Chapter 5: Getting acquainted

Brad agonized over how soon he should contact Tessa.  It was completely up to him, because he had her number but she didn’t have his. The social event was on a Friday evening, and it was now noon on Saturday.  Brad felt that the stakes were much higher to get this just right than they’d ever been in his life.  Though he had dated a number of girls and young women, all of them big-busted, none of them ever seemed like they were “the one” as much as Tessa.

Tessa was going through much the same thought process.  She wondered how soon she’d hear from Brad, if at all.  Would be weird to see him in church on Sunday if he hadn’t yet contacted her?  If he hadn’t, would he even be there at all?  Would she ever see him again?  If he texted her, how long should she wait to reply?  If he called her, should she pick up or let it go to voice mail?  Tessa also mused that it was critical to not mess this up, because he very well could be her Mr. Right.

Tessa had no shortage of guys wanting to date her, but nothing had ever lasted very long.  She had had her fill of creeps, weirdos, and perverts.  The normal guys she liked never reciprocated.  It seemed that for anyone to be interested in her, they had to be turned on by her unique anatomy, but anyone who did that was bad news.  Brad was the first guy who had shown an interest in her who wasn’t any of those things.  At least she didn’t think he was.  Her entire impression of him was based on what was only a brief conversation the night before.

Brad could stand it no longer and texted Tessa shortly after 4 pm.  He immediately regretted it, certain that it was too soon.  But to his pleasant surprise, she replied almost immediately.  Tessa leaped in excitement when her phone pinged.  She abandoned any attempt at being coy and typed as fast as she could.

Brad:  Hey tessa, its brad. Enjoyed our conv last nite

Tessa:  Hey urself. me 2. I was hoping id hear from u

Brad:  I h8 texting. Mind if i call

Tessa:  Better yet y dont u come over. Do u like pizza

Brad:  Sure but im buying wut kind do u like

Tessa:  Just come over n well discuss. Sending addy

Tessa then texted her address and Brad told her he’d be over in an hour.  She couldn’t believe she just did that.  She barely knew him, and they had barely even started texting, and now he was on his way over at her invitation.  She was being such a schoolgirl!  Or maybe a fool.  Maybe he really was a creep, or worse.  Tessa spent the next hour second-guessing herself.  Meanwhile, Brad was doing the same exact thing.

Brad showed up at Tessa’s door shortly after 5 pm.  He didn’t like showing up empty handed, but they hadn’t settled the pizza question, and he had no idea what she liked or disliked, pizza or otherwise.  He rang the doorbell, and immediately a big dog began barking.  Moments later, Tessa opened the door, holding the collar of a large Doberman Pinscher.  She invited him in and explained how to make friends with Samson, the dog.  Tessa was dressed more casually than she did at church, and she was showing some cleavage.  A neckline like that would not be particularly revealing on a normally proportioned girl, but Tessa was anything but that.

Brad suggested that since he was paying for dinner, they could do better than pizza.  At the very least, maybe they could order Chinese.  Or have something fancier delivered.  Or they could go out to eat somewhere.  Tessa held up her hand to stop him.

Tessa:  You don’t understand.  I’m trying to make a good first impression on you, and I’ll just make a big mess trying to eat Chinese or whatever.  I have to hold the plate just under my chin when I’m eating or the food will get all over the front of me.  I stick out too far for it to fall back onto a plate on the table.  It takes one hand to hold the plate, so I only have one free hand to eat with.  A slice of pizza I can hold in one hand.

Brad mentally slapped his own head.  Of course he should have thought of that.  Though he had dated busty girls, he’d never gone out with anyone remotely as big up front as Tessa.  He recalled that his relatives were messy eaters for the same reason.  They usually ate using a bath towel as a bib.  But Brad understood why Tessa wasn’t comfortable doing that in front of him yet.

Brad:  Of course! I completely understand!  I don’t know what I was thinking.  Pizza it is, then.

