As he drew closer, he could see badly frightened people, men and women, fighting the terrible jaws and webs of the spiders. Their strength proved futile, however, and most were already down and captured. A bare handful, maybe twelve or thirteen rangers and six campers, were holding their own against the most ardent efforts of their foes. Shotgun blasts mixed with the thunder of pistols and the occasional crack of a rifle. Spiders shrieked in agony as bullets cracked armor, turned eyes to jelly or punched holes in legs.
Before Jake could aid the warriors, Cassandra appeared from out of the forest, covering the distance quickly on her new legs.
Jake watched in interest as the bullets fired by the frightened humans ricochet off with sparks, indicating the toughness of her hide versus that of her children.

Chapter 11 Part I A Desperate CourseJake flew over the sea of green, gazing intently at the splotches of brown beneath the canopy. The search for Cassandra had taken two weeks already and everyone had been feeling the pressure.
Jake flew all-day patrols and had covered the entire national forest and a good deal of the state lands and farmland with his friend, the sparrow.
The fine fellow used his small size to dart down amongst the treetops, or flit to nearby windows to listen in to conversations, or twittered madly by the police station to eavesdrop on official reports.
Jake couldn’t speak to him fluently yet, but his sister could, She claimed he was extremely grateful to be rescued and wanted to help any way he could. Jake didn’t mind the companion, and had been trying to grasp all the subtle intricacies of sparrow-talk. However, his time to lessons was sadly minimal, and he’d made little headway, despite his natural gifts with languages blessed by his new body.
