Chapter 9: Likes and dislikes, hopes and dreams

Brad was over at Tessa’s again, and they were still very much in the “get to know you” phase.

Tessa:  I told my co-worker the other day that you and I had a lot in common.  I was thinking mostly of gigantomastia, but besides that, I’m wondering how much we do actually have in common.

Brad:  Well, let’s see…  We’re both Christians.  We both recently started going to the same church.  We both have master’s degrees and are just starting our careers.  I assume we’re close to the same age.  We both come from small towns.

Tessa:  I’m 25.

Brad:  I’m 26, so close enough.

Tessa:  I suppose that’s a good start.  I was thinking more of outlooks on life, hopes and dreams for the future, likes and dislikes, that kind of thing.

Brad:  Let’s start with likes and dislikes.  That’s easier.

Tessa:  Well, I know we like the same kind of pizza.

Brad:  Actually, I was being nice and trying to keep things simple, and just went along with that chicken and veggie pizza.  I like mine loaded with deli meat.

Tessa:  I’m sorry. We could have ordered a meat lover’s. I wouldn’t have minded.

Brad:  It’s okay. I don’t mind chicken and veggies, either.  I just like deli meat better. How about next time we get a supreme?  Those have lots of deli meat and veggies.

Tessa:  Deal. Hey, how ‘bout if we take turns suggesting a category and we’ll each say our favorites.  I’ll go first.

Tessa:  Ice cream flavor, go!  Brad: Pistachio.  Tessa:  Triple chocolate fudge brownie.

Brad:  Music genre. Tessa:  Country.  Brad: Classic rock.

Tessa:  Movie genre. Brad:  Action adventure.  Tessa: Romantic comedy.

Brad:  Spectator sport.  Tessa: Figure skating.  And baseball.  Brad:  Football and basketball.

Tessa:  Rainy day activity.  Brad: Video games.  Tessa:  Movies or reading a book.

Brad:  Participatory sport:  Tessa: [laughing] Do I look like an athlete to you?  Brad: Okay, any physical activity then. Tessa:  I like roller blading; I just need someone to help me get them on and off.  What about you?  Brad: Basketball.

Tessa:  Video game genre:  Brad: Shoot ‘em ups.  Tessa:  Role-playing games.

Brad:  Cookout food: Tessa:  Chicken breast.  Brad: Steak.  Or burgers.

Tessa:  Dinner fare: Brad:  Steak or ribs.  Tessa: Chicken Cordon Bleu, or really anything with chicken.

Brad:  Light dinner fare:  Tessa: Sushi or salad.  Brad:  Tacos or buffalo wings.

Tessa:  Comfort food. Brad:  Mac and cheese.  Tessa: Pancakes with berries and whipped cream.

Brad:  We’re not doing very well, are we?  I don’t think we’ve found anything we both like yet.

Tessa:  Well, most of the differences are just predictable gender-based preferences. And I don’t hate any of the things you’ve said.  They’re just not my first choices.  Well, except playing basketball.

Brad:  I guess you’re right.  And I don’t hate any of the things you said, either.  But I’ll confess; I have a low tolerance for rom-coms.

Tessa:  I think we’ll be able to find compromises, like we just did with the pizza. Otherwise, we can take turns choosing if we’re doing something together, or we can each do our own thing.  There’s no reason why we have to have the same flavor of ice cream.

Brad:  Yeah, none of those differences seem like big deals to me.

Tessa:  So what about the more difficult topics?  Like careers and marriage and kids and stuff like that.

Brad:  Whew. We sure are moving fast in this relationship, aren’t we?

Tessa:  I guess I’m not asking about marriage to and kids with me, necessarily.  Just your thoughts in general.

Brad:  Okay. Obviously, I’m career-focused. I’m working on my Ph.D. in order to advance in my field.  I’ve always assumed I would get married and have kids.  Actually, I want to get married and have kids.

Tessa:  How many kids?

Brad:  I don’t know. Two or three, I guess.

