She went to bed as a she, and he woke up as a he.
Sean found himself lying in bed in his briefs, once more a guy. Gently he removed Melanie’s arm from his chest, only to find Ava’s arm below it.
Ah! Ava still had her Lulu bob. That’s right, the girls had used the Venn machine last night after they’d been eating at the Mexican place. Lots of sangria had been drunk, too. Sean had guzzled as much water as she could when they’d got back, and now his hangover wasn’t that bad. It would be even better after he’d got some food in him.
Why had they drunk so much? The euphoria of their new relationship, he supposed. It wasn’t every day a couple became a triple. A triple? Is that what you called it?
Melanie lifted her head up. And promptly put it back down. “Ohhhh,” she groaned.
“Just a hangover, Mel. You’ll be better after breakfast.”
“Ugh! No food. Ever.”
“I like your sidecut.”
“Huh? Oh yeah. I forgot.” Melanie ran her hand through her Venned stubble. “Oh, that feels nice.”
Ava stirred. “Some of us are trying to sleep away their hangovers.”
“How about a walk? Fresh air always helps get rid of a hangover.”
“You know what also gets rid of a hangover? Chardonnay.”
“C’mon, guys! Breakfast at the diner? My treat.”
Ava looked over at Melanie. “Do you get to kill him, or do I?”
“I don’t know,” Melanie said thoughtfully. “We would be next to the Venn machines …”
“Oh, and Ava, it would be your turn to be an inanimate object …”
“An inanimate object? Would I have a head?”
“Not necessarily.”
“Fine. Let’s do it.”
*
“This,” said Anna, “was one of the best ideas ever.”
“I know,” said Bella.
Both girls were naked and examining themselves in a hand mirror.
“The VCHs are positioned just perfectly.”
“Just resting on my …”
“Me too.”
“I can hardly keep my hands off it.”
“Well, don’t let me stop you.”
“God, I think I’d like this permanently.”
“Wouldn’t it interfere with your yoga?”
“I don’t think so. But if it did … fuck yoga.”
“Oh, such a potty mouth. Do you kiss your mother with it?”
“No. But I do kiss my girlfriend.”
“Like … this?”
“Yeah. Let’s do that again.”
Hands crept back down.
*
“I do feel better after having breakfast.”
“Told you. Now how about this?”
“Hee! That even looks like Ava!”
“Let’s see if it sounds like Ava.”
Buzzzzzz …
“Not really, no.”
“Well, what if I put it … here?”
“Oh! That’s kind of what Ava does …”
“Here?”
“Hmm … well, I don’t know … keep doing it until I decide.”
*
Anna wasn’t really sure if she was a lesbian. Of course, given she was in a relationship with a woman, the question was kind of moot. Still, the question was there.
All the way through high school she’d been asexual, not really interested in boys or girls. At college she’d been more curious, but it wasn’t until she met Bella that she’d felt that attraction. Still, she saw plenty of guys who were interesting. Even Sean was cute when he wasn’t being a woman. Although to be honest, she preferred her men a little more imposing, a little less geeky. A man who looked a lot like … well, Bella.
There was a thought. Melanie had told her how she’d used the Venn machines to turn into a guy. Would Bella be into that? She loved her girlfriend just as she was, but the thought of her with a penis … just for a little while …
“Anna?”
She levitated on the bed. “What?”
Bella was staring at her. “You okay?”
“I’m fine. You just startled me, is all.”
“I just thought, are we still going to the Lounge tonight?”
“Oh yeah! Wouldn’t miss it!”
“We should probably start to get ready. It’s almost five.”
“Sure. Maybe … just half an hour more in bed?”
*
“You want the last sandwich?”
“No thanks. We should probably take Ava down to the Venn machines, turn her back so she can get ready for dinner and the Lounge.”
“Sure.”
Buzzzzz …
“Maybe … just half an hour more in bed?”
*
Anna always had very specific ideas of what she wanted to wear while dancing. Tonight was no exception. After dinner at the diner across from the mall, the troupe made their way to the Venn machines.
She smiled at her friends. She still couldn’t quite believe they’d given her this power over them, that they would line up, get in this weird booth that had come from God knows where, that had the ability to make them something else, and tell her to turn them into her clothes. But they did, and she was so thankful.
She’d promised Sean that he wouldn’t be her shoes tonight. She made him her dress, black, short, fringed and beaded. She held Sean up to Melanie, who with delight ran her hands over her boyfriend’s new form.
