Marnie waited for her girlfriend Emma to show up for coffee. When she arrived, Marnie had to take a moment to take in the change. It was definitely a surprise.
"Marnie! Great to see you!"
"Yeah, you too, babe!" Marnie would have usually leaned in for a kiss, but as it was, she had to settle for kissing the back of Emma's hand. Emma giggled and squeezed Marnie's fingers, and then they sat down at their table.
"So, how've you been, Marnie?"
"Great, I've been great." Marnie tapped her fingers on the table for a second, looking for the best way to say it. "So, looks like you got some work done, huh?"
"Oh, right, I never told you. Yeah, I got it done a couple days ago. You like it?"
"Well, I guess it's lot to get used to. I mean, you don't have a head."
"Yeah, I was getting tired of those headaches I always got, plus my chapped lips and the dizziness. So I just had the whole thing removed."
"Wouldn't that cause problems?"
"Oh, no, the opposite, actually. I don't have to mess with my hair every morning. I don't have to brush my teeth anymore. I can get rid of my contacts. It's just super convenient."
The waiter showed up at the table, and Marnie and Emma ordered their coffee. The waiter kept his cool pretty well. He'd probably seen all sorts at his job.
"So how are you making do, you know, without your contacts?"
"They gave me a booster shot when I had it done. All I had to do was sit in the waiting room for about an hour afterward to let it kick in, and boom. Full 20/20."
The waiter brought their coffee, and Marnie picked up her cup for a sip. Emma just picked up her cup and held it for a bit.
"How's the coffee?" said Marnie.
"Good," said Emma. "Why?"
Marnie looked back down at Emma's cup, and it was about a third empty.
"Oh. You're right, that is pretty convenient."
"Super convenient."
They finished their coffee and got ready to go, but Marnie had one last thing to clear up.
"One thing, though. I'm not sure I could get used to kissing the back of your hand every time."
"Oh, yeah?" Emma put her hands on Marnie's hips.
"Yeah. Doesn't seem like I'd get quite so much out of it."
"Oh, you still can," said Emma. "It's just a little different, that's all."
Emma put her fingers on the back of Marnie's neck and gently rubbed. Turned out, she was right. It felt just as good.
Marnie bent her head forward and kissed the top of Emma's neck.
"Mmm," said Emma. "You ready to get going?"
"Your place?"
"Bed's already made, babe."