Tessa:  How do you feel about your wife having a career vs. her staying home once you have kids together?

Brad:  It would be mostly up to her, I think.  We would have to work it out way ahead of time and have a plan, so we didn’t get ourselves into a situation where she wants to stay home but we can’t afford to give up her paycheck, or where we’re paying more in child care expenses that she’s earning.

Brad:  What about you?  It’s not fair that I’m the only one answering here.  I know you want to get married; you said so in church that day.  But what else?

Tessa:  Well, I didn’t go the trouble of getting all this education just to be a stay-home mom. I get a lot of personal satisfaction from my job and can’t imagine giving that up.  But once I have kids, assuming I do have kids, I know my life can’t always be just about what I want – I’ll have to take what’s best for them into account as well.  Maybe that means being a stay-home mom for a while.  Maybe it means only working part-time.

Brad:  So you do want to have kids, I assume.  How many?

Tessa:  Yes, I’d like to have a kid or kids someday.  I don’t know how many.  I’d have to play that by ear.  Have one and see how it goes.  I would think I’d want at least a second one, though.

Brad:  What about your career vs. your husband’s career?  If he had a great opportunity in another city, would you be willing to quit your job and move, or would you tell him he has to turn it down?

Tessa:  Whether to move to another city involves a lot more considerations that just how it would affect my career.  I’m not real close to my family, but they’re still my family, and they’re only two hours away now.  I would have to not only leave my job and family, I would be leaving behind friends and support systems and everything familiar.  Depending on the ages of our kids, they might have to leave everything they know behind, too.  But to answer your question, again, it would be selfish to only think about what was best for me.  It would likewise be selfish of my husband to only think about what was best for him and his career.  I would hope that we would talk it all through and jointly reach a decision that was best for both of us as well as any kids we might have.

Tessa:  My professional training has taught me this about marriage, or really, any relationship: If one spouse is habitually selfish, the marriage is in serious trouble.  If both are, it’s doomed.  The best marriages are partnerships, or teams, where both parties act in the best interest of the whole, but without feeling taken advantage of.  They’re teammates with a common objective, not rivals or adversaries.  If the team wins, then the individual teammates also win.  This requires open and honest communication, really hearing what each other is saying, and sometimes negotiation and compromise.  If both partners make the other’s needs equal to their own, the marriage will seem fair.  But if both partners can put the other’s needs first, without either of them being made to feel like a doormat, they will each feel privileged to be in that relationship.  That’s the kind of marriage I want.

Brad:  What you say makes a lot of sense.  I never really thought about it like that.

Tessa:  You might not have thought about it, but I think you practice it without realizing it. Take the example of the pizza. You put my preference above your own. You didn’t even mention that you had a different preference to try to get your way or make me feel guilty about getting my way.  It just came naturally to you to do that.  I think our relationship, as new as it is, has a lot of potential to be a great one.

Brad:  I suppose you’re right.  On both points.

Brad:  [with a mischievous smile]  For a girl with enormous boobs, you sure are smart!

Brad immediately regretted saying that.  He had no idea whether Tessa would think it was funny or take offense.

Tessa playfully smacked Brad on the leg.

Tessa:  [also smiling and pretending to be offended]  Now just what is that supposed to mean?!?!

Brad:  [laughing] I’m just messing with you!  But I’m glad you can take a joke.

Brad:  [turning serious]  Tessa, I love you.

Tessa:  I love you too, Brad.

Chapter 10:  Taming Zander

Brad avoided engaging Zander for the next couple of weeks.  He didn’t go out of his way to avoid him, but rather just ignored him when he did see him.  Zander made jokes about it the first few times, but Brad wouldn’t take the bait.  Zander soon realized that he had somehow crossed a line, Brad was seriously miffed, and cracking jokes only made it worse.  But Zander didn’t know how else to act around Brad, so he was just silent.