Melanie herself became her matching bra and panties, while Bella was changed into a glamorous choker. And Ava, well, she’d suggested her own transformation: a bottle of scent. Anna sniffed it; so this is what Ava smelled like, she thought, strong yet sensitive … yes, that sounded right.
And Ava had, on Anna’s instructions, changed Anna too. She’d wanted a jumble of images, like Kat’s, but what she’d ended up with was a series of jagged lines and strange alien shapes. After checking her left arm out, she decided she liked her new tattoos very much.
She trotted off to change in the mall’s bathrooms, and stash her stuff in the lockers there.
*
“Hi! You made it!”
Kat turned up at the Lounge shortly after ten, and when she spotted her friend Anna walked off the dance floor. Kat was wearing a pair of leather leggings and a long-sleeved purple T-shirt that, to Anna’s disappointment, hid her sleeve, revealing only the rosebud on the back of her hand. Her dead white hair was done up in a corkscrew.
They hugged in a friendly fashion, before heading to the bar area.
“You look really good,” Anna said.
“So do you. Wow, where did you get your dress?”
Anna giggled. “Venn machine.”
“Wait,” Kat said. “That dress is someone?”
“My friend’s boyfriend.”
“And what does your friend think of this?”
“Actually, she’s my underwear.”
Kat stared. “Anna, just how many people are you wearing tonight?”
“Four.”
“You’re wearing … four people? How the hell did you persuade them to get into one of those things?”
“Persuade them? I didn’t have to persuade them. They offered.”
“They … really? They just said, here, turn us into anything, we trust you?”
“Uh-huh.”
“And how did that make you feel?”
Anna frowned. “I’m not sure I know what you mean.”
The bartender turned her attention to Kat, who rapidly ordered two beers, before turning back to her friend.
“Let’s take this somewhere private.”
Anna, puzzled, followed her out to the balcony.
“Kat, is something wrong?”
“Wrong? It’s … no, it’s just … Anna, you’ve got to appreciate the power your friends are giving you.”
“I do. They know I won’t abuse it.”
“That’s not the point. The point is, they gave you that power in the first place.”
“You think that’s wrong?”
“No,” Kat said softly. “I think it’s … exciting.”
Anna simply stared at her.
“Anna, I’m a sub. I have a few couples I play with. I give them total power over me. I’ll do anything they want, and I love it. But not once have I said to those people, change my form. Make me anything you want, and I’ll just be in here, just … waiting.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s not how they think of it.”
“Yeah. How do you think of it?”
Anna opened her mouth, then realised she had nothing to say.
“We were talking last week, Anna, and you were telling me how you were a quiet mouse of a girl. Then you made friends with these people, and suddenly you were going to the club, showing off, getting a mohawk, getting a piercing. You changed, and I presume you changed after they asked you to turn them into clothes. You think that’s a coincidence?”
“I don’t know what you’re getting at.”
“I’m just saying, they gave you power over them. And I think you like it.”
And Anna realised she did.
“But I’ve never done anything they didn’t want me to.”
Kat shook her head and grinned. “I’m sure. But what, really, do you want? I think this is a side of you that you need to explore.”
“I wouldn’t know how.”
“Well, maybe we could try something together. Anna, I haven’t been one for Venning, but I think I would love to get into a Venn machine with you.”
“You want to join my wardrobe?”
“I don’t think there’s much more room in there. But Anna, I’m sure we could come up with some other … scenarios.”
“I have a girlfriend, you know.”
“You keep telling me this. But it’s not about sex. It’s about power.”
There was silence for a minute or two, before Kat abruptly drank the rest of her beer.
“Ah, forget it, Anna. I didn’t come here to analyse you. I came to dance. Want to hit the floor?”
“Sure.”
“That’s a nice scent you’ve got on. What is it?”
“Ava,” Anna said, and for some reason she just had to laugh.
*
“Anna seems very quiet,” Sean said to Melanie.
“Well, heck, she’s been dancing for hours. I’d be quiet too,” Melanie said. “Don’t forget, we just changed back half an hour ago.”
“Probably.” Sean lay back on the sofa. There was something digging into his back. He reached behind him and came out with a Catwoman action figure.
“Yours?” he asked Melanie. “I know it’s not mine.”
“Oh hey! I wondered where she’d gone! Hi, Selina. Harley and Pamela are probably missing you.”
And Sean got an idea. He’d suggested Anna make them mannequins to show off her clothes designs. But now he had something much better.
