A Trust Machines Story by grapehyacinth

Note: If you haven't met Trini yet, take a look at my story "Trust Machines: Strike Up the Band":

Here, you'll be introduced to the young clarinetist and her classmates.  The following story is a look into Trini's diary - before the fateful 'Venn band trip' in "Strike Up the Band", as well as its happy results...

TRINI's DIARY!!!!

September 9

Okay, I just started tenth grade today. I know I never remember to write in my diary, but I'm trying again this year. Even if it's not every day, I'll do my best.

September 10

I never thought I'd hate band, but I do now. I love the conductor, Mr. Jeffreys, but the rest of the kids are awful. Mrs. Jenson, the guidance counselor, said I had to be in the concert band because only 11th and 12th graders could be in the best group, the wind ensemble. Even if they'd let me be in the wind ensemble, I couldn't, because my honors classes conflict with when wind ensemble is scheduled. So I'm stuck with idiots. Even Mrs. Jenson is an idiot. I just heard that she had herself transformed into a couch in the Venn (Trust) Machine as a joke. I mean, why would anyone want to be a couch? They say she sat in the break room for one week in couch form. How gross is that? People SAT on her, and I heard she loved it. I'd say she's the ultimate Venn slut.

September 22

I got first chair, first clarinet. That means I'm the best clarinetist in the group. I don't care, because the group sucks.

October 15

My sister Jenny is obsessed with Venn machines. She does so much weird stuff. Last night, she had her boyfriend Chad turn her into a rabbit. Now she's off somewhere in the woods. My parents were so mad that they went over Chad's house to yell at him. But he's such a wuss that he had his friend turn him into a cardboard box so his and my parents couldn't talk to him. That shows about how smart he is. He turns into cardboard. Completely brain-dead.

I wonder how that feels. Being cardboard, square, and hollow? Freaky to think about.

November 8

Jenny still is not back. Chad says the Venn Machine was set for a month. My parents are scared that she's lying out in the woods, dead in rabbit form. They say that if she's dead as a rabbit, she'll be fine when she becomes human. The problem is, unless they find her to put her back in the Venn Machine, she won't change back until the month is up. So if she's dead, she gets to lie on the forest floor and decompose for a month? It's too horrible to even think about. I hope she's not dead. She's missing a lot of school, too. That's so not fair.

November 10

My parents are constantly looking for Jenny. Everyone is. I even went with them today, but no luck. Sometimes we see rabbits, but they always run away from us. So if Jenny is one of them, she's obviously not wanting to turn back anytime soon.

November 14

My sister had babies. Rabbit babies. I don't want to know who the father was. I just don't want to know anything about it. The Venn machines scare the crap out of me. Jenny used to make fun of me because I wouldn't try them, but look at her now. She's a rabbit mommy.

November 15

They made Jenny turn back into a bunny to take care of her kids. That is so awful, but she said (before she went back into the Venn Machine) that she loves being a mother. Her school is using this as a 'learning opportunity', also. They're allowing her the time off, but she has to write a fifteen-page paper about her experience as an animal when she comes back.

Well, at least her kids are cute.

November 23

We found out who the father is. And it sickens me, because it shouldn't be possible, but now with the Venn Machines... So Jenny has this friend Mary who practically LIVES in a Venn Machine like that girl Waverly who's in band with me. Anyway, Mary is really into gender changes. When she saw Chad change Jenny, she decided to be one too.  Except she had him turn her into a male bunny. Then she went off and found Jenny.

I am so grossed out that I don't ever want to look at either one of them. I wonder how they'll even speak to each other again. Jenny had said that when you're an animal, the animal senses can overwhelm you, and you do animal stuff. She didn't know the boy rabbit was Mary.  Still, even if it was just a real bunny...Jenny doing stuff with a real rabbit...Oh, God, it's so disgusting I can't even think about it.

May 12

Okay, I know I said I was going to keep up with this, but after all that's gone on with Jenny, well, I kind of forgot about diaries. Jenny's been back with us for a while, but she misses her babies. Sometimes she and Chad turn into bunnies and go search for them.

Anyway, I'm back to writing my diary because I'm freaked out. In band we're going to have a 'field trip' to the Venn Machines and we're all going to be transformed into the instrument we play. Then the Westmore Community College band is going to play our songs on us. How weird and freaky is that? Mr. Jeffreys thinks it'll help us learn our music. Well, a third-grader could play our music, but these other idiots can't. Whatever. My mom wants me to go. She says it'll be good for me and I would enjoy being transformed. She and my dad have “Venn dates” sometimes. I really don't want to know what they do on them. They often spend the night at the hotel after their 'dates'. I wonder what weird stuff they turn into. Just thinking of my parents doing that is just...well, icky.

May 13

Mom told me this morning that she likes to turn my dad into a horse. She makes him a beautiful black stallion and she rides him through the woods. Sometimes he turns her into a white mare and he rides her. Oh, my God. I'm so ashamed. I think I need new parents.

