In the morning, Adam was woken up by Simone getting out of bed. She asked him where his keys were, so she could drive to the bathrooms. "Uhh, they're in my pants pocket," he said drowsily, flinging an arm out from his warm sleeping bag and pointing vaguely in that direction. She fished in his pockets for the keys, unzipped the tent, and stepped out before zipping it back up. A few seconds later, he heard the Range Rover start up and crunch away down the road, and he fell back to sleep for a few more minutes.
After a time, he woke up to the sound of the car returning, and started actually getting up. It was cold outside the sleeping bag, so he threw on a sweatshirt before stepping out of the tent. Simone looked up at him from the picnic table, where she'd gotten out the camp stove and was setting it up. "Can you get the coffee stuff out of the car?" she asked. Adam grunted in the affirmative, still not fully awake. He'd been lying in bed with his mind racing for much of the night, making him wonder how much sleep he'd actually gotten. It didn't feel like much.
Stumbling to the car, he fetched the coffee grounds, the stove-top percolator, and the filters, and placed them on the table next to Simone. She seemed well-rested, at least. All Adam wanted to do was crawl back into bed. I bet the sleeping bag is still warm, he thought, but he was already up. Instead, he wandered out into the trees a bit, and took a leak on one of the trunks. Then he came back and sat down in his folding camp chair, still at its same spot in front of the fire pit from last night. Only now there was no fire, and the absence made his bare legs feel chillier than they already were.
He stared dully at the empty pit for a while, hearing Simone clinking things on the stove behind him, and then walking over to the car to get more stuff. The cups, he realized, as he glanced over and saw her carrying them back. He mumbled an apology for forgetting those, but she smiled and told him not to worry about it. Adam returned to his quiet contemplation while he waited for the coffee to be ready. His thoughts were slow. He wondered idly if the coals were still active underneath the ashes of the fire pit. He'd dumped a lot of water on them, but there might still be some lingering heat that would help a fire get started. He didn't feel like getting up to fetch the logs, though.
Eventually, Adam heard some more clinking and pouring, and then Simone walked up behind him and handed him one of the metal coffee cups they'd brought for camping. "Thanks, babe," he murmured, then went to take a sip. He immediately jerked his head back as he burned his lip - he'd forgotten that the water for camp coffee was boiled first.
"Careful - it's hot," Simone said as she stepped over to her chair. He wished she'd mentioned that earlier as he ran his tongue over his burned upper lip, but he didn't say anything.
As she sat down, Simone held her coffee cup in front herself delicately with both hands, and blew across the top of it to cool it down. Her eyes met his, and she gave him a bright "Good morning!" in between breaths. It lifted his spirits and gave him energy, to see that attitude from her. It contrasted from the distant, sometimes cold demeanor that she'd had towards him for the past few months. She'd still been a wonderful partner and roommate, but their interactions had been strictly business. The personal connection they shared always seemed muted, when she was feeling confined. Now, there was no resentment hiding underneath the polite mask she presented to the world.
Adam smiled, and wished her good morning back, but when he lifted the mug to his face, he felt himself scowl behind it. I shouldn't have made her wait so long, Adam thought, as he went to take a sip, then remembered at the last second how hot the liquid was. Instead he took the mug away again and started to blow on it, careful to keep his face stoic. He continued to admonish himself for doing this to his girlfriend, for keeping this part of her suppressed for such extensive periods. He'd thought it was for her own good. But how good could it be for her to walk through life feeling like a caged animal? If only there was a way for her to be totally, completely free. He looked over at her again, and saw her shiver slightly and tuck her elbows against her body, trying to get warm. "Want me to start a fire?" he asked. "I bet there's still some coals under there that we can use."
Simone looked at him and shook her head. "I'm fine," she said, though her posture clearly indicated that she was chilly. "Aren't we going hiking today? I figured it'd be best to get an early start."
"Right," Adam said, having forgotten about that being the plan. Part of him wished for a little more downtime before getting going, but she was right - one thing he knew when it came to hiking, was that the earlier you started, the better. "What do we do about breakfast?" he asked her, cautiously going for a sip. The coffee was still too hot, but not enough to scald. He took a small sip, feeling a twinge of pain as it passed across the spot where he'd burned his lip.
"They have a breakfast buffet down at the main lodge, remember?" Simone said. Adam nodded in understanding. That had been another perk about this campground - they served a basic breakfast down at the same building that had the camp store, office, and showers.
