Chapter 20 – Tornado
Fast forward to the following June. Jazmyn and Victor were now happy newlyweds. They’d decided to start a family right away, and Jazmyn went off of birth control shortly before her wedding day in April. Her period was now about two weeks late and she was pretty sure she was pregnant. She hadn’t mentioned it to Victor yet. She wanted to take a home pregnancy test first, and if it read positive, she’d share the good news with him and then make an appointment with her ob/gyn to find out for sure.
The weather had been unsettled for a week now. They’d been under a tornado watch every day for the past several days, and had had plenty of rain and thunderstorms. A tornado watch means conditions are right for a tornado to form, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that one has or will. So, people just went about their business, keeping a wary eye on the sky.
Jazmyn had been putting off buying the pregnancy test due to the bad weather, but had become impatient not knowing. So one afternoon after she got off work, she stopped at a pharmacy to buy one. It started raining heavily just as she got in the door of the pharmacy, and then a moment later the thunder and lightning began. She found the section where the pregnancy tests were kept and was trying to figure out which one to get. She was in no hurry, because she was hoping the storm would pass by the time she was ready to make her purchase and leave.
Then, without warning, all hell broke loose. In a matter of just a few seconds there was a deafening noise, the power went out, she could see daylight above her, merchandise was flying everywhere, and then she was flat on her back with unbearable pain coming from her legs. Something very heavy had fallen on them and she was pinned to the floor. She was being pelted with rain, hailstones, merchandise, and debris, and she covered her head and face with her arms and hands as best as she could.
A powerful tornado had formed and touched down almost on top of the pharmacy, giving them no warning or any time to get to the storm shelter in the back of the store. After several minutes, the storm subsided and she could hear numerous sirens, both the kind that blare during tornado warnings, as well as those from first responder vehicles racing to the scene. Then she passed out from the pain and trauma.
Jazmyn’s brother Ian, a paramedic, was among the first to arrive at the scene. At first, he and his partner Emily treated people who had managed to stagger out of the store, and then those who were more badly injured who were still inside and calling out for help. Meanwhile, firefighters were checking out the part of the store where the roof had collapsed. They were asking anyone trapped or injured to call out, but heard nothing. They then began methodically searching for victims. Finally, one of them spotted Jazmyn. “I’ve got one here!” he called out. “Adult female, pinned under a roof beam.” He managed to get to her, and determined that she was alive and breathing but unconscious. They summoned the paramedics to check her out. Ian and Emily crawled through the debris with their equipment and got to Jazmyn. Then Ian realized it was her.
“Oh my God, it’s my sister!” he exclaimed. “Jazzie! Jazzie! Can you hear me? Jazzie, it’s Ian!” A couple of firefighters pulled Ian away, and Emily said to him, “I’ve got her, Ian.” He reluctantly let the firefighters usher him away as tears streamed down his cheeks. It was a longstanding policy that paramedics should not treat their family members or close friends if there was anyone else available.
By then, the other injured people at the scene had been or were being attended to, so Ian called Victor. “Victor, this is Ian. A tornado hit the big shopping center on Kennedy Boulevard. Jazzie was in the drug store and she’s injured. She’s unconscious and pinned under a fallen roof beam. You better get down here right away.”
Ian just sat down on the back bumper of his ambulance in a daze with tears continuing to run down his face. He was no good for anything now, but fortunately, he wasn’t needed. A short time later, Victor arrived, found him, and the two men hugged out of concern for Jazmyn. “Do you know anything more?” Victor asked Ian. “Not yet. My partner is treating her now,” he replied. A few minutes later, a firefighter came out from the store to give Ian an update. Ian introduced him to Victor and explained that Victor was Jazmyn’s husband. “She’s stable, and her vitals are good, but she’s unconscious. She’s really pinned under there good, and we’re going to need some heavy equipment to lift the beam off of her. This could take a while.”
