Chapter 27 – Rescuing Josie

A couple of months later, Jazmyn and her kids were at her parents’ house as she visited with them and Alejandra.  Jazmyn’s phone rang, and since she ran the amputee charity, she was used to getting important calls from unfamiliar numbers, and so she answered.  On the other end was a distraught man speaking mostly Spanish along with some broken English.  She would have assumed he had the wrong number, but he had said her name (using the Spanish pronunciation ‘has-MEEN’) a few times.

Knowing that Alejandra was fluent in Spanish, she handed her the phone and asked her to translate.  Alejandra listened for a good couple of minutes.  She said something in Spanish, and then asked Jazmyn, “Does Valeria have a friend named Josefina?”  Jazmyn nodded affirmatively.  “It seems that Josefina’s parents were arrested at their workplace during a raid by immigration agents.  The man on the phone is Josefina’s uncle.  He’s beside himself because he’s the only other relative she has here and he’s in no position to care for a little girl.  He’s very much afraid he’ll be arrested next and there will be no one for Josefina.”

“Tell him to gather Josie’s things together and bring her to my place.  We’ll be happy to keep her until this is resolved.  Valeria will be thrilled to have her sleep over.  I’ll head back over there now.  I’ll be there in, say 20 minutes.”

“Hold on, Jaz.  Josefina’s in school right now.”  Alejandra spoke some more to Josie’s uncle and then hung up.  “He’s very afraid.  He’s Josefina’s emergency contact, so he’s the only one who can pick her up from school.  He doesn’t want to interrupt her day and pull her out right away, so he’s going to lay low until it’s time to pick her up.  He wants you to meet him at her school in case he’s arrested there.  He doesn’t want to chance going home to get her things until after he’s handed her off to you.  Actually, he’ll probably just give you the key and have you get her stuff.”

“I’m going to need you to come with me and translate, Allie,” Jazmyn said to her sister-in-law.

“That’s fine, if we can get your moms to watch our kids.  Valeria should come with us, though, for Josefina’s sake,” replied Alejandra, or Allie as Jazmyn’s family had come to call her.

“I’m sure they will, especially since this is kind of an emergency.  And yes, Valeria should absolutely come along.”

Jazmyn thought for a second and said, “We’re going to need the uncle to come into the school office and explain that Josie’s parents have been arrested and he can’t care for her.  Hopefully he can get us added as additional emergency contacts so we can pick her up from school tomorrow.”

“Good plan,” Allie agreed.  “I’ll tell him.”  Allie either didn’t notice or didn’t mind that Jazmyn had included her when she said ‘we’ and ‘us’.

“Have him come to the school, say, an hour early so we can get this worked out before Josie is dismissed,” Jazmyn suggested.  “Better yet, let’s meet him somewhere Immigration wouldn’t be looking for him, and we’ll take him to school with us.”

The two women, along with Valeria, met the uncle in a shopping center parking lot.  His name was José, and he was very rattled.  He spoke a mile a minute to Alejandra on the way to the school.  As they neared the school, she filled Jazmyn in.  “He and Josefina’s parents are from Honduras and are undocumented.  All three of them work at a chicken processing plant outside of town.  The place was raided today, but he managed to escape.  Josefina’s parents are facing deportation, and so is he if they catch him.  Josefina was born here, so she can’t be deported.  He says her parents very much want her to stay here; he said she’d have no future in Honduras.  But they don’t want her to go into the ‘system’ and get randomly assigned foster parents; they want her to be with someone they trust.  You were the only person they ever mentioned who they thought might be willing.”

At the school, Jazmyn said, “Let me go in first, since I’m Anglo, and I’ll make sure the coast is clear.  I’ll call you either way.”  The others thought that was a brilliant idea.  She went in along with Valeria and spoke for several minutes to the principal, quickly explaining the situation.  The principal assured here there were no immigration agents lurking around and seemed concerned for Josie’s sake and willing to help in any way she could.  Jazmyn called Allie and told her to come in with José.

