The next morning, Alyssa came downstairs just as Kat was getting up. "Sleep well?" she asked.
"Slept great," said Kat as she stood up. "Thank you so much for letting me stay here."
"Certainly!" said Alyssa, smiling. When Kat stood up, Alyssa noticed she was wearing a long, black nightgown, with pink and purple spots on it, instead of her outfit from the day before. "Hey, where did you get that?" she asked, not thinking she would have had any opportunity to find a change of clothes.
"Get what?" asked Kat.
"That nightgown," replied Alyssa.
"What do you mean?" said Kat. "This is just what I wear to sleep." She closed her eyes and her nightgown shimmered, as it morphed into her previous outfit. When Kat opened her eyes, Alyssa was staring at her not unlike the day before, when she had first demonstrated her imprinting ability. "Something wrong, Alyssa?" Kat asked as she noticed her expression.
"...How did you do that?" asked Alyssa in amazement.
"Do what?"
"Change your outfit like that."
"What, you mean this?" Kat closed her eyes again and changed back into her nightgown. "I just think of what I want to wear and make it appear, like usual." She demonstrated again, changing back to her usual outfit.
Alyssa just looked at her, wide-eyed.
"Wait, is that another thing you don't have in this dimension?" Kat asked. "How do you change your clothes?"
"I just take them off with my hands, and put new ones on," explained Alyssa, understanding why the method she was familiar with wouldn't be at all familiar to Kat.
"So wait, before you put new clothes on, you're naked?" asked Kat. "What if there's other people there? And where do you even get the new clothes?"
"Well generally we do it in private," explained Alyssa. "And we get new clothes from stores that sell them, just like anything else. Where do you think?"
"Really? That sucks," said Kat, thinking about how annoying it would be to have yet another thing to need to spend money on. "Wait, what are the odds you'll find exactly what you're looking for?"
"I don't know, when I shop for clothes I don't really have anything specific in mind," said Alyssa. "I just pick out things I like." Alyssa sat down on the couch. "But that would be so cool if I could do it like you can. So can you create like any style you want?"
"Yeah, pretty much," said Kat. "Watch." Kat closed her eyes and her outfit shimmered again, turning into an exact duplicate of Alyssa's. She ran her fingers through her hair, in one instant tossing it with a flourish, as it turned the same shade of blond as Alyssa's hair before falling back down.
"Ooh, pretty!" said Alyssa in amazement.
"Of course you'd say that," laughed Kat. "You are pretty though."
"Aww, thanks Kat!" said Alyssa.
"Sure! Hey, what do you think of this?" Kat closed her eyes again and did an elegant twirl. As she did, her shirt grew into a long dress, falling below her knees. At the same time, her pants faded away, and her shoes turned the same light blue, morphing into high heels as they shimmered. Kat half-opened her eyes again to show they were now a matching shade of blue.
"Now you're even prettier!" said Alyssa! "I wish I could do that!"
"Hold on, I'm not done," said Kat. She gently closed her eyes again, slightly tilting her head to left, and then her right, golden sapphire earrings instantly appearing on each ear as she did. Putting her hands to her temples, she closed her eyes tighter, clearly deeper in concentration than before. As she did this, her hair, already longer than Alyssa's, put itself in a long, curly ponytail that grew down to her legs, similarly-curly locks of hair falling in front of her face. At the same time, a sapphire tiara appeared on her head that matched her new earrings. Kat gave one quick, final twirl, as twinkling sparkles appeared on her dress and shoes, and her nails turned light blue, at the same time becoming shinier and more prominent.
When Kat opened her eyes, Alyssa was just staring in amazement. "That's...so amazing," she said, her hands clasped together in admiration. "You're beautiful! Can you teach me to do that too? Please?"
"I'd love to," she said. "I just hope I can."
"Wait," Alyssa said, feeling Kat's new jewelry. "Are these real? Could you sell them?"
"Sell them for what?" Kat laughed as she sat down on the couch next to Alyssa, her entire appearance turning back to normal as she did. "Is jewelry really valuable in this dimension for some reason?"