They worked out what kind of pizza to get and from where and placed the order.  They then went to the living room.  In it were a large reclining chair and a sofa.  Brad figured he better take a seat on the sofa.  He hoped Tessa would, too.  But she went for the chair and sat in it with her feet curled up under her. Brad thought, This is good, too. This way I’m facing her and can take in all her beauty.  With her feet under her and her boobs resting on her lap, he could hardly tell she had legs. Samson lay on the floor in front of Tessa.  He clearly was protective of her.

Tessa:  So you said that gigantomastia runs in your family.  I’d love to hear more about them.

Brad:  Sure. Well, all of the women on my mother’s side of the family have gigantomastia.  That is, the daughters of women who have it.  If a woman with the condition has a son, his daughters won’t have it; they’ll be normal.  Also, about three-quarters of the children born to these women are girls.  This has been going on for many generations; no one really knows how far back.  These are clearly traits that are passed down from one generation of women to the next, but none of it makes any sense from what is known about genetics and human reproduction.  That’s why I got into the field of genetic research; I found the mystery to be fascinating and wanted to try to unravel it.

Tessa:  So you’re a geneticist, then?

Brad:  Yes, I guess I haven’t mentioned my career yet.  I completed my master’s at State University going on two years ago and am now working there researching genetics of the human breast.  Mostly we’re looking at how breast cancer sometimes has a hereditary component to it.  Maybe someday we can develop gene therapy that can stop that from being passed on from one generation to the next.

Brad:  I’m also working on my doctorate; you really need a Ph.D. in this field to be taken seriously.  I would like for my dissertation to be about the genetics of my own family.  So I’ve been studying my family’s genetics when I can, as research for my dissertation.  If I could discover a scientific basis for why my family is the way it is, it could revolutionize the field of genetics.

Tessa:  [frowning]  How do they feel about being your research subjects?

Brad:  Some are more on board than others.  The younger ones are mostly okay with it.  The older ones are more suspicious.  They’re afraid that somehow this is going to get out and their town will be overrun with gawkers.  But I’ve signed non-disclosure agreements with everyone who will cooperate, and it’s all being done anonymously.  Since it’s considered medical research, HIPAA privacy laws apply anyway.  But none of them would ever trust an outsider to do this research.  If it’s ever going to happen, it will have to be done by me.

Tessa:  [still frowning]  Yeah, I can understand their concerns.  So is that why you introduced yourself to me?  Are you wanting me to be your lab rat, too?

Brad:  Oh my gosh, no!  Please don’t think that for a minute!  I mean, I admit I’m more than a little bit curious about how you developed gigantomastia when none of your relatives have it, but that was not my motive at all!

Tessa:  [still frowning]  So what was your motive, then?

Brad:  Where do I start?  I think you’re stunningly beautiful, all of you, from top to bottom.  And you’re fascinating, as a human being, not as a test subject or a freak of nature.  You’re smart and confident and determined and brave, and you don’t let anything get in the way of what you want.  You’ve persevered through tremendous adversity and come out stronger from it. And now that I’ve met you, I know you’re also very personable and easy to talk to.  I think you’re amazing, and I had to try to get to know you.

Tessa:  [looking skeptical]  Not to mention that I have this ridiculously huge rack.  Do I remind you of your mother or something?

Brad:  How can I explain this?  I definitely appreciate your rack, I won’t deny it.  I know that lots of guys get turned on by that kind of thing, and I’m sure you’ve had to deal with more than your share of them.  But it’s different for me.  I’ve spent my life surrounded by women who look like you.  To me, it’s normal.  It’s feminine.  It’s how a woman *should* look.  To me, ordinary women just seem incomplete.  So, to quote a ballad from my parents’ generation, “I’ve been waiting for a girl like you to come into my life.”  And I can’t believe I’ve actually found you!

Tessa looked like she was about to cry.  She had not been thought of as normal looking by anyone since she was a child.  And Brad passed the creep test with flying colors.  She was on the verge of tears of joy, not sadness, but Brad didn’t know that. He was just starting to wonder if he should ask if she were okay, but then the doorbell rang, and Samson started barking.  “Pizza’s here!”