The principal said that ordinarily an emergency contact couldn’t add additional emergency contacts, but in the light of the circumstances, she’d allow it this time, on the condition that Josie reacted positively to Jazmyn.  She called Josie’s teacher and asked her to have Josie come to the office.

Josie entered the principal’s office and her face lit up.  “¡Tio José!  Valeria!  What are you doing at my school?” Josie said excitedly.  Allie saw that Josie was also missing her legs and in a wheelchair.  No one had bothered to mention that.  Now she understood when the uncle said she’d have no future in Honduras.

The principal asked the little kindergartener, “Josie, do you know the lady in the wheelchair?”

“Of course!” she said as she and Valeria hugged.  “That’s Valeria’s mom!”

The principal had more questions for her.  “Have you stayed at Valeria’s house before?”  Josie said she had.  “Did her mom take good care of you?  Did you feel safe there?”  Would you like to stay with them again?”  Josie replied positively to each question.

The principal squatted down directly in front of Josie and looked her in the eye.  “Josie, I want you to listen carefully.  Your mom and dad can’t pick you up today.  Your uncle can’t watch you, either.  Valeria’s mom, Mrs. Alvarez, is going to take you back to her home and you can have a sleepover with Valeria tonight.  She’ll take you to your home first, so you can get your pajamas and some clothes for tomorrow.  Mrs. Alvarez will bring you to school in the morning.  Is that okay?”

Josie nodded slowly, now wondering about her parents.  “Where are my mamá and papá?” she asked with concern.  The principal looked like she didn’t know what to say.

José spoke up and said something to her in Spanish.  Josie nodded her head but still looked very concerned.  Allie translated.  “He told her her parents are safe, and they wanted to come get her, but they couldn’t.  I think she’s reading between the lines,” Allie said.

Allie said to the principal, “Uncle José wants to add both of us as emergency contacts for Josie.  I’m Valeria’s Aunt Allie.  I’m married to Jazmyn’s brother.”  “That’s fine,” said the principal.  Thank you for coming along and translating.  It’s been a big help.”

The principal then said to Jazmyn, “Just so you know, I’m required by law to notify Child Protective Services of this situation.  This is completely routine and nothing to worry about.  They’ll be at your door, if not later today, certainly by tomorrow.  They’ll screen you and your husband and, assuming there are no issues, they’ll appoint you as emergency foster parents.  They’ll ask a lot of intrusive personal questions, and want to see your home, but it’s all to assure the well-being of the child.  The more readily you cooperate with them, the better your chances.”

“We’ll do whatever we have to do for Josie,” Jazmyn assured her, as Allie translated for José.  Then they all left together.  They stopped at a hardware store where José had an extra key made for their apartment to give to Jazmyn.  He didn’t want to return there in case Immigration was waiting for him.  While he was doing that, the principal called Jazmyn.  She told her that Immigration had just left the school; they were looking for Uncle José.  She told them that he had picked up his niece, but he didn’t say where he was going after that.  She said she made a point of telling them that Josie was a U.S. citizen and showed them a scanned copy of her birth certificate that she had on file.

When José and Allie returned to the car, Jazmyn brought Allie up to date and she again translated.  Allie asked José if he knew where Josie’s parents kept their important papers.  She realized having an official copy of Josie’s birth certificate might be crucial to protect the girl.  She knew to keep a copy of her own Texas birth certificate on her at all times, in order to avoid being arrested on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant.  José was pretty sure where to look and told Allie.  They then dropped him off at his car and wished him luck.

The two women and two girls arrived at Josie’s apartment, unlocked the door with the new key, and went inside.  Jazmyn helped Josie pack, and Allie searched for the girl’s birth certificate.  “Found it!” Allie called out.  Jazmyn had Josie bring all of her clothes, her toothbrush, as well as some favorite toys.  She expected Josie would be staying with them for some time, and the girl didn’t have much anyway.  The four then drove back to Jazmyn’s parents’ house so she could drop off Allie and pick up her twin boys, and then Jazmyn returned to her own home along with the four children.

