let anyone hurt you.” She rubbed my head with her pinky finger.

I pushed her finger off of me. “Carien, thank you for trying to save me, but we need to talk.”

“About what?”

I took a deep breath. “Before you said I am your girlfriend. I don’t know if we are even there yet.”

“Is it something I did or?”

“No, it’s just that this is moving too fast. I like you and all, but I just found out you have romantic feelings for me, and now you can change in size like me as well. It is a lot to take in. I think we need to talk about where to go to make sure our relationship will stay intact.”

Her giant eyes looked down towards the ground. “I knew I shouldn’t have said anything.”

“No, that isn’t it. Ugh, I am bad with my words in these situations. Look, I would want to still see you and see where things go, but just not take this too quickly, too fast.”

“So like have a first date or something.”

“Um, sure.”

“I can live with that, darling.”

“Ok, now that is settled, can you put me down? I am getting a bit nauseous being up here. I am having flashbacks to when I was a few inches high and was stuffed inside Gregory’s pocket.”

“Ok.” She slowly lowered me onto the ground. “Is that better?”

I dusted myself off. “Yes, this is fine.” I looked around at the darkening landscape around me and the endless miles of rolling hills and farmland. I was miles away from where I lived and had no actual transportation to get home. I looked back up at Carien. “Umm, can you maybe take me home?”

She smiled. “Of course I can.” She held out her hand. “Here, get on.”

I climbed back onto her hand; once on, she raised me up onto her shoulder. She then gave me a slight nudge with her head before saying, “Settled in?”

I pulled the fabric of her jacket into a knot around my waist to act as a makeshift seat belt. “Yes.”

Carien started heading for my house. I found it amazing that I was no longer alone, that I wasn’t the only one dealing with the side effects of the Fredricks Fancy products. The last few months of my life had been so weird, and I thought I couldn’t talk to anyone about what I had been through. Sure, I could speak to the Fredricks Fancy Company and possibly Fredrick himself as he seemed to be aware of what was happening to me, but that wasn’t the same. Just because they knew their products cause me to change in size and shape wasn’t the same as actually knowing what I was going through. But now I had someone that could fully understand, that wouldn’t scoff off my experiences as some crazy lucid dream.

I just wish she could have told me about this sooner. I would have taken some of the stress of this situation off just having someone to listen to. I mean, if I could have talked to her when my ex Matt accused me of tearing his house down when I didn’t. . .

I blinked. I had just remembered that detail from the day I had been fired. Before I had gone try and avoid Gregory’s wrath, I had run into Matt, and he had yelled about me becoming a giant and tearing into his house. But I hadn’t done anything.

“Carien.”

“Yes?”

“Did you do something to Matt’s house?”

She was silent for a moment. “Why do you ask?”

“Because on my way to Jenny Downs on the day I was fired, Matt confronted me and said I tore into his house as revenge for him inflating me before and ruining an interview. The only thing is I didn’t. I am very cross with him for costing me that job, but I wouldn’t risk jail time. My face is plastered on commercials all over the country.”

Carien sighed. “I might have gotten a bit big and drunk and done something.”

“What?”

“I just lose it a bit when people want to hurt you.”

I turned my head as my face turned red. “Carien. . .”

“I know you are not happy with what I did.” Lights appeared in the distance as we came closer to town and my house. “But I had to do something.”

“I know what that is like. It reminds me of how I felt about trying to expose Fredrick's products. I am not saying what you did is right, but just try to keep things reigned in next time for me?”

Carien smiled. “I will try.”

A few moments later we arrived at my house. Carien raised her hand up, and I jumped on my elevator. Seconds later, I was at the front of my door, having jumped off my friends’ palm. I turned around to see Carien kneeling by me. “So when do you want to go on that date?”

“I will call you. I need to digest today and let you shrink down first.”

She laughed. “Fine, fine. I will talk to you later.” She stood up and walked off.

I sighed. My heart was still racing. “I can’t believe how today worked out. At first, I had a crazy employee trying to off me, and then my friend saved me, who turns out has the same size-changing issues as me. I just can’t believe this.” I turned around to head into the house, taking a quick look at the driveway. I then noticed something vital. “My car is still at the mall.

Shit.”