Brad just didn’t want to deal with Zander.  Throughout their friendship, they constantly teased and insulted each other and made crass remarks about each other’s love interests and tastes in women.  But Brad was not going to tolerate any of that regarding Tessa.  He already thought of her as his future wife, even if that idea had not yet percolated up to the level of conscious thought.  But Brad did know he respected her too much to permit Zander to talk about her like he had.

If they had any hopes in patching up their friendship, Brad realized he was going to have to break the ice, and he was going to have to make it clear to Zander that the rules had changed; Tessa was off-limits for any jokes or crude remarks.  So, one afternoon, Brad invited Zander to join him for a few beers at a bar near the university.  They made polite small talk for a few minutes until they had been served.  Then Brad got to the matter at hand.

Brad:  Look, Zander, I’m sorry I snapped at you the last time we spoke.  I owe you an explanation about what’s going on.  But I need you to really listen.  No jokes, no wise cracks, no crude remarks, no laughing, no smirks, none of that.  Just listen.

Zander:  Okay.

Brad:  This girl I’m in a relationship with now… her name is Tessa.  We have gotten very serious about each other very quickly.  She’s a nice, sweet girl who’s in many ways had a difficult life, but she’s come through the other side not only amazingly strong and resilient, but also kind and caring. She is beautiful, smart, and successful, and she has her head on straight.  She is a class act.  I have only the utmost respect for her.  A girl like her would normally be way out of my league, but she seems to be as much in love with me as I am with her.

Brad:  So the usual way we talk about girls just isn’t going to cut it anymore.  I need you to respect that, and treat Tessa with the respect she deserves.  Tessa is hereby off limits to any jokes or crude remarks.  I’m also done putting up with that kind of talk about my past girlfriends and taste in women.  None of that is funny anymore.  Are you with me so far?

Zander:  Yeah.

Brad:  There’s something else I need to tell you about her, because you’ll find out for yourself sooner or later, and it’s better that you’re prepared.  But once we leave this bar, this subject will become forever off-limits as well.  Tessa has absolutely ginormous breasts.  Way bigger than those on any girl I’ve ever dated before, and they’re real.  They’ve been the reason for most of the problems she’s had in life, so they’re no joking matter.  But despite that, she says she’s keeping them.

Brad had intentionally avoided using clinical terms to describe Tessa. Zander had no idea about Brad’s family, and Brad wanted to keep it that way.  He just thought Brad was into big boobs.  Using big words and medical jargon would make it sound like Brad knew a lot more about them than he was letting on.

Zander was expecting Brad to burst into laughter and say, “Gotcha! Just kidding!”, but that didn’t happen. Instead, Brad anticipated Zander’s thoughts and addressed them.

Brad:  If you’re waiting for a punch line, there isn’t one.  I’m being completely straight with you about this.  Now, do you have any questions?

Zander:  Only one, and I mean no disrespect by asking.  How big are we talking?

Brad:  Beach ball-sized.

Zander:  Beach balls don’t come in a standard size.

Brad:  True.  On the smaller end of the beach ball scale, I would think.  I could say large watermelons, but those don’t have a standard size, either.  Quite a bit bigger than basketballs.  I don’t know what else to compare them to.

Zander:  She sounds like the girl of your dreams.

Brad:  She really is, but her breasts are only one part of why that’s true.  So, are we cool?

Zander:  Yeah. I understand, and I’ll respect your wishes.

Brad:  Thanks. I appreciate that.

Zander:  One more question:  Where on earth did you find this girl?  Did you say church?

Brad:  Believe it or not, yes, in church.  I decided to start going to church again, and there she was.  Now let’s get another round.

Chapter 11: Settling into a routine

Brad and Tessa were together every chance they had.  It wasn’t nearly as often as they would have liked, though, due to Brad’s need to study and develop his dissertation proposal, as well as Tessa’s work schedule, since she did have some evening appointments with clients.  Tessa kept Brad on track however, refusing to see him when she knew he needed to study. She knew how important his education was to his career, and she did not want to derail him from that by being a distraction.