Jazmyn had given a quick update to Victor that Josie would be staying with them for a while, which he didn’t have a problem with, but otherwise he didn’t know what was going on.  When he arrived home, a black SUV pulled into the driveway behind him, and two men got out.  “Excuse me, sir, are you José Perez?” one of them asked.

“No, you have the wrong guy,” Victor replied.

The man pulled out a badge and said, “Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  May I see some ID please?” while the other man moved his right hand to where he apparently had a gun hidden.

As he reached for his wallet to pull out his driver’s license, Victor said, “My name is Victor Alvarez, and I’m a U.S. citizen.  I was born in New York and I’m a Marine Corps veteran.”  He handed him the license.  “What’s this all about, anyway?”

“Are you an associate of José Perez?” the man asked.

“I never heard of him,” Victor responded.

“Don’t give us that crap,” replied the man.  “A woman was seen entering this house with his niece not long ago.  We think he may be trying to retrieve the girl.  So, did he send you in his place?”

They’d apparently followed Jazmyn home.  Victor was angry now.  “Look at my damned driver’s license, will you?  I live here!  This is my house!  That woman was probably my wife, and she told me we’d be watching a little girl for a while.  The girl’s last name is Pérez.  I know her parents but I’ve never heard of the uncle.  Is he considered dangerous?”

“We have the girl’s parents in custody.  The uncle is on the run.  All three of them are undocumented aliens.  We don’t know if he’s dangerous or not.  We’d like to question your wife.  She may know of his whereabouts.  May we come inside?”

“No.  Wait here, and I’ll get her,” Victor said.

Victor went inside and said to Jazmyn, “There are federal agents in our driveway who want to talk to you about Josie’s uncle.  I’ll watch the kids while you go outside and talk to them.”  Jazmyn looked concerned, but said nothing.  She hopped up into her wheelchair and wheeled outside.

“Mrs. Alvarez?” one of the men asked her.

“Yes?” she answered.

“We’re from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  We’re looking for a man named José Perez, the uncle of the little girl in your custody.  Have you seen him today?”

“Yes,” she replied.  “He called me and asked if I could watch his niece for him.  We met and I brought her home with me.”

“Do you know where he is, or where he might be headed?” the man asked.

“No clue.  He didn’t say and I didn’t ask.”

“Did you see the vehicle he was driving?”

“It was an older, silver-colored sedan.  That’s all I can tell you.”

“Did he say when he might be back for the girl?”

“No.  I don’t think he was planning to come back for her.”

“Didn’t you find that strange?”

“Not under the circumstances, no.”

“What circumstances were those?”

“That you’ve arrested the girl’s parents and are trying to arrest him, too.”

“Did you assist him in any way?  Give him money, for example?  Tell him where he could hide?”

“No.  All I did was take the girl off his hands; nothing more.  He gave me a key to their apartment, and I went and brought back some of the girl’s things.  Clothes and toys.”

“Okay, thank you for your time, ma’am.  Here’s my card.  If you hear from him again, please call me right away.”

Jazmyn wheeled back inside, clearly agitated.  She went straight to the trash can in the kitchen, tore up the agent’s business card, and threw the pieces away.  “You want to bring me up to speed, babe?” Victor asked her.  She filled him in on the events of the day and the conversation she’d just had with the immigration agents.

“It makes me so mad that they’re going after people like Josie’s parents and uncle!” Jazmyn said.  “They’re not criminals.  They’re not dangerous.  They just came here to make a better life for themselves.  They contribute to our society.  And now their family is being torn apart.”  Jazmyn started crying.  “Josie is innocent in all of this, but she may never see her parents or uncle again!”  Jazmyn covered her mouth with her hand.  She was too choked up to get another word out.  Victor squatted down and hugged her tightly.  He knew there was nothing he could say that would make the situation or Jazmyn’s mood any better.

