“Watcha doing, honey?”

My girlfriend Jess looked up from her laptop and a grin split her face.

“It’s up.”

“Up?”

“The new Body Works website. All the new enhancements. Come and see!”

I didn’t need any further encouragement. I practically leapt on the sofa.

Truth to tell, both Jess and I had been waiting for this year’s new parts. It was now kind of traditional for Body Works to tease a new website for a couple of weeks, then spring it on the public unannounced.

Had it really only been a few years since Body Works had come onto the scene, promising to change arms, legs, organs, genitals to sleek robotic parts? It seemed like so much longer. I remember the abuse they got, the fear campaigns, the denouncements from conservatives. Then the Supreme Court had affirmed the right of everyone to do whatever they wanted with their bodies and the fuss seemed to peter out.

Like tattoos and body piercing, robot limbs had started with the freaks and gradually spread to the general public. I’d passed a group of schoolgirls on my way home; all of them seemed to boast at least one silvery arm.

Jess smiled as she read the website’s opening message out loud.

“NEW YEAR! NEW PARTS! Body Works is proud to present its 2017 line up. Swap your flesh and blood limbs for sleek, modern Body Works parts. Do more, feel more, be more. Browse our new collections, and dream of a new world. Plus introducing the Brain Case treatment! The future of enhancement! Body Works — it’s YOU but BETTER!”

Jess sighed with pleasure as we began to scroll through the pictures and descriptions. As always, most of the parts were arms, legs and hands. Silver and hard white plastic, they looked more like something Apple Computers had dreamt up than a limb.

Some of the limbs were “techno-organic”, and I still had no idea what the hell that was, except that it looked and felt more like a traditional human body part. Others had “holograph mode”, which would make your arms or legs appear to be human. I couldn’t imagine it being very popular. Who would want to hide these beautiful marvels of technology?

“Look at these!” Jess giggled. Body Works had launched a new steampunk line, all clockwork and brass. They looked gorgeous. At the other end of the spectrum was a line obviously inspired by Tron, with brilliant neon lighting set into the limbs.

But what really set us cooing were the engraved lines. Engraving had taken off in the past year as a kind of substitute for tattooing, and the site was full of pictures of models with pictures and elaborate designs etched into their silvery limbs … and even backs.

My eyes opened wide — okay, wider — when we got to the genitals section.

“God! Look at the size of that thing!” I said. Jess giggled.

“Uh, these ones are intended for women,” she informed me.

“Really? For women???”

“Yeah, some of them have two parts in one, so you can swap your female bits for male bits to liven up your sex life. Others just sort of slot into your robot pussy and click into place, like a feeldoe.”

“Like a … what?”

“Andy, sometimes I think you’ve lived a very sheltered life,” she smirked.

I let it pass. “So what do the ones for men look like?”

She showed me.

Christ on a bicycle.

Some of them were like elephant trunks. Some were like tentacles. There were maces. Spikes. One that opened up like the worm in Dune.

There was one, I couldn’t figure out exactly what it was or did. All I knew was it had a big warning against it: ‘’FOR USE ONLY WITH A BODY WORKED PARTNER! DO NOT USE WITH HUMAN GENITALS!”

“Apparently you can change the level of orgasms you experience,” Jess added loftily. “From, like, oh that’s nice, to earth-shattering.”

She clicked on a new page.

I gasped at one of the models. Human from the waist up, and from the waist down … glass. See-through glass, with wires and metal coiling down inside. She looked well pleased with her bottom half, and so she should.

Then there were the tails. Apparently tails were the new big thing with those who had replaced their asses with mechanics. Some were furry, like a fox; others were long, like a cat; and others still … were clearly not based on anything living.

As we progressed, less and less of the models was human and more and more of them mechanical.

We were fascinated by the models, both male and female, who were almost entirely robotic. Some of them had gleaming silver bodies; others shining white plastic; yet others looked like fetish models in black latex. Some had human heads atop robot bodies. Others had smooth round silver heads, with a human face set into it.

“How do they do that?” I marvelled.

“Well, they cut off your face and your skull and nervous system,” Jess said matter-of-factly.

“I don’t know if that’s the sexiest thing I’ve ever heard, or the scariest.” A shiver ran through me.

“Apparently it’s a painless procedure. You feel nothing.”

So what went further than someone with just a human face?

Someone with no face.

We were silent as we gazed at the final model. An exaggeratedly female body, albeit one that was made of steel. And on top of that … a ball. A black ball, about the size of a softball.

Fuck.

I noticed a video embedded on the page and clicked it.

“Aria is showing off Body Works’ latest innovation, the Brain Case. She’s chosen to have her brain removed and encased, so it’s easily removable and fits in any number of bodies,” a voiceover droned.

We saw Aria around her home, as she swapped her brain out from this strange, surreal body of hers to a very human-looking body — more techno-organic stuff, I’m sure — and into others, such as a kind of vehicle, and a computer that could activate her entire house — in effect she would become her house.

The final seconds of the video showed her back in the body with the ball head, running through a catwalk routine, as the voiceover explained how she had 360 degree vision, how every part of that black ball could see and hear.

The video ended, and Jess closed the website.

We just sat there, stunned, looking at each other.

“Oh God,” I whispered.

“I know,” Jess nodded.

“That was …”

“ … so fucking hot.”

“Amazingly hot.”

We looked at each other.

“Would you like that, babe?” I said softly. “Would you like to go … all the way?”

“Would I?” Jess considered, then smiled. “Oh yeah. Oh yeahhhhh.”

“Imagine, just being able to switch bodies like that.”

“I wouldn’t have to look human at all. I wouldn’t have to be human at all.”

“God. I love your body, Jess, but imagine just leaving it all behind …”

“Would you be kind to my brain case? Look after it? Fondle it?” Jess smirked.

“You know it.”

I shifted uncomfortably. Well, that part of mine definitely wasn’t robotic.

Jess got up from the sofa. “I think I need to …”

“Me too.”

I got up too, and she enfolded me in her arms.

Her beautiful, engraved, shiny silver arms.

“You know it’s your turn for the parts next,” she whispered in my ears.

I was looking forward to it. I considered — arms like my girl? Legs? Even … genitals?

Maybe one day we would both be fully Body Worked. That black ball was damn sexy.
