This takes place from Fernando/Daisy's perspective before V-LARP was a thing, in chapter 1. And during V-LARP 4, in chapter 2.
Chapter 1- Beauty and the beast-kin
Mages.
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, everyone needs ‘em. And In a Venn Machine society you can, by appearances at least, be ‘em. Especially in fantasy themed Venn events like V-LARP.
Daisy, a catboy enthusiast, was ecstatic when Sally told her about Larping after a D&D session one day. Particularly, the beast-kin race that was available at the one Sally went to.
“Come with me this weekend.” she said. “I’ll drive you, and you can see if you enjoy it.” she said.
And, oh, how she had been right. Daisy decided to go as a human character to begin with, as she wasn’t sure how Larping worked. She learned the ropes quickly though, and her first Larp had been a success.
For the next month, Daisy had gotten her hands on a cat ear headband, and a cat tail belt. The Larp website forums had good recommendations on where to buy stuff to look like a Beast-kin. The event had even gotten sponsored by the company that sold that kind of stuff, at one point.
It was a shame, however. Such businesses were growing rarer and rarer as time went on. The Venn Machines had appeared several years ago, magical(?) boxes that could transform people into other people, things, or even objects. And if you knew what you were doing, you could transform objects without changing the person.
All that aside, it meant two things for Daisy. The things she just bought were pretty much collectors items at this point. Secondly, she wouldn’t get to use them, because the second session she was going to had changed the event from ‘Larp’, to ‘V-Larp’. Which is to say, they were incorporating Venn Machines into Larping now.
On the one hand, this meant she had lost money. On the other, she could finally be the catboy she had always dreamed of.
Sally had met Daisy the second time she went, and helped design her character based on a very good piece of art Daisy had drawn. Sally didn’t question why the catboy was naked in the picture, but made sure Daisy’s character would be just as ‘anatomically accurate’.
“Alright, Daisy. You’ve used one of these before right?” asked Sally.
“Well, no. I never had someone I could trust…” Daisy replied solemnly.
“You have me, Daze.” Sally liked giving people nicknames.
“Well yeah, but you live a whole town over. And I don’t have the money to pay for petrol” just because I want to be a catboy every other day.”
“You could just make the trip once, it does 3 years.” Sally gestured to the white box.
“Nah, tempting. But you know how it is with iris scanners at my job.”
“They need to get with the times. As long as you can do the work, what’s the problem, y’know?”
“I agree, but it is how it is. Come on, it’s our turn.” Daisy said, moving up to the Venn Machine.
“Ah, don’t use money. Venn machines take anything.” Sally stopped Daisy’s hand, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a button. Probably from an old blouse.
She popped the button in the slot, and tapped the symbol of the Earth 3 times. The doors, vacant spaces really, appeared on the side of the box.
“C’mon, I have the picture you sent me committed to memory, let's turn you into a catboy.” Sally stepped up into the box.
Daisy entered the other side of the box, and the doors closed. Inside there was a shimmering interface, a red button by where the door would be, and a green button on the far side - opposite the door.
In the shimmering interface, she could see an Image of Sally on the other side. The interface isn’t glass or anything, but if you didn’t know better, you’d think it was. On the display was a bunch of bubbles. Displaying various random things, creatures, and subtle body modifications.
“Um, so how should I change you, Sal?” Daisy asked, noticing Sally had already begun muttering things at the interface and tapping her side of it.
“Oh, say…actually I can't say it because it will ruin what I'm doing. Think of that one subject in school that is about the past.”
“History?” as Daisy said it, the interface for Sally changed to display a bunch of new bubbles, these contained various forms. Chocolate bar, Ice cream, some kind of pirate version of Sally that was way more in shape. And a few other smaller bubbles, one being a tiny Sally that looked all pink, and another that looked like a pair of shoes. That bubble was the smallest.
“Oh wow, I see a bunch of new things on the display.”
“Yeah, that’s the…um, past feature. Things I've been before. Pick the pirate one.”
“One of the bubbles is so tiny compared to the rest.” Daisy asked, tapping the pirate one, which she noticed changed Sally on the display to resemble her choice.
“Ah, yeah, the less you use it, the smaller the bubble gets until it’s replaced with something else.”
“So you haven't been shoes in a while?”
“It really sucks. I didn’t know that at the time, and was experimenting…” Sally took a moment to shiver at the memory.
“Ah, I think I read about that being the case online. So what now?”
“Now, I'm adding the finishing touches. What clothes do you want?”
“Something intelligent. Glasses, a half robe, boots…like a scholar type.” Daisy pondered, trying to imagine it.
“You got it…” Sally began muttering commands and tapping the interface, gradually finding the perfect look.
“So…you’ve been Ice cream and Chocolate a lot?” asked Daisy with amusement.
“Ye shall not speak of it, lest I turn you to toilet paper.” jokingly warned Sally.
“Seriously, no judgments, just curious what it was like.”
“...nice. Like, really sensual when you’re being licked, and the melting...” She paused, blushing at the memories.