Chapter 28 – Consoling Josie

It actually took over 48 hours for Child Protective Services to show up.  The caseworker explained that they were slammed with new cases due to the immigration raid on the chicken processing plant a few days earlier.  The caseworker was quite pleased to find a legless client in a home with another legless child and a legless foster mom.

Jazmyn mentioned that she had met Josie and her parents through the charity for amputees and parents of children with missing limbs that she and her husband had founded and which she ran.  That earned them lots of brownie points.  Even though some of the questions were quite personal, the interviews and home inspection went very smoothly, and Jazmyn and Victor were approved as foster parents in very short order.

In only a matter of days, the immigration agents caught up with Uncle José, arrested him, and put him in the same detention center with Josie’s parents.  He was able to update them that he had managed to get Josie from school and into the care of Jazmyn Alvarez and her Spanish-speaking sister-in-law Alejandra.  Both of the parents were unable to contain their emotions as they fell to their knees and thanked God that their daughter was safe and in the care of a trusted friend.  They’d both been sick with worry and had barely slept out of concern for their little Josefina.

It used to be that the immigration authorities would not aggressively seek out undocumented immigrants who weren’t causing problems, had put down roots in the community, and had U.S. born children.  But as the United States had become increasingly conservative and intolerant in recent years, those days were over.  Now, the various federal agencies and courts involved with the capture and deportation of so-called illegals had been fully funded and staffed to handle the increased workload.  Every undocumented person had a target on their back, and could be assured of swift and severe ‘justice’ for daring to be in the U.S. without proper credentials.

It was only going to be a matter of a few weeks before all three of Josie’s relatives would be sent back to their home country, as penniless as when they arrived.  They were free to either take Josie with them or leave her behind in someone’s care, but they all knew she faced a bleak future in Honduras.  There, as in most third-world countries, disabled people are thought to bring shame upon their families, are openly discriminated against, and are kept out of sight.  She’d never be able to work, find a husband, or even leave the house.  And that was on top of the pervasive extreme poverty and wanton violence that nearly all Hondurans had to contend with.  As much as it killed them to be apart from her, they knew that for her sake, they had no choice but to leave her behind.

Jazmyn, Victor, and Alejandra visited Josie’s parents in the detention center, without Josie, to confirm that they intended to leave her in the U.S. and to find out whether they wanted to say goodbye to their daughter before they were sent home.  The parents were adamant that Josie had to stay in the U.S., with tears streaming down their cheeks as they said it.  Those were the hardest words they’d ever said in their lives.

As far as them saying goodbye to Josie in person, they all debated the pros and cons of doing that.  Ultimately they agreed that as difficult as it would be, not doing it would be even worse for everyone involved.  Josie’s parents also asked the others to wrap up some loose ends for them, asking them to retrieve their other important documents, valuables, and cash that hopefully were still in their apartment, and providing information they’d need, such as the names of Josie’s pediatrician and dentist.

The three came back a week later with Josie.  Beforehand, they sat down with her and tried to prepare her for what was coming.  They told her they were taking her to see her parents, which caused her to smile broadly and bounce up and down, but they explained that while it would be a happy time, it would also be a very sad time with lots of tears.  She’d be saying goodbye to them and wouldn’t see them again for a very long time, maybe many years, maybe even forever.

They explained to her that her parents and uncle had to go back to Honduras to stay, but it was a bad place, especially for a little girl with no legs.  They were going to leave her behind because they loved her too much to take her to such a place.  Staying here, she’d miss them terribly, but she’d be safe and much happier, and she’d still be surrounded by people who loved her.  Just hearing this was overwhelming for a five year old, and she began sobbing uncontrollably.  Jazmyn hugged her tightly and both she and Allie could barely keep from joining her as tears ran down both of their faces.

