Part 5 takes a brief break from Bryana and further develops the relationship between Alyssa and Cody.  Then it’s back to limbless Bryana and her natural pregnancy carrying and delivering quintuplets.  The triplets, now four years old, start asking uncomfortable questions, as does the press.

Part 5 consists of the following chapters:

Alyssa and Cody

The next day, Cody did some searching for possible vacation ideas and came up with a few that looked promising. He also talked to Nicole and his in-laws about covering for Alyssa and him if they were to take a vacation, but he swore them to secrecy.  It helped that the triplets were a lot less work now that they were three years old. All three thought that Alyssa could use a break and were willing to do whatever was necessary.

Cody then broached the subject with Alyssa.  As he expected, she rejected the idea of going away, saying that she was needed here and that she would be fine.  But Cody persisted.  He told her that Bryana was the one who suggested it and was pretty insistent about it, and that he, Nicole, and her parents all agreed that she needed a break and were willing to help make it happen.  Alyssa eventually relented and agreed to go.  They did take Bryana’s earlier suggestion to go to the mountains and spend their days hiking on various trails to see especially breathtaking scenery.

The two shared a hotel room but slept in separate beds.  Neither of them, nor Bryana, had any concern that one would make any moves on the other. Alyssa had zero interest in sex and in fact found it to be painful and unpleasant, and Cody and Bryana both knew that. Also, Cody, despite his sex drive, was always a complete gentleman around women other than Bryana, and both she and Alyssa knew that.  Cody and Alyssa’s unusual relationship was somewhat like that of a brother and sister.  But Cody couldn’t help thinking she was sort of an alternate version of Bryana, what Bryana would be if she still had her limbs but wasn’t interested in sex.  Between the two twins, they made a complete package.  So here he was hiking with the able-bodied, sexless version of Bryana, the woman he loved with all his heart.  It was a little weird, he had to admit, but it worked for the three of them.

Cody and Alyssa thoroughly enjoyed themselves hiking and taking in the scenery.  Alyssa was mostly able to get her mind off her worries, and though she missed their kids when she periodically thought of them, she knew they were in good hands back home.  As Bryana had predicted, both Cody and Alyssa felt like they were bonding with each other and feeling more like the teammates they were as father and mother to the triplets.

On the last day before they were to head home, the two were on yet another hike when Alyssa fell and injured her ankle.  It was too painful to put weight on, and they weren’t sure if it was broken.  They were a couple of miles from the nearest ranger station, and they had no signals on their phones.  Also, being a weekday, there weren’t many other hikers around. Cody could either leave her and get help, or he could carry her out.  He chose the latter.  Who knew if the next thing to come around the bend might be a sexual predator, or a mother bear with a cub?  They started out with Alyssa on Cody’s back, but it was slow going and he could only do that for so long.  He then carried her in his arms, but that was even slower and more difficult.  With her in front of him, he couldn’t see where he was stepping and didn’t want to trip on a rock or a root and injure himself or further injure Alyssa.  He ended up alternating back and forth between the two methods of carrying her. As the hike back to the ranger station proceeded, the physical contact, Cody in role of rescuer, and Alyssa in the role of damsel in distress, all caused them to both feel an emotional closeness they’d never experienced with each other before.  When they finally reached the ranger station and he set her down, she surprised both of them by holding him tight and kissing him passionately. Cody didn’t resist; he had been contemplating dong the same thing.  The ranger arranged to get them to a doctor’s office in town, where the doctor diagnosed her injury as nothing more than a bad sprain.  He wrapped her ankle, provided her with a pair of crutches to use, prescribed some pain meds, and recommended that she consult her own doctor when she got home.

Back at the hotel room, Alyssa, feeling guilty, said to Cody, I’m sorry I kissed you like that.  I don’t know what came over me.  Cody replied, Don’t be; I’m not.  You notice I didn’t push you away.  Alyssa said, But what about Bryana?  It’s wrong to kiss your sister’s husband, or in your case, your wife’s sister like that.  I feel like a tramp.  Cody responded.  Alyssa, you’re much more than just my sister-in-law.  You are mother to my children, my co-parent, my domestic partner.  There’s no getting around that we’re in this weird threesome together.  I would be married to both of you if it were legal.  And recall what Bryana put in our family agreement.  She would not object to the two of us hugging or kissing or the like if we chose to do so.  She’s willing to share me with you in that way.  We haven’t broken any rules we all agreed to, and I’m not worried that we will. Alyssa nodded.  I remember.  But it still feels wrong, and I can’t help but wonder if Bryana really would object despite saying she wouldn’t.  Cody replied, If it feels wrong, no one’s going to make you do it again, and I won’t say anything unless she asks a direct question.  I’m not going to lie to her.