"Oh, yes," Alyssa answered.
"Not where I'm from," said Kat. "Why would it be if you can just instantly create whatever you want on your body?"
"That's true," Alyssa laughed.
"Besides, it's all just a projection of my mind," Kat continued. "Just like when I imprint, when my personality's no longer present, it goes back to normal."
"Makes sense," said Alyssa. "So what do you think would be easier for me to learn first? Imprinting, or changing my outfit like you just did?"
"Probably imprinting," answered Kat. "With that you don't really need to think about much, because everything's already there." Kat demonstrated, the light-blue couch rippling as she sank into it. As expected, it turned black with pink accents. A zig-zag stripe pattern, also in pink, appeared across the couch as well. Kat enjoyed having Alyssa sit on her, but she didn't tell her, afraid she'd take it the wrong way.
"See?" asked Kat. "The couch already exists, so I don't really have to think about what it looks like. I just become it."
"But it did change," said Alyssa, referring to how its style changed. "Doesn't that take some thought?"
"Oh that just happens on its own," explained Kat. "It's my personality entering the couch and altering the way it looks. It's not something I really have to think about." The stripes and accents on the couch cycled through the colors of the rainbow a few times before settling back on pink. "I can change it if I really want to though."
"Wait, how are you talking to me?" asked Alyssa. "The couch doesn't have speakers or anything."
"Look to your left," said Kat.
Alyssa did as Kat instructed. She gave a quick yell as she was taken aback, as she noticed Kat's face on the back cushion next to her. It was larger than normal, and except for her eyes it was made of fabric instead of human skin, but other than that it was an exact replica of Kat's face.
"When you imprint you can keep some of your human characteristics if you want," explained Kat's face. "There weren't any speakers or anything like in your car or your laptop, so I made my face appear so I could talk to you."
Kat's face faded from the cushion, and her human body emerged from the seat she had been sitting in, as the color of the couch returned to normal. "You want me to try and show you how to do it now?" she asked.
"Sure, go ahead."
"Okay, it should become more natural as you do it, but I'll try to make it easy to start," Kat began. "Close your eyes, and relax as much as you can."
Alyssa did as instructed.
"Now focus on your personality, not your human body, but just the part of you that makes you...well, you," Kat instructed. "Try and feel it moving from your body into the couch. Don't focus on putting your body in the couch; it will follow on its own."
Alyssa tried for a whole minute, but nothing happened. Toward the end, Kat thought she saw the surface of the couch ripple a bit, but it quickly stopped. Alyssa, of course, couldn't see this, as she had her eyes closed.
"Nothing's happening," she said, disappointed. "What if it's more than just my dimension never having discovered it? Are you sure humans aren't just different here, and can't physically do it?"
"Well no, I was never sure of that," admitted Kat. "But for a second it looked like you were doing it. I'd say you certainly have the potential!"
Alyssa's eyes brightened. "Really?" she said, excitedly. She might actually learn to do this, she thought.
"Yeah!" said Kat. "I saw the couch ripple a bit, like how it starts when I imprint." She held up her hand. "High five?"
Alyssa excitedly high-fived her friend.
"Just keep practicing," said Kat. "If you don't eventually get it on your own, I have a trick that should really help you learn."
"What is it?" asked Alyssa, curious what this trick might be.
"I'd rather surprise you when we're ready, that okay?" asked Kat with a smirk. "I'll tell you one thing though," she said. "If it is something you can learn—which now I'm almost positive it is—this will definitely make it much easier to understand how to do it," said Kat. "You'll be imprinting in no time!" She gave Alyssa a pat on the back.
"That's great!" exclaimed Alyssa, excitedly. "I can't wait! ...But why can't you just do that trick now?"
"It's not a good idea to do it unless you really know the other person, very closely," explained Kat. "That's another reason I want to try and find another way first, so we can share it with everyone, not just our closest friends."
"That makes sense," said Alyssa. "But why do you need to know the other person?"
"You'll see why," said Kat. "But don't worry," she continued. "That shouldn't take very long at all."