At the detention center, Josie had a look of dread on her face.  She clearly understood the nature of the visit.  But when she spotted her parents, she momentarily forgot all that as her face lit up and she wheeled herself toward them as fast as her little arms would move her.  “¡Mamá!  ¡Papá!” she squealed with joy.  Her father scooped her up out of the wheelchair and held her in his arms.  All three hugged each other for dear life and just cried their eyes out, all knowing the significance of their reunion.  After about ten minutes of this, they calmed down enough to speak.

Josie’s parents said to her in Spanish, “Pepita, this is the hardest thing we’ve ever done in our lives, having to say goodbye to you like this.  We love you so very much; we can’t imagine having to live without seeing your bright smile every day.  We don’t want to leave you, but we can’t stay in America any more, and it’s not safe for you to come back to Honduras with us.  Trust us; you’ll have a much happier life here, even without us.”

“Why can’t you stay in America anymore?” Josie asked through tears.

“We snuck in here a long time ago, before you were born, and we weren’t allowed to.  It was against the rules.  We got caught and so they’re kicking us out.”

“How come they’re not kicking me out, too?” the little girl asked, trying to understand.

“Because you were born here.  You’re not from Honduras; you’re an American, so they can’t make you leave.  You’re very lucky to be from here, because this is the best place in the entire world.

“We know how hard it’s going to be for you, too, but we want you to be as brave as you can.  We know Jazmyn loves you very much and will take very good care of you.  We want you to listen to her and obey her and be a very good girl for her.  And for Victor and Alejandra, too.  Say your prayers every night.  Be sure to thank God for Jazmyn and Victor and Alejandra, and pray for us; we’ll be praying for you.

“Do your very best in school so you can get a good job when you grow up.  Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something because you have no legs.  You find a way to do it.  That’s what Jazmyn does, and that’s what she’s teaching Valeria to do.  She’ll teach you, too.  We know you’ll make us proud of you, Pepita!

“Maybe someday, they’ll let us come back to visit you, or we’ll find another way to see you again.  We’re going to think about how happy that day will be, and try not to think about how sad today is.  We want you to do the same, okay?”  Josie nodded her head yes as she continued to cry.

Meanwhile, Allie was furiously taking notes, trying to write down everything that was being said.  The detention center didn’t allow any cameras or recording devices, so that was going to be the only way Josie would be able to recall the details of this day, other than just from memory.  Allie decided right then that she would personally assume the responsibility of making sure Josie remained fluent in Spanish so she could communicate freely with her parents in the future.

On the way home, Josie was despondent and sobbed uncontrollably, and all three adults were openly crying as well.  This was the saddest thing than any of them had ever experienced or witnessed.

Gradually, Josie became less sad about her parents having to return to Honduras.  She became sad whenever she thought about it, but she was no longer thinking about it constantly.  She loved being a foster sister to Valeria and living with her and her family.  Not having legs seemed completely normal in this family.

In late August, Valeria began kindergarten, and Josie was a first-grader, having transferred to the elementary school nearest the Alvarez family.  Valeria adjusted well to kindergarten and very much appreciated that her older foster sister was also there.  Allie took a special interest in Josie and made a point of seeing her regularly.  Allie always spoke to Josie in Spanish and insisted that Josie only speak to her using Spanish as well.  Because Valeria was often with them when they did that, she was starting to pick up some Spanish as well.  The girls began to realize they could use Spanish with each other at school if they didn’t want everyone else to know what they were saying.  They also did that at home, but it didn’t work as well if Victor was around, and Jazmyn was starting to catch on as well.

Chapter 29 – Reckless

For nearly a year, Jazmyn and Victor had been periodically talking about the crazy idea of him trying to get her to release a large number of fertile eggs on command, just to see if they could do it.  Neither of them seriously thought they could, but they were both intrigued by the possibility.  If it didn’t work, no biggie, it was a fun fantasy, and she’d have a normal pregnancy.  If it did somehow work, she’d become hugely pregnant with a large number of babies, and they’d have to live with the consequences.