*
Anna sipped her wine. Bella was laughing with Ava over something Melanie had said or done. She started listening but quickly lost track of the conversation. She had a lot to think about, and not all of it was pleasant.
Kat was right. Her friends gave her a lot of power in their lives, Bella most of all, and she liked it.
She liked it.
A side of herself that she should explore, Kat had said.
Did she really want to do that? And how?
“I would love to get into a Venn machine with you … I’m sure we could come up with some other scenarios.”
Abruptly Anna stood up.
“Guys, it’s been a long night, and I think I might call it quits.”
Bella turned around. “Oh babe, it’s okay, we can leave. I should have realised you were tired.”
“No, it’s okay, Bella. Stay if you want. All I’m going to do is sleep anyway.”
“All right. I’ll be up soon.”
“Sure. Good night, folks!”
*
“Speaking of tired, I’m going to bed. It’s almost seven. And guys, I think I’m going to my own bed. I hope you don’t mind.”
“It’s fine, Ava. Any time you want to join us, just do so. Right, Mel?”
“Absolutely. And Ava … thank you.”
Ava smiled, then kissed Melanie and Sean in turn.
“I think we should probably hit the sack too, lover.”
“Yeah, get your strength up, fella.”
“Good God, woman, don’t you ever stop?”
“Never. And don’t forget it.”
*
Bella crept in, slipped off her clothes and joined Anna in bed.
Anna was awake a lot longer than Bella.
*
Sunday afternoon.
“Watcha doing?”
“Designing clothes.”
Anna lay sprawled on the sofa, drawing in her sketchbook. Bella peered over her shoulder.
“Nice. That’s for Ava?”
“Uh-huh.”
“You’re going to make us walk down the runway with ‘em?”
A giggle. “I don’t think anyone will be walking, no.”
A grin. “Oh, I get it. We’ll be mannequins.”
“Maybe!”
“Just inanimate objects, waiting for you to play with.”
“Hey, blame Sean. He suggested it.”
“Oh, that boy doesn’t know what he’s playing with.”
“Oh, you’d like being a mannequin?”
“Maybe. Being a dress is fun. Why not be the dummy wearing it too? But I’d feel sorry for my girlfriend. She wouldn’t have any dresses to wear.”
“Ooh, I don’t know. I could keep you back especially for me, I suppose.”
The girls had been moving closer to each other as they spoke, and now they gently kissed. As they pulled back, Anna touched her hair.
“Oh, damn. I forgot I wanted to get my undercut done. Well, I guess I can’t bother Ava with it. I could always do it myself … if I had a pair of clippers …”
“I suppose I could volunteer,” Bella said dreamily. She’d developed a real taste for being a machine.
“I accept your kind offer, dear. Shall we depart for the mall?”
*
When Anna slipped into her side of the Venn machine, she spent a while at the interface, longer than she usually took, trying to make a special change. That done, she pressed the green button that would transform her girlfriend.
Bella knew immediately she became a pair of clippers that there was something different. As usual, when she became something inanimate she didn’t see, or breathe, or feel. But this time …
“Can you hear me?” Anna said softly to the clippers as she picked them up from Bella’s side of the booth. “I hope you can. I tried to increase your hearing. It’s probably not a lot - I guess metallic objects can’t hear very well, or at all - but hopefully …
“Well, I’m going to take you back to our apartment now, Bella, my beautiful pile of wires and springs.”
*
“Look at you, Bella. Just look at you! What a lovely shape you are. You know, I’d never realised just how smooth and beautiful clippers are. And powerful, too.
“And so useful. I love my undercut. I love the way I can just brush my hair over and look completely normal, and then I can put my hair up and go be a freak at the club. Oh, but my hair grows so fast! Look at it! I just had it cut to stubble a couple of weeks ago, and now …
“Well, I guess that’s where you come in, Bella. You’re going to make me a freak again. A bad girl, I suppose people would say. Look at her, with the crazy haircut and the thing in her nose and the big butch girlfriend …
“Oh, you’re going to be so useful to me like this, Bella! I’m going to use you so well! Just think how we’ll talk about this when I change you back … or if I change you back.
