It was late.
The rain outside drummed softly on the windows, turning the bedroom into a warm cocoon of blankets and breath. Luke lay flat on his back, iPad on his chest, the dim screen casting a bluish glow over both of them. Aniek rested on her side, head tucked into the crook of his arm, her hair splayed across the pillow.
He chuckled.
“What?” she murmured, eyelids fluttering.
He turned the screen toward her.
On it was a digital image — stylized, but clearly meant to be human-turned-Pokémon. A woman’s head — still smiling, blonde hair neatly styled — perched atop a small, plush Eevee body. All paws and fluff below the neck, with an oversized tail curled around her.
“I’d love to turn you into an Eevee from the neck down,” Luke said with a quiet grin.
Aniek blinked at the screen, then at him. “Seriously?”
He shrugged, half-playful. “I mean… look how adorable that is. You’d be so soft. I’d never stop holding you.”
She rolled her eyes and smirked. “It’s cute, yeah. But you’d have to brainwash me. There’s no way I’d ever go through with something like that. I'd freak out.”
Luke chuckled. “So… if you weren’t freaking out…”
“I might let you,” she said with a sleepy smile, already turning over. “But I’d have to not be thinking straight. You’d basically have to rewrite my brain. Silly boy.”
She yawned, tugged the blanket up to her chin, and added with a teasing lilt, “Nice try though.”
The Next Day
The air was damp after the storm, heavy with the scent of wet grass.
Aniek padded outside, curious. The low electrical hum from the shed hadn’t stopped all morning. Luke had promised tea. Instead, he’d vanished into his little project.
Again.
She crossed the yard barefoot, wrapped in a loose cardigan.
“Luke?” she called, pushing the door open. “What are you—?”
The inside of the shed shimmered with faint violet light. At its center stood a softly glowing platform — hexagonal, padded, humming with energy. The coils around it pulsed, casting faint ripples across the ceiling.
Luke stood beside the control panel.
He turned slowly as she stepped in.
“Luke, what is this—?”
Her foot hit the edge of the platform.
The moment she crossed the threshold, the machine activated.
Whum.
Sensors locked onto her immediately. The hum deepened.
Aniek froze. “Hey—wait, stop—!”
But Luke didn’t reach for the panel.
He didn’t hesitate.
He just watched.
A sudden warmth surged up from the platform, catching her mid-step. Her knees buckled. Her balance vanished.
She fell forward onto her hands — and her body began to change.
Her legs drew upward, compressing, the muscles twitching as her bones shifted. Her heels rose, her knees reshaping and tucking in. Her thighs slimmed and shortened while golden-brown fur erupted across her skin, soft and sleek.
She gasped. “Luke—!”
Her voice was high. Lighter.
Her arms followed — elbows tightening, wrists narrowing. Her fingers curled inward uncontrollably. Pads puffed up from her palms. Claws replaced nails. Fur rolled up her arms in waves, covering her limbs in plush brown.
She fell further forward as her shoulders compressed. Her torso shrank, back arching, hips narrowing. Her entire frame was getting smaller. The room seemed to grow. Luke loomed impossibly tall now, towering above her.
Her bones ached, reshaping into a perfect quadrupedal stance.
Then came the tail.
A rush of heat at her spine gave way to a sudden pop! — a massive, fluffy tail bloomed from her lower back, swaying involuntarily behind her.
A ring of cream-colored fur fluffed out from her neck, forming a soft, elegant ruff.
And then — her ears.
An odd pressure above her temples was followed by a sharp tingling, then a pop-pop as two large, brown-furred ears pushed up through her hair. Tall and soft, they twitched instinctively, like they’d always been there.
Aniek collapsed onto all fours, panting.
Where once had been a woman now stood something smaller, animal-shaped — soft furred paws, sleek body, large ears, a swaying tail. From the neck down, she was completely Eevee. Compact. Adorable. No more than two feet tall at the shoulder.
Her human head remained — wide-eyed, breathless.
She looked up.
Her eyes met his.
Her expression shifted in an instant — from shock to overwhelming joy.
“LUKE!!” she squeaked, her tail thudding behind her. “You’re here! You found me!”
She darted forward unsteadily on four soft paws and leaned hard into his leg, nuzzling her cheek against him with an eager hum.
Luke knelt slowly.
She looked so small now. Her plush, compact body barely came up to his knee.
He reached down.
She practically leapt into his arms.
He cradled her easily — one arm beneath her chest, the other supporting her lower body. She weighed so little now. Soft. Warm. Her tail drooped lazily over his forearm, twitching.
She nuzzled into his chest, tail flicking once, then curling softly around her side.
“Everything feels… right now,” she murmured, her voice dreamy.
Luke held her tighter.
She looked up at him, eyes bright. “I just wanna stay like this. With you.”
Then, with a quiet giggle, she licked his cheek and whispered, “Yours.”
And in his arms, she truly was.