Ian realized that he needed to notify his parents as well, and called them with the news. One by one, Cody and Alyssa and the 19 year old quintuplets all arrived at the scene. Bryana stayed home with the 13 year old quadruplets. This was not a place for a disabled person or young teenagers. After about two hours, a mobile crane arrived at the scene, and the crane operator and the firefighters strategized about how to safely lift the beam and pull Jazmyn out from under it. Another half hour later, and they extricated her, put her into the ambulance, and sped off to the hospital. Ian rode in the front of the ambulance, and the rest of Jazmyn’s relatives on the scene followed behind. The family was only able to get a glimpse of her as they brought her out from the store, and she was still unconscious.
At the emergency room, they wanted the tool to remove Jazmyn’s eternity collar so that they could x-ray her neck. Since she was unconscious and had suffered major trauma, they were x-raying her entire body to check for broken bones. Victor told them, “She keeps one in her purse in the case of an emergency, but I assume you don’t have that. I keep the other one, but it’s at home. I can go get it if you need it.” The nurse went back and reported that to the x-ray technician. Shortly she came back and said, “Never mind. It’s loose enough that we can move it up and down some, so we’ll get what we need with two x-rays instead of one.”
A while later, a doctor came out and found the family. He took Victor aside and gave him the news. “I’m not going to sugar coat this. Both of her legs are badly crushed and necrosis has set in. That means the tissue in her legs has died, due to the blood vessels being pinched shut from the weight of the roof beam. Her legs cannot be saved; we have no choice but to amputate. The amputations are going to be pretty high, up close to her pelvis. She’s being taken up to surgery now. She also has some other minor injuries – a concussion, a few cracked ribs, and cuts and bruises. Oh, and one more thing. She’s in the early stages of pregnancy – no more than a few weeks along. It’s way too early to know how the baby fared through this, but since she doesn’t have any apparent lower abdominal injuries, we think the baby’s chances are good.”
Victor then huddled with Cody and Alyssa and filled them in. “It looks like fate has decided that Jaz should be legless after all. They need to amputate both legs, up high near the pelvis. Also, she’s a few weeks pregnant, but they don’t know the condition of the baby. Doc said the odds are good, though.” Victor asked them to keep the pregnant part to themselves for now, with Bryana being the exception. He didn’t even know if Jazmyn knew she was pregnant yet. The three of them then told Ian and the quints about the imminent leg amputations, and the group moved up to the surgical wing waiting room. Alyssa slipped away and called Bryana to update her.
About three hours later, a surgeon came out and told them he’d finished the amputations, and they were taking Jazmyn to the recovery room. She hadn’t regained consciousness before the surgery, but they’d given her general anesthesia and loaded her up on pain meds, so it would be a while before she even could regain consciousness. Her brain activity was good, though, so the surgeon was optimistic, but his specialty was orthopedics, so he was no expert. She would be thoroughly evaluated by a neurologist, but until she woke up, there was only so much they could do.
Victor and the parents weren’t particularly concerned about Jazmyn losing her legs, or how she’d react once she found out they were gone, since they knew Jazmyn had given serious consideration to having them removed electively. They were much more concerned that she hadn’t yet regained consciousness. All they could do now was wait.
Chapter 21 – Legless and pregnant
Victor spent the night in Jazmyn’s hospital room, while her parents and siblings returned home. Victor promised to keep them updated if there was any news.
In the middle of the night, Jazmyn woke up. She felt like hell and was very woozy. She tried to get her bearings, and realized she was in a hospital room, and Victor was asleep in the chair next to her. “Victor?” she called out weakly. Victor instantly sprang awake. He took her hand, and said “I’m here, baby. I’m so glad you’re awake!” “Victor,” she repeated, “what happened to me?” She had no memory of anything bad happening, but yet here she was.
“You were at the drug store, and a tornado hit and the roof collapsed,” he said, trying not to overwhelm her with too much information at once. “You’ve been unconscious ever since,” he added. “How long have I been out?” she asked. “About twelve hours, maybe,” he replied. He reached for the nurse call button. “The nurse told me to let them know right away if you woke up,” he explained.
