You may have heard of Aimee Mullins or Oscar Pistorius. They were born with malformations of the lower legs that meant they would never be able to walk. However, by amputating the malformed parts of the legs, they could be fitted with prostheses that meant they could not only walk, but also run, well enough to compete on a par with able-bodied athletes.

Suppose that, while the lower legs were useless, but the feet were perfectly fine and could be saved, if a use could be found for them. Suppose further the person was born without hands. Why not then transplant the feet to become replacement hands? That is what has happened to the girl in this picture.