"In that case," he said, "all we have to do is pack our hiking stuff." Feeling fully awake now, Adam stood up and walked over to place his coffee cup on the picnic table, then went to the car to get their backpacks. He started packing his while the coffee continued to cool, and Simone soon stood up and joined him. They grabbed their water bottles, some granola bars, sunscreen, and bug spray, chatting over their coffee while they worked together to make sure they didn't forget anything.
Adam thought they were all set, but Simone walked to the tent and came back with a bath towel, which she rolled up tightly and stuffed into Adam's bag. "Always a good idea to have a towel," she said. To him, it seemed like a bulky item they wouldn't need, but he didn't question it. Then, she went to the car and fished out a pack of the body wipes that they'd brought. He raised a questioning eyebrow as she put them in her bag. "In case we get dirty. You know, while we're hiking," she said nonchalantly. He pursed his lips as she walked past him to the tent. She wouldn't try to have sex while they were hiking, would she? Doing it on the trail would pose too high of a risk - the Catskills were a popular hiking destination, particularly at this time of year.
He followed after her into the tent, to get dressed. She'd already taken her shirt off, and his eyes widened briefly at seeing her naked chest, as she crouched to dig in her duffel bag for the right clothes. He avoided staring, but as he stripped out of his pajamas and started digging into his own bag, part of him was marveling at how casual they could be right now. They were spending time around each other naked, but there was no temptation, no urgency to touch each other, no danger.
He wished it could be like this all the time. But during the long months between them getting intimate, Adam always felt obligated to hide his body from Simone, and avoid looking at hers.
We're just like a normal couple, about to go hiking, he thought, smiling as he pulled on his underwear and started putting on his socks. He glanced over at Simone, who was adjusting a black sports bra on her chest. She happened to catch his eyes at the same time he did hers, and she smiled mischievously. He looked away quickly, feeling his face flush with embarrassment. He hadn't intended to look at her chest, but she must have thought he was staring.
They quickly finished getting dressed - Adam in cargo shorts and a tight blue cotton t-shirt, Simone in black yoga pants, and a brown tank-top with a white camisole underneath. The coffee was still warm, so they both sipped their cups while they walked around and buttoned up the campsite, preparing to be gone all day. After confirming everything valuable was in the car, Adam gulped down the rest of his coffee and rinsed his cup out, then the couple got into the Range Rover and rumbled off down the road towards the main lodge.
As they drove down the road, Adam saw that several campsites were already active, with smoke drifting from their fires and people walking around. A few looked up as they passed, and two of them waved. Adam wondered if any of them had heard them yesterday. They were nearly a mile away from the closest campsite to them - the spot he'd chosen was specifically for large parties, which the campground had placed at the very far end of their property, so the big groups didn't make noise that would disturb other campers.
Parking at the main building, they got out, and followed their noses to the smells of the breakfast bar in the corner. A few flimsy wooden tables were set up nearby, and there was a small line of people shuffling through the buffet. A sign on the wall proclaimed that the bar closed at 8 AM. Adam took out his phone and checked the time. It was only a little after 7.
At the bar, he was disappointed to see the offerings, which didn't look particularly appetizing. It was a basic continental breakfast, with some bland overcooked scrambled eggs, bacon that was all either undercooked or overcooked, and some sausage links. Neither he nor Simone turned down the complimentary food, but as he sat down and shoveled eggs into his mouth, he was doing it more because he knew he'd need energy for hiking, than because they tasted good. At least the sausage wasn't bad. The coffee they offered was burnt, making him glad they'd already had some earlier. Instead he got up and poured them both a glass of OJ from the pitcher that was sitting on the counter. It was room temperature, but it helped wash down the dry eggs.
After they finished breakfast, they made their way to the front desk, which was also the register for the camp store. The woman who had checked him in yesterday was behind the counter. She greeted them warmly, and they returned the greeting - Adam hadn't yet gotten a chance, so he apologized for the way he'd just grabbed the papers from her and ran out the door the day before. She said it was no problem, and introduced herself as Kim. She was a robust woman in her 60s, and when he asked her for suggestions for hiking trails, she seemed quite knowledgeable about the area. She spread out maps of nearby trails, suggesting two popular routes that weren't too far from the campground. "Which one has the best views, do you think?"
