Alyssa and Kat walked into the house together, Alyssa carrying both bags in one hand. She unlocked the door and walked in, putting the bags down on the couch as she sat next to them.
"You wanna make the video now?" asked Alyssa.
"Umm...sure, I guess," said Kat, who had just walked in.
Alyssa reached into the bag that contained the camera and tripod, and took out the boxes. The camera box was taped shut, and Alyssa was having trouble getting the tape off.
Kat sat down next to her. "Need some help?" she asked, as she held up her index finger and made its nail grow long and sharp. As Alyssa moved the box so it was within her reach, Kat very easily cut the tape with her newly sharpened nail, and opened the box. Her fingernail turned back to its normal shape.
"Wow, that's got to be pretty useful," said Alyssa. "Hey, you mind unpacking the tripod and figuring out how it works while I try to get the camera working?"
Kat nodded and took the tripod box as she got up. She walked across the room and sat down on the floor. As she did, Alyssa turned on the camera, and was pleased to see it came with a full charge.
"Hey Lyss, how much video can that thing store?" asked Kat.
"Oh, I don't know!" said Alyssa. That was a good point; the camera didn't come with a memory card and she hadn't thought to buy one. She pushed the record button. The camera beeped and a "record" icon appeared on the screen. She looked for something showing how much time was left, but all she saw was the timer that showed how long it's been recording. She pushed the button again to stop it. Alyssa started to look for the manual, not wanting to risk starting their video without enough memory to finish it. Then she thought of something.
Closing her eyes, Alyssa willed herself into the camera she was holding, imprinting herself onto it. As the camera was no longer being held, Alyssa felt herself land on the couch, and roll off onto the carpet with a soft thud. "Ouch," Alyssa thought, even though she didn't actually feel any pain. Luckily, Alyssa could tell from inside the camera that it hadn't been damaged.
Hearing the thud, Kat looked up from what she was doing, and was surprised to not see Alyssa. "Hey, what was...where'd you go?"
"I'm in here," came Alyssa's voice from the camera sitting on the floor. Kat looked under the table to see the camera had turned blue. The strap it had for holding it had become white and fluffy, like a cloud.
"What are you doing in the camera?" Kat laughed as she stood up. "Just curious what it was like?" She walked over to Alyssa and picked her up.
"No," she replied. "I couldn't figure out how much time was left, but I figured I'd know if I was the camera." At this point Alyssa noticed her vision looked weird. She had no depth perception, and she couldn't perceive as many details. But, strangely, this felt normal. She also had a very clear, photographic memory of a brief moment a minute ago, staring at the floor in front of the couch. Obviously the test video she had recorded. With a thought, she deleted the video, instantly forgetting it. Well, she remembered it with her human memory, but she no longer had the level of detail that only the camera's memory could store.
"How much space is there?" asked Kat.
"Just over an hour," said Alyssa. "Should be plenty." Alyssa paused for a second. "So how are you doing with the tripod?"
"Wasn't hard to figure out," said Kat, as she pointed Alyssa at the tripod, standing on the floor. "See?"
"Nice, thanks!"
As Kat held the camera, she felt it shake a little as Alyssa exited the camera, sitting on the floor. She didn't really land on the floor so much as she rematerialized there, her body stretching and growing out of a small point on the camera. Alyssa thought it was neat how there were different ways she could enter or exit an object.
"So I guess we're ready to start?" suggested Kat.
"Guess so," said Alyssa, smiling. She stood up and sat down on the couch.
Kat placed the camera on the tripod, pointed it at the couch where Alyssa was sitting, and pressed record, before sitting down herself. She looked at Alyssa and nodded slightly.
"Hey, I'm Alyssa."
"I'm Kat."
"Now you probably won't believe this, but my friend here is from another dimension," said Alyssa, placing her hand on Kat's shoulder. "Somehow she ended up here. But anyway, she showed me something really cool. Like REALLY cool."
"I still think it's funny you find it that incredible," said Kat.
"Yeah, well, where she's from it's normal," said Alyssa. "But here, it's unlike anything anyone's ever seen before. Seriously, this will change the world. It's that big," she said, as she realized just how big of a deal this video would be for everyone. She smiled as she thought of how funny it was that something this important, this world-changing, would be revealed to everyone in the form of an amateur video casually recorded by two girls at home and posted on the Internet. "Like, really, this will blow your mind!" she said, laughing at the contrast between the importance this video would have and how important they were making it seem. She looked at Kat. "Here, tell everyone about it."
Kat explained much as she had to the woman at the store. "So yeah, where I'm from this is called 'imprinting,' and it's a really useful way to do...pretty much anything, really. So people here, when they want to use something like, say, a computer..." she began. She looked next to her at Alyssa. "Hey Lyss, can you go get your laptop?"
Alyssa nodded and stood up.
"So anyway, you operate the computer from the outside, right? Like you push the buttons on the keyboard and tell it what to do?"
Alyssa sat back down with her laptop.
Kat continued. "With imprinting, you can actually become the computer. And you don't need to tell it what to do, you don't need to know how to use it—you are the computer, so whatever you want it to do, you just do it yourself."
