"Okay, Celeste," said Bryn, sitting behind the game master's screen. "It's your turn. Make another death saving throw."
Marcia's headless body felt around her play area for her d20 and dropped it down the dice tower. Then she lifted her head out of her lap for a look.
"That's a 6 for your elven wizard Celeste," said Marcia. "Second failed save."
"You guys, someone get to Celeste with a heal," said Kevin, still grey and motionless from the neck down. "Olfwyr the cleric is still a statue until someone turns this trap off. Wiggins, do you have any potions left?"
"I used my last one to deal with an arrow after the orcs ambushed us," said Chris, playing Wiggins the dwarf rogue. "And I'm out of position. I can't get to Celeste in time anyway."
"I've still got one left," said Jen, playing Fiona the half-elf barbarian. "But I'm busy tanking this last orc to keep it from killing Celeste outright. I can't fight the orc and give her the potion in one turn."
"Back to the top of the initiative," said Bryn. "Fiona, what do you do?"
Jen took a look at the battle map and did some frustrated math. "Wiggins, do you have a shot on the orc?"
"Sure," said Chris. "I should still be hidden, so I still get sneak attack."
"Then I turn away from the orc and run over to Celeste."
"Probably a good move," said Bryn, reaching over to the map and moving the Fiona figure. "The orc gets an attack of opportunity on you."
"Obviously," said Jen, as Bryn rolled.
"Okay, the sword whiffs, but the off-hand is a definite hit," said Bryn. "You take ten more points of piercing damage from the orc's dagger." Bryn stepped over to Jen's seat with a prop dagger and inserted it bloodlessly into Jen's shoulder, joining the four prop arrows already studding her torso.
"Worth it," said Jen. "Day in the life of a tank. I run over to Celeste and feed her my last healing potion." She rolled her own dice. "Celeste, you get seven HP back." She reached beside her into Marcia's lap and put her head back on her shoulders.
"Thank goodness," said Marcia as everyone breathed relief.
"Anything for your bonus action, Fiona?" said Bryn.
"Nope, that's my turn."
"Then Olfwyr is next. Olfwyr, you're still petrified."
"Good to know, Bryn," said Kevin. "Could someone give me a chip?"
Bryn gently put a chip in Kevin's mouth. Chris bounced a few jelly beans off his face.