However...I gave in my permission slip for the "Venn Trip" today. If everyone else can do this, then I can too. Jenny's going to help me get used to transforming before I go on the trip. Oh, God, I am so scared.

May 14

Tomorrow is Friday, so we're going to try to Venn me then. Meanwhile, to help me, Jenny made a list of the things she likes to be. For some reason, she likes to be inanimate objects – like, I don't know, socks, or whatever. That's weird. I can understand being different animals more because you can move and do stuff, but like, socks... I don't know.

What freaked me out was the pen she was using to make her list. It was Chad.

So apparently there is a way to do a percentage on the machine. Like Chad was 80 percent pen and 20 percent human. He basically was a pen with a human face. He goes “Hey, Trini” to me and I screamed. Jenny ignored us both. She kept writing, so he goes “You like my ink, huh, Trini?”

I was like “when you change back, I think the list will disappear, because the ink is you.”

Chad was thinking really hard about this and he obviously didn't know how to answer. So then he yells out, “Oh, Jenny, grip my hard plastic body a little tighter, please!”

When Jenny muttered, “You do make a nice pen, Chad”, I walked out of the room. He is so disgusting. Even as a human-pen-hybrid-whatever.

Later, after Chad changed back and left, Jenny came into my room.  She told me Chad likes to be clothes for her. She's worn him to school and stuff. Uh, he's awful to begin with, and then I hear that own sister has him on her body all day...Ugh. She said he likes being panties. I wonder if Mom knows that. On that note, I wonder if Mom and Dad ever did that...Okay, no, I need to wipe THAT picture from my mind...

May 15-17

HOLY GOD!!! I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it's been a few days since I wrote here because I HAVEN'T BEEN HUMAN FOR THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, so I was so freaked out by the time Jenny and I got to the Venn Machine that I was practically crying. Just to calm me down, Jenny brought me in and showed me how it worked. She told me to turn her into anything I wanted, and then I could change her back. So I changed her into something she hates – a cream puff.

It was funny to hold her in my hand. I knew it was my sister, but I was holding a dessert. And she smelled so good, I almost wanted to eat her, but I could never do that...

“Why didn't you eat me?” Jenny yelled when I changed her back. I couldn't believe she wanted me to. She said that she's done that with Chad. She turned him into cookies, a donut, ice cream...He likes to turn her into a lollipop...Oh, God. I would never eat a person. No matter what they were. Even if they were the best chocolate ever made.

When I finally got the guts to go into the Venn Machine, Jenny made me pick an animal I wanted to be. I thought about the animals she put on her list, and the idea of being a panda kind of sounded nice.

It was a shock to be suddenly something else. I mean, being furry and cuddly was nice, but it was so weird to be bigger and to see differently, and to be four-legged. I was really freaked when I came out transformed, and Jenny had to help me learn to move on my new legs. It was just...wow. I can't describe it.

Jenny offered to put me in the machine to turn me back, but I kind of liked the panda form, so I shook my head no. She said it was getting late and we should go home. She didn't think Mom would like a panda in the house, but she had a better idea. She shrank me down into a stuffed panda and brought me home that way. THAT felt so awesome. I don't know why, but being a stuffed animal and having her poke and prod me was amazing. She left me on her bed next to her all night. I never slept better.

The next day I turned back and we went to the Venn Machine again. Jenny was supposed to babysit some kids later, so we turned me into a toy train and brought me home. The kids played with me, and I loved it. They tooted my horn, and...actually that sounds X-rated, but I really did have a little horn on my caboose that you could press.

I told Jenny I could see why she liked being objects. It was like Mr. Jeffreys had said – when you're the object, I guess you kind of think like the object. As a toy, I enjoyed being played with, and I wanted it. Just like I loved being cuddled as a stuffed animal.

So next, Jenny turned me into a cat scratching post. I think she secretly thought that was really funny.

She brought me home, telling me I'd like it when our cats scratched on me. When she put me down in front of Fluffy, first the poor cat kept smelling me and rubbing against me. I think she knew it was me. Eventually she started running her claws through my fabric surface. It didn't hurt, but I kept worrying that I'd get ripped apart, so it wasn't the best experience. Although Jenny did say that you can't get hurt from something messing you up when you're transformed.

On Sunday, I was a whole list of things. Jenny kept bringing me in and out of the machine. First I was a piece of paper. I wanted that because Jenny said it felt really cool being flat, and it was true. I felt like a very thin rectangle, and every touch of Jenny's fingers sent weird shivers through me. She folded me up into a paper airplane and tossed me into the sky. It actually felt really nice.

Then I was a comb, because Jenny lost hers, so I got to fix her stupid messed-up hair.

She made me a barrette then, because she said her hair was falling in her face. That was just...odd. I basically felt like I was a small, long metal thing bent completely in half in the middle. Luckily she found a bobby pin in her purse to use instead of me, so I got lucky.

Jenny said to try some more animals. First she made me a squirrel. How weird is it having a tail? It took me a while to get used to it. I liked being small and fuzzy, though.

