Chapter 7: Dates and relationships
We went out to dinner with Nick that evening and had a lovely time. He took us to a small restaurant that was new to us, and so while we did get some stares, we weren’t in a huge place where it would have been overwhelming. The poor waiter was quite startled when he first came to the table and suddenly realized we were conjoined. But to his credit, he recovered quickly and proceeded to act like everything was normal. He did call us ladies, plural, which we appreciated. He sought clarification whether we were ordering one or two drinks and meals, but that didn’t bother us. It’s certainly better to ask than assume incorrectly. At least he didn’t try to charge us a plate fee for sharing a meal, or at least we assume so, since he didn’t mention it. We didn’t actually see the bill, of course.
He also didn’t mind getting us a second set of silverware. We like to each have our own fork and napkin when we eat. We just need one knife, though, since cutting is a two-handed operation. Since the knife is on the right in a normal place setting, Lily always holds the knife and Rose holds the fork when we cut meat, or she holds the roll or slice of bread when we’re putting butter on it.
This was the first date we’d been on since high school, and the first one ever with only one guy. We were determined not to screw it up. We really tried hard to be on our good behavior, not ranting about our problems, and not tormenting Nick with mind games. We talked about our families and hometowns, our college experiences, and our aspirations. Normal stuff for anyone trying to get to know each other.
After dinner, Nick took us to a comedy club. We were able to find seats in the back corner where we wouldn’t be likely to draw attention. Nick suggested that the two of us should try doing stand-up comedy some time when they had open mike night; he said we certainly had funny stories to tell about conjoined life, and our interactions with each other were funny as well. It was a fun idea, but we didn’t know if we’d ever have the nerve to do it. All our life, we’ve tried to avoid drawing attention to ourselves.
When we arrived home, Nick walked us to the door. We’d already decided our strategy. Being relative novices at dating, and this being a first date, he wasn’t going to get very far, at least not that night, but he didn’t know that. We got to the front door, and we thanked him for a lovely evening. We all kind of stood there for a minute, each waiting for the other(s) to make a move. We weren’t going to invite him in. He asked if he could kiss us goodnight, and we said yes, but on our cheeks. It was funny to us, because he didn’t know how to proceed with two of us to kiss. We guided him rather than let him flounder. “Come between us, and kiss us on our inside cheeks.” He did, and we simultaneously planted kisses on his as we each grabbed one of his hands. Of course, he had to kiss us one at a time, but we knew he couldn’t help it. It was just a limitation of being a singleton.
Over the following weeks we went out several more times with Nick. We proceeded to hugging, kissing on the mouth, inviting him in to our apartment, and sitting together on the sofa. We had to alternate who got to sit next to him, of course. We weren’t really sure how things should progress after that. With singleton couples, the next step would probably be making out on the sofa, but with us that would probably mean one of us enjoying herself and the other left out and looking on.
Before we could bring this up with Nick, he hit us with a more significant question. “We’ve been dating regularly for a while now, flower girls,” he pointed out. “I’m kind of wondering where this is going, or at least where it might go. I haven’t seen anyone else since we first started, and I don’t get the impression you have, either. To be honest, I don’t want to see anyone else. So, I’d like to propose that we take the natural next step, and become officially exclusive. Are you in?”
“No, we haven’t seen anyone else, either,” we replied. We both took a deep breath. “This would be a really big step for us. A huge step. Not that we’re opposed to it or anything. But we’re relationship virgins. Neither of us have been in anything close to a relationship before, so we’re already in uncharted territory, and it’s frankly kind of scary. By the way, you’re in uncharted territory, too, if you didn’t realize it, because you’ve never been in a three-way relationship, let alone one with a pair of conjoined twins.
“So there’s now a proposal on the table, and it’s sitting there waiting for us to say yea or nay. But we’d like to just leave the proposal sitting there for a while, and we hope you won’t rescind the offer because you get tired of waiting. We’re definitely on the path leading to a relationship with you, Nick, but you’re ahead of us a ways and we need some time to catch up. Does that make sense?”
“Yes, I understand, and I appreciate your position. I’m disappointed, but not as much as I’m encouraged that you’ve said you’re on the path. That means we’re going in the same direction. So, yes, of course I’ll wait for you to catch up, and there’ll be no pressure, I promise. You go at the speed you’re comfortable with, okay?”
