Marcia woke up the morning after the party, nestled in between two warm bodies, in her own bed. Under her own bedroom ceiling, at least, so it stood to reason. She always needed to orient herself a little after a good night’s sleep, and after a coven party, all the better to run down the checklist.
So, her own bed, and both of the warm bodies next to her were Reina’s. Apparently the three of them had decided not to go home with anyone else last night after all. Oh, well. Something to look forward to.
She felt a weight in her arms. She gave it a test squeeze. Felt like her head. She reached up to feel her neck. It stopped at a flat surface, but she saw her hand. So, she was using general awareness, and her head was still limp. Got it.
She held her hands up and wiggled them around. She only saw the usual two. That ruled that out. Then she lifted each foot, one after the other. Still just two, and both legs fully attached. Good.
Now that she was pretty much awake, she sat up for a proper look around. Both Reinas were still out cold, in matching lingerie, and each of them was curled up with one of her heads. A fourth head sat on the dresser, resting on its cheek on a spare pillow.
Right. She’d had a few ideas for her multi-head project last night, but Reina and Reina still had some energy from the party, so she’d put that off till the morning. Well, no time like the present. And since both of her legs were still attached, she wouldn’t have to wake anyone.
She extracted herself from her curvy cocoon and carried her two spare heads into the kitchen. She set them out on the table and got out a pencil and a few sheets of graph paper from her craft box, and she set the coffeepot to start brewing, for when a Reina woke up or she decided to reconnect her head.
She made some bullet points on the paper, just to get the juices flowing. She automatically reached up to tap her cheek with her finger, but tapping the top of her neck wasn’t the same. She moved one of her heads closer and drummed her fingers on the side of her face. Trying to think wouldn’t feel right otherwise.
Then she started sketching. Let’s see. A big tray around her waist? Too bulky. She crossed it out. A harness with straps to hold all the heads? It might flop around a lot. What if she added braces? Maybe, but it would be complicated to engineer.
She set one of her heads on the paper and traced an outline around it, just to get some measurements. The coffeepot started to bubble on the counter, so she didn’t quite hear the floor creak behind her until her vision filled with hands.
“Morning, Marcia,” said one of the Reinas, as the other one leaned over and kissed the top of her neck. “Still working on your project from last night?”
She gave a thumbs-up.
One of the Reinas looked at the graph paper. “Whoa. That looks complicated. Do you have the tools for all this?”
Thumbs-down.
They put their spare Marcia heads on the table next to the other two. “And are you keeping it to yesses and nos because you’re trying to concentrate and we should leave you alone, or just because you’re headless?”
Marcia set the pencil down and pulled a Reina close, and she held up two fingers.
One of the Reinas kissed Marcia on the top of her neck again, and the other one kissed her cleavage. “Good. “We’re gonna go get dressed and grab donuts. You want donuts?”
Thumbs-up.
The Reinas went back to the bedroom, while Marcia started reattaching and then deleting her extra heads until she was down to just one. She kept it detached, though, and she didn’t wake it up until she had a cup of coffee ready to go. Once the cup was full, she held her head right next to the cup so when she eased her consciousness into it, she only had to tilt the cup a little. Handling hot liquids first thing in the morning was hazardous enough without being in two pieces.
She felt more or less awake when Reina reemerged, wearing yoga pants and a bare-shouldered sweater. Just one body, but still two heads.
“Really?” said Marcia. “Just rubbing it in?” She held her coffee in one hand and her head in the other, holding it up to each Reina for a proper kiss.
“We just wanted to see if this would work,” said the left Reina. “We’re head-centered, remember, not heart-centered like you. It’s more like we’re sharing a body.”
“And you’re just gonna go get donuts like that?”
“Why not?” said the right Reina. “Let them stare.”
The Reinas left the apartment, while Marcia sat at the table, staring at her sketches as she savored her coffee. She’d just about finished her first cup when the Reinas came back with a box of donuts from the bodega downstairs. While they poured themselves a cup, Marcia cradled her head in one arm and fed herself a donut.
“So,” said one of the Reinas, while the other one drank coffee. “Iolana and Aya, huh?”
“Yeah. Iolana and Aya.” Marcia’s heart began to flutter a little. Iolana and Aya were the couple that Marcia and Reina had been getting to know at the party, since they’d be teaming up to do jobs for the coven. Iolana had spent most of the party with Marcia and Reina, while Aya had spent it with Marcia and Reina. “Our new partners in crime. Our couples date tomorrow night should be fun.”
“After what we got up to at the party? I bet it will,” said Reina.
“You know,” said Reina, “Aya said she was double-jointed.”
Marcia giggled.
