Chapter Seventeen: A Chance to DreamJake felt fresh surprise when he woke up. His entire body hurt, his head felt like a brass band was playing the 1812 overture in his noggin, but the fact he could even wake up astonished him.
How he had managed to survive lay beyond his reasoning, but he quietly blessed his luck. He wouldn't care to put it to such a test again, but he had survived.
As he became more and more aware, he risked opening his eyes, wondering if he'd gone blind. Nope, they worked just fine; he could see dust falling from a grey sky in fine particles. He stretched his wings slowly and carefully; jolts of pain shot through them, but they obeyed his commands. At last he regained his feet; his muscles shrieked in protest, but supported him.
Now upright again, he examined his surroundings. As he might have expected, most of the buildings surrounding him were completely flattened. Some stood upright however, surrounded by a white glowing shield of energy that extended upwards of almost three hundred feet, encompass