It suddenly registered in Alyssa’s brain something that she thought she heard Cody say in his little mini-speech. She needed confirmation.  Did you say you’d marry me if it were legal?  You heard me, Cody replied.  Even though it would be a sexless marriage?, she asked. Cody told her, I get all the sex I want from Bryana, so I don’t need it from you, too.  But you bring things to the table that Bryana can’t, like going hiking with me.  Alyssa laughed.  I didn’t do a very good job of that today, did I?, she said rhetorically.  Cody laughed, too.  He said, That’s not the point.  You came, and we had fun.  But it‘s more than just that.  You’re a loving mother to my kids and you keep the household running like a top. Bryana can’t do those things, and I’m really fortunate that I have you to do them.  Alyssa went out on a limb.  Do you love me, Cody?, she asked as she looked in his eyes.  Yes, Alyssa, Cody said.  I love you.  Alyssa realized it had been a very long time – more than a decade ago, when she was a teenager – since she had heard those words from a guy.  It suddenly dawned on her that she felt the same way.  I love you, too, Cody, she said.  Then she hobbled over to him, wrapped her arms around him, and once again kissed him passionately.  When they had finished, he said, There’s another thing that Bryana can’t do.  I haven’t been hugged by a girl since she got her amputations.  It felt good.  Thanks.

Alyssa decided that she needed to fess up to Bryana about hugging and kissing Cody.  She would rather take her lumps if Bryana didn’t take it well than to keep secrets from her.  She just had to figure out how to spin it so it didn’t sound so sleazy.  So, a few days later when the kids were down for naps, she joined Bryana on the couch.  I had a really good time on vacation.  Thank you for suggesting it.  It was very therapeutic, she said.  Bryana responded, I knew it would be.  I’m glad you went.  Alyssa added, There’s something I need to tell you.  She paused, hesitating to say what she knew she must.  Cody and I became very close on this trip, she said. Alyssa braced herself for Bryana’s reaction.  But to her amazement, Bryana smiled.  Good, she said.  I was pretty sure you would.  Good?, Alyssa asked incredulously.  You’re not mad?  Should I be?, asked Bryana.  I’m assuming there was no sex.  No, there was no sex, or even anything close to it, Alyssa replied.  Then what’s the problem?, Bryana asked.  Alyssa replied, We really connected emotionally.  And we hugged and kissed a couple of times.  Most women would be insanely jealous to hear that that had happened between their sister and husband.

I’m clearly not most women, replied Bryana.  I’m glad it finally happened.  I wish you two had bonded a long time ago.  You’ve been going at this alone for far too long.  Yeah, you and Cody have the parenting thing, but it was almost like you were a divorced single parent.  You weren’t allowing yourself to get any emotional support from him.  I think that contributed to your not taking the quintuplet news well.  I want you two to be close.  I want you to feel like he’s got your back, because he does.  And we all need someone we can go to for a hug when we’re upset about something.  Even you. The three of us are in this relationship together, so I can’t in good conscience keep him from you.  He’s as much your husband as he is mine, even if you don’t have a license that says so.  Except for sex, but fortunately, that’s not an issue.  I think you’ll have a much easier time when the quints arrive if you let Cody be your emotional support as well as sharing parenting responsibilities with him.  If that means you two hug and kiss sometimes, I’m okay with it.  Really.  Just hug him for me occasionally.  The poor man hasn’t had a proper hug for years now.

Wow, Alyssa replied.  Thank you for being so understanding.  I had no idea you felt that way.  I mean, the agreement said it was okay, but I didn’t think you really would be.  I don’t know if I would be if our roles were reversed.  I am so lucky to have you as my sister!  You’ve given me your children and now you’re sharing your husband with me. I can’t tell you how many nights I cried myself to sleep thinking I would never have either.  Bryana said, I only ever wanted you to be happy.  As happy as I am.  I really hope you can be.  Alyssa moved over on the couch and hugged Bryana, and they had a good long cry together.

