Kat and Alyssa's hotel room had mostly opaque walls, but if not for the need for privacy, it most certainly would not. Transparency, in the literal sense, seemed to be a rule all Facetian architects adhered to whenever possible, which was why every room had a less-private section in the back where everything was completely see-through, walls, floor, and ceiling. The area was a decent size, taking up about a third of the room's total area, and contained a table and some chairs. Guarding the entrance to this area was a heavy one-way-mirrored sliding door taking up the entire threshold, that guests could close when they needed additional privacy. Impeding movement was not a concern when closing the door, of course; anyone could easily phase right through it via imprinting.
Naturally, the view from this part of the room was very interesting. Besides looking outside at the unique Facet city view, one could also look up, down, and out the side windows to see into the non-private side of other people's rooms, and if you look far enough, other sections of Facet above, below, and to the sides.
"...Now look at me!" Kat, in her energy form, had taken the shape of a spider, specifically the size of a tarantula.
"EEEEK!" Alyssa shrieked and instinctively teleported to the other side of the room, the glass part. "Ooh, that's a new one...seriously Kat you mind becoming something else?" Alyssa walked back into the main part of the room, looked around, and pressed the button to close the door.
With a pop, Kat turned into a butterfly and landed on Alyssa's shoulder. "Sorry Lyss, this better?"
Alyssa nodded.
This had been all Kat was doing for the last few minutes, enjoying one of the many perks of being made of energy. Namely that she could take any shape or size she imagined. To someone from Kat's dimension, where experiencing "bodies" of all different shapes was a normal part of life, it wasn't too much in the way of new experience, but it was still quite fun to play with.
"Whoops, I melted!" joked Kat, as if she hadn't just done so on purpose. "Look, I'm flooding the room!" Kat grew in volume from the tiny puddle she was before until she filled the room to a level just above the top of the bed. "Wanna go for a swim inside me?"
"Whoa, whoa!" Alyssa waded back over to the bed, stood on top of it, and examined her clothes, which to her surprise weren't at all wet. "You're fun, Kat."
"You know what else is fun?" Kat's head popped out of the surface of her liquid energy, followed by the rest of her body, and an energy surfboard appeared underneath her feet. "Surfing!" Waves formed in the water, which Kat rode like a pro. Suddenly, all the liquid and the surfboard vanished, and Kat was sitting on the bed next to Alyssa. "Actually I've never been surfing before."
"What should I try next, Kat?" asked Alyssa. "I've gotten pretty good at changing the colors of things but that's not the most useful thing in the world...did you see I teleported before?"
"Of course," said Kat.
"Let me try that again; that would be nice to have." Alyssa closed her eyes and imagined herself in a chair right next to the glass door. She tried to replicate the feeling she had when she did it the first time.
To her surprise, while Alyssa did in fact appear sitting there, Alyssa still found herself sitting on the bed. There were two Alyssas in the room! "Ha, I copied myself again...wait, I forgot, there's still that other me from before! I should check on her..."
"That's me," said the other Alyssa. "How did I get here?"
"Oh! Hahaha," Alyssa laughed, then looked disappointed. "Aww, you missed out, didn't you?"
"No I didn't. Watch!" Alyssa 2 hopped out of her chair and ran over to the bed. She gave the bed frame a little tap with her foot, and instantly it changed from crystal-clear glass to sky blue porcelain. "Remember what Kat showed me...you...before? I've been relaxing inside my head like she told...us, I guess, about. It really is just like imprinting; just go inside your head. It's so nice in there."
"But you saw everything?" asked Alyssa 1.
"That's pretty normal," Kat chimed in. "You're linked to her; you can do it too. Just see what they see. Neat that you got the new powers too."
Kat's phone rang.
"You have your phone?" asked Alyssa 1.
"Mm-hmm, I decided to take it in this body." Kat reached inside her hip and pulled her cell phone out from the abyss of her energy body. "Literally," she winked, before answering her phone. "Hello?"
"Here, just so things don't get confusing, I'll be...I'll be your hair," Alyssa 2 laughed, before jumping inside. Her hair shimmered blue and white briefly, but then returned to its normal blonde color, with the exception of a small light blue streak in her bangs.
"What does that mean, does that mean she'll be okay?" asked Kat on the phone. "Wait, are you sure you're the same nurse I spoke to? I spoke to Alexandra I believe..."
Alyssa lay down on the bed and stared at the ceiling, experimenting some more with the new abilities her mind possessed. With much concentration, after turning the ceiling blue, she was able to create a rough image of clouds, and even make them move a bit. She smiled, proud of her accomplishment.
"Yeah, and this is the same phone number...weird. That's A-L-E-S-S-A-N-D-R-A?"
Alyssa focused on the TV, wondering if she could use her mind as a remote. Unsure if she had the right technique, she nevertheless focused as hard as she could.