"—You're probably pretty confused right now," Alyssa interjected. "Again, you've never seen anything at all like this before, so you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. How about we just show you? You go first, Kat."
"Wait, what do you want me to do exactly?"
"Umm..." Alyssa realized they probably should have planned out their video before they started making it. But despite that, she kind of liked the way it was turning out; it seemed more personal in a way. Plus it added to that whole aforementioned casual quality, which she liked. "Well how about you just start by imprinting on the laptop, that's pretty amazing by itself." She turned to the camera. "Oh and I swear we aren't using any kind of special effects or anything, this is all unedited. Not that you'll believe me, but...well, just keep trying to do it yourself until you get it, we'll explain how. Seriously, keep trying it, you'll be glad you did. I got it in only a couple days, and I wasn't even trying that hard." She smiled, turning back to Kat. "Go ahead."
Kat nodded and placed her hand on the laptop, as Alyssa stood up and reached across the table with one knee on it, making sure the camera was pointing in the right direction. It was, but she still adjusted it a bit to get a better angle before sitting back down. "Here I go!" said Kat, as her body was sucked into the laptop, which rippled and changed just as it had the first time she imprinted on it.
"So what should I do?" asked Kat, her voice coming from the speakers.
"One second, Kat." Alyssa turned to the camera. "Now she's become the laptop. The laptop is her body now, but she still has her human mind and everything. But since she's a laptop, she can also use all its processing power and memory, and all the other stuff it has. And that goes both ways: since this laptop has a human mind and personality controlling it now, it isn't just a dumb machine anymore."
She turned to Kat. "Okay, look through the thousands of disorganized photos I have and find the one of me holding a cute little puppy in front of the fountain at the park...actually I took a few; find the one where the puppy is looking at me."
Alyssa waited as Kat went through all the photos with the speed of a computer, analyzing them in a way that, with the current day's technology, only a human mind could. In what couldn't have been more than five seconds, the picture Alyssa was looking for appeared on the screen, as Kat's voice came from the speakers. "Found it!"
"Great!" said Alyssa, turning the laptop so its screen was more visible to the camera. "Now change it so I'm sitting down on the edge of the fountain, and the puppy is sitting on top of my head. Oh, and make it night time."
In only a couple seconds, Kat had made exactly the changes Alyssa requested. Turning to the camera, Alyssa smiled said, "Try doing that in Photoshop." She turned back to the laptop. "Save that, not over the original though. Then come on out." Kat did as instructed, sitting back down on the couch after coming out of the laptop.
"See what I'm talking about now?" said Alyssa. "Pretty amazing, isn't it?"
"Really, this'll change how you do everything," said Kat. "I seriously can't imagine how people in your world live without it. We use it for everything."
"Oh, and it's not just electronics," said Alyssa. "You can imprint on pretty much anything you want. How about telling them about some of the things you've been?"
"Well, let's see," said Kat, laughing. "Yesterday I was a tree, that's always real relaxing. I've been my car—where I'm from that's just the normal way to drive, but when Lyssi here tried it she thought it was amazing and made driving so much easier." Kat laughed, then thought for a moment. "Once I was bored and I imprinted on my space heater, just to see what it was like," she laughed.
"Really?" said Alyssa, laughing herself. "What was it like?"
"Well, there was lots of electricity going through me, making part of me red hot," she laughed. "Sounds painful to you, but to a heater it actually feels real good. You know, fulfilling my purpose and all that."
Alyssa thought of something. "Oh, Kat, tell them about when you became the air. Now that was cool." She remembered Kat suggested Alyssa try it, which she planned to do as soon as she finished the video.
"That one took some practice," said Kat. "But it's pretty awesome, even by my world's standards. Here, I'll show you." Kat closed her eyes as her body evaporated. Her voice echoed throughout the room. "I love this feeling, like I'm everywhere at once." A strong wind blew across the room, blowing Alyssa's laptop closed and making some papers fly off the table. "Oops, sorry, I'll get those!" Kat's clear, pink, vaporous form appeared kneeling in front of the table. She held out her arms near the papers on the floor, and shaped her arms into a swirling tunnel of wind, putting them back on the table. The pink, Kat-shaped cloud then appeared to almost melt, her pink vapor spreading across the floor, filling the bottom of the entire room. Alyssa reached to the floor with both hands and threw the vapor into the air. As it floated in the air, the vapor took on a shape resembling Kat's face, winking at the camera. Kat then collected the vapor into the shape of her body again, this time sitting on the couch, as her vaporous body faded back into her solid, human body.
"I love doing that," she said, smiling.
Without much thought, Alyssa reached behind her and touched the wall. The wall rippled where she touched it, as Alyssa's body was sucked in. The wall turned light blue with a white cloud design on it, like wallpaper. Her face appeared on the wall, much larger than her human face. "Hey everyone!"
"Oh, that's right," Kat said as she looked at the wall that was now Alyssa, then looked back at the camera. "You can make your human features appear too, so you can talk and stuff even if whatever you're inhabiting can't."