Chapter 6:  Love is kindled

Brad got up and took care of the pizza delivery.  While he was focused on that, Tessa tried to compose herself, but to no avail.  When Brad returned, he saw she was definitely crying.  Her face was red, tears were running down her checks, and she was blowing her nose.  He couldn’t see her mouth because of the tissue.  He didn’t know what to think, other than that he must have said something terribly wrong.

Brad:  [concerned]  What’s wrong, Tessa?  Whatever it was I said, I’m so sorry!

Tessa lowered the tissue, and he could see she was smiling, even laughing through her tears.

Tessa:  [teasingly]  Shut up, you fool!  These are happy tears!

Brad:  [confused]  I don’t understand.

Tessa:  [continuing to cry]  All my life, guys have either been repulsed by me or they’ve objectified me.  No one’s ever been able to see Tessa back there behind her enormous knockers, at least not anyone who wanted a relationship with me. And no one has ever called me normal looking before.  I so desperately wanted to be normal when I was a teen.  I begged God to make me normal, and all I ever heard back was just, “Trust me.”  I mean, I didn’t audibly hear that, but I got the message loud and clear.  And now, I finally understand.

Tessa:  [still crying]  We haven’t even known each other 24 hours, and I can already tell that you are different from anyone I’ve ever met, and I mean that in the best way possible.  I’m a package deal; if you can’t admire both my inner beauty and my outer beauty, you can’t have either.  And when I say admire my outer beauty, I don’t mean to be leered at or lusted after.  But I know in my heart of hearts that you understand that and that you really do appreciate all of me, inside and out.  I don’t know how, but I just know it.

Tessa:  [still crying]  You said you’ve been waiting for a girl like me to come into your life.  Well, I’ve been waiting for a man like you, too.  I didn’t know that it would ever happen.  And so I can’t believe I’ve found you, either! We barely know each other, and I know it’s way too early to say things like this, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt so loved and accepted and valued as I do right now.

Tessa got up out of her chair and started toward Brad with her arms extended for a hug, tears streaming down her face.  Brad rose to meet her halfway, and they stood in the middle of the living room and held each other tightly, with Tessa sobbing uncontrollably, for the longest time.  Tears of joy ran down Brad’s cheeks, too.  They both knew that their prayers had been heard and granted.

Eventually, Tessa ran out of tears to shed, but she was still very emotional, and continued to hold onto Brad for dear life.  But then she looked up at him lovingly, her face still red, her makeup gone, and her eyes still wet.

Tessa:  Our pizza’s gotten cold.

They both laughed.

Brad:  I know. I don’t care.

Tessa:  I don’t care, either.

Brad:  So what now? Are we in a relationship?

Tessa:  I would say so, yes.  At least I hope we are.

Brad:  Then it’s settled.  Hello, girlfriend.

Tessa:  I like the sound of that.  Hello, boyfriend.

Tessa:  You know, we haven’t even kissed yet.

Brad:  That’s easy enough to fix.

And still standing there, the two shared a long, passionate kiss.

The next morning, the Belhaven single adults were gathering for large group.  Tessa was one of the early ones to arrive, and the others noticed she seemed more animated that usual.  About five minutes later, Brad walked in.  He quickly scanned the room and spotted Tessa, and with a big smile made a beeline towards her.  Tessa saw him heading her way and her face immediately lit up.  For those observing, it was easy to tell something was up between those two.  Brad ditched his small group to attend Tessa’s, and they sat together.  Most people gave Tessa lots of personal space for obvious reasons, but Brad certainly wasn’t doing that, and Tessa didn’t seem to mind.  Later, they sat together in worship, again close enough together that people noticed. They thought they were being discreet, only holding hands when they thought no one was looking, but their proximity and body language and smiles gave them away.

