Ever since moving onto our street, I’ve heard rumors about our neighbor Ms. Hensley. Hanging out with some of the teens around us I heard such tales of how, if you went on her property, she’d transform you into something for her own personal use or how a couple years back she transformed a boy into one of her lawn chairs for accidentally throwing a football into her yard.
Knowing that magic isn’t real it was hard to believe that some random middle-aged lady could be able to turn someone into an inanimate object. All the kids around would be nervous around her house but not me, no. What was the worst thing she’d do to me, yell at me? No, I would always walk past her house without a single worry. Everyone around thought I was crazy but at least I wasn’t crazy enough to think that magic was real. Day after day I would do so, hell sometimes I’d walk directly walk over her yard, much to the shock of everyone around.
Nothing happened until one day, as I was walking across her lawn Ms. Hensley suddenly appeared on her porch. It freaked me out a little, but she was just a normal woman after all. Just as I was getting off her property she called out to me “Little girl,” keep in mind I’m a high school senior, “Come over here right this instant.” Looking back I was faced with her scornful eyes, her face filled with deep anger.
Walking over to her she grabbed my arm and brought me to her backyard. Weirded out, I watched as she sat down on a lawn chair and pulled off one of her sandals. “What makes you think that you can walk across other people's yards like that?” I tried to answer but I couldn’t, it seemed like my words got caught in my throat. “Let me guess, you heard all those rumors about me and decided to blow right past them. Well, there is a reason why everyone on this street fears me. I’m a witch after all.”
I wanted to laugh, this lady was crazy. “Don’t believe me, well I bet this’ll make you.” She flicked her wrist and suddenly the chair she was sitting on started speaking. It was a male voice. No, she couldn’t be a witch. Even as I connected the dots between the rumor I heard and the voice before me I tried to dissuade that idea.
“I bet this will make you truly believe me.” Suddenly I went from standing in front of her to looking out at where I once was. I felt two fingers grabbing around the top of my head, almost like they were holding onto a strap. Wait, didn’t the sandal in her hand have straps, there was no way, right? “Oh yes dear, you’re now my sandal. Normally I would punish you with something light like a stay as my rug but seeing as every you walked carelessly over my property I think that it’s mine turn to walk over your carelessly. Enjoy being my new shoe, and being a new rumor, dear.”
I could do nothing as she unlatched me and stuck her foot inside me. Her rough sole pressed into my imprinted insole, her toes taunting me as they settled into place. I could taste her sole and my own, vile body all over me, as if my tongue was my whole body. The taste, a mix of sweat, dirt, and grime. As she took her first step in me the realization that this was probably how I was going to spend the rest of my existence set it. I never expected I was going to spend the rest of my life as the sandal for a witch.