"Well," said Kim, "during the fall, I'd say this one," she said, pointing at a spot on the map. "You get good views of the whole valley and can see all the leaves changing. But this one goes a little higher up," she said, indicating the other, "so you'd get a better view on a day like today."
They ended up deciding to hike the second one. Adam said it was because he wanted the best view, but in truth he was hoping for a challenging hike, to tire them both out. The less energy they had when they got back to camp, the easier it would be to keep their libidos in check. They prepared to head out, but right as Adam got into the car, Simone suddenly declared that she had forgotten something inside.
Adam started the car and pulled up to the steps leading to the camp store, and he could see that she was at the counter, talking to Kim. It took a few minutes, and he noticed Kim indicating something on the counter again, then handing a piece of paper to Simone, who waved at her before rejoining him.
"What was that about?" he asked as they drove away.
"Just got a map from Kim," Simone replied casually, tucking the folded paper into her backpack.
After about a 20-minute drive down winding backroads, they reached the trailhead. There was only one other car there already, so they were easily able to pull into a parking spot. They got out of the car and set about preparing themselves for the trek - topping off their water bottles, applying sunscreen, spraying bug spray on their shirts. Finally, Adam locked the car, and they started off down the trail.
It was a beautiful, dry, late spring day, and they easily settled into a good pace on the trail. Both were athletic and had decent trail shoes, and the trail was clearly marked. It was a pleasant walk, with the couple exchanging light banter, and pointing out particularly interesting bits of nature that they encountered.
At one point they came across a line in the woods that had clearly seen a forest fire some time ago - row after row of blackened tree trunks extended out of sight in that patch, but the damage completely stopped along the trail, thanks to the break in the trees it provided. The fire must have been years ago - healthy saplings were already growing all along the forest floor beneath the scorched trunks. While they took a brief break to survey the scene and take a drink of water, Simone took out the map she'd gotten from Kim. They started moving again, but Simone kept her map out, glancing at it while they walked.
After a time, they paused again when they reached a dry stream bed, lined with small round rocks. A sign fastened to a tree trunk pointed towards the summit, which was 2.5 km away. Between the tree and the stream was an old, rusty wheelbarrow that was half buried in the dirt, and covered in leaves. After taking a swig of water, Simone started walking again. But to Adam's surprise, she left the main trail, turning right to walk along the riverbed, instead. "This way," she called over her shoulder, walking quickly.
His expression befuddled, Adam capped his own water bottle before jogging to catch up with her. "Where are you going?" he called to her as he got close.
"It's a secret path to the lookout spot," Simone said, holding up the map. Adam saw a part that was highlighted, but only got a glimpse as she kept moving. "Kim showed it to me. It's an old trail that nobody uses anymore." She kept a quick pace heading up the stream bed, and Adam was forced to take long strides to keep up.
"What brought this on?" he asked from behind her.
"I don't know - when I asked Kim for a map, she told me about this shortcut up the mountain. Apparently her and her husband used to take it, so she knows it really well."
Adam frowned, unsure why Kim had told Simone about it and not him. After walking a little further, he brought up his question to Simone.
"Oh. Well, I think it was because there were other people nearby when she was talking to us both. She kinda seemed like she wanted to keep this path a secret," Simone said. After a while, the stream bed came to a place where it wrapped around a massive boulder covered in moss. A tree grew out of a split in the boulder.
Simone took out her map and looked at it again, then left the stream bed and circled around the boulder, swiveling her head back and forth as if searching. "She said somewhere around here was - ah!" she exclaimed, pointing. There was a narrow path that wound around the boulder and turned up into a steep incline through the trees.
"Are you sure?" Adam asked as he glanced behind them at the stream bed. There were no trail markers that he could see; this path looked hardly bigger than a game trail. Still, Simone was walking with purpose, so he hurried after her. "Babe, why go this way? What if we get lost?"
Simone just confidently strode onward, up the slope. "Relax. It'll be fine" she said, the exertion of their climb requiring her to huff and puff between sentences. "Where's your sense of adventure, Boy Scout?" she asked, grinning over her shoulder at him.
Adam scrunched his face in mock offense. He supposed it didn't really matter to him, how they made it to the summit. The trail was unmarked, but he was pretty sure they were following one. The gap between the trees was easy to discern, once you were on it. Well, at least she's having a good time, he thought, glad that she decided to take interest in the hike. The goal was to have a good vacation, after all, and the more enjoyment she got out of activities other than fucking, the better he would feel about this trip.