They both knew it was irresponsible, foolish, and even reckless to even try this.  That weighed especially heavily on Victor, who, as the Dom, was supposed to always put Jazmyn’s best interests over all else, including either of their personal desires.  But they both desperately wanted to try anyway.  Jazmyn promised she would not hold it against him if they tried it and somehow succeeded; she’d be as much guilty as he was.

So, several months ahead of Kaden and Allie’s triplets’ first birthday, she stopped taking birth control.  Then, each month, when they believed Jazmyn to be at the point of her monthly cycle where her ovaries would normally start maturing a single egg for release, they’d practice.  They’d have a bondage session and work extra hard at getting Jazmyn to feel especially submissive, with plenty of orgasms, of course.  Then Victor would command her to mature and release a certain number of eggs this cycle.  She would then submit to him, and his command, with all of her being, sending her hurtling into subspace.  He’d repeat the command several times while she was in subspace, when she was powerless to resist his commands.

They’d abstained from penetrative sex as soon as she stopped birth control, because these were just practice sessions and they weren’t ready for her to get pregnant yet.  They had no way of knowing whether her ovaries complied with Victor’s commands, but they were hoping that by doing this repeatedly, they’d be trained to obey.

And so, during the month of the triplets’ birthday, when they were ready for her to become pregnant, they repeated the process one last time.  Victor commanded her to mature and release six eggs.  Mama Bryana had never matured and released more than four that they knew of.  The time she had natural quintuplets, two of them were identical, so only four eggs were involved.  Jazmyn hadn’t previously released more than two as far as they knew.  Victor felt like six eggs would more or less prove that they had controlled the number of eggs beyond what could be explained naturally without being dangerous.

When Jazmyn heard Victor say six eggs, she momentarily panicked.  Six eggs!  What was he thinking?  But she suppressed her concerns and focused even more deeply on completely trusting Victor and submitting her entire body to his will, ovaries and all.  Afterwards, she refused to allow herself to worry; she just continued to mentally submit to Victor’s will.  Then, every day when she was even remotely fertile, Victor and Jazmyn had unprotected vaginal sex multiple times a day.

In short order, Jazmyn knew she was pregnant, but with all the sex they’d had during her fertile time, that was almost guaranteed.  The big question was with how many babies.  They wouldn’t know that for some time.  But Jazmyn’s bump started growing much earlier than ever before.  After a couple of weeks, she could no longer wear the chastity belt.  By the one month mark, some of her clothes were too tight in the waist, and by the two month mark, they all were and she was wearing maternity clothing exclusively.

She requested an early ultrasound since she was almost certain she was carrying multiples, possibly high order multiples, and Dr. Parker, the Ob/Gyn, agreed with both her assessment and her request.  Of course, Victor came along for the appointment.  Although usually the doctor isn’t present during the ultrasound and it’s handled by a technician, he was there, just as curious as the parents.

The doctor asked them, “So what are your guesses as to how many babies are in there?” he asked playfully.

Jazmyn and Victor both immediately and confidently said, “Six!” in unison.

The doctor was taken aback by their responses.  “Well, you both seem awfully sure about that, but the chances of that are almost impossible.  Six is a whole lot of babies, and it’s extraordinarily rare to carry that many without fertility drugs or IVF.  One in 4.7 billion pregnancies, if I recall correctly.  There are about 200 million pregnancies worldwide in a year, so on the entire planet, it would typically happen once every 23 years or so.  But let’s see what we have…”

The technician did her thing and the image came up on screen.  Dr. Parker started counting out loud, but he trailed off after saying ‘three’.  He continued counting in his head.  He peered at the screen, and moved the sensors around on Jazmyn’s belly, and peered some more.  “Well, I’ll be damned,” he said quietly, almost to himself, as he continued to look intently at the screen.

He then stood up straight and faced them.  “I count exactly six babies in there.  There might be more if they’re hiding behind the six I can see.  How could you have possibly known that?”

