“You have reached the voicemail of Olivia Whickett. Please leave a message after the tone.”

Beep.

“Oh, hey, Olivia, it’s Jane. Uh, I need to speak to you about something and I wondered if you were free for lunch tomorrow. No need to call me back, I’ll be at the Park Cafe at noon. See ya.”

*

“So what did you want to talk to me about?”

Olivia sat opposite from Jane. Silently her friend rolled the sleeve of her long-sleeved T-shirt up to reveal a small adhesive bandage.

“You got the shot?” Olivia dropped her voice. “Congratulations! You’re going to have so much fun!”

“I couldn’t not get it, not after hearing about all the stuff you and Jon get up to,” Jane confessed. “After that dinner, I spent the past week thinking about it, and finally I booked myself in for the ChangeSerum injection.”

“You won’t regret it. Being able to become anything, at any time, is so amazing. Jon and I are already booked in for our next round of shots. Did they tell you about the tingling sensation? When that begins, you’re ready to change.”

“Actually, it’s been tingling ever since I got up,” Jane said. “But I’m really nervous about changing. I wondered if after lunch we could go back to your place, and you could guide me through it?”

“Sure, love to. Let’s have a quick bite and get out of here - your body must be bursting to change. Oh,” she laughed on seeing Jane’s panicked look, “I didn’t mean that literally.”

*

“So what kind of changes did you and Jon do first?” Jane said, picking at her salad.

“Well, after the initial burst of just wanting to be everything, we probably did the obvious things.” Olivia smiled at the memory.

“Like what?”

“Increasing boobs size, things like that. Actually, that first week we just turned into every celebrity we’d ever had a crush on. Like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.”

“Jon turned into Brad Pitt?”

“Nope.”

“You don’t mean - he was Angelina?”

“My lips are sealed,” Olivia said with a laugh. “Actually, now I think about it, we were pretty conservative that first couple of weeks. I think we were afraid a change could hurt or even kill us. But as we experimented more, the more we realised we couldn’t get hurt. So we really began to push the limits.”

“Like how?”

“Well, changing into food and being eaten, for instance.”

Jane almost choked. “Eaten?”

“Yes, it’s a rare day when either Jon or myself aren’t on the menu,” grinned Olivia. “Starting the day with a Jon coffee really sets you up right.”

“That sounds so weird.”

“Wait until you try it. You wouldn’t believe how sexy being consumed can be.”

Jane threw down her fork. “Oh my God, this tingling is really itching now!”

“It’s the serum in your molecules wanting to transform,” Olivia said sympathetically. “Once you change, it’ll stop. So how about we skip coffee and head back to my place?”

*

“Want a drink?” Olivia asked as she let herself into her apartment.

“No, I want to change!” Jane said, shuffling from one foot to another.

Olivia laughed. “OK, I can see you’re anxious to get going, so come and sit on the sofa with me.”

The two women took their places, facing each other.

“I don’t know if you’ve seen the ChangeSerum website, but they have a list of things they recommend for a first transformation,” Olivia said. “Let’s run through some of them. First, I’ll try something, then you try doing the same thing.”

“OK.”

“Here’s a classic - hair colour. I’m blonde, so for contrast I’m going to change to black hair.” Olivia half-closed her eyes. As Jane watched, a spot of black appeared at the crown of her hair and rippled over it, until Olivia was black-haired.

It was such a simple thing, but Jane found herself extremely impressed, as much with the ease of the change as the change itself.

“Well, this is a new look for me,” Olivia smiled. “Now you try. You’ve got dark brown hair, so try becoming a blonde.”

Jane’s nerves jangled. She was actually going to do it. She was actually going to change her body. “I’m not sure what I should do.”

“With fresh ChangeSerum in you, you shouldn’t have to do too much. Just try to picture yourself as a blonde. Remember, your body wants to change.”

Jane closed her eyes. Blonde, she thought, I want to be blonde. She pictured blonde hair.

The tingling, which had been steadily growing, suddenly subsided. She opened her eyes. “Did it work? Did I do it?”

“Go look in the mirror,” Olivia grinned.

Jane crossed the room to look at her reflection. Her blonde-haired reflection.

It was such a little thing, but she felt like crying tears of joy. She’d done it! She was a transformer. She’d joined the club.

She tossed her hair, looking at the blonde locks. They didn’t look dyed, they looked completely natural.

She grinned in triumph at Olivia. “Transformation number one!”

“Come sit back down and we’ll try number two,” Olivia said.

“OK, what’s that?”

“Eye colour. Here, watch.” Olivia blinked, and her blue eyes had become lilac.