Then I wanted to be a bird. Jenny made me a wild turkey. First I was mad, because I wasn't sure they fly, but they actually do. Just being all round and feathery like that made me start to giggle, only the sound came out as a ridiculous 'gobblegobblegobble'. This sent Jenny into hysterics. When I finally was able to launch myself into the air, it was awesome. I was flying, I mean, really FLYING. The problem was I was a pretty big bird and flapping was tiring me out, so I had to come down soon.

It was getting late, and Jenny decided she wanted to be a rock for the night. I was laughing because I thought she was joking, but she wasn't. She says it's “very restful” to sleep in that form. Restful, huh? I don't want to know how she figured that one out. So we Venned her into a big chunk of granite. I tried to haul her out of the Venn Machine, but was only able to bring her several yards away from it. I was thinking of bringing her back and making her smaller but my friend Elise came by, without her boyfriend for once. I asked her where he was, and she held up a smiling pendant that hung around her neck. Rob apparently likes to be jewelry. I swear, I think the Venn Machines have made the world insane. And now I'm part of it.

Anyway, Elise goes “You need a wheelbarrow to bring her home.” I thought that was funny too, but she meant it. So I ended up becoming a wheelbarrow, and Elise plopped my sister the rock on top of me and wheeled us home.

My Mom was not too thrilled.

May 18

We both turned back to ourselves in record time, although being in the form of a wheelbarrow was cool. I think both of us slept really well, too. Although my father grabbing my handles and wheeling us into my bedroom was a little awkward. He kept going “crazy kids. What will they change into next?” My Mom says we're lucky, because if we missed school because we weren't human, the Venn Machines will be off-limits to us for a long time.

May 26

Even though I was okay with transforming now, I was a little worried about the band trip.  But it turned out to be the BEST day of my life! They turned me into a clarinet, which felt great. And the college guy that played me was, and I never say stuff like this, HOT. He was GORGEOUS, and the nicest guy ever. He was so careful with me, and he kept saying things like, “You're so pretty like this,” and he was doing all this stuff on my keys to make me feel nice. Honestly, him just blowing through me, his lips on my mouthpiece...just amazing. I think he was purposely doing things with his tongue on my mouthpiece to make me feel good.

His name was Mark, and we exchanged phone numbers after. He's a freshman in college. Mom is going to kill me.

May 27

Mark called me! We're going to meet at the Venn Machine on Friday night. He wants me to play HIM!

May 29

So right here on the bed next to me is Mark. He is an awesome clarinet, and I've been teasing him with some great clarinet music. I played a really fast piece on him, which I'm sure he liked. Then I played the Mozart Clarinet Concerto because he told me he likes that. Then I tried to play the Debussy one, called “Premier Rhapsody”, but it's really hard and I messed it up a bit. Maybe I'll practice it on him later.

June 7

Since Mark is done with classes, we're seeing each other more often. He showed me how to do the percentage thing on the Venn Machines after I told him about Elise wearing Rob. I think stuff like pens with faces is really odd, but he said he'd love to be my necklace. So today I wore him to school. When I saw Elise before chemistry, I held Mark up to show her. She was really surprised when I told her about him. She was even more surprised when he winked at her! “Oh, that's just like Rob and I do!” she said. I told her that's why I did it. I didn't tell her that I still think it's creepy. Although for some reason, Mark is NOT creepy like this. I'm holding him right now in my hand, and he says that this is a really nice form to be in. He says it feels so good to bounce against my skin when I walk. He even kissed me. Yes, my little blue pendant kissed me with his cute little mouth. I love him.

June 11

We had the school concert tonight, and it went really well. I could tell even Mr. Jeffreys was happy, except for when, right before the concert, the tuba player said he lost his tuba. Mr. Jeffreys was so mad at him. He was like “How do you lose a tuba? It's like losing the Empire State Building!” And one of the saxophone players then volunteered to be a tuba. That got Mr. Jeffreys even madder, because then we would be missing a sax player.

Anyway, they had a party after for us and for the Westmore Community College band, and almost everyone was there. Normally I'd be too shy to go, but Mark promised to be there, and that was awesome. He told me and this girl Gaia about all the nasty stuff the college kids do at the Venn Machines. When I asked him what he wanted to do, he said he wanted to play a duet with me. I was really confused, until he explained. We'd both be clarinets, and his friends would play a duet with us. That sounds so romantic, I can't wait.

June 26

We celebrated my last day of school by being Venned into clarinets. Two of Mark's clarinet-playing friends volunteered to play us. They brought us to their dorm and played us late into the night.

And as my notes touched the air, they combined with Mark's. They made amazing harmonies, and some dissonances, which even then sounded beautiful to my ears (or whatever I had as a woodwind instrument). Our tones matched perfectly, and the music was so sweet. And I know that one day, Mark and I will make more than music. He is it for me. Clarinet or human, I love him.

And it's all thanks to those Venn Machines I used to be so scared of.