"Hey Kat, can you please point the camera up so they can see the ceiling too?"
Kat nodded and stood up, doing as Alyssa asked, knowing exactly what she was going to do next. As she sat back down, Alyssa (as the face on the wall) closed her eyes, as her face moved up to the ceiling. As soon as it crossed the corner, the wall faded back to normal as the ceiling took on the design instead.
"Oh, this is cool," Alyssa said. "I'm looking down on everything in the room at once!"
Just then, Kat reached for the same wall Alyssa had initially imprinted on, making sure she was reaching high enough for the camera to see, and imprinted on it herself. The wall changed design again, this time turning black with hot pink and purple zig-zagged stripes. Kat's face appeared on the wall. "Hey, Lyssi!"
"Hi Kat!" said Alyssa. "Thanks for holding me up!"
"My pleasure," laughed Kat. "It's what I'm here for."
Just then Alyssa emerged from the ceiling, landing cleanly on the couch where she had been sitting before. Kat did the same as she emerged from the wall, while Alyssa adjusted the camera back to where it was before.
"So I'm sure the question on your mind is, how do I do this myself?"
"Well, more likely 'how are they making those amazing special effects?'" Alyssa said to her, giggling.
"Yeah, true," Kat said, laughing with her. "But I swear, this is all 100% real. I wish I could prove it to you right now. Seriously though, try it. Because what happened when you first tried it, Alyssa?"
"Okay, you saw how the wall rippled when I imprinted on it?" said Alyssa. She touched the wall again to demonstrate, making it ripple again but not actually imprinting on it. "Like that? That happens whenever you imprint on something," she said. "On my very first try, imprinting on this couch, I couldn't actually do it, but it definitely rippled a little. Kat saw it."
"Yeah, that's when we both knew people here can in fact learn to do it," said Kat. "So anyway, here's how I explained it to Alyssa. Try this yourself, repeatedly. Have someone else watching, or record yourself doing it, in case something interesting happens that you can't see. I swear, this is completely real, and if you do it, you'll be glad you did."
Kat continued. "If you've never done it before, the easiest way to do it is just to relax completely, and close your eyes. Then you focus on your personality. Everything in your mind that most defines who you are, and your existence. Focus on that only. Then just try to feel it moving into whatever you're imprinting on," she explained. "I had Alyssa first try with the couch, because she was already relaxing on top of it, so it was easy. That's what I recommend starting with."
"Just keep practicing!" Alyssa instructed. "I can't say that enough. I learned real fast, and I was just as surprised when I first saw Kat do it as you probably are now," she said. Alyssa laughed a little. "Well, actually, probably a lot more, because I actually saw it with my own eyes." She looked at Kat and nodded, indicating she was done talking.
"So yeah, that's about all we really have to say," said Kat. "Can you think of anything else, Alyssa?"
"Let me think...oh!" she exclaimed. "Show them the other things you can do!"
"Oh yeah, like changing my body and my clothes, right?"
"Yeah, they'll love it!"
"Yeah, Alyssa hasn't been able to figure this out yet. But I'm sure she'll get it eventually. This is where people in my dimension get their clothes," said Kat as she stood up. She closed her eyes to demonstrate. Her outfit shimmered, reshaping itself into a long, black dress, just long enough to touch the floor, before she opened her eyes. Posing for the camera, she closed her eyes again and did a pirouette, her dress turning purple as she spun, the skirt lifting into the air. She opened her eyes again. "See?" she said, as she sat back down.
"Ooh, show them what you showed me the other day!" said Alyssa.
"Oh, you mean when I copied your outfit?"
"Yeah, and you improved on it too!"
"Oh yeah, let me show them." Kat closed her eyes once more, her purple dress shimmering as it turned into an exact duplicate of Alyssa's outfit. She shook her hair out, turning it blonde and making it match Alyssa's style. She then stood up and twirled a couple times, changing her appearance just as she did that first time, with the light blue dress, long hair, earrings and tiara, as she opened her eyes.
Alyssa once again looked at Kat in admiration. "You really are pretty," she said. "Not that you aren't normally, but...you know I like that look."
"Thank you!" Kat said, sitting back down on the couch. She looked at Alyssa. "Anything else you think they want to see?"
"Not that I can really think of," said Alyssa.
"Okay then, bye everyone!" said Kat. She closed her eyes and let her body evaporate again as she imprinted on the air. A second later, she re-formed behind the camera and pushed the button. "Oh crap, it wasn't recording!"
"What?" yelled Alyssa.
"Just kidding," said Kat as she smiled.
"Oh, good," Alyssa laughed in relief.
Alyssa took the camera from the tripod and plugged it into the computer, copying the video to the hard drive. She opened YouTube and uploaded it, making sure to mark it as "private"—only for the time being, of course. She had promised Tara, the woman from the store, the opportunity to see it before anyone else, after all. Alyssa sent her the link, eager to see what she thought.
And she was surprised when she got an email back in less than a minute, way too long to not have been pre-typed. The subject? "DO NOT POST THE VIDEO."