In their daily life, they did many things together, but, it seemed to Adam, Simone hadn't been enjoying their time together. It wasn't that she avoided him. It just often felt like she hung out with him because there was nothing else to do. She never had any suggestions for what they should watch on TV, or for dinner. She was perfectly pleasant, but still, she seemed distant. Her eyes always looked dull, their usual emerald green almost seeming to fade to a darker jade color, these last few months.
It's just your imagination, he thought. Her eyes looked dull because it was winter, and you only ever saw her at nighttime, after work. But, when she'd glanced over her shoulder just now. Maybe it was the angle of the sunlight through the trees, but they seemed to flash a brilliant emerald again. She just looked so... alive. It was intoxicating to be around her.
"Well," Adam said from behind her, making his voice surly. "This Boy Scout did bring a compass, in case you need it." He was breathing hard between sentences now, too.
"See? That's what I love about you, Adam," she said, still huffing with effort. "You're always prepared for anything."
Adam could help but briefly beam like a fool at the compliment, glad that she wasn't looking when he did. He worked his backpack around to hold it in front of him as he walked, and kept moving while he dug inside it to grab the compass out of the side pocket. He used it to get their current bearing while he walked, noting that they had been walking North as they ascended the slope. He looked at the trees around him, but they were all too tall for him to see far in any direction. Trying to figure out where he was made him itch to see the map Simone was holding, so he could sync it up with the compass, and make better sense of their position.
He looked up and saw that Simone had advanced a good distance in front of him. She didn't even look behind to make sure I was following! he thought indignantly, as he hustled up to catch her.
"Damn, honey," he said, out of breath when he reached her. "You're really setting a strong pace."
"Yeah," she breathed. "It's such a nice day for a hike, and this is good exercise."
"Hey," Adam breathed behind her. "Can I see that map?"
"Sure," she said, "As soon as we get to the top of this hill, we'll take a break."
They were winding around the top of a large berm that angled up to the left of them. The trail made a switchback to climb the steep slope, and as they reached the top of it, Adam could see the sunlight getting brighter. There was gap through the trees, ahead. When his head crested the top of the hill, he realized that they'd come to a large clearing. It was a wide, flat outcrop of bare rocks surrounded on all sides by tall trees.
Adam blinked as he looked around. Seeing the size of the outcrop, his dirty mind immediately thought of Simone's breasts. The clearing was massive, much bigger than their camp site, and completely bare of vegetation, except for a few scattered clumps of grass. There would be plenty of space here for Simone to reach her full size, if she wanted. He couldn't have picked a better spot if he'd tried. It's almost as if she planned it, he thought.
"Here you go," said Simone nonchalantly, holding out the map to her side as he walked up beside her. Adam squinted at her suspiciously as she handed him the piece of paper, but she wasn't looking at him. She uncapped her water bottle and began to drink, silently surveying the outcrop in front of them. Adam's suspicions were confirmed when he looked at the map, and saw that the trail that he'd seen highlighted led directly from the main trail to this clearing. It wasn't a shortcut to the summit, and the main trail was completely on the other side of the mountain. This had been a setup. She'd intentionally led him to this spot.
Adam closed his eyes as he took a deep breath, still sucking wind from their steep climb. He felt the sweat on his skin, now, and the sun had gotten hotter as it reached mid morning. He put his backpack down and took out his own water bottle, taking a deep gulp. It was pleasantly cool and refreshing. Neither he nor Simone said anything, as they caught their breath.
Idiot, he thought, cursing himself for being duped by her enthusiasm. He'd really thought Simone had taken a genuine interest in hiking. If he'd known this was her plan, he would've stuck to the main trail. I should've known there would be only one thing on her mind, this week. Was she really so desperate to grow, that she'd made that the goal for today? After already getting so big, yesterday? He realized he'd been overly optimistic, to think they could just have sex once, and then spend the rest of the week doing "normal couple" things. But he'd still hoped to limit her swelling. Did she plan to grow every day this week?
It's not like I HAVE to fuck her right now, he thought stubbornly. The exercise he'd just gotten helped to keep his mind clear, and keep blood flow away from his dick. Even if she lets her tits out, I don't have to participate. She can grow to full size if she wants, but I won't help her get bigger. He took another swig of water, and set his jaw, determined. She couldn't just trick him like this, and expect him to play along.
To be continued...