“Thanks for understanding,” we replied. “We’ll get there. We want to get there.”
We continued. “So, anyway, we were wanting to talk to you about a related topic. Now’s as good a time as any, we suppose. That’s how are we going to progress in our physical relationship.” We paused to let that sink in and to gather our thoughts. “Go on, I’m listening,” Nick said.
“We’ve already as far as we’ve ever been physically with a guy, or guys,” we said. “But in the past when we were this far along, we each had our own guy. We have to share you, and when we’re sitting on the sofa together, that means we have to take turns, because you can only sit on one side of us or the other. We don’t like taking turns; we both want you and don’t like to be kept waiting.
“If and when we get to having sex, it won’t be a problem anymore, but in the meantime, we want to figure out how to both enjoy you at the same time. This is new for us as well as you, so we need to talk it through and maybe try different things until we find something that we all like. It boils down to this: we want to cuddle with you in front of us somehow, or maybe behind us, but not off to one side. So, we’re open to any suggestions you may have.”
Nick replied, “Yeah, the same thing has occurred to me as well. I realize that when we’re side-by-side I have to neglect one of you, and I don’t want to do that, either.” He thought about it for a moment and then said, “I don’t think there’s really an easy way to do that on the sofa. We should try different positions on the bed, with our clothes on, of course, until you’re ready for more.” If you don’t want to use the bed, then I think we’d probably have to be on the floor, or we’ll need to get a beanbag chair or something.”
We sisters looked at each other and both shrugged. We replied, “We don’t have any hang-ups about being on the bed with you, especially since the sofa’s not working out very well for us. We decided long ago that singleton sexual taboos don’t necessarily apply to conjoineds. If you know where we can get a free or cheap beanbag, we can try that, too, but for now, let’s use the bed.”
Nick picked right up on that comment about taboos. “That reminds me about something you said shortly after we first met, about benefits to being conjoined that you couldn’t say in polite company. I’ve wondered about what you meant by that ever since. Now I’m wondering if it’s related to the taboos that you’ve rejected, and I’m also wondering whether you still consider me to be ‘polite company’, because you really have my curiosity aroused.”
Feeling mischievous, I, Rose said to Nick, “I think we know you well enough now to know you’re not at all polite,” as I winked my eye at him. Then I said to Lily, “Why don’t we give him a little PG-13 preview, and see if we can arouse more than just his curiosity?” The two of us then turned toward each other and began passionately kissing as we each caressed the other’s breast through our clothes. We kept it up for a good half a minute when Nick finally said, “Oh God, that is so hot!” We could both see the bulge in his pants. We stopped then; we had achieved the desired effect.
Nick said, “I know you’re not lesbians since you’re involved with me, but I have to ask, are you bi?” We replied, “Actually, we’re not. We have no interest in other girls.” “I don’t understand, then,” he said.
“Of course you don’t; you’re a singleton,” we said in reply. “You masturbate, don’t you?” we asked him. He nodded affirmatively, with kind of a sheepish look on his face. “Well, so do we. The difference is, we both feel everything down there. So while one of us is masturbating, the other is getting fingered, which would be equivalent to someone giving you a hand job. I bet if a girl is giving you a hand job, you’d be inclined to kiss and caress her while she’s doing that if she’s within reach. Same for us when we’re being fingered by the other.”
“So the taboo you’re rejecting is…” said Nick, expecting us to finish the sentence. “Do we have to spell it out for you?” we asked. “If one singleton sister fingered another like that, it’d probably be considered incest. If we considered it incest and therefore forbidden, neither of us would ever be able to pleasure herself, either. So we decided it was just a silly singleton taboo that doesn’t apply to us.”
“I guess I still have a lot to learn about being conjoined,” Nick said. “You’ll always have a lot to learn, singleton, because if you haven’t experienced it firsthand, you can’t possibly know what it’s like,” we said in reply.
So anyway, over the next few weeks we tried out various cuddling positions on the bed, plus a few on the sofa that we thought of. Some we immediately rejected, others we tried for a while and rejected, and others weren’t too bad. Nick bought us an extra-large beanbag meant for two people, and we found some pleasant ways to snuggle on that, too. Once we did, we were done with the sofa.