Tessa didn’t like being limited by her physique, but neither was she fond of the stares and whispers she always got when out in public.  Brad searched for things to do where that would be kept to a minimum without Tessa feeling like he was embarrassed to be seen with her, which of course was the furthest thing from the truth.  He found small, intimate restaurants and outdoor activities off the beaten path.  They would bring Tessa’s dog Samson with them when they could, as he encouraged people to keep their distance.  They sometimes did things with other couples in the church singles group.  But otherwise, most of their time together was at Tessa’s place.  They’d cook or get take-out and watch movies together.  But mostly they talked and cuddled.  They never ran out of things to talk about.

They didn’t move in together, though, or even spend the night together, because from their mutual Christian upbringings and current church attendance, they both knew it to be wrong.  They were both keenly aware that it had to have been God who arranged for them to meet and fall in love, and they didn’t want to disappoint him.  As much as she loved Brad, Tessa was not about to give in to temptation and somehow ruin everything.  As much as he would have liked to push the issue, Brad respected Tessa too much to do that, and also did not want to sabotage this great thing they had.  The stakes were too high, as they both were convinced that they would never, ever find someone else as wonderful as the one they already had.

Since Tessa’s testimony, people became much more accepting of her at church, and that continued to improve, despite the brief setback when she started sitting close to Brad.  Everyone mostly thought it was cute that they were obviously so much in love, and the wives who had been worried about Tessa stealing their husbands were relieved that Brad had entered the picture.

Chapter 12:  Let’s get physical

(This chapter is more risqué than the others.  If that bothers you, just skip it.)

The few times Tessa had been in relationships that moved beyond kissing and innocent hugging, her chest became the sole focus of the guy she was with, to the exclusion of everything else.  This always left Tessa feeling manipulated and used, believing the only reason they pretended to be interested in her was to get to her breasts.  That was always a deal-breaker for her, and so once that happened the relationship was over.

So Tessa was more than a little concerned about what would happen when her relationship with Brad reached that point.  He was much more of a gentleman than anyone she’d ever gotten involved with, and he didn’t seem obsessed with her breasts.  Still, though.  It could go one of three ways, and two of them were bad.  He could really be like all the others, and then this wonderful relationship with what seemed like the perfect man would be over.  Or, maybe he just liked the way she looked because it was familiar, but otherwise had no interest in her boobs, or worse, they actually turned him off.  That would be a deal breaker, too.  She had to know which it was before she got any more emotionally invested in Brad.

So, one evening when they were on the sofa kissing and hugging, she decided it was time to find out where Brad really stood.

Tessa:  Brad? I need to know what you really think about my boobs.

Danger, Will Robinson!, Brad thought to himself.  He knew he was about to step into a minefield.

Brad:  What do you mean?

Tessa:  Well, I know you’ve said things like they’re normal to you and all, and you never leer at me, and I appreciate all of that.  But do they turn you on?  Turn you off? Or are you neutral and just consider them part of me, like, say, my elbows?

Brad couldn’t tell if this was a trick question, but he knew he needed to proceed very carefully.  He knew that “turn off” had to be a wrong answer, but otherwise wasn’t sure what Tessa wanted to hear.  He decided the only way to answer was truthfully; he just needed to choose his words carefully and hope for the best.  Brad took a deep breath and exhaled.

Brad:  I’ve told you that they’re normal to me, and I’m comfortable with them, and things like that.  I needed to tell you those things, and I knew you needed to hear them, because you’ve never heard them from anyone else.  It’s what makes me different than all the other guys, and right for you.  And every word of that was the absolute truth.  For the same reasons, I’ve always looked at you like a person instead of a sex object and treated you with utmost respect.

Brad:  But what I haven’t really made clear is that I’m a normal guy, too.  I’m turned on by breasts like most all guys are.  I just prefer them very, very big.  By the way, if that seems wrong because my mom and sisters have huge boobs, consider this:  Tons of guys with moms and sisters with normal-sized boobs are turned on by normal-sized boobs, and no one thinks anything of it.  Anyway, I downplayed that because I knew it wasn’t going to get me anywhere with you.

