"Ms. Mary Marrow, you are about to be known as the first living and conscious preserved head. Do you have any second hand thoughts?"
"Well, sadly no. The world is kind of dead at this point and nothing here is healthy," Mary said, "If being a head means to not die in the hospital, I guess it might be worth it."
"Then we shall do some evaluations. First off, thank goodness that you tied up your hair. It would make being a head more comfortable. Secondly, we will inject many shots into you. The pain will go away quickly."
Mary then show a bunch of odd chemicals injected into her skin as she felt a quick poke before losing all feeling from the neck below. She eventually felt a strange rush into her head as she felt her mind being energized. She then saw the scientists put a collar into her that not only contain more injections that no longer hurt, but an odd cold feeling at her neck. She then felt something get inside her throat as she felt like coughing a bit.
"Decapitation sequence complete, now preservation sequence begin."
Mary then felt her own head feels normal while the numb feeling below her neck remains. After some tweaking and such, there was a ring that shows that her operation was done. One of the scientist went to grab her head and held it up. Mary then suddenly feels smaller as she is taken to a sterile table. All Mary can do is cough for a bit as she saw what appears to be her body in the other side of the room.
"Did it work?" Mary asked as she breathed a little
"It was a success Mary! We just need to do some tests to see if you are dying in anyway. Since you spoke, responded somehow, and breathe, you pass the first and second test."
"That's great," Mary said, "So this is how it feels to be without a body. I don't even feel my dying kidneys no more."
"Of course since you no longer have your damaged body no more. We even took all the healthy components left in your body and put it into your head to restore it in a sense. Now you are as healthy as you can be."
"Honestly, I should just be grateful. Though could you scratch my nose for me? Kind of can't because, you know," Mary said.
The doctor immediately does so until Mary is satisfied. The doctor then proceed to do more tests that involves a physical test to make sure that all of her head is functional. Another is a sentience and consciousness test.
"So if there were a train that has it's brakes broken and is about to run over five people, would you turn the train only to kill one person?"
"Uhh... would rather turn the train, but this is really a hard question," Mary answered.
"You passed the test. We now know that you are capable of having emotions and a living being. Otherwise you would be strip of your human rights."
"Now that's uncalled for!" Mary said, "Just because I'm a sphere now doesn't mean I don't have feelings!"
"Now we need you to sing the Alphabet to ensure that you can do more than just talk."
"Fine," Mary said as she does so.
"Great! Now we just need to do a genetic test by our other scientist to ensure that your cells are not dying."
Some scientist came in and took many cell samples of Mary from her skin to hair. The head felt uncomfortable, but she has no choice in the matter. They just wanted to make sure that she is alive.
She was then shown in the mirror to see her disembodied form. She looked the same head wise with no sign of a neck. Just enough to stand her head straight on the table. Her ponytailed hair was useful in the fact that it didn't get all over her face. She was then shown what's up with the bottom of her head as it's just pure skin with some metal layer below it.
"We got more advance tests tomorrow, but don't worry, you won't be alone."
"What do you mean?" Mary asked.
"You'll see."
Mary is then taken to what would be a room meant to store living heads like her not in jars. There was no need to have a constant temperature or machinery, but just basic things to keep the place tidy and a bunch of shelves. Mary was then placed on one shelf as she saw her caregivers leave. She was recommended to sleep and so she does.
The next morning, Mary heard someone call for her.
"Good morning Mary."
Mary looked around with her limited vision as she saw on her left to be another head. After a more careful look and a small mirror on one of the ridges of the shelves in the opposite side, she was quite surprised. It was the head of the doctor of all people. The doctor look like Mary in terms of being a head except she has black bob-cut hair with brown eyes.
"Doctor?" Mary asked.
"You know its rude to not say good morning back," the doctor said.
"But, your head," Mary said.
"Oh, this. I always wanted to be one and you made it safe and possible Mary. Can't really have confidence in your work if you can't test it on yourself," the doctor said.
"I see. At least I got company," Mary said.
"Also just call me Sheila," the doctor said, "We're friends now unless they place you with other potential heads."
"Alright Sheila." Mary said.
"Now lets get ready for the advance tests," Sheila said, "I hope you could hold your breath because we're heading underwater."
"Why do I get the feeling that my head will be violated as time goes on?" Mary asked.
"People fear what they don't understand and you'll understand soon enough that this would rock," Sheila said, "You and I would go places and be famous! I might even win a Nobel Peace Prize and make more head friends."
"Okay," Mary said as she saw some caretakers holding her head as well as the doctor carefully to the advance tests.
