Once upon a time, the School of the Unseen trained aspiring warriors in the ways of magic, stealth, and combat. Its reputation was impeccable, though its pupils were few. All was well. 

The school kept its reputation by culling those that would sully it. Pupils that were too cruel or too black of heart were expelled or imprisoned. However, one pupil was too dangerous for even the Unseen School to contain. Fantom took the lessons learned and used them for ill, releasing her cruel comrades like the notorious Zanthie onto the world and escaping with the stolen knowledge of the school.

Shamed by the actions of her classmates and friends, the school's finest pupil set out to recapture them. Her name was Cynthia Heart. Her rival may have possessed superior skill in magic and charisma, but Cynthia's will was strong and her mind was sharp. She would not rest until her classmates were brought to justice.

I had some productive conversations with about his character Cynthia, my character Phantom and classic fantasy more broadly. We eventually concluded that there was a great deal of fun to be had in exploring the actions of our characters in another setting. Phantom (renamed Fantom  - get it? Fantasy, Phantom, Fantom? I'm so clever.) and Cynthia take their place as rivals in a world inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, 90s anime, and other classic fantasy tropes. 

The conceit was that, like a classic fable or roguelike RPG, failure is quick, common, and sometimes permanent but not critical in the overall story. In one 'tale,' Fantom will capture Cynthia and have her hooded up as a living magical battery. In another, Cynthia and Fantom both get hauled off by the authorities and forever locked up as living examples of lawbreakers. In yet another, Cynthia defeats Fantom and has her sealed up in an oubliette within an old temple, left to squirm and moan. However, they always appear in a sequel or re-telling.

Fantom has a few different proficiencies , but prefers to work alone (contrary to her modern / superhero version which relies on a company)  to achieve her goals. Versed in magic and physical combat, Fantom spends more time bursting into the chambers of some unwitting prince or princess than grinning in a boardroom. Eventually, she hopes to conquer a demesne from within, controlling the king or queen through magical enthrallment and sensual dominion. 



You can read one tale featuring the two right here:  FantomDark clouds always perpetuated the hills around the manor-house. It was old; the spiteful locals often claimed that it was older than the forest. Rarely was this claim given much credit; it was simply a slight against the edifice and its inhabitant. Old-fashioned, they would call it; dangerously so. Villagers rarely described it without using the phrase 'gloomy' or deriding its inhabitant.
The sole owner of this aged object was the real cause of the scorn. Malignant old manors were well and good so long as they were uninhabited, or at least so long as they contained families too old or decadent to bother them much. But every villager spoke of the manor-house, its haunting inhabitant, and the frustrations she visited upon them. She had simply moved in one day, flashing paperwork - no doubt forged - and brandishing weapons. A few armored warriors accompanied her, as well - black iron suits of armor. The most superstitious of villagers called her a witch; he claimed that there were no men and look forward to more in the future!