“Woah! I don’t think I’ve ever seen eyes that colour before.”

“Your turn. Pick a colour.”

Jane closed her eyes. When she opened them, her brown eyes were now green. She ran to the mirror to check them out.

She laughed. This was easier than she thought it would be! Olivia was right, her body did want to change. The tingling was gone and she’d never felt better.

“Maybe we should adjourn to the bedroom,” Olivia suggested. “The built-in wardrobe has a mirrored door. It’ll make it easier to see your transformations.”

The two women splayed out on the bed. “So, what next?” Jane asked.

“Some more body adjustments. Here’s one that Jon always enjoys.” And Olivia’s chest suddenly ballooned out.

“Oh, that’s not good for your bra,” Jane winced.

“Actually, I changed my bra size along with my boobs. You should be able to do it too. Come on, try!”

Jane concentrated on pushing her boobs out. She could feel them expand, but they didn’t fill up like Olivia’s had.

“Oh God!” she said, staring at her reflection. “I look like I have two torpedoes strapped to my chest!”

Olivia laughed. “Try to round them out. Slowly now. That’s better.”

Jane couldn’t help cupping her new breasts. “Imagine walking into a bar with these babies.”

“You’d blow a few minds, for sure.”

“A few minds, and my back too. How do I make them smaller again?”

“Just think about your usual form.” Both women’s breasts deflated to their usual sizes.

“Hey, here’s one I discovered the other day.” And as Jane watched, Olivia’s neck began to extend itself, rising above her shoulders until it was two feet long.

“Hey down there!”

“Oh, I don’t like being alone down here. Think I’ll join you.” And Jane’s neck extended too, eventually winding itself around Olivia’s. Then Olivia began to stretch out her arm. Jane joined her, and the girls stretched their limbs around until they were wound up against each other.

They couldn’t help it, they began to giggle. “We’re like a human rubber band ball,” Olivia laughed.

“Is that your foot or mine?”

“Let me stretch and see … oh, it’s mine.”

“We better be careful, we need to be able to change back.”

“Yeah, imagine being stuck in a knot together. I’d have to get Jon to untie us. Anyway, reform yourself on the count of three!”

The girls found themselves back to normal on the bed. Jane clapped her hands in childish glee. “More! More!”

“Hey, you’ve got six months to change!” Olivia grinned.

“It won’t be enough. It’ll never be enough.”

“I know, I know … OK, I think you’re ready to try being an animal. And this time, I’m just going to watch.”

“Do I get to pick the animal?”

“Sure. Just picture one you really like.”

Jane closed her eyes. She realised she didn’t have to do so in order to change, but at this stage it made it easier for her to conjure up an image for her transformation. This time around she thought of a cat, in particular her sister’s black and white fur-ball …

She gasped as she felt herself shrinking and opened her eyes wide. Olivia seemed to be growing much larger, while she felt her head change shape, whiskers sprout from her cheeks, her hands turn to paws, and a tail spring out of her behind. Finally a kind of rippling ran over her body, leaving her with fur.

“Oh my God!” she said, raising one paw. “I’m a cat!” Then she did a double take. “Oh my God! I’m a talking cat!”

“Yeah, usually you can push your human characteristics to the fore,” Olivia said. “You can be a table lamp and kind of imprint yourself on it. Jon says I talk more as an inanimate object than anything else.”

Jane leapt off the bed and walked about, marvelling at her new paws. She was disconcerted to find her eyesight more limited, with certain colours vanishing from her spectrum, but a much sharper sense of smell.

“Aw, you’re so cute,” Olivia grinned. And she began to tickle Jane under her chin. Jane loved it.

“Okay, now you’re an animal, we’ll try something else,” Olivia said. “It’s possible to meld your human and animal forms, so you’re a mix of both. It’s called an anthro-change. Here, watch.”

Olivia’s form changed quickly. Her ears vanished, replaced by cat ears peeking through her hair. Her nose changed too, becoming more cat-like, while her eyes changed so they became slitted. Her skin was lightly covered with grey fur. Wildest of all, a tail forced itself out of her jeans.

“Now I’m a cat-girl,” she said. “Part girl, part cat.”

“Let me try!” Jane’s form shifted, growing larger but still retaining most of her cat features, until two cat-girls sat together.

“This is so great!” Jane said. Then she became aware of a strange noise. It took her a second or two to place it. “Hey! I’m purring!”

“Guess you must be enjoying yourself,” Olivia laughed. “How about we move onto something else?”

“Sure! What?”

“Something small.” And Olivia seemed to vanish.

“Olivia? Where are you?” How small had she become?