We found that the cuddling positions that worked best for us were either lying on our sides and facing each other, or various ways of spooning, where Nick was either in front of or behind us and we were all facing the same direction. Spooning wasn’t a good position for kissing, but it provided the most body contact, and it worked best for watching TV.
We knew we couldn’t leave Nick hanging forever. We both knew we wanted to make the relationship we already had with him official; it was just a matter of working it out in our respective heads.
Rose: So what are we going to tell Nick?
Lily: About what?
Rose: What he’s been waiting to hear: Whether we’ll be exclusive with him.
Lily: We’re already exclusive with him.
Rose: I know that, but it isn’t official until we tell him it is. So, do you have any inkling to date anyone else, either now or in the foreseeable future?
Lily: No. I really like Nick.
Rose: So do I. I don’t want to see anyone else, either. Do you have any other reason to not commit to him? I don’t.
Lily: I guess not.
Rose: You can’t guess. You have to be sure.
Lily: We’ve never done this before.
Rose: I know, but there’s a first time for everything. What’s holding you back, sis?
Lily: I don’t know.
Rose: Well, is there anything about him that concerns you?
Lily: No, he’s been nothing but great.
Rose: Does us getting into a three-way with him bother you?
Lily: No, we’re doing that already.
Rose: Are you afraid to make a commitment to him?
Lily: Kind of, yeah, I guess.
Rose: And why is that? Are you afraid someone better will come along, or do you not want to give up your carefree, single lifestyle, or what?
Lily: I guess it just sounds so… official, I guess.
Rose: Lily, it’s just a verbal agreement affirming the status quo. All we’re committing to do is what we’re already doing – have a relationship with him and not date anyone else. But that commitment only lasts until either we say it’s over or he does, and we can do that at any time, for any reason, or for no reason at all. Any other changes would have to be agreed upon by all three of us. Plus, we’ll now be able to say he’s our boyfriend, and we’ll gain the status of being his girlfriends.
Lily: Well, when you put it that way, it doesn’t sound so scary. Thanks.
Rose: Can we tell him we’ll do it, then?
Lily: Yes.
Rose: You’re sure now?
Lily: Yes.
Rose: All right, then. We’ll tell him the next time we see him. Actually, I want you to be the one to tell him.
Lily: Why me?
Rose: Because if you get cold feet again, I don’t want to put words into your mouth and have you resent me.
Lily: You mean a cold foot. I only have one foot. But I get it; I’ll tell him.
A couple of days later, Nick came by. We had invited him over for a home cooked meal. Lily was going to tell him the news while we ate. But we got all the way through the meal and she hadn’t yet. We cleared the table and had Nick go sit down. I, Rose, whispered to her, Are you still okay? Yes, she said. Are you going to tell him?, I asked. Yes, she said. What are you waiting for?, I asked. Don’t worry, was all she said.
Later that evening, Nick was starting to hint that he’d be leaving soon, and Lily still hadn’t said anything. I, Rose, took matters in to my own hands. Well, hand; I only have one. I said to Nick, “Nick, before you go, Lily has something she wants to tell you.” Nick thought that was unusual; usually either of us would speak for both of us. Lily shot me a quick glance that indicated annoyance. But to her credit, she spoke up.
“Nick…” Lily said very tentatively. “Rose and I have discussed this, and we would be honored to accept your proposal to be in an exclusive relationship with you, if you’ll still have us.” Nick’s face immediately lit up. “That’s wonderful! Of course I’ll still have you!” he said enthusiastically. He then held Lily’s cheeks as he kissed her, and then he did the same to me.
“Just one question, though,” he said. “What was with Rose saying that Lily had something to say when the message was from both of you? Usually if you both have something to tell me, one of you just says it.”
Lily didn’t immediately reply, so I, Rose, said to her, “Do you want to respond or shall I?” “I’ll do it,” Lily said to me reluctantly. Then she addressed Nick. “Rose was a lot more sure of this than I was, so she said I should be the one to tell you, so that she wouldn’t be putting words in my mouth if I started having second thoughts. I told her I’d tell you during dinner, but I couldn’t work up the nerve. Then the whole rest of the evening went by, and you were getting ready to leave, and I still hadn’t done it. She wasn’t going to let me put it off any longer, and so she put me on the spot so that I’d say what I needed to say.”