"Sandra, got i—WHOA!!!" Kat jumped at the sudden loud "pop" sound, her energy losing its cohesion for a brief moment from the shock. which she soon saw was the TV screen exploding in a shower of sparks. One of the sparks made it to the edge of the bedspread and ignited a small fire, which Kat, thinking quickly, extinguished by covering it with a dome of energy.
"The TV in my hotel room just exploded!" she said in disbelief.
"Sorry," Alyssa apologized.
That was you? said Kat telepathically. That's...wow. Be careful!
"No, it's fine, I'll talk to them," said Kat. "Stuff breaks sometimes; everyone knows that. But how's Stacy?"
Alyssa continued with what she knew she could do no problem: making pretty patterns on the ceiling with her mind.
"Okay...oh really?" said Kat. "I hope so too...Please do; thank you. Bye." Kat hung up.
"Do you remember what that nurse said her name was?" asked Kat.
"Wasn't it Alexandra?" said Alyssa.
"Yeah, with an X, right?" Kat agreed.
"Didn't she say she also goes by Xandra?" came Alyssa's voice from somewhere inside her hair, prompting her to giggle.
"Yeah, she did," she smiled.
"Now she said it's Alessandra, but she never goes by that and just goes by Sandra," she said in disbelief. "Weird." She opened the contact list on her phone and looked for Alexandra's contact to edit.
"Wait, Sandra...didn't we meet a nurse named Sandra in my world? Funny coincidence."
"Yeah..." Kat trailed off. "Wait, what??"
"It's nothing; I'm sure it's just a coincidence," Alyssa laughed.
"No, not that; now she's listed as Sandra in my phone! I definitely entered Alexandra!"
"Okay, that's strange...maybe I did it by accident when you told me?" Alyssa laughed.
"That always will be the best explanation when something weird happens," Kat agreed half-jokingly with a smile.
"So what did they say about Anistasia?"
"All they said was she started having some interesting brain activity a minute ago, like she was about to wake up, but then it stopped while they were talking to me."
"She's still...alive though, right?" asked Alyssa, worried for her extradimensional counterpart.
"Yeah, at least that." Kat said. "I hope she gets better," she sighed, shedding a tear of liquid energy.
"Let me try something," said Alyssa, sitting up in bed. She looked around. "Kat, mind getting me one of those cups? You can do it without getting up, right?"
"Mhm." Kat stretched out her starry void arm toward the courtesy cups on the table across from the bed, growing her hand to a comical size in the process. She tried to pick one up with her index finger and her thumb, but accidentally crushed it between her giant fingers after removing it from the stack.. "Oops!" she giggled, and retracted her energy arm back to nothing. "I'll just do it the easy way," she said, merely pointing a normal-sized finger at the cups. A starry glow formed around another one of the cups, and it floated over to Alyssa.
"Nice," she said. "That stuff really comes in handy!"
"Not as much as your abilities will once you master them, I'm sure," Kat smiled.
"Okay, so let me see." Placing the cup on the bed in front of her, Alyssa closed her eyes and tried to feel the cup in her mind. Before long, with enough focus, she was able to perceive the cup even better than she could using her normal senses, with a perfect grasp of the tiniest detail. "Ooh!" she said excitedly, but at the same time she lost concentration. "Aww." She opened her eyes.
"What is it?" asked Kat.
"I felt the cup in my mind," Alyssa said with a proud smile. "Let me try again."
Alyssa closed her eyes and focused some more, and was able to get her mental impression of the cup back very easily. "Hmm," she said. Alyssa picked up the mental image with an imaginary hand.
"Wow, cool!" said Kat.
Alyssa opened her eyes to see the cup falling onto the bed from a couple feet above. "Was it floating?"
"Mhm!" Kat nodded eagerly. "It looked like you were holding it with an invisible hand or something."
"Yeah!" Alyssa smiled, before closing her eyes again. "This is fun."
Alyssa mentally cut her image of the cup in half, almost as if with scissors, then opened her eyes to see two half-cups sitting on the bed. She giggled in elation at what she could do. Sure, it was nothing compared to the amazing power she had earlier that day, but in a way it felt more like she did it herself now.
"I'm gonna try something else." Once again, Alyssa closed her eyes, and brought both halves of the cup into the worktable of her mind. This time, she levitated both halves and held them next to each other, but next to each other so they formed a figure-8 shape together. As she was doing so, she found that she could actually move them through each other, so she held them in a way where they overlapped like a Venn diagram.
Curious to see what this looked like in the real world, Alyssa opened her eyes. The two halves of the cup were now a single piece again, overlapping in just the way she put them in her mind. "I think I'm getting the hang of this!" she beamed.
"Try and put it back together as a cup," suggested Kat.