Jane heard the buzzing first, then saw the bee flying around her. “Olivia? That’s … that’s you?”

“Sure is!” the bee said chirpily. “Don’t worry, I won’t sting. Just do what I did! You won’t believe how good flying is!”

She hesitated a bit. A bee? She didn’t like bees at all. Then she mentally shrugged and followed Olivia’s lead.

Again she felt herself shrinking, this time becoming much smaller. The bedroom seemed like a much larger, emptier space now. She felt her body, so strangely arranged, and rubbed her tiny arms together. The instinct to fly overtook her, and she launched herself into the air.

Olivia had been right. Flying was amazing. Her wings buzzed and she circled the room before landing next to Olivia on the bed.

“I could get used to this!” she said.

“And being a bird is even better! Jon flies to the office most days now. Beats the subway!”

Olivia changed back, and a second or two later Jane followed.

“So we’ve done body changes, animals, an insect … what now?”

“Now,” grinned Olivia, “you’re ready to be an inanimate object.”

And Jane became nervous all over again. “Uh, I don’t know if I like the sound of that. The idea of not having a mind doesn’t exactly thrill me.”

“What have you been reading?” Olivia said, amused. “You’re just changing your form, that’s all. You don’t lose your mind … well, unless you really want to. Sometimes just letting your mind drift away and really becoming an object is amazing. It’s really relaxing.”

“So we’re just mimicking the object we’ve turned into?”

“If you want to think of it like that. Although you’re mimicking something so closely, you might just as well be the object. When I turn into an electric razor, for example, my insides are exactly what you’d find in a real electric razor. I’m mechanical parts, making up something larger.”

Jane looked at Olivia quizzically. “Why exactly would you turn into an electric razor?”

“Jon loves a smooth shave in the morning, and I love helping him out. Besides, being a machine is fun! But let’s change. We’ll try something easy for your first inanimate transformation. Be a ball.”

Jane was still somewhat nervous, but obeyed her friend. She stepped into the floor and tried to picture herself as a ball. She’d be small, and round …

And suddenly she was shrinking, and her arms and legs were vanishing into her body, which was inflating. She could feel her neck sinking into her body, then her head being swallowed up too …

It should have been terrifying, but instead she found it riveting. When she’d changed her body parts, she’d still been human, after all. Even changing into a cat or bee, she’d still had legs, arms, eyes … but now? She was something familiar but not remotely human. She didn’t breathe or eat. She was totally round, hollow inside, and …

“Green!” said Olivia, picking Jane up. “You’re a green ball, Jane. Great job!”

Jane said nothing. She was a ball, after all.

“If you want you can give yourself your own features, Jane. Just try to push your consciousness to the fore of the object.”

Jane wasn’t quite sure what that even meant, but hell, she’d go along with it. She tried to do what Olivia had said, and …

Olivia smiled as the ball developed two eyes and a mouth. These features didn’t protrude from the ball; rather, they looked like they were stickers stuck on it. “Clever girl.”

“It’s me, isn’t it?” Jane said. “I’m really a ball?”

“That you are. Feels incredible, doesn’t it?”

It really did. Being totally round was so alien to her usual self, yet absolutely thrilling. She could feel how her plastic self was merely a thin shell, containing empty air.

“So now, Jane,” Olivia said, “I’m going to do you a big favour.” And with that, she moved her arm back, then in a fluid motion let go of the ball, which promptly rolled along the floor, out of the door and into the hall.

Oh God! Jane was spinning! Moving at great speed, constantly in motion. She enjoyed a good roller-coaster ride, but this was better than any she’d been on!

She felt rather than saw the wall ahead of her, fast approaching, and she realised she was going to hit it …

Jane bounced.

She struck the wall and flew off, back down the hall, striking another wall before rolling, slower now, back into the bedroom at the end of the hall.

She must have changed back at some point, because he she was on the floor, looking up at Olivia, and almost babbling in delight.

“So good! So damned good! Bouncing … I mean … it was … why it did feel so good?!”

“Part of it was you were a ball, and what do balls do? They bounce. When you’re an object, there’s a strong desire to fulfil whatever use that object was intended for. So if you’re a cup, you want to be filled with something. If you’re a shower, you want someone to shower in you.”

“And if you’re a toilet …”

“Ugh. Let’s not go there.” Olivia grimaced. “Now let’s see, what should we try next?”

Jane was looking around the bedroom frantically. So many things to change into! Almost without thinking, she became a big fluffy pillow.

“Hey!” Olivia playfully punched the pillow. “Plenty of time to become inanimate at home. We’ve got things to try!”

Shifting back to human, Jane grinned at her friend. “What, then?”