Bryana, fertility goddess, continued

Not unexpectedly, Bryana’s belly and boobs grew even more massive than ever before.  A normal woman would have had great difficulty getting off a couch, going up or down stairs, or even walking.  Fortunately, Bryana couldn’t do any of those things anyway, so it didn’t matter.  There were various lift devices, both permanently mounted and portable, throughout the house so that Bryana could be moved between wheelchair, bed, couch, chairs, toilet/bidet, etc. without someone having to physically lift her. The one above the toilet and bidet was getting a real workout; with five babies pressing down on her bladder, she had to pee seemingly constantly.  That was one of the big reasons why she needed Nicole around to help her, as Bryana couldn’t operate the lift devices or bidet herself, nor could she remove or put back on her panties and shorts.

As before, Bryana needed even larger bras and tops, preferred to keep her belly uncovered both to keep cool and so that she could look at it, and was turned on by her own girth, as of course was Cody.  When she was carrying quads, Cody had thought that life couldn’t get better, but now it was, with Bryana’s belly even bigger still and this time filled with his own babies rather than those of a stranger.  He got a hard-on every time he saw her or even thought about her, while Bryana was in a near constant state of at least low-level arousal, sometimes much higher. They banged the nasties nearly every chance they could, and their go-to position was with Bryana laying on top of her belly and Cody entering from the rear.  Their dirty talk was usually along the lines of five babies at once not being nearly enough, and that Cody would pump even more babies into her womb until she had reached some insane size and was completely immobile.  The thought of that was beyond hot for both of them.

In real life, subsequent ultrasounds seemed to confirm the two boys, three girls observation that Dr. Hopkins had originally made, so everyone planned accordingly.  Between the therapy, vacation, and emotionally bonding with Cody with Bryana’s full approval, Alyssa was in a much better state of mind about having five new babies to care for.  With the encouragement she had received from both Cody and Bryana, Alyssa made a conscious effort to think of Cody as her husband, and not just her brother-in-law or even the father of her children.  Alyssa began joining Cody and Bryana on the couch when they watched TV or movies together, and she and Cody would hold hands or she would snuggle against him.  Bryana truly didn’t seem to mind.  Cody and Bryana even started inviting her to join them on their periodic date nights, and she always accepted when she possibly could.  The three of them had great fun watching the reactions of others when the two women would both openly flirt with Cody or vice-versa.  While Alyssa still realized it would be a lot of work and a lot of lost sleep at first, she had to admit she was actually looking forward to being mom to eight children.  It was her lifelong dream to have a huge brood to care for.

Eventually the question the adults had all been anticipating came up.  One afternoon, Bryana was in the family room watching the triplets while Alyssa made dinner in the kitchen.  While Bryana couldn’t do much physically, she could be a lookout for Alyssa, calling out to her if she needed to come and deal with some situation involving the kids. Anyway, little Ian came up to her and asked, Aunt Bryana, how come you don’t have arms or legs?  Bryana gave him the prepared answer.  Well, people come in lots of different sizes and shapes and colors.  My shape doesn’t have arms or legs.  Ian seemed satisfied with that answer and resumed playing.

But little Jazmyn, overhearing this dialogue, had a related question.  Aunt Bryana, how come you have such a big tummy?  Hmmm, they hadn’t prepared an answer for this question, so Bryana would have to wing it.  She wasn’t going to lie, because they’d learn the truth soon enough.  She answered, Because there are babies growing in there. When they get big enough, they’ll come out and then they’ll be your little brothers and sisters.  This definitely got Jazmyn’s attention and led to more questions.  How did they get in there?, she asked.  Did you eat them?  Bryana laughed.  No, I didn’t eat them.  There’s a special way they get in there when they’re very, very tiny.  Then once they’re inside, they start growing.  How will they get out?, she asked.  When they’re big enough, they’ll let me know they’re ready.  Then I’ll go to the hospital, and a doctor will help them get out.  Jazmyn nodded in approval.  So far, so good, Bryana thought.  She’s not asking follow-up questions to my rather incomplete answers. Jazmyn still had more questions, though. How many babies are in there? Bryana replied, There are five of them, three girls and two boys.  Will the girls be my sisters?  Yes, honey. The girls will be your little sisters, and the boys will be your little brothers.  Jazmyn didn’t care about the brothers.  The two she already had were plenty enough.  Then she asked, Was I in your tummy before I came out?  Yes, you were.  You and Ian and Kaden were all in my tummy together.  All of that made perfect sense to Jazmyn, and she had no more questions. Alyssa had overheard their conversation, and she poked her head out of the kitchen, caught Bryana’s eye, and smiled and gave her the thumbs up sign.  Bryana had handled that as well as anyone could have.