Nick looked concerned. He addressed Lily. “If Rose pressured you to commit to a relationship, then we have a problem. A contract entered into under duress isn’t legally binding. We all three have to be totally on board with this, or it’s null and void. Either that, or we have to figure out how I can have a relationship with Rose but not with you. If that’s the case, we should probably go back to using the sofa.”
Lily began to cry. “I’ve made such a mess of this! I’m so sorry!” she said. She paused to gather her thoughts, and then continued. “Rose didn’t pressure me to commit. She said the same thing, that we all three had to be ready or we wouldn’t do it. She helped me overcome my fears of committing, and I’m grateful that she did that. She was right to have me be the one to tell you, Nick. The only thing she pressured me to do was to tell you tonight, like I had agreed to do. She was just keeping me accountable. But I wouldn’t have done it if I wasn’t sure, and I wouldn’t have said what I said if I didn’t mean it.” Then Lily lost her composure and began sobbing.
Nick tried to console Lily, but also to understand what was going through her head. He said, “Why were you reluctant to tell me tonight, Lily?” “Because I’m stupid!” she practically shouted between sobs. “I’m so stupid! There was no reason to put it off; I didn’t want to put it off, but that’s what I was trying to do anyway. I don’t even know why.” Lily’s sobbing continued.
“You’re not stupid, Lily. Conflicted, maybe. Do you want to wait a while longer while you sort out your thoughts? We can just put the relationship on pause, or agree that it never actually began”, suggested Nick. “NO!” said Lily emphatically. “It was hard to say, but I meant every word of it. Now that I’ve said it I’m not taking it back, and I definitely don’t want to have to start over and have to say it again. But Nick, and Rose, too, if you want to reconsider, now that you see what a mess I am, I don’t blame you.”
I, Rose, laughed at that last comment. I replied, “Lily, I’ve always known what a mess you are, but I’m kind of stuck with you.” Lily laughed, too, through her tears. “Thanks for your support, sis,” she said tongue-in-cheek.
Nick replied, “You can’t scare me off that easily, Lily. As long as you’re absolutely certain about being in a relationship with me, we’ll consider it official.” “I am,” replied Lily. “Okay, then,” Nick said mischievously. “I get to tell everyone I’m in a three-way relationship with a stunning pair of identical twin sisters! This ought to be fun!” Lily and Rose just laughed.
After Nick left, I, Rose, said to my mess of sister, “What was that all about? Why was it so hard to do what you knew you wanted to do?” “I wish I knew,” said Lily. “But it doesn’t matter now. We have a boyfriend!” Hearing the excitement in her voice as she said that, I knew she’d be okay.
Chapter 8: Uncharted territory
Having a boyfriend was a pretty big deal for us, since we were 22 years old and Nick was the first one either of us had ever had. We were eager to share the news with our family and close friends, including Gabi, who was in Washington, D.C. for the summer working as an intern, and of course, Cassie, who had connected us with Nick in the first place.
Our smart-alec brother, learning that we were sharing a single boyfriend, told us, “He’s in a relationship with both of you? I don’t know whether to congratulate him or offer him my condolences. He gets to live out every guy’s fantasy, to be in a three-way with twins, but he also gets to be nagged in stereo.”
“We don’t nag him!” we said in unison. “Not yet, maybe,” he replied. “I don’t think there’s been a relationship in the history of the world where the guy didn’t get nagged by the girl, given enough time. Sometimes I can see the advantages of being gay. Anyway, I’m happy for you both. I hope he’s worthy of you.” “Thanks, bro,” we said. “We think he is.”
Gabi and Cassie were thrilled for us, of course. Gabi hadn’t even met Nick yet, because she was already away at her internship in D.C. when we started seeing him. She looked forward to meeting him when she returned to start law school in a few weeks.
Nothing really changed now that our relationship with Nick was official, other than we could now refer to him as our boyfriend rather than the guy we were dating, and it pleased us immensely to do that.
Gabi showed up at the apartment with her father and a van load of stuff early on a Saturday evening while Nick was over. We were the only ones who knew everyone, so we introduced Nick to Gabi and her father. Gabi said to Nick, “I hope you’ve been taking good care of them and treating them right, because they’re very special girls.” Before Nick could answer, we came to his defense and assured her that he had been. Then Nick responded as well, “Believe me, I know how special they are.” We were touched by both of their sentiments. Then Nick and we helped Gabi and her father unload the van. That certainly helped Nick win some points in both their eyes. Mr. Vernon then departed, and Nick read the room and realized that Gabi and we really wanted to catch up with each other. He made an excuse about having to get up early and we walked him to the door. Gabi watched out of the corner of her eye as he kissed us each goodbye and left.