“Now, how long did I transform you for? It was so cute, the way you got into the Venn machine, and didn’t even watch me pick a duration. I think it was for eight hours, but I don’t know … it could have been a day … or three days …
“Oh, I might have transformed you for a year. That would be bad of me, wouldn’t it? Or would it? After all, then I’d get to use you any time I wanted. I don’t suppose it would be possible that I’d forget you were really my girlfriend? Oh, of course not. I’d have to be pretty silly to just keep using you, plugging you in, turning you on, and not remember Bella … Well, I don’t know …
“Oh, did I mention I’m naked? I’m looking at myself in the mirror, and I’m holding you. Oh, my haircut is so messy! I’ve got you plugged in, beautiful. Just let me flick your switch. That’s what you want, isn’t it? The power. Let the electricity flow …
“Oh, just look down there. You’d think I was living in the 1970s. Well, you’ll take care of that, won’t you?”
The clippers roared to life.
*
The chosen duration had been eight hours, and when Bella changed back she and Anna fell straight into bed, finding each other’s mouths and breasts and hands, hungry for each other.
*
“What was that?”
“How much did you hear?”
“I … I really don’t know. But you using me felt like … like …”
“Did you like it?”
“I loved it.”
“So did I.”
*
Monday morning, and Sean almost skipped to the Venn machines. Ava could barely stifle a laugh at his enthusiasm.
“You really want to be a girl this morning, don’t you?”
“This morning, yep,” Sean grinned. “Take care of me, please. Do whatever you want, just make me female again.”
“Don’t worry, my friend. I’ve got a few ideas for you.”
*
She could barely wait to see herself again. She’d been he for the entire weekend, after all.
“Here,” said Ava, retrieving a mirror from her bag, which she’d stashed in the lockers provided near the Venn machines.
“Lovely!” Of the three women she trusted to change her to a woman, she felt Ava might “get” her the most. Her makeup was perfect - heavy on the eyeliner and with a slash of red lipstick - and she loved how Ava had designed her hair, in a rockabilly girl quiff, with a red bandana around it. She was dressed in a pair of red sneakers, black capri pants and a red blouse that tied up in front and left quite a bit of cleavage on view.
And what was that on her bicep? That strange shape?
Ava looked slightly embarrassed. “I was going for a rose tattoo, but you know what Venn machines are like … sorry.”
“Don’t apologise! I love it!” Sean flung her arms around her roommate. As usual Ava had made her just a little shorter than herself, so she had to look up into Ava’s face. Sean felt giddy. This was exactly who she was supposed to be today.
“Well, have a great day, dear girl,” Ava said, giving her an affectionate kiss on the cheek. How it contrasted with the slow French kiss she’d got from her girlfriend when she’d still been a he and was leaving the apartment. How perfect both kisses had been.
Two girlfriends? No. But two partners.
“See you this evening, babe,” Sean grinned. She picked up her backpack and headed to work.
*
She felt so damn happy. Even all the boring stuff that was part of her job was somehow interesting today. When she walked past the registers, she couldn’t help but sashay, prompting Evie to give her a mock wolf whistle. Sean laughed, but she was flattered, and ended up agreeing to try to Venn Evie into the same outfit one lunchtime.
Yes, it was a good day to be Sean.
Then came the phone call from the store’s manager, Imogen. “Sean, could you pop into my office at your convenience?”
*
Oh God, oh God. What had she done? Had someone complained that he was being a she way too often? Who would do that? God, she couldn’t be fired, could she? She had an apartment now, rent to pay. She ran over her actions of the past week. She couldn’t think of any obvious mistakes. She wasn’t the only Venner - Alicia, the store accountant, regularly came in as Alex on casual Fridays, and there was this person on the late shift who changed genders so often, Sean really didn’t know what their original equipment was …
Nervously, she tapped on the office door, to hear Imogen say “come on in”. Sean was met by a big smile, so obviously, she wasn’t in trouble. But then, what was it?
“Sit down, Sean. Wow, I like your hair.” Imogen cleared her throat. “So, I don’t know if you’ve heard this already, but Danny’s leaving.”
“Oh? No, I hadn’t.” Danny looked after popular fiction and was the bookstore’s assistant manager.
“Yeah, he’s working out his notice and he’s going to be gone in a fortnight. So, I’m going to promote Sienna to look after popfic.”
“Okay …” This had what to do with her?
“But that leaves the assistant manager job open, and I wondered if you’d like it.”
Sean wasn’t quite sure she’d heard right. “Me?”
“Yeah, you. You’ve been doing a great job, handling non-fiction and the graphic novels, and everyone loves you. I think you’d be perfect. It’s more responsibility, and you’ll be working five days instead of four, but on the plus side it’s regular hours - 10am to 6pm - and more pay. Not a lot more, but it all helps, right?”
“Absolutely!” Sean grinned. “Then yes. I say yes!”