But the next day, Jazmyn tucked in her shirt and then stuffed a few of her smaller baby dolls down it.  Alyssa asked her what was in her shirt, and she replied that she had babies in her tummy like Aunt Bryana.  Alyssa, while not exactly approving of this, didn’t react negatively, either.  She and Bryana had played that same game all the time when they were kids.  They had both been somewhat obsessed about having lots of babies and being mommies.  Funny how things turn out, Alyssa thought to herself.  And it looks like maybe the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, either.

Eventually the day came when the unborn babies did let Bryana know they were ready come out, right on their due date.  In three successive pregnancies carrying three or more babies, Bryana had carried all of them to at least full term.  It was almost completely unheard of for that to ever happen, and here she was rocking it for the third time.  Bryana took great pride in her ability to deliver full-term healthy multiples.  She was the fertility goddess.  She was Super Mom.  But there was no time to waste.  This time there was no warning before the contractions began at five minute intervals, and her previous deliveries had taken place after rather short periods of labor.  It was early evening, shortly after dinner.  Cody called Dr. Hopkins, got Bryana in the van, and took off for the hospital.  Alyssa called her mother to come over and watch the triplets so she could join them.

The triplets had observed the commotion but didn’t really know what was going on.  While waiting for her mother to arrive, Alyssa sat down with them and explained. Remember when Aunt Bryana said that the babies would let her know when they were ready to come out?  The boys nodded their heads, while Jazmyn said, Yeah. Alyssa continued.  Well, they just let her know.  Jazmyn asked, Did Daddy take Aunt Bryana to the hospital? Allyssa replied, That’s right, Jazmyn. Now, Grandma is going to come over to watch you and put you to bed when it’s time.  I want you all to be good for her.  Mommy is going to go to the hospital, too, to watch the babies being born. What’s born?, Jazmyn asked.  Born means when a baby comes out of its mommy’s tummy, Alyssa said.  She immediately regretted using the word “mommy”.  But you’re the mommy, Kaden pointed out.  Are there babies in your tummy, too?  Rut-roh, Alyssa thought.  She’d have to perform damage control now.  No, honey, she said.  Aunt Bryana and I are both mommies, but in different ways.  She’s the mommy who grows babies in her tummy, and I’m the mommy who takes care of them after they come out.  Just like I take care of you.  That seemed to satisfy their curiosity, and there were no more questions.

When Alyssa’s mother Giselle arrived, she quietly told her, I may have confused the kids just now.  I inadvertently referred to Bryana as a mommy, and they called me out on it.  I tried to explain to them that we’re both mommies in different ways.  I didn’t actually say that Bryana is their birth mother, but I think they probably figured it out anyway.  What do you want me to say if they start asking questions?, inquired Giselle.  Be truthful, but don’t volunteer any more information than necessary to satisfy them. That’s all I can tell you.  Sorry!  I gotta run now.  Bryana probably won’t be in labor very long.  Bye, kids!, Alyssa called out.  Be good for Grandma!

As Giselle tucked the three littles into bed that evening, Jazmyn asked her, Grandma, is Aunt Bryana our mommy? Giselle was unsure how to answer this. She’s one of your mommies, yes, Giselle replied.  Is Mommy our mommy, too?  Yes, dear, that’s right.  That was enough to clear things up for little Jazmyn.  Grandma confirmed what she thought she understood from what Mommy had told them earlier and what Aunt Bryana had said in the past.  She and her brothers and the new babies had two mommies, one who grew them in her tummy and one who took care of them.  Giselle was relieved there were no more questions.