“One of my favourites. Come into the kitchen.”

Olivia took a mug and placed it on the kitchen table. “Something I’ve really grown to love is changing not just forms, but states.”

“Meaning?”

“Changing from a solid to a liquid, or a vapour. There’s other stuff too. I’ve heard about a couple of women who like to turn into mercury in a pot of boiling water. That way they’re a solid and a liquid at the same time.”

Jane’s mind reeled. She couldn’t imagine how that would feel. Whoever came up with that idea must have one wild imagination. “Could we try that?”

“Sure, some other day. Right now I want you to try being a fluid. See this mug?” She held it up. “Totally dry. Now watch this.” She seemed to change in mid-air, as she became a brown liquid that poured itself into the cup without spilling a drop.”

Jane peered at the liquid, which had developed a little mouth on its surface. “Are you what I think you are?”

“That’s right, I’m coffee! Although I think I neglected to make myself hot, so I’m iced coffee.” And the coffee rose up, changing back into Olivia as it did so.

The cup was now completely dry again.

Olivia nodded at Jane. “Your turn.”

“I don’t think I can pour myself in like you.”

“No, that took me some practice, I’ll tell you. But try this - bend over and place a finger on the cup’s inside, then change yourself from there on.”

Easier said than done, Jane thought. But she’d give it a go …

Her finger fell away, transforming as it did so, with the rest of her following. She was becoming smaller too. And then she looked up from inside the mug.

Wow …

She’d thought becoming a ball was incredible. What had she been thinking? She’d still been a solid then. Now … now she was a liquid. She had no form at all. She flowed from the top to the bottom, from left to right. All of it her.

She thought wildly of all the other liquids she could turn into. Water, flowing freely down a sink … custard, a thicker, slower liquid … honey, almost a solid, dripping off a spoon …

Oh, she was going to have so much fun as a liquid.

Right now, though, being coffee was just perfect.

“Mmm!” Olivia said with a wicked grin as she picked the mug up. “Oh, Jane, you smell so good! Man, you make a great afternoon pick me up. And I never did get coffee at lunchtime …” She brought the mug up to her lips.

Oh yes! Jane thought with glee. Drink me! That’s what I’m here for!

She could feel herself in the mug, and she could feel herself in Olivia’s mouth, slipping down her throat like the best playground slide ever …

She hit Olivia’s stomach, and suddenly she was human again, standing next to Olivia, who was holding an empty mug.

“You did that deliberately!” she said.

“Uh-huh,” Olivia said. “I know how good being a liquid can be. Sometimes Jon has to drink me just to get me to change back, just like I did to you. But I did it so we could try something else.”

Olivia did her magic trick again, pouring herself back into the mug as coffee, then forming a face on its surface.

“Now Jane, stick your finger in me and change yourself into a serve of sugar!”

“But …”

“Just do it!”

Jane did, falling into the mug. Some of her sank straight to the bottom, while some of her floated about on the surface. Being made up of many different bits … this was something she wanted to try again. A lot.

Right now, though, Jane began to dissolve.

What an amazing feeling! She was going from a solid to not only becoming part of a liquid, but part of Olivia. It was as if she and her long-time friend were merging into one. There was no Olivia, no Jane, just the coffee, which was both of them.

Something even better was happening. This time around Olivia had made herself hot, and now the coffee was slowly cooling to room temperature. She would never have thought something so commonplace could be so engrossing.

The women simply stayed like that for a long time, all thoughts of lessons forgotten, calm and happy as sweetened coffee. Eventually, though, Olivia realised it was getting late and Jon would be home soon. Regretfully they changed back.

“Thanks so much for showing me the ropes, Olivia!” Jane beamed.

“My pleasure, and I mean that sincerely,” Olivia replied with a laugh. “I think we might make this a regular lunch date, no?”

“Try to keep me away! There’s so much stuff to be …”

“Well, how about one last change?”

“What did you have in mind?”

“Come into the living room … see that hook?”

There on the far wall, opposite the front door, was a patch of wall with space for a picture, and a hook for a picture, but no picture.

A realisation crept up on Jane. “You mean …”

“I’ve been becoming art,” Olivia finished. “I’ve been Impressionist, Abstract, Pointillist … So, pick an art style.”

“Oh, you … you know I’ve always loved the Pre-Raphaelites.”

“Great, let’s hold on to each other … here goes …”

And when Jon entered some many minutes later, he was greeted by a portrait of two lovely women wearing diaphanous gowns, much to his delight.

It didn’t take too much persuasion for Jane to stay for dinner.

Which eventually turned into Jane as dinner.
