Andrew was falling asleep at the wheel.

He was tired, spending the last three days driving, barely sleeping and drinking as much coffee as he could manage. Right now he was down an empty stretch of highway, hoping for the bright flash of light from an oncoming car to startle him awake. Shaking his head, he turned on the radio. There was no signal out here, not deep in the forest. The trees were about ten, twenty feet from the edge of the road on either side, a steep ditch in between the forest and the road. Andrew sighed, hitting himself slightly.

"C'mon, stay awake," He mumbled to himself. A few minutes later, he was asleep, foot on the gas pedal.

Next thing he knew, there was a blare of a horn from an oncoming truck. Andrew shouted, spinning the wheel, trying to get out of its path. He narrowly missed crashing, only to spin out of control and head for the ditch to his right. There was a thud as the car hit something (a rock, Andrew thought), and he careened into the ditch.

Andrew blacked out for a few minutes as his ears ran, the engine clicking as it cooled down. Reaching for the seat belt, he clicked the release button, feeling the belt rub against his chest as it was pulled up. Wincing, he felt for the car door handle and pulled, sliding out of the car and to the ground. Steam or smoke rose from the hood of the car. Something sticky ran down Andrew's face, and he guessed that he was bleeding. Sitting on the ground, he looked over to his left and saw something on the road, in the path his car had taken when it crashed. Curious, he slowly stood, staggering over to what looked like a mass of black rags. Andrew gasped once he saw what it really was.

The skunk seemed perfectly healthy, aside from the fact that its back legs were broken and shattered into a messy pulp, thanks to Andrew's tires. There was no way the skunk could survive its wounds, quite frankly, it probably had minutes to live. It looked up at Andrew, fear and pain in its eyes. He took a step back. Even as the skunk lay there dying, it still rose its tail in a defensive state.

"No, no, no," Andrew pleaded with it. "I'm not going to…" He was cut off as the skunk sprayed him. He shouted, the pungent smelling liquid getting into his eyes, nose and open mouth. The spray even got into the cut on his head, making him cry out as it felt like his head was on fire. Blinded, he staggered away, the events of the past few minutes taking its toll.

Andrew passed out five feet after running into the forest.

The next thing Andrew was aware of was standing naked in the middle of a well-lit forest clearing.

"Hello?" He cried out, turning around. What kind of dream was this?

"This isn't a dream," A voice said behind him. Andrew spun, looking down as he saw a skunk looking up at him. Just like the logic of a dream, he instantly knew that it was the skunk that had spoken. "This is a state of shared consciousness." Andrew blinked.

"Uh, okay…" He said. "So, why am I here?"

"You're here because you killed my mate," The skunk said, and the scene around them changed, turning into the dark road where Andrew had crashed. He saw the whole scene replay; the car narrowly avoiding him, swerving and running over the hind legs of the skunk, fatally injuring it, getting out of the car, getting sprayed, and passing out. Only instead of fading away, Andrew watched as the wounded skunk attempted to pull herself away.  Andrew watched guiltly and sadly as the skunk stopped and lay still, quite obviously dead.

"She was pregnant," Said the male skunk. "Our kits were to be born in a few moon's time. And you killed them just as surely as you killed her," The skunk said bitterly.

"Hey, it was an accident," Andrew protested. "It wasn't my fault."

"Tell that to my children," The skunk snapped, turning around and raising its tail. "There is still a chance for redemption. You will have to raise my kits."

"No, wait," Andrew began before the skunk sprayed him. This time was different, however. This time, the burning spread across his entire body. He collapsed to his knees in pain, watching as black fur spread across his body like a blanket, white fur covering his feet and hands also two white lines of fur grew on his face and back, although he didn't see that. He breathed heavily as he felt his chest expand, fat and tissue rearranging, growing as two unmistakably female breasts appeared. Growling as he felt his organs rearranging, pushing around as his manhood was sucked up with a sickening slurping sound, testicles moving far into his body and becoming ovaries, scrotum and penis becoming a uterus. Now female Andrew heard her bones creak and groan as her hips grew, waist shrinking and ass expanding, giving Andrew an hourglass figure. Legs and arms became slimmer, more feminine as her hands became claws, feet doing the same as they rose and became digitigrades. A large, fluffy skunk's tail exploded out of Andrew's spine, white and black markings appearing on it. Andrew's hair grew longer, face pushing out into a muzzle, Adam's apple disappearing. Andrew coughed, now hearing her new voice. Panting, she leaned forward, feeling like she was going to throw up as she felt something grow inside her, moving around and expanding, filling her. Andrew fell back, landing on her ass as she watched her belly grow slightly, her breasts become firmer and grow as well. Instantly she realized that these were the kits the skunk had been talking about. She was now their mom.

"Oh my God," She said, starting to panic. "You made me pregnant."

"It was the only way to ensure my offspring would live," The skunk said. "They will be half human like yourself, but that is a small price to pay for their survival." The skunk turned, walking away.

"No!" Andrew cried. "Please! Don't do this to me! Don't leave me like this!"

"You can't," Andrew said weakly. "You can't leave me…" Blinking, Andrew sat up, looking down. Just like in her dream, she had become a skunk anthro. Rubbing her stomach, she figured she looked four or five months pregnant… and gave a startled scream as she felt something kick inside her. Moving carefully as she got up, she blinked as bright flashing lights shone in her eyes.

"Miss?" She heard someone ask her. Andrew looked around, seeing police cars and paramedics around the scene of the crash. Someone must have reported the accident. "Miss?" The voice repeated. She was so startled and tired and shocked, that she felt light headed for a moment and fell down, feeling arms catching her as she lost consciousness.

The entire story was blurted to a nurse four months later, as Andrea gave birth to three healthy infant skunks. The nurse was so shocked by the sincerity and urgency from Andrea (who was high on painkillers as she gave birth to her children), that as Andrea lay recuperating with her two daughters and one son, she searched some records. After a full night, the nurse found no trace of the human Andrew, no proof that the man had ever existed. It was possible that Andrea had thought she had been human due to a concussion brought on by the crash, but there was no evidence, physical or otherwise, that Andrea had ever been human at any point in time.

Checking in on Andrea, the nurse shook her head. Did it really matter? Andrea was safe, alive; her children were healthy and strong, and would live full lives. Did it really matter what Andrea told the nurse in a drug-crazed, traumatic state? The nurse decided it wasn't worth it, and walked off, not giving it another thought.

The male skunk looked in through the hospital window, watching Andrea and her kids sleep.

"Sleep well, my children," he whispered. "Your mother will raise you well… and I will always keep my eye on you." That said, the skunk jumped off the windowsill and into the bushes, walking and disappearing into the forest.