Meanwhile, Bryana’s contractions were three minutes apart when she and Cody arrived at the hospital.  They checked her dilation and told her it wasn’t going to be much longer before she gave birth.  They wasted no time getting her to a delivery room.  One of the nurses had once heard Dr. Hopkins refer to Bryana as a fertility goddess, and she spread the word to the rest of the maternity ward.  The goddess is back and about to deliver quints in delivery room 2.  Most everyone knew what she was talking about without further explanation.  Dr. Hopkins arrived with little time to spare.

As the first baby entered the birth canal, a familiar feeling came over Bryana.  She was going to orgasm while giving birth again.  Yes!, she thought.  I was really hoping this would happen again!  She called out to anyone within earshot, This is going to be another fun delivery, everybody!  I’m feeling really turned on!  Immediately she began moaning in pleasure.  One of the nurses who had witnessed Bryana’s previous orgasmic delivery slipped out to round up anyone available who had not had that privilege.

It was just before the first baby was born that Alyssa arrived.  She had not attended the delivery of the quads, and so walked in on Bryana screaming, Oh God!, over and over again and had no idea what was happening.  She assumed Bryana was in great pain, and it was very concerning that no one seemed to be taking it seriously.  It looked like people were smiling under their surgical masks.  What’s happening?, she asked in a concerned voice to a nurse who was standing back and observing.  She’s having an orgasmic birth, the nurse replied.  She’s having the time of her life.  Alyssa relaxed.  She had forgotten about hearing of Bryana doing that last time.   Bryana’s screams changed to, Yes!  Yes!  Yessss!!! as she simultaneously made the final push and reached climax.  First one’s a girl, announced Dr. Hopkins.

The scene repeated itself as Bryana pushed out the remaining four babies over the course of the next hour. Orgasm after orgasm, baby after baby. Her labor had lasted a total of two hours from start to finish.  New to the world were a 9 lb. 12 oz. girl that they named Paige; a 10 lb. 2 oz. boy named Quentin; a 9 lb. 14 oz. girl named Rowena; a 10 lb. girl named Sophia; and a 10 lb. 4 oz. boy named Trevor.  That’s 50 pounds of just babies, doubling the previous world record for the combined weight of newborn quintuplets.  All five were bigger than any of the previous seven.

Oh, God, that was so amazing!, said Bryana when it was over.  I love orgasming while giving birth!  There’s nothing on earth like it!  It makes me want to have a hundred more!  Then the remaining nurses in the room observing began softly chanting, We are not worthy, we are not worthy.  What are they saying?, Bryana asked Cody.  They’re saying they’re not worthy.  To be in your presence, I guess.  They’re worshiping the legendary fertility goddess.  Bryana looked over at the nurses and smiled and waved weakly. As great as it felt, it was exhausting to birth five babies.  Alyssa leaned in close to Bryana, and with a smile said, Just so you know, I’m not raising a hundred more of your babies.

Dr. Hopkins took DNA samples from each of the babies to see if any of them were identical.  It turned out that Rowena and Sophie, as they planned to call her, were in fact identical.  Bryana had released four eggs when she had become pregnant this time.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch

Alyssa and Cody knew they would need a lot of help with five newborns, and they were smart enough to line it up in advance, rather than waiting to be overwhelmed.  Early on, they’d need round-the-clock help, and they knew it would be tough to find anyone who’d want to take the graveyard shift. They discussed this with Nicole and Alyssa’s mother Giselle, and came up with a plan they thought could work. Nicole would lead the day shift and Cody the evening shift.  They’d hire someone to work with Nicole during the day, and Alyssa’s father Vance would help Cody in the evening.  Alyssa and Giselle would cover the overnight.  They’d get additional help on the weekends when Nicole and the other day shift worker would be off.  Alyssa hired Wendy, another former co-worker from her day care center days, to work with Nicole on weekdays.

More complicated was when and how the babies would be fed.  It was a given they’d have to be put on staggered feeding schedules.  The big unknown was whether Bryana could produce enough milk for five babies, but even if she could, would she be up to task of nursing babies practically 24 hours a day?  Granted, all she had to do was be there; she could even sleep through the feedings if she was so inclined.  Other family and help would be the ones holding the babies as they fed. Nevertheless, it was a lot to ask of anyone.  Everyone agreed that they would need to get the babies used to taking formula right away, so that they had options and the entire process wouldn’t be completely dependent on one person.  Bryana would nurse all five babies as much as practical, but none of them would get breast milk exclusively.  They’d have to work out the exact details on the fly as they discovered what worked well and what didn’t.