Brad:  But since you’ve asked, I’ll be totally honest with you.  I think your rack is amazing!  I admire it all the time.  I’m always hoping I’ll get to see some cleavage, and I love watching your boobs wobble when you move.  I just know how to get an eyeful without you noticing, by not focusing my eyes, by using my peripheral vision, and tricks like that.  I’m so lucky to have you for a girlfriend, and I’m so proud that I can call you that, yes because of your smarts and toughness and all of that, but certainly not in spite of your boobs.  They are the icing on the cake!

Brad:  If that was the wrong answer, well, I understand if you want to break up with me.

Tessa was impressed that Brad was willing to be honest even when it might cost him dearly.

Tessa:  [smiling]  Relax, fool, that was the best answer you could have possibly given.  I’m at the point in my recovery where I’ve come to appreciate my boobs, even starting to take some pride in them.  So, I’m really glad to hear you do, too.  It makes things a lot easier if we’re on the same page.

Tessa decided it was time to make the first move.  She had never done that before in her life, as the boys had always taken the initiative, usually before she was ready for them to do so. She didn’t want to throw herself at him, or pressure him to do something he didn’t want to do.  So she just extended an invitation to see how he’d react.

Tessa:  You can touch them if you want to.

Brad acted like he didn’t hear her and just resumed kissing and hugging her for a few more minutes.  All this time, Tessa became more and more worried that maybe he hadn’t been honest, or was actually intimidated by her size, or who knows what else.  But then she finally felt his right hand caressing her left breast through her bra and top.  Okay, Tessa thought, so far so good.  He accepted the invitation, but didn’t rush into it, and hasn’t gone beyond what she gave him permission to do by trying to remove her top.  And he was giving her boob just the right amount of attention. After a while, Tessa shifted positions so that Brad could more easily reach her right boob with his left hand. A minute or two later, he did just that, while continuing uninterrupted on the left one.

Tessa:  That feels nice.

Brad:  Yeah, it sure does.

And so they continued in that way for quite a while.  Tessa continued to think that Brad was giving her breasts just the right amount of attention, and she was pleased that he made no move to go any further.  Eventually, Tessa turned facing away from Brad to see what he would do.  Without hesitation, Brad shifted his attention from Tessa’s front to her back, and proceeded to give her a shoulder and back rub. He made no further attempt to touch her breasts, obviously getting the message that the window of opportunity had been closed.

Tessa couldn’t have been happier about how that went.  Brad had passed yet another test with flying colors. Tessa made a mental note to wear lower necklined and clingier tops when she knew she and Brad would be alone together.

Meanwhile, Brad was on cloud nine.  He was thrilled to find out that, though Tessa wasn’t easy, neither was she a prude.  Knowing she had been sexually abused in the past, he’d been concerned that she would have hang-ups about being touched intimately.  That did not seem to be the case.  But he was careful not to cross the boundaries she had established, not wanting to trigger her.

In their subsequent make-out sessions, Brad assumed that permissions that had been given previously were still in effect unless told otherwise, and as far as Tessa was concerned, they were.  But he never rushed things, never pushed the boundaries, and always took the hint when Tessa wasn’t interested, not ready, or had had enough.  Brad was always perfectly happy to give Tessa physical attention in any number of ways.  To Tessa, this was just how it should be, and it made her deeply happy.

Some time later, Brad decided it was time to turn the tables.

Brad:  Tessa, it’s my turn to have a question for you about your boobs.  When I’m fondling them, does it turn you on?  Turn you off?  Or are you neutral and think it feels like I were fondling your elbows?

Tessa:  [laughing] Oh, it’s most definitely a turn on.

Brad:  It sure seems like it.  But I need to know if really is, or you’re just acting like it is for my benefit.

Tessa:  My boobs are actually quite erogenous.  They love the attention you lavish on them.

Brad:  I’m really glad to hear it.  It makes things a lot easier if we’re on the same page.