The others in the singles group were mostly amused, but also a bit confused.  Both Tessa and Brad had been at the singles’ gathering just two nights ago, and other than a brief, seemingly normal conversation at the punch bowl, the two had not been near each other all evening.  Nor at any other time on the previous Sundays since Brad began attending. And of course, everyone in the congregation remembered Tessa saying just a few weeks earlier that she was cautious about relationships with men.  Some wondered whether she had really been sincere when she said that and all the rest about not being promiscuous.

Chapter 7: Tessa’s Monday

Tessa worked at the same mental health practice where she had been a client while a student at Capital Women’s College.  The therapist who had helped her so much, Amanda Davis, was one of the senior therapists there.  When Tessa began working there, Amanda became her friend and mentor.  Amanda was also a member of Belhaven Church, and in fact was the one who had invited Tessa to start attending.

Amanda was not the judgmental type, but her curiosity was getting the better of her.  Monday morning, when both Amanda and Tessa had a break between clients, Amanda walked into Tessa’s office and shut the door behind her.

Amanda:  [smiling]  All right, girl, spill it.  Who’s the guy you were sitting with in church, and what’s going on with you two?

Tessa:  [beaming]  He’s my new boyfriend!  His name is Brad Collins, and he’s been attending for a few weeks now.  In fact, his first Sunday was the one where I gave my testimony.  It turns out we have a lot in common, and we really hit it off well.

Amanda:  So you know him from somewhere else, then?  Or do you have mutual friends?

Tessa:  No.  In fact, we only met for the first time Friday evening.

Amanda:  [shocked]  Wait, what??? This isn’t like you at all! You’ve always been very cautious in your dealings with men, and for good reason.

Tessa:  Yes, you’re right.  It isn’t like me.  But this time is so different.  Brad is literally the answer to my prayers.  He’s perfect for me in every way, and I’m perfect for him in every way.  I can clearly see that it’s God who’s brought us together.

Amanda:  And you know all that after just one weekend?  Girl, your head’s not on straight!  I think you’re so blinded by infatuation, because it can’t be love this soon, that you’re imagining things.  You’ve got to slow this down and think it through.  I don’t want to see you get hurt.

Tessa:  Believe me, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

Amanda:  How do you know he’s not just a smooth-talking charmer who says all the right things but doesn’t mean any of them?  How do you know he’s not trying to scam you?  How do you know he’s not a stalker or a psychopath?  Come on, girl, use the brain God gave you!

Tessa:  He’s told me things that no one would ever think to make up.  He comes from a family of gigantomastia women.  He acts completely normal and natural around me, because being with someone like me *is* completely normal and natural to him.  Most women can’t do that without knowing me a long time, and I’ve never in my life met a straight man who could.  And he’s been nothing but a perfect gentleman.

Amanda:  [skeptical]  A whole family of women like you, huh?  Look, all I’m saying is to be careful.  It wouldn’t hurt to verify what he’s told you, and it might save you a lot of heartache or worse.

Tessa:  Yeah, you’re probably right.  It wouldn’t hurt any to check him out.

Tessa looked Brad up on social media and found him without much difficulty on a couple of different platforms.  He had a common name, but it helped that they lived in the same city, they had both friended a few of the same people at church, and his face was clearly visible in his profile photos.  She sent him friend requests, and it wasn’t long before her phone pinged with notifications that he had accepted her requests.

That evening, Tessa studied his profiles and did other online searches for him to see what she could learn.  Brad’s professional profile completely matched what he had told her, that he was a post-grad student and geneticist doing breast cancer research at State University.  His personal profiles all seemed to confirm what he had told her, as best as she could tell.  All of the photos of his female family members were only from the shoulders up. But that made sense, because that’s exactly what Tessa also did.  She saw that he was from a little town called Robertsville, and she searched to see what she could find out about it.  Nothing out of the ordinary, except that a few times she saw it referred to as Boobville, and she did find one obscure reference that mentioned rumors of some very top-heavy women living there.

Tessa saw that she and Brad also had a mutual friend named Claire Owens, whom Tessa had gone to grad school with.  Tessa messaged Claire.