As soon as he was gone, Gabi said to us, “Nick seems nice. Does he make you happy?” “Very happy,” we replied. “He’s been great. We really like him a lot.” “Just ‘like’? Not love?” she asked in a sing-song voice. “We’re getting there,” we told her. “We’ve only been in a relationship for a few weeks now.” She said, “I see you got a beanbag. Been doing some cuddling on it?” “Well, duh!” we said. We spent the rest of the evening, and into the wee hours of the night, filling each other in on Nick, our job, and Gabi’s Washington experience.
Gabi circled back around to Nick. “Do you think he’s husband material?” “It’s still early, but yeah, he has potential,” we replied. “Well, I wish you all the best. I’m glad you’re happy with him,” she said. “I look forward to getting to know him.” “We think you’ll really like him, Gabi,” we said, “but you can’t have him. He’s ours!” We were joking, of course. We knew Gabi would never try to steal him from us.
She asked, “How’s the sharing one guy thing working out for you?” We replied, “So far, so good. That’s why we got the beanbag – or rather, why Nick got it for us. We couldn’t share him very well sitting on the sofa together. He’s careful to pay equal attention to both of us, and neither of us feels at all jealous. We already share most everything else, so it seems completely natural to share him, too.” “Well, good,” Gabi said in reply. “I’m happy for you both.”
Then Gabi said, “I know this is going to sound incredibly personal and intrusive, but you guys are novices in the relationship game, so I have to ask for your sake. Have you gotten on birth control yet?” “No, but we’re not having sex with him yet,” we replied. Gabi looked at us like we were complete idiots, which, in hindsight, we’re certain she thought we were.
“You do know you have to already be on the pill before you have sex if you don’t want to get pregnant, right?” she asked somewhat condescendingly. “Unless you, and he, have an incredible amount of self-restraint, one of these days it’s going to happen. In the heat of the moment, you’ll want it more than anything, and you won’t care that you’re not protected. Or possibly, he won’t take no for an answer. Either way, there’s a good chance it’ll be too late then. So please take my advice. Be proactive, and get started on the pill well before that happens. I’m not kidding, and I’m going to bug you about it until you take care of it. You hear me?”
Rather than be offended, we appreciated that Gabi was looking out for us even when it was uncomfortable. We both saw her point, and she was right. “Yes,” we said in unison, rather sheepishly. “And when are you going to do it?” she asked. “We’ll call our doctor on Monday,” we said. “Good. I’m going to ask you Monday evening if you have, so don’t disappoint me,” she said. She was taking this very seriously.
Knowing we’d have to answer to Gabi, we did call our doctor on Monday, got a prescription for birth control pills, and began taking them faithfully. It was just as well, too, because over the course of next couple of months, our physical relationship with Nick progressed until Gabi’s prediction came true. Not the one where Nick didn’t understand the word ‘no’; the other one. Let’s just say that Nick had both of us writhing in ecstasy. We had no idea sex was so much more enjoyable than masturbation. Once we experienced that, there was no turning back. We let Nick have his way with us at every opportunity.
Our relationship continued to become more and more serious. We brought Nick to meet our family and he brought us to meet his. Each family graciously welcomed their relative’s significant other(s). We spent more and more time at Nick’s apartment, and less at ours, because Nick lived alone and we had more privacy there. We even moved the beanbag chair to his place.
We thought about just moving in with Nick, but by now it was December and our apartment lease wasn’t up until August. We’d need a place to store our stuff that we wouldn’t need at Nick’s, such as our bedroom furniture, so it might be easiest to go ahead and move in with Nick but keep paying our share of the apartment rent. But Gabi could see where this was heading, and she asked us about it.
“You guys are spending less and less time here,” she said. “It’s all the same to me, but I’m wondering if you’re wanting to get out of your lease and move in with Nick.” “Gabi, we wouldn’t bail on you like that. We’ll keep paying our rent whether we’re here or not,” we told her. “I appreciate that,” she replied, “but that’s not what I’m asking. I know you’ll honor your commitment. I’m asking if you’d like to get out of your commitment.