Alyssa, Cody, and even Bryana had developed a real team mentality about the challenges, hard work, and lack of sleep that they faced.  Alyssa was a completely different person than she was months earlier when she learned she’d be raising quintuplets.  She was now confident and determined and ready to do this.  Bryana was likewise determined to not be sidelined by post-partum depression and become a burden when there was so much work to be done. She very much wanted to help as much as she could, meaning in other ways besides just being the milk supply.  She knew she could make a significant contribution by keeping an eye on the triplets, who were now four years old, while the other adults were attending to the newborns, and everyone agreed that would be a big help.

Cody wasn’t exaggerating much when he said they were going to need a bus.  They had no trouble carting the triplets around in their standard minivan or even in Bryana’s wheelchair-accessible minivan, but now they’d need to be able to transport five newborns, three small children, and enough adults to supervise them.  Cody traded in his sedan for a full-sized 15-passenger van, the largest they make short of a small bus.

As the due date approached, Dr. Hopkins told Bryana and Cody that the hospital had informed her that they would want to issue a press release about the birth of quintuplets, since it is such a rare occurrence, and that the media would then want to interview them on camera.  Of course they needed permission from the parents to do that.  Dr. Hopkins told the hospital representative that there were extenuating circumstances that might make the parents unwilling to agree to the publicity, but that she would discuss the matter with them.  Bryana and Cody looked at each other, stunned.  They hadn’t considered this.  They certainly did not want to do anything to bring to light Bryana’s elective amputations, but they also recognized that the birth of naturally-conceived and record-breaking birth weight quintuplets was newsworthy, and refusing to cooperate at all with the press might be counter-productive to their desire to lead private lives.  They decided that they needed time to think about it and discuss it with other family members.

After considering various options, everyone collectively decided that the press should not be allowed to see or interview Bryana or the triplets, and that there would be no mention made of Bryana’s disability or physical limitations, nor of her previous surrogate pregnancy.  When asked for the reason why access to Bryana was not being granted, they would decline to provide one other than that it was at her request.  They would take a still photo or two of Bryana in her hospital bed after the birth of the babies, only showing her from the shoulders up, which they would distribute to the press and allow them to use.  Cody, Alyssa, and the grandparents would make themselves available for interviews and would show off the babies.  They would explain that Alyssa will help her sister and brother-in-law care for the quints just as she had done for the triplets, and not elaborate further about her role.  Dr. Hopkins would be authorized to comment on Bryana’s condition and health only with regards to the conception, pregnancy, delivery, and recovery, both for this pregnancy as well as her first one where she had the triplets.  This would exclude any mention of the orgasms she experienced during delivery, of course.  Dr. Hopkins would also be free to discuss the condition and health of the babies. Nicole, and now also Wendy, had already signed non-disclosure agreements and would not be permitted to talk to the press.  Would this satisfy the press and the public and would they respect their privacy? Only time would tell.

Once the quints were born, the hospital issued its press release the following morning, and a press conference was scheduled that afternoon at the hospital.  All of the local news outlets were represented with reporters, and in the case of the TV stations, cameramen.  The press conference went pretty much according to plan, with Cody, Alyssa, the grandparents, and Dr. Hopkins all speaking and taking questions. The questions directed towards the family members mostly had to do with their emotional states, how they planned to care for so many babies, and personal questions about Bryana, which they answered selectively.  The questions for Dr. Hopkins were mostly related to how one woman could possibly naturally conceive eight babies in only two pregnancies, carry all of them to full-term, and in the case of the quints, double the world record for combined newborn weight.  Of course, the press very much wanted to see the babies, which they accommodated, and to see and interview Bryana, which they adamantly refused.

After the press conference ended, the press was escorted to the hallway outside the newborn nursery, where they could look through the window.  Cody, Alyssa, and Giselle went into the nursery and brought the babies to the window so the press could get a better look.  The hospital had the foresight to post a guard in front of Bryana’s room to stop any unauthorized person from entering, and the guard successfully repelled several attempts, including one instance where a female reporter posed as a nurse.  The hospital also blocked calls to Bryana’s room, and Bryana had her own phone turned off. The press was extremely frustrated at being prevented from getting to Bryana, and even more so that no real reason was given.
