The sound of rustling plastic accompanied Chrissie as she went downstairs and into the living room. She placed a cardboard box on the table in front of the couch. Her roommate Anya just stared at the box.

“Where’d that come from?” asked Anya.

“Upstairs in the attic. I’m gonna get a stanley knife and see what’s in here.”

As Chrissie went into the kitchen, Anya just had a look at the box. There was a big pentagram, and a banner underneath it that said “MagiTech Inc”. This piqued Anya's interest, since she had interests in the supernatural, which one could figure out just by her gothic fashion sense.

After Chrissie came back with the knife, she cut the tape, and opened the box. Anya took one look, and didn’t know what to make of the contents.

“The heck are these?”, Anya asked, pulling out a few disparate items.

Chrissie pulled out some items and placed them on the table. Between the two of them, they found that the contents of the box contained what looked like white marbles with a black spot, pink plastic noses, red plastic lips, fake moustaches, and rubber slip-on ears.

“Where’s the big plastic potato that you attach them to?” Anya asked.

“I dunno, but these parts don’t seem to have the pointy bits you use to stick them on”, said Chrissie.

Anya placed her hand inside and rummaged through the plastic. She couldn’t feel anything even remotely close to a plastic potato through all the stuff. She pulled out her hand, and picked up one of the white marbles, which she guessed was supposed to represent eyeballs.

However, no sooner had she laid one of the plastic eyeballs on the palm of her hand, it seemed to sink into her palm before she could inspect it further.

“Hey, where’d it go?” she thought. “Wait…why is my vision going all funny, it’s…am I hallucinating? It’s like I’m seeing my own face.”

And then she stared at her palm and exclaimed out loud. “Oh my god.”

“What is it?” Chrissie asked.

Anya turned her hand so the palm was facing Chrissie. In the middle of it was a fully formed eye, complete with eyelid and eyelashes. It was the same green colour as Anya’s normal eyes, and was looking around.

“Oh my god…can you see out of that?”

“It’s weird, but yes I can. It’s like my field of vision has somehow increased…although I feel a little dizzy.”

“Can’t you take it out?”

“I don’t even know how it got in. I just put it on my palm and my hand somehow absorbed it. Wait…”

Anya placed her thumb and forefinger on the eye in her palm. She closed all three of her eyes and gave her third eye a little squeeze. She heard a small pop, and she opened her eyes. Her vision was back to normal, and so was her hand. In her other hand was a white marble with a black spot.

“Phew. That’s a relief”

“Hey, can you give it to me?” Chrissie asked. “I want to try something”

Anya obliged, and Chrissie took the eye in her own thumb and forefinger, taking care to make sure it didn’t sink into her palm. She held it up to her forehead and pushed it in.

“Wow. You weren’t kidding. I think I can move it independently of my normal eyes.”

“Hey, it’s brown!”

Chrissie stared at Anya with all three of her eyes.

“Huh?”

“When it was in my hand, it was green. Now it’s attached to you, it’s conformed to your eye colour.”

“Really? Cool! Do the other parts act like this?”

Anya picked up one of the slip-on ears.

“Well, let’s see.”

She carefully stuck it on Chrissie’s neck, under her normal right ear. Sure enough, the plastic ear rippled and morphed, turning into an exact replica of Chrissie’s right ear.

“Whoa. It’s definitely your ear, alright. Look it’s even got the same earring. Um…is your hearing affected at all?”

Chrissie listened intently.

”Hmm…it feels like I’m hearing more detail from the right. Not louder, but it sounds almost sharper…like I can also hear higher frequencies.”

“Want me to give you another one to match it?”

“Nah, not right now.”

Chrissie then popped her third eye out. However, when she gave her third ear a tug, nothing happened.

“Ow! Hey, it won’t come off.”

“Try squeezing the base, maybe it’s on a similar principle as the eyes.”

Chrissie did just that. Still, nothing happened.

Anya snapped her fingers.

“Here, let me try.”

She gave Chrissie’s third ear a tug, and it came off with a pop. It quickly reverted back into its original plastic form.

“How’d you do that?” Chrissie asked.

“Must be some sort of safeguard, like only the person who put it there can remove it.“ said Anya. “So, one thing’s for sure - we’re the potatoes.”

Chrissie clapped her hands.

“Ooh, we’re gonna have so much fun with these,” she said, picking up a plastic nose.

Anya picked up a pair of red plastic lips.

“Okay, so this must be the mouth. I wonder…”

And with that, she raised the plastic lips to her own mouth and pushed against it. Chrissie could see Anya’s mouth rippling and morphing before Anya’s mouth reverted back to normal.

“So…does your mouth feel any different?”

Anya smacked her lips, and felt around her mouth with her tongue.

“Testing, testing…no, not really. Seems kinda pointless.”

Anya pulled off the mouth, and it turned back into plastic. But her mouth felt funny after she removed the plastic. Chrissie shrieked.

“Mmm?” Anya asked.

Chrissie quivered, pointing at Anya’s face. Anya was confused. She had meant to say, “What’s wrong?”, but she couldn’t. She felt around her mouth again, but her tongue didn’t seem to detect any teeth, more like a solid wall of gum. Anya raised her hand to her mouth…or rather, where it would normally be, because it was nothing but smooth skin.

Anya nervously picked up her phone to look at her reflection, and her fear was confirmed - her mouth was gone.

“MMMMMMM!!!” She screamed.

“Put the plastic mouth back on!” Chrissie yelped. Anya was so panicky that she was desperate for anything to help, and obliged. No sooner had she placed the plastic mouth underneath her nose that she felt something familiar. She gasped and stretched her jaw, confirming that her mouth was back.

“Wow. That was freaky.”

“Uhh…Anya, your mouth is kind of lopsided”

Anya looked at her reflection again, and could see that her mouth was slightly askew. She smirked, and recentered her mouth.

“Okay, so not only does attaching these things to yourself create additional facial features, but placing them over your normal features converts them into the parts.”

The two of them stared at each other.

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking, Chrissie?”
“I think I am, Anya.”

And then, the two of them said in unison, “It’s facelift time!”

Rummaging through the box, the two roommates gathered together an assortment of plastic facial features, and went off to their separate rooms.

Ten minutes later, Anya came out of her room, now sporting four eyes. She knocked on the door to Chrissie’s room, and was greeted by the strange sight of Chrissie sporting additional ears - two on her forehead, two on her cheeks, and two on her neck.

“You know, you didn’t have to knock so loudly”, said Chrissie, with an air of smugness in her voice.

“Well, pardon me for not knowing ahead of time that you’d have eight ears.”

“Nine, actually”

Chrissie turned around, and on the back of her neck was a ninth ear, directly mounted onto her spine.

“What good is surround sound hearing without a subwoofer?”

The two girls chuckled, and turned on the TV.

As they watched their choice of movie on the streaming service, the two of them couldn’t help but appreciate their current alterations. Anya’s vision allowed her to see details she couldn’t with just two eyes, and this gave her a whole new viewing experience. Likewise, Chrissie’s enhanced hearing enhanced the movie. Things were going well, until a fly landed on Chrissie’s arm.

“Oi! Shoo.”

The fly stuck around for a bit before it flew off.

“Damn bugs.”

“Too loud for you, eh?” Anya teased.

“With these ears? It was practically like being next to a jet engine.”

The two huddled together and watched the rest of the movie, knowing that they’d only just scratched the surface of their new toys...