Tessa:  Long time no c. Hope ur well. I c ur friends w brad collins. What can u tell me abt him?

Claire:  Way 2 long. Doin gr8. Went 2 college w brad. His frat n my sorority did stuff 2gether. Nice enuf guy. Y?

Tessa:  New relationship but i barely no him

Claire:  When he was with a girl she was usually uggo but always vry busty. Ur def his type but a major upgrade in so many ways. Seemed 2 always treat them well. No red flags. U could do a lot worse

Claire:  Had an obnoxious friend zander who was typical frat boy tho

Tessa:  Ok thx. That helps alot

Claire:  Np. Good luck with him

Tessa was satisfied.  Everything she could find out about Brad seemed to confirm what he had told her or that she had observed herself.  No red flags, Claire had said.

Chapter 8: Brad’s Monday

Brad had mid-term exams that week and really needed to study.  He had begged off from seeing Tessa on Sunday other than at church, but his plan to study the rest of the day was mostly an exercise in futility.  His mind kept drifting back to Tessa and all that had happened since he had met Tessa at the social on Friday.  He could not recall anyone ever affecting him this way before.

At work on Monday morning, he had to force himself to focus on the tasks at hand, and was mostly able to do it, but didn’t feel nearly as productive as usual.  Now, Brad was sitting in the break room eating lunch and trying to re-read one of his textbooks.  Again his mind drifted to Tessa.  Suddenly, a, familiar voice startled him back to reality.  It was his friend and co-worker Zander Harrison.

Zander:  Earth to Tit Man!  Come in, Tit Man!  Do you read?

Brad and Zander had known each other since they had both pledged to the same fraternity in college, and Zander was well aware of Brad’s taste in women.

Brad:  Hmmm?  Oh, hi Zan.  I didn’t see you there.

Zander:  Just Zan? When I call you Tit Man, you’re supposed to call me Zander-built!  It’s what we do.

Brad:  Sorry. I’m kind of preoccupied today. But could we please dispense with those stupid juvenile nicknames?

Zander:  Whatever, Tit Man.  You were really zoned out there.  And you’ve had this dopey grin on your face all morning.  You must’ve gotten lucky this weekend.

Brad:  Yes, I suppose you could say that.  I’m in a relationship with an amazing girl.

Zander:  I didn’t even know you were seeing anyone.  Did you get back together with that blonde chick with the fake tits in Human Resources?

Brad:  No, I haven’t even thought about her in months.  And we were never “together”.  I went out with her, what, twice I think.  You don’t know this girl.  I just met her myself.

Zander:  You just met her, and you’re already in a relationship?  She must really be hot in the sack to lure you in that fast!

Brad:  Would you just shut up?  She’s not that kind of girl.  And I don’t think I’m that kind of guy anymore, either.

Zander:  [pretending to be serious]  Who are you, and what have you done with Brad Collins?

Brad:  I’ve decided I’m done with bimbos.  And I’ve started going to church again.  That’s where we met.

Zander:  So another fat chick with greasy hair and no self-esteem like you used to date in college? I bet there’s plenty of those in church.

Brad:  She’s actually quite the opposite.  Tessa is beautiful and confident and successful.

Zander:  But she has big tits, right?  Or have you sworn off those, too?

Brad:  I’m not even going to dignify that with a response.

Zander:  [laughing]  Message received.  She has itty bitty titties.  So how did she con you into a relationship so fast?  Is this church one of those cults that brainwashes people?

Brad:  Nobody brainwashed or conned anyone.  You just don’t understand, and I don’t want to talk to you about it anymore if you can’t be more respectful.  Besides, I’ve got to study for my mid-term this evening.

Zander:  [looking confused]  Whatever, dude.

Zander got up and found another group of guys to sit with.  Brad turned his attention back to his textbook, and was finally able to focus.

Brad’s exam went much better than he thought it would.  He wasn’t preoccupied at all; instead, he felt energized and inspired.