Two nurses came in and one began asking Jazmyn a series of questions while the other recorded her responses and made notes. They were trying to assess her cognitive function, and so the questions ranged from questions about herself, to math problems, to current events and pop culture questions. One of the nurses held a stopwatch, and it was apparent that they were not just looking for correct answers, but also how quickly she could come up with the answers. As far as Victor could tell, her answers were correct and her response times reasonable, much to his relief. The nurses then asked Jazmyn if she needed anything, to which she responded negatively, and then they left the room.
Jazmyn had more questions for Victor, however. “I can tell I’m full of pain meds, but I can also feel some mild pain – no, more like discomfort, I’d say. I bet I’d be hurting like hell without the meds. I can feel it in my head and both legs, and also in my chest if I take too deep of a breath. So what kind of injuries do I have?”
Here we go, thought Victor to himself. “You have a concussion, which explains the pain in your head and the nurses trying to assess your mental state. You have a few cracked ribs, which accounts for the pain in your chest. Just try to avoid breathing deeply.” “Those don’t sound so bad,” Jazmyn said hopefully. “Well, brace yourself, because it gets a lot worse. Or maybe better, depending on your perspective,” Victor said. Jazmyn was confused by this, evident from the puzzled look on her face.
Victor continued. “A huge roof beam fell on your legs and had you pinned for a couple of hours. They got the beam off of you and pulled you out in one piece, but both of your legs were so severely injured they had to amputate them.” He stopped to let that sink in. Jazmyn looked down at where her legs should have been and saw that the blanket was completely flat. She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, and she ended up doing both simultaneously.
“Tell me what you’re thinking, Jaz,” said Victor. “Your face is sending mixed messages.” Jazmyn continued to both laugh and cry, but managed to say, “I’m thinking about a hundred different things right now. Mostly how it seems that I was destined to be legless one way or the other.”
“Are you okay with it?” Victor asked, not that it made much difference. “Actually, yes. In a way, I’m relieved. Now I can stop second-guessing myself about whether to have them removed.” “I thought you’d decided you wanted to keep them,” said Victor, confused. “No, that’s not quite right,” Jazmyn said, trying to clarify. “I was fine with the idea of being legless. I actually wanted to be legless. What I couldn’t bring myself to do was consent to have them removed voluntarily. It just seemed wrong for so many reasons. Now it’s happened anyway, so I suppose I got what I wanted without having to feel guilty about it.
“How much of them did they take?” asked Jazmyn. Victor replied, “I haven’t seen them yet, but the surgeon said he was going to have to cut pretty high up, so there shouldn’t be much left.” “Good,” said Jazmyn. “I was hoping that was the case."
Jazmyn face suddenly turned serious. “Victor, the only people who know I wanted to be legless are you, my parents, and Grandma. You must swear them all to secrecy! No one else must ever know I wished this on myself! Do you understand?” “Completely,” Victor replied. “Consider it done.”
“What other bombshells do you have for me?” she asked. “There’s one more,” said Victor in reply. “You’re pregnant.” “Oh my gosh!” exclaimed Jazmyn excitedly, as she held out her arms indicating she wanted Victor to hug her. As he did, she suddenly pushed him away so she could look him in the eyes and got a serious look on her face. “Wait. Is the baby okay?” she asked with concern. “They said as far as they could tell, yes, but you’re not far enough along for them to know for sure. I’ll guess we’ll just have to wait and see.” “How far along am I?” Jazmyn asked. “I don’t know exactly. They just said a few weeks.”
Jazmyn thought for a minute. “I think that may be why I was in the drug store, to buy a pregnancy test. In any case, let’s be happy about it and hope for the best,” she said as she pulled Victor back in to finish that interrupted hug. “Now, if you don’t mind, all this excitement has worn me out. I’m going to try to rest now,” she said as she closed her eyes. In only a matter of seconds she was asleep, with a contented smile still on her face. After all, she was now… legless and pregnant!