“Oh, your boyfriend must be very happy.”
“...actually it’s my job.” Sally said, tapping bubbles with a frown. She just could not get the shape of glasses she wanted Daisy to have.
“Oh…that’s a thing?”
“Seen as taboo by a lot of people, but yeah, it’s a thing. Usually they go the ingredient route, but where I am doesn’t make stuff on site.” Sally sighed in relief, and tapped another part of the interface. “It’s a kind of weight loss therapy. Lets people stuff themselves without gaining weight.”
“Interesting, maybe I'll pop in to give you a taste.” Daisy licked her lips.
Sally blushed slightly harder. “...anyway I'm done. So, press the green button now.”
They both pressed the green buttons, applying each other's changes. Sally had become a slim and athletic version of herself, but with fiery red hair, and wearing a pirate outfit.
And Daisy…Daisy had what she wanted. It took him a minute to adjust to his new gender, first of all. By then Sally had walked out the booth and around to her side.
“You good, Daze?”
“Wow…” said Daisy in his lower masculine voice.
“Uh?”
“Just…wow…” he repeated, examining his arms and looking down at his body.
“Come on, we’ve held up the line long enough, let's get you to the mirror.” Sally said, leading Daisy to the nearby Mirror. Pretty much every Venn Machine had one installed nearby for Venners.
“Good god…” Daisy marveled at the catboy in the reflection. “I’m hot…”
Sally chuckled. “If you say so, shortie.”
“Oh yeah…I’m actually smaller now, lost a few inches I think.”
“That you did, beast-kin are shorter than the rest of the races. Still have to be between 4’8 and 5’4 for males. The females are 4’5 to 5’2. Otherwise it’s not canon. Reminds me of this one time I met an Elf who...”
Daisy listened to Sally waffle about it while he admired his new look. He had short, but not too short, orange hair. Cat ears with white inner fluff, and orange fur. He had a bright orange tail, with a white furred tip. His hair, ears, and tail had black fur stripes. He was like a tiger. His ears twitched, and his tail swayed, real. Actual real animal parts. He checked the side of his head for his human ears, and found only hair. Weird, but at least there isn't some bald patch with flat skin.
“...which is why you should never mess with a drunk Orc.” Sally said, finishing her tirade.
“Uh huh. And I’m...all male?” asked Daisy, still fawning over his features.
“Anatomically accurate.” Sally grinned, glancing downward.
“Oh, why is it doing…oh god, that’s weird, why is it so…” Daisy blushed looking at a very obvious mound in her trousers.
“AnatomIcally. Accurate.” Sally smirked, with emphasis.
And thus, Fernando was born. The two of them headed to the event. Back then, the enclosure aspect wasn’t a thing yet. So they were still full sized people, and not around 1 inch scale.
However plans for the enclosure were already in the works, as some new staff members, called John and Jake, were full of Venning ideas.
Chapter 2 - A magician reveals his secrets
Cut forward a year to session 24, almost 12 sessions after Daisy joined as Fernando. She and Sally had since gone separate ways, Esmerelda had become queen of Elador at some point and Fernando became a staff appointed mage ritualist.
All the while Sally and Daisy, outside the game, had grown apart. Not for any reason in particular, just different lives and distance. They still chat from time to time though, and maintain a friendly rapport when they meet in and out of character.
Today was interesting for Fernando, as Esmerelda had entered his church with an armless foxgirl. She was cute, had green hair like fresh grass, earthy brown eyes, skin like caramel, tall fox ears twitching with curiosity, and a big fluffy tail swaying with trepidation.
Fernando thought she had a nice scent. Beast-kin had heightened senses, due to Venning. It helped make roleplay interesting, being able to eavesdrop, have open emotions, and pick up on scents. Everyone agreed it’s better for immersion too, so it became standard practice for Beast-kin Venners.
Esmerelda had introduced her as ‘Sara’. Obviously another limb ritual. Fernando would have to fetch a few things. He left for the other room, which had his bed, and a bunch of storage. While Esmerelda went off to fetch Gregorius the priest, who would judge the ritual to approve if it works or not - then make it happen, in his capacity as a staff member.
Searching through the storage, he found some rods which had wiring inside them. He grabbed some small lightbulbs that he had venned to be shrunk down, and shaped like coloured crystals. He also grabbed his trusty mage staff. It had a button that lit up the tip, brandishing a large crystalline lightbulb. Two AA batteries only.
He walked back in the room with his items, and began setting up his ritual, placing the rods in small holes, clicking them into place in a vaguely circular formation. He screwed the crystals on top of them, leaving them a little loose.
He took out some white chalk, and began drawing a magic circle on the floor, drawing intricate designs. Being an artist in real life certainly helped make it good. It even had latin writing as the magic script. He studied it outside the event just to do this, magic roleplay is as good a reason as any to learn an ancient and dead language.