Jazmyn just smiled and said, “We just know, that’s all.  I’m certain there aren’t any hiding either, and there are really six of them.”  Victor indicated his agreement.

The doctor shook his head in disbelief.  “I repeat the question.  How did you know there were six?” he asked, incredulous.

“If we told you, you would think we were either crazy or had superpowers,” Victor replied.

The doctor said, “Right now, I’d probably believe anything you told me.  Try me.  Really.”

Victor shrugged, and said, “All right.  We willed it to happen.  I commanded her ovaries to mature and release six eggs this cycle, and she made them submit to that command.  We did it just to see if it was possible, with little to no expectation that it was.  We were just having fun, but we were also well aware of the implications if it actually happened.”

Jazmyn added, “I’ve had twins and triplets already, and this felt like a lot more than just two or three.  We could only assume that it had to be six like we’d ordered.  But having high-order multiples runs in my family.  I’m a triplet myself, and my mother also had natural quads and natural quints.”

“Was your mother the one who had quints here locally about 25 years ago?” Dr. Parker asked.

“She’s the one!” Jazmyn exclaimed.

He replied, “I remember seeing that on the news.  I was a teenager then, but I was already thinking about becoming a doctor, and so it was quite fascinating to me.  I remember there being some conspiracy theories about your mother because she hid from the press.”

“You have a good memory, doctor,” Jazmyn replied, without elaborating.

“But getting back to how you ended up with six…  You’re saying you just both wished for six, and it somehow happened?” the doctor asked, again shaking his head in disbelief.

Victor replied, “Well, there’s a bit more to it than that, but basically, yes.”

“How did it occur to you to even try?”

“How much time do you have?” the father-to-be asked.

“Doctors never have much time.  How about the short version?”

“Okay,” replied Victor.  “I’d already trained Jazmyn to orgasm on command, but she could only do it if she were already aroused.  In fact, she now can’t stop herself from doing it under those conditions.”  I’ve been working on training her to become aroused on command, but that’s been a bit more difficult.

“We both come from large families and want a large family ourselves, so we both wondered if I could command her to release extra eggs.  We practiced for months ahead of time, but of course had no way to know if it was working or not, because we were careful to avoid sex until we were ready for her to become pregnant.  When we were ready, we realized we’d never know unless we tried it with sex.  I chose a big number so it wouldn’t happen on its own by chance, and here we are.”

“So you can verbally control your wife’s involuntary bodily functions?”

“Some of them, yeah; so it would seem.  But only because she’s cooperated and allowed me to train her.”

“And you’re just normal people, right?  You’re not into the occult or anything supernatural?”

“Nothing like that at all.  We’re both Christians, but we didn’t pray for this.  We just did what I told you.”

“And you didn’t obtain fertility drugs from somewhere that I don’t know about?”

“No fertility drugs.”

Dr. Parker shook his head again.  “The human body and brain never cease to amaze me with what they’re capable of,” he said.

“Okay, now back to business,” said the doctor.  “Jazmyn, you now automatically have a high-risk pregnancy.  I want to see you once every two weeks without fail, and it’ll be more frequent than that as we go along.  You need to start increasing your calorie intake, and I mean by a lot.  Lots of healthy foods, such as protein and veggies, but not exclusively.  You also need carbs and fat.”  He went down a whole laundry list of orders and things to watch for.

On the way home, the couple were giddy with excitement.  “Haha!  We did it!” Victor exclaimed.

“I know, right?  Is there anything we can’t do if we put our minds to it?” Jazmyn asked rhetorically.

“I’m thinking NO!” Victor shouted in reply.

“You know this is going to get real in a hurry, don’t you?” Jazmyn asked him, suddenly turning serious.

“Yes, I know,” Victor replied equally seriously, “and we’ll have no one to blame but ourselves.  But until that day comes…”  Victor broke into a big smile and became animated again.  “…I say we celebrate!”