“That’s great! I’ll send you a contract tomorrow, and tell the staff, if you want. Oh, you’ll have to ditch the T-shirts, but you can wear jeans.”
One question struck Sean. “Uh, can I still be a woman?”
Imogen had an amused look on her face. “Sean, you can be whatever gender you want. That’s your business.”
“I just thought … I feel like I’ve been doing better at my job as a girl …”
“I don’t think you’ve been doing better because you’re female some days,” Imogen said carefully. “I’d say if you feel that way, it’s because you’re happier when you can come to work as whatever gender you feel most comfortable in.”
“Sure.”
“Sean, do you wake up some mornings and feel more feminine than masculine? And other days more masculine than feminine?”
“That’s it exactly.”
“And thanks to the Venn machines, you can be whatever gender you feel. I’d say that’s what is making you happy.”
Well.
“So anyway, congratulations. I think you’ll do great.”
Well well well.
*
“Champagne!” grinned Sean as he burst into the living room waving a bottle. “Champagne for my real friends! Real pain for my … uh … I don’t have any sham friends, do I?”
“Hey!” Melanie said from the sofa. “You’re happy tonight!”
“Promotion! You are looking at the new assistant manager at the store. More hours! More money!”
“Woo-hoo!” Melanie flung her arms around Sean, pulling him down to the sofa. “Ava, get glasses!”
“Congratulations!” Ava said from the kitchen doorway. “But don’t pop that cork yet. Dinner’s ready in 10 minutes, then we’ll drink and you can tell us all about it.”
*
“So I won’t be starting until 10, so we can get together in the morning before you guys head to college when you go back, and more pay, and I love working there, and they don’t mind if I’m a girl and … I mean, this is great, right?”
Sean was beaming so much, Melanie thought his head might crack in half. “This is great, babe!” she said.
“It’s fabulous,” Ava said. “You’re gonna do so well.”
“I think we should reward him, don’t you, Ava?”
“Well, actually, Mel,” Ava said, sitting back in her chair and fiddling with her champagne flute, “I have something special in mind. I was going to wait, but what the hell, this seems like a good occasion.”
Melanie and Sean looked at her quizzically.
“So, let’s drink up, and then, I’m supposing you wouldn’t mind a little Venning, Sean?”
*
Ava was being very mysterious, which Melanie found extremely annoying. “So what is it you’ve got planned?”
“Patience, my sweet.”
“I think you’re confusing me with someone else. Like a patient someone else.”
“All will be revealed.” She indicated the Venn machine with a flourish. “Sean, give Melanie your wallet and keys while I put a quarter into this thing. Then get in.”
Sean took one seat in the Venn machine, while Ava took the other. Then, to Melanie’s frustration, the doors disappeared, blocking her view. Only for a minute, though. Because the door appeared, and Sean stumbled out.
“Sean? What did Ava do …” Melanie trailed off as Sean was followed by someone else. The female Sean.
Both Seans stood staring at each other, before they gingerly put their hands out to each other.
“You cloned him?” Melanie gasped.
Ava shook her head. “I made him his male and female forms. I was going for fraternal twins, but I think that’s going to take a lot more practice. Like multiple attempts.”
“This is so weird,” Sean-B said. “It’s like I’m in both bodies at the same time.”
“Well, basically you are. You’re in charge of both. Don’t worry, it’ll get easier with practice. Melanie, take Sean’s arm and help him home. I’ll help, uh, Sean.”
“It’s really hard to move.”
“There probably won’t be a lot of moving going on.”
“And hard to talk.”
“Pretty sure there won’t be much of that either.”
*
It took a couple of hours, and some very jerky motions - Sean kept trying to do the same thing with both bodies - but eventually the two Seans began to move independently. Just enough to satisfy Ava and Melanie - and the Seans.
“Just lie back and let us take care of things,” Melanie said, as she straddled Sean-B.
“Mmm, good advice,” said Ava as she leaned over Sean-G.
Simultaneous moans issued forth.
*
“Clever boy … and girl.”
“I guess I’m a fast learner,” said Sean-G.
“Oh wow.”
“Love you, honey,” said Sean-B.
“Love you too. Now I think it’s time for Ava and I to sit back and watch.”
“Watch?”
“Come on, Sean, you can’t tell me you’ve never thought about it,” Ava grinned.
Lying facing each other, the two Seans - one male, one female - smiled and moved together.
Their common mind had them kiss, and the rest, well, that came naturally.
