Chapter 2Jake woke up feeling fairly fresh. He found that surprising, considering how late he had been out the night before looking for that stupid store. Another rock concert had filled the streets with throngs of students, gangers, and other people caught up in the chaotic madness. It had been after ten before he’d called it quits and gone home in disgust with the others.
His failure meant that he’d have to go to the police now. He wouldn’t bother security with this; he guessed that it would fall outside their jurisdiction. No point in bothering them then.
He walked out of his room after freshening up and found breakfast already made—it was Serena’s turn to cook. Helping himself to the bacon and eggs and toast, he poured himself a tall glass of orange juice. Stepping out onto the small balcony, he set his food on the tiny table and ate heartily. Chapter 4: It Wasn't a DreamJake grumbled a little as he felt himself climb back into consciousness. There was an annoying light in his eyes now that insisted he get up. Had someone turned on the bloody ceiling light? It was Sunday, for crying out loud! He could afford to sleep in!
At last he opened his eyes to flay whoever had decided to get him up so early and stopped. He realized he wasn’t in his room, but on a comfortable bed of soft grasses in a broad meadow. The light that had awakened him wasn’t a ceiling light, but rather the sun shining down in late morning.
Oh. It wasn’t a dream, he thought unhappily. He thought he should be panicking far more than he was, but for whatever reason he seemed able to take his changes in stride. He eyed the wingtip that came into view as he stretched thoughtfully. He wondered if his newfound acceptance was related to being a dragon, a side-effect of whatever magic had been used on him, or if he’d had it before the whole craziness had begun. He found