"Okay!" said Alyssa, before closing her eyes once more. In her mind, Alyssa was able to separate the two parts of the cup again easily.
Now let's see, Alyssa thought to herself as she held the two halves in her mind and thought about how they went together. Ah. Alyssa moved the two parts back into place and opened her eyes.
Kat picked up the now-whole cup and inspected it, feeling the side. "There's a little seam, like you weren't exact, but still! You're amazing!"
"Can I see that again?" asked Alyssa. "I've got an idea."
Kat placed the cup in Alyssa's lap, and again, Alyssa closed her eyes. This time, with the cup in her mind, she focused hard on the image, and tried to recreate it next to the original. Alyssa opened her eyes, and two cups sat on her lap.
"Look Kat!" Alyssa said proudly, holding one in each hand. "I made another one!"
"Cool, we'll be rich!" joked Kat.
The second cup crumbled to dust in Alyssa's hand, and a crack even formed in the first one. "Maybe not," she said. "I'll need to practice that more."
Smiling, Kat closed her own eyes, pretended to concentrate real hard, and then made a third cup appear, only this one was purplish-black and looked like a starry void. "How'd I do?"
Alyssa giggled and gave Kat a kiss on the cheek. Kat's cheeks glowed faintly as if she was blushing. "Aww..."
"Let's get some sleep," Kat suggested.
"Okay," Alyssa agreed. She closed her eyes, this time focusing on the light switch, and flicked it off in her mind. The instant she did, the darkness behind her closed eyelids got darker as the light in the room faded away.
"Wow," said Alyssa, looking through the window, at the twinkling city lights that refracted through the crystalline structure of Facet. "Amazing view."
Alyssa got under the blankets and wrapped her arm around Kat. "You're really warm," she said.
"My glow won't keep you awake, will it?" asked Kat.
"Not at all. It's cozy!"
Kat smiled and let her energy spread out around Alyssa with a softer, goo-like consistency, before snugly enveloping Alyssa inside herself up to her shoulders.
"Mmm..." Alyssa cooed as she relaxed inside Kat. "You're a great blanket."
"Sweet dreams," said Kat. "They might become real," she smiled.
"I bet Tara and Rachel are loving it here," Alyssa said quietly as she fell asleep.
The room across the hall looked like it was about ready for a visit from housekeeping, if only because of the pile of sand in the middle of the glass floor. With Facet being an oceanside city, sand in a hotel room wasn't a particularly unusual sight, but a human-sized pile of it?
Even more unusual was the life-sized hollow glass statue of Rachel standing in the center of the pile, moving like a living person instead of remaining still like a normal statue. And she was full of water.
"Ready?" asked the statue.
A near-identical face appeared made out of the sand. "Do it!" said the sand.
"One...two...three!" At the count of three, the statue shattered into pieces, spilling the water on the floor and wetting the pile of sand. The shards of glass all liquified shortly after, becoming more water.
"Whoa, that's a cool feeling!" said the face in the sand, forming cracks like wet sand often does as it moved. "I'm soaked in you, Rachel!"
"And I feel you all around me, Tara!" Rachel laughed.
After enjoying the feeling, and the view, for a good five minutes, the water was leeched out of the sand by an unseen force and rose into the shape of Rachel, who then turned human again.
Tara did the same. "Told you you'd like being water." She walked through the privacy door and sat down on the bed.
"Yeah, I know!" Rachel said excitedly. "What else can we sparklify?" She walked into the main part of the room with Tara and looked around, holding out her index finger in anticipation.
"Try this," said Tara, taking the cheap hotel-provided pen from the nightstand and holding it so Rachel could see. Without hesitation, Rachel pointed her finger, and just like that the pen was inside her.
"Now you'll never need to look for a pen ever again," Tara smiled, turning her own finger into a copy of the pen she got from Stacy's house and waving it to Rachel.
Tara morphed her finger back to normal. "Or, you can do this..." Out of nowhere, Tara's finger became soaked with ink. She touched it to the wall and moved it around to draw a circle.
"Don't forget to clean that up," Rachel laughed.
Tara glanced over at Rachel with a smirk, waved her hand over the ink, and pulled it all into herself without a trace remaining on the wall.
"I just thought of a fun game!" said Rachel excitedly. Rachel transformed into a white sheet of paper. "Draw something on me," her face said, "and I'll see if I can feel what it is!" Rachel giggled.
"Well I'm not much of an artist," admitted Tara. "But it could be fun." Tara morphed her index finger into a pen. "I'll start with something simple," she said as she drew a heart on Rachel.
"Oh! I know! It's..." Rachel concentrated. and her paper surface turned bright red inside the lines Tara drew. "A heart!"
"Very good!" Tara smiled. In response, the paper absorbed the ink into itself and turned plain white again.