He walked around the altar. It hid a small machine that burned fuel to heat water into steam. The steam turned a mechanism that made electricity. It was very simple, as complex things were not possible at 1 inch scales. The electricity would flow into a circuit under the circle, allowing him to tap the crystals into place properly to create the illusion of ‘magically activating’ them.
There was just one problem however. He noticed the steam engine was out of water. He had forgotten to refill it after cursing a cabbage merchant on Friday night. It left him frowning.
“Hmm, needs a refill...” He sighed, he’d need to go off and find a bucket, then find some Venned pipes with working water.
He had a bucket outside, but the water was another issue. Most buildings here were venned objects, using paper as the input and using two people to ‘trick the machine’ as they put it.
It’s why the buildings were made of real stone, wood, and straw. And using the ‘Exploded’ view in the machine, they could add things like plumbing, electricity, and LED lighting that looked like magic lanterns.
The buildings were detachable from the enclosure's base, and were put away in storage. They were Venned for 3 years, so they won't become paper for another 2 and a half years yet.
The problem was that he’d have to find someone who was at home in order to use their taps.
He’d use his own, but the staff had forgotten to add water to the tank under his church this session, and he had to wash up at Gregorius’ tavern before closing times. He wasn’t one for taverns, but it let him read a book he was writing.
That book would never be able to be big, Venn Machines did not handle writing for some reason, and it was written as a tiny book. It would be a few millimeters in size at his full scale.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
“Um excuse me, can I use your taps for some water?”
“Uh…sure, why?” they invited him in.
“Magic ritual, tavern is closed right now so I have to use someone else's.”
“Can’t you use your own?”
“Uh…the…gods, seem to have punished my church, to be without water.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah...”
He got his water and left, in retrospect there was an irony about Gods punishing their church. He immediately thought of the churches outside the game, sometimes it felt like God should punish them too - with how poorly they act in his name.
Fernando re-entered his church, Esmerelda had arrived with Gregorius already. After a curt nod to Gregorius, he walked behind the altar and poured the water in.
“Alright, I'm ready, would you like an audience for this?” he asked them.
“Nah, just make it good as usual.” Greg shrugged.
“Okay, in that case, Sara please sit in the center of the magic circle.” he said to her.
“She really is beautiful.” he thought to himself silently, his heart racing.
Sara stood up and walked to the middle of the circle. She sat on her knees inside the center circle.
“Like this?”
He squatted behind the altar for a moment, clicking the button to start the steam engine. A fog began rolling into the room from the base of the altar. He picked up his ornate looking black staff with the orange crystal lightbulb on the end of it.
He began chanting some unintelligible words, mostly random stuff. To be honest, he was always scared to do it in Latin, just in case magic was real. He started walking around Sara in the circle.
He did this in theatrical fashion for a good few minutes before holding out his stave to the smaller crystals.
He chanted, trapping the crystal of his staff over the other smaller crystals on sticks as he walked around the circle. This would push the lightbulbs into place enough for the electric current under the floor to connect, and make them light up. He repeated the phrase each time. Each crystal glowed faintly as he tapped it.
He sharply pointed the tip of his staff at Sara on the floor, aimed at her missing arm. He discretely tapped the button on his fancy staff, turning the light of the orange lightbulb on. The ‘crystal’ tip of his staff glowed brightly.
“Okay, time to wrap it up, I can hear the machine stopping.” He thought to himself.
He spoke firmly and with power. The fog began to fade, and he lifted both arms upwards, his flowing robe dispersing the fog around Sara in a flourish, his stave in one hand.
“Let this blessing of the gods rest upon this weary soul!” He prayed towards the ceiling in a firm and commanding voice.
“Damn, I'm cool.” he smiled inside.
He held the pose for a few moments. Then Gregorious and Esmerelda began to clap in applause.
“Ah, I do love a happy audience.” Fernando flourished a bow. He clicked the button on his staff to turn it off. The crystals on the sticks had also turned off since the machine had stopped, killing the electric current.
“So…I can have my arm back?” Sara asked nervously.
“Aye lass, come with me, the ‘Gods’ have approved ye.” Greg smiled and gestured for Sara to come with him.
Sara looked at Fernando with a smile. “Thanks, that was awesome.”
He felt himself starting to blush, she really was cute. He could feel a certain part of his ‘anatomically accurate’ self begin to rise, and bowed to hide it, and the blush. He couldn’t stop his cat tail from wiggling in excitement though.
“Damn...I hope I see her again.”
The rest of his time there went by quietly, he stopped by Gregs Tavern later and sat down at a booth, reading old diary entries made in his tiny book. He sipped on his wine and heard Sara and Essie bantering about someone called ‘Enna’, being very raunchy about it. He blushed and tried his best to focus on writing his new diary entry.
For some reason though, he couldn’t stop thinking about Sara and ended up drawing her in his book. He wished he could Venn the book to full size and keep it, but that would ruin the words and art, since the machine failed at those.
He’d just have to remember it for when he got home later Sunday night. By then he would be Daisy, a she, and would dream more dreams of Sara and Fernando.
Her social accounts were going to have some spicy new shipping art soon enough.
