Part 1:
"Are you serious?"
"Absolutely. This shoe wasn't always just a shoe. It used to be a woman."
"And she's still alive?"
Edna could hardly believe her luck. She had heard of people who had been transformed into inanimate objects, and she had dreamed of finding such an object, but never in a million years had she expected to find one here. She was only in the store because her heel broke on the heels she had been wearing, and the boss sent her out to find a replacement so she could avoid hobbling around the office or walking around in stocking feet, neither of which was permitted.
"So, is she still alive?"
"I don't know about alive," said the salesgirl, "but she's aware any way. She can feel and smell and taste and things like that, but she can't move on her own or talk or any of that kind of stuff.”
"Like, she can feel my foot, right now, as I'm trying her on?"
The salesgirl nodded with a little laugh. "Oh, absolutely."
"I wonder if she enjoyed it." Edna took the shoe and examined it for any clue that there was a human consciousness inside it. But nothing gave it away."
"I don't know," said the salesgirl. "I know I'd hate it, being slipped on and off of sweaty feet all day." The girl paused and smiled apologetically. "No offense, ma'am."
"None taken. I know nylons aren't the most pleasant fragrance after a long day on my feet."
Part 2:
Here it comes. Sally thought since she couldn't speak. The woman had stopped looking at her so closely and was now moving her inert form to her stocking-clad foot. Any moment now, she would once again be stepped into and pressed firmly against the floor. Even tromped about in while the woman-Edna, Sally thought she had heard the name called, though it didn't matter, since the woman had no interest in her as a companion or even remotely human, just a shoe-decided if Sally's new body fit her comfortably enough.
Heard. Sally thought with a quick remembrance. The salesgirl had mentioned smell, taste, and touch, but she had forgotten sight and hearing, not that it made any sense. Without eyes and ears, there was only the magic to make it happen. For that matter, she had no tongue or nose either, so neither smell nor taste made any sense either. But there she was somehow experiencing it anyway.
And sure enough, Sally soon felt her body squeezed nutward from the inside and pressed down by what felt like a little more than a hundred pounds of pressure. Either she would be bought or she was put stored away in the stock room again to be tried on by another woman. And even if she wore, the life she knew before the transformation was over. Even then, it would continue between days of being worn and days of sitting around useless in a new owner's closet
Part 3:
"I'll take her. I mean it. I mean them." Edna said.
"I'm glad. This poor thing has been through the rounds. It's a tough color to match, and no matter how many of you have come through and tried her own, she always gets left behind. I bet she's probably happy to finally find a new home"
"Wonderful," Edna almost squealed. "Box her up, please, and I'll also take a pair of the dull brown ones that look like her to wear back to the office."