“The reason I’m asking is that I know someone who might want to sub-lease from you or sign a new lease with me. I have a classmate who’s in a bad situation in her current living arrangement and needs a new place to live. It could be a win-win if you were to move out and she moves in. But there’s no pressure. I’m not asking you to leave; I’m just saying if you were wanting to, we might be able to work it out so you don’t have to keep paying rent here.”
“We’ll have to discuss it between ourselves and with Nick,” we said. “But it’s certainly a possibility. Give us a couple of days and we’ll let you know.” Once Gabi was out of earshot, the two of us discussed it.
Rose: Okay, my commitment-adverse bodymate, this is going to probably come down to what you want to do, like usual. So what’s your first impression about Gabi’s suggestion?
Lily: It would be a big step, to not only move in with Nick but to not have a place of our own to go back to.
Rose: Nick’s place would be our new home. We wouldn’t just be spending the night anymore; we’d be living there full-time. It would certainly be taking our relationship to the next level. Are you ready for that?
Lily: I’m sure this will come as a shock, but yeah, I think I am. We’ve been heading down the path towards moving in together with him anyway. We have a great thing going with Nick, and I could see it becoming permanent someday. I kind of hope it becomes permanent. So I say, why not do it? What do we have to lose? But what do you think?
Rose: We’re of one accord, sister. It’s as if you read my mind. But I have one condition. Well, two, I guess, but they’re related. I want to hear Nick say he loves us. Not us, actually, but me. And you. He needs to love us individually, not just as a package deal. And I want us to both tell him that we love him. I think those are reasonable prerequisites to moving in with someone, don’t you?
Lily: I suppose so. But how are we going to get him to do that without putting him on the spot? I would think it needs to be sincere, and not just him saying it because we’re expecting him to.
Rose: I agree, it does need to be sincere, and I don’t know how we’re going to do it. Especially because we’ll need to do it quickly. We owe Gabi an answer.
Lily: What if we tell Gabi we’re cool with it, but we need more time to make sure Nick is? We tell her we’re almost sure he’ll agree if we asked him right now, which I think he would, but we want it to be on our terms, and for that we need some time. In the meantime, her friend could stay with us if she wants to. She could sleep on the sofa if we’re there.
Lily: Then we pull out all the stops and really butter him up. Make him his favorite home cooked meal, and make it really elaborate, or take him out to dinner to somewhere really nice and expensive. Get some good tickets and take him to a hockey or basketball game. Buy some really slinky lingerie. Seduce him and then give him the blowjob of his life.
Rose: He’ll know we’re up to something.
Lily: Yeah, but he won’t know what. If he asks us what we want, we’ll say we don’t want anything except to express our appreciation.
Rose: That might work. But are you ready to tell him you love him? And how are we going to get sports tickets without the same problems we have at movie theaters?
Lily: The tickets are easy. Sporting event tickets are for a specific seat. The seat number is printed on the ticket. So we’ll only need one for the two of us. If some ticket taker says it’s against the rules to share a seat, we’ll ask how can we possibly sit in two seats, because we have one ass. One ass in one seat isn’t sharing.
Rose: You didn’t answer my first question.
Lily: I was hoping you wouldn’t notice that.
Rose: Ah, there’s the Lily I know and love. I was wondering where you went. Let’s back up and I’ll ask an easier question. Do you love Nick?
Lily: Yes.
Rose: Can you actually say it to me?
Lily: I love Nick.
Rose: Good. Now can you add the word ‘you’ in that?
Lily: I love you, Nick.
Rose: Excellent. Now, will you be able to say that to his face?
Lily: I don’t know.
Rose: Well, I suggest you work on it. Practice saying it. Write it down. Make a video of yourself saying it. Do something so that you can deliver that message and he knows it’s from you. It won’t do at all to go to all that effort to get him to say it, and then you can’t say it back.
So we updated Gabi and started working on our plan. We realized it would be difficult to go to a sports event and cook an elaborate dinner on the same day. If we took him to a weekend afternoon game, we could go out to dinner that evening. Since Lily seemed to know so much about sports tickets, we agreed it was her job to find a suitable event and get good tickets. That meant it was Rose’s job to find a restaurant and make reservations once we knew the date of the game. We’d look at lingerie together and pick something we both liked. We nixed the blowjob idea because we’d never done it before and we didn’t want it to go wrong. Instead, we thought maybe we’d get some handcuffs and let Nick decide how to use them.