"Hey, that was my art!" joked Tara.
Tara began drawing on Rachel again. She drew an old-fashioned TV set with "rabbit ears", and it didn't look half bad.
Rachel focused some more, a faux wood pattern appeared on the sides of the TV, and the screen turned black. Tara smiled and touched one of the dials with her finger, but Rachel didn't respond.
"Can you turn it on?" asked Tara.
"No," said Rachel. "It's not plugged in," she giggled.
Rolling her eyes, Tara drew an outlet and a cord connecting the TV to the outlet, and the TV went on, even glowing slightly. It showed a recent memory of theirs that was one of their most exciting ones: when they (as a single person) first saw Kat and Alyssa jump out of the TV at the department store.
"Neat!" Tara smiled. "Hey, let me try something."
"A drawing?" asked Rachel.
"No," said Tara.
Rachel turned back into a human being and sat down on the bed, playfully kicking her feet in front of her.
Tara focused, trying to push the pen outside of her finger. She knew Rachel had already tried, unsuccessfully, to "un-sparklify" something before, but figured she might as well try herself. As it turned out, much to Tara's satisfaction, it happened with very little effort! The strange thing was that she didn't feel any different after pushing it out. Normally, every time she sparklified something, she felt more capable; she could feel its properties inside her waiting for her to call upon them. But when the pen left her finger, she didn't feel any of that go away. It was as if the pen was still part of her. Was it?
...Yes, it was. With no more difficulty than before, Tara could still easily turn her finger (or her entire body) into a pen, as well as exude ink from her skin, or become plastic. And she was even able to create another pen. And another. And another, which excited her to no end. "Rachel, look!"
At this point Tara was merely tossing her hand and pointing all throughout the room, and before long the room was filled with a very disproportionate amount of writing implements. Bearing the logo of a competing hotel chain, no less.
"That's amazing, Tara!" Rachel ran up and gave Tara a hug. "How are you doing that?"
"Hmm...it's kind of like when I turn into something, except I'm doing it outside of myself, if that makes any sense," Tara explained. "Try it."
Rachel tried, but found herself still unable to duplicate Tara's trick. "I can't do it..."
"Aww, sorry Rach," said Tara sympathetically. "Maybe there's something special you can do that I can't."
"It's still fun watching you do it."
Tara smiled and pointed at Rachel's shirt, squirting her with ink.
"Hey!" Rachel laughed, absorbing the ink inside of herself. Rachel turned herself into a human-sized blob of ink, and covered Tara's dress. Instinctively Tara tried to absorb the ink, but found herself unable to.
"Hey, what the, why can't I..."
"Tara, it's me," said Rachel's face on the blob of ink.
"Oh...oh my god, I would have accidentally sparklified you if I could," she said. "Guess it doesn't work on people."
"I hope that's not my special skill, sparklifying people," said Rachel. "I wouldn't want to do that."
"Yeah," Tara agreed.
"Unless I could somehow copy them without actually absorbing them or something," said Rachel, putting her hand down on the blanket on the bed. "Whoa, what the..."
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just...wait, did I actually do that?" Rachel laughed, closed her eyes, and turned into a blanket, falling on the bed on top of the identical one that was already there. "Yep!" said the blanket.
Rachel turned back to human. "Can you do that?"
"Sparklify things without absorbing them?" asked Tara.
Rachel excitedly nodded.
Tara pointed at the TV in the room and tried to copy its properties without absorbing it...but instead, the TV went inside Tara's finger like a spaceship being sucked into a black hole. Only with more sparkles, of course. "Haha, whoops," said Tara. "Guess not."
"Cool!" Rachel smiled. "...Actually no, I guess it would be better if we could both do it," she corrected herself, embarrassed. "What are we gonna do about the TV?" asked Rachel.
"This." Tara snapped her fingers, sending sparkles from her hand to the space on the wall where the TV once hung. The TV appeared on the wall...then immediately fell to the floor due to not being securely mounted, or even mounted at all. The screen cracked open as it hit the floor.
"No prob, you'll just make another one, right?" asked Rachel.
"I'm not sure, I..." Tara held out her hand, but nothing happened. "Yeah, it took a lot to re-make something that complex, so I guess my powers just had to dump out the original." Tara frowned.
"We could tell them it just fell off the wall," suggested Rachel. smiling deviously.
"Ha, maybe," said Tara. "Let's sleep on it."
Rachel turned back into a blanket and covered the broken TV on the floor like it was a bed. "Okay Tara, I'll be your blanket!"
Tara snorted at Rachel's silly joke. "You know what I meant...but please do!" Tara lay down in bed.
Smiling, Rachel jumped up, still as a blanket, and wrapped herself tightly and warmly around Tara.
"Sweet dreams," said Tara's blanket.