Gabi’s friend was looking for a place starting in January. The fall semester was nearly over, and then she’d go home for winter break. That took some of the pressure off to make it all happen fast, but we still didn’t want to leave her hanging. Gabi thought her father might be able to get us good tickets, especially to a state university event. But college sports were about to take a break for final exams, and they wouldn’t resume until after Christmas. Lily, however, found decent tickets to a pro basketball game on the upcoming Saturday afternoon. We checked to make sure Nick didn’t have plans that day, and he didn’t, so we told him he did now, and to keep the entire day open. Rose made the dinner reservation, and we’d have time to come home and change clothes in between.
Nick wanted to know what we had planned, but we wouldn’t tell him. On Friday, he insisted that he needed to know how to dress and when to be ready. We just told him we had two different things planned that day, gave him the two times, and told him he should dress casually for the afternoon event and dress up for the evening event. We’d pick him up at the appointed time for both events.
Of course, Nick was thrilled when he realized we were taking him to a basketball game. He kept saying we spent too much money and that we shouldn’t have. We just smiled and told him to shut up and enjoy himself. We bought snacks at the concession stand, but we made sure he knew he needed to save room for dinner. The only downer was an incident leaving the arena where a drunken fan going the opposite direction saw us, pointed at us, and yelled to his companions, “Jesus Christ! Look at the girl with two heads! It’s a goddamned freak show!” They and everyone who could see where he was pointing stared at us. But they kept walking and so did we, and it was over as quickly as it started. It bothered Nick more than it bothered us. That kind of thing is just something we’ve always have to put up with.
That evening we had a very pleasant dinner at an elegant restaurant. We encouraged Nick to have a few drinks, since we were driving. We successfully steered the conversation away from anything we might disagree about. But by now, he was getting curious about why we were lavishing all of this attention and money on him. Maybe even a bit suspicious. He asked us what we wanted, and we told him nothing; that we just wanted to show our appreciation to him for being such a great boyfriend.
We drove back to Nick’s place, and we gave him two giftwrapped boxes to open. He protested that it wasn’t his birthday, which of course we knew full well. In one box was the lingerie we had bought. In the other were two pairs of handcuffs. Nick was blown away, and kept asking what was going on. We insisted that nothing was going on. We told him we knew what to do with the lingerie, and we’d leave it up to him to figure out what to do with the handcuffs. We left him in the living room as we went into the bedroom to undress. Once we had the lingerie on and laid on the bed in a sexy pose, we called him back.
We had Nick so discombobulated that he was empty-handed. “You forgot something,” we said. He didn’t know what we were talking about. “The other gift, Nick,” we said. Then his expression showed that he didn’t leave them in the living room intentionally, and he went to retrieve them. We called out to him, “And you’re seriously overdressed for the occasion!”
Nick returned with the handcuffs and a whole lot less clothing on. He seemed uncertain. “Did you have anything in mind for me to do with these?” he asked, holding up the handcuffs. “No,” we replied. “Use your imagination. What have you always wanted to do with handcuffs and a willing girl? Now’s your chance!” We figured he’d do something vanilla like handcuff each of our wrists to the headboard, but we had given him permission to get creative and he did.
He cuffed each of our wrists to our own ankles, forcing us to hunch way over. He then maneuvered us so that we were face down on the bed, with everything between our shoulders and knees up in the air. We’ll leave the rest to your imagination, but it was quite pleasurable for all three of us, and we didn’t hold back letting him know how much we were enjoying ourselves.
We spent the night, of course, and in the morning got up and made Nick, and ourselves, a big breakfast. Nick kept trying to get us to tell him what we wanted. He knew he’d been buttered up for something, but he had no idea what. We insisted that we didn’t want anything. Of course, we really did, but we couldn’t tell him that, because we didn’t want him to feel obligated to say what we wanted him to say.
But clearly he needed a little help. So we told him, “We’ll give you a hint. We’ve been telling you all along that we wanted to show our appreciation to you, and that’s true. But we also did this in order to encourage you.” “Encourage me how?” he asked. We replied, “Encourage you to do something that you might have been contemplating. That’s all we’re saying. You have to figure the rest out yourself. And if you aren’t contemplating anything, well, at least we all had a fun weekend together.”
“Well, I was thinking about getting a new video game, but I don’t think that’s what you have in mind,” Nick said teasingly. “No, that’s not it,” we replied, playing along. His face turned more serious.
Nick: I do have two things I’ve been thinking about that involve you. Let’s see if either of these are it. I’ve been trying to figure out when and how to tell you I love you without it getting weird. I’m thinking about how hard it was for Lily to say she wanted a relationship, and I didn’t want to put you on the spot if either of you weren’t ready to say it back.
Rose: Why don’t you try it and see?
Nick: Okay. Here goes. I’ve fallen head-over-heels in love with you two over the past six or seven months. I love you both from the very depths of my soul. Whether or not you’re ready to say it back to me, it doesn’t change how I feel about you.
We, Lily and Rose, exchanged a glance. He was so close, but he didn’t quite say it the way we wanted to hear it. Nick could see our expressions and knew that wasn’t what we were after. But we couldn’t let him think it was something else entirely.
Rose: Speaking for both of us, we love you too, Nick. You’re so close. I’ll just give you a tip. Girls want their guys to make them feel special. We appreciate the sentiment, but I don’t feel particularly special by what you said. Do you feel special, Lily?
Lily: No, not really. Why don’t you give it another try, Nick?
Apparently, Nick figured out where he went wrong, because his second attempt was much better.
Nick: (looking Rose in the eyes and touching her cheek) Rose, I’m head-over-heels in love with you. I love you from the very depths of my soul.
Nick: (looking Lily in the eyes and touching her cheek) Lily, I’m head-over-heels in love with you. I love you from the very depths of my soul.
Rose: That is what we wanted to hear. Nick, I’m crazy in love with you, too. I love you with all my heart.
Lily: Nick…
Lily: (working up the nerve) Nick, I… I love you, too! The way Rose said.
Nick came in for a three-way hug, and then he kissed us passionately, one at a time.
Nick: Well, I’m glad we got that settled. And Lily, I know that was hard for you to say, so thank you for not giving in to your fears.
Rose: What’s the other thing you were considering, Nick?
Nick: I was thinking about asking if you’d consider moving in with me. As much as you’re over here, it seems silly to keep two apartments.
We exchanged another glance. This time it was one of approval.
Lily: That’s actually funny. The next thing we were going to say was to ask you the very same thing.
Rose: You see, that’s really what this was all about. But I wouldn’t ask you, or say yes if you asked us, until I first heard you say you loved me. Me, not ‘us’. And until Lily heard you say you loved her.
Lily: But no one’s actually asked anything yet, so let me. Nick, would you be willing to have us move in with you?
Nick: Yes, of course!
Lily: Then we will!
Rose: Agreed. But Nick, let this be a lesson to you. Please never forget that Lily and I are two different people, and we need you to always think of us that way and always treat us that way. We’ll take turns when we have to, but we each need individual attention from you. We are not the girl with two heads; we’re two girls in one body. We’re not LilyAndRose; she’s Lily, and I’m Rose. Okay?
Nick: Got it. I’m sorry for failing to do that. I know better; I really do. Thanks for working with me and setting me straight.
We reported back to Gabi that we would definitely move out and make way for her friend to move in. We weren’t going to need any of our furniture and not much of our kitchen stuff at Nick’s. We worked it out to sell our half of the stuff we’d bought jointly with Gabi as well as our own stuff to either Gabi or her new roommate. We gradually moved the stuff we wanted to keep over to Nick’s as time permitted.
We were really in uncharted territory now, actually living with our boyfriend full-time. To stay out of trouble with the landlord, Nick had our names added to the lease. The people in the rental office initially balked at allowing three people to live in a one-bedroom apartment, but when we showed up in person to discuss it with them, they quickly understood and relented.
Now we had to adjust to Nick’s ways of doing things and he had to adjust to ours. He’d never lived with a girl before, and was completely unprepared for how we took over his bathroom, both in terms of space and time. We were unprepared for how he left his clothes, underwear, towels, etc., all over the place and his dirty dishes in the sink. It put stress on our relationship as we had to work out these issues and adjust to new expectations. But we all wanted this living arrangement to work, so we adapted when we could and negotiated when we couldn’t. Before long, we had settled into a comfortable routine.
