Epilogue

July the fourth, 2025. The day and the year were easy to remember. The 4th is Dependence Day in America Inc, and 2025 was the year that the Ultra Conservatives were swept into power in the UK on a platform of "traditional" values and male empowerment. It was Friday, and while most Londoners were heading home for the weekend, Major Peter Taylor was lying on the highly polished floor of the Signals Center communications room beneath a coding module trying to diagnose a faulty connection that had been causing problems all afternoon. Standing over him, pressing buttons on the console was a communications analyst by the name of Kiara Anand. Although Major Taylor had only been in charge of the Signals Center for four months, they had know each other for a little over three years.

In his previous career as an MI6 operative, Peter's coded messages came to and from Kiara, and Kiara alone. The relationship between an agent and the signals analyst were very personal. The analyst could tell by the syntax of a coded message the state their agents were in. Were they relaxed, or rushed, or under some sort of duress? Likewise, the analyst was often the only connection to the homeland for an agent alone in what might be hostile territory. So it was for Peter and Kiara.

On this particular 4th of July, there were no urgent messages being sent or received. It had been designated a maintenance day, and only in the most dire of circumstances would an agent in the field be sending any messages. This gave Peter and his team the time needed to conduct repairs and upgrades to the aging equipment and install any new equipment that was available. They had already decided to call it a day after this irritating glitch was corrected when a commotion near the entrance to the communications room caused Peter to pull himself out from under the machine and sit up.

Pushing their way through the door was a squad of militia men, dressed in black combat gear with no apparent insignia. Peter had seen these troops around the city once or twice and knew they were part of what was being called the MRU. Moral Regeneration Unit troops. He could hardly believe they had the legal authority to operate on British soil, but apparently a recent Act of Parliament had given this new organization an open ended charter to do as they pleased. What seemed to please them the most was ferreting out lesbians and dragging them to some compound they had on the outskirts of the city called a Regeneration Facility.

"Kiara Anand!" shouted a man who was, most likely, the person in charge of the raiding party. He held up a photo and looked around the room at the women standing frozen in their places. One or two glanced reflexively at Kiara, and the MRU man followed their line of sight.

Moving towards the shocked analyst, the man said loudly, "Kiara Anand, you are under arrest for deviant sexual behaviour. You will come with us."

"What?! No! Peter, they can't just..."

The man and two of his comrades quickly closed in on Kiara and managed to handcuff her wrists behind her back. "Don't give us any trouble, dyke," he snarled as he pulled up on her wrists, forcing her to bend forward to relieve the pain in her shoulders.

Peter had known Kiara was a lesbian, but it had never been an issue for him or any of the others who worked in the Center. "Now just a minute!" he reacted. "You have no right to come in...." His protest was stifled as two heavily armed militiamen stepped in front of him with their rifles pointed directly at his stomach. He might have been able to disable both of them, but what of the other four men standing nearby?

"Stay out of this, sir," the leader said as he held onto Kiara's arm and led her towards the door.

Peter stood helplessly by as they led his friend out of the room. He'd heard rumors about the Regeneration center and jokes about the techniques used there. 'Fuck 'em 'til they love it' was a popular one. 'Shock the lezzie right out of them' was another. The notion that either method would be used on Kiara snapped Peter out of his temporary daze and he ran to his desk to grab his cell phone.

Bounding down the steps of the rear fire exit, he called his friend, a fellow ex-spy, John Waters, and told him what had just happened. John was equally outraged and agreed to make some calls and then meet Peter at a location close to the MRU facility.

Between the two men they had assembled a small force of nine heavily armed men, two trucks, and surprisingly, one bazooka! It took a heated argument to persuade Peter to stay in his car a block away, but in the end he agreed that the MRU would recognize him from the Signals Center and track him down later. Besides, they needed someone to serve as both the lookout and the driver of the escape vehicle.

While he waited, Peter decided to call his former boss, the MI6 Director of Special Actions, Jessica Smythe, to apprise her of the situation and to ask her advice. Being of the sapphic persuasion herself, Peter hoped Jessica would be sympathetic to Kiara's plight. Not only was she sympathetic, but it seemed she had a fledgling network of contacts at the ready that had already spirited a couple of women to safety in Scotland where the new British laws did not apply. He was given an address on the north side of the city, not far from where he was, to drop Kiara off. Jessica promised she would be in good hands and out of the country by the morning. Before hanging up, the spy chief invited him to dinner the following day to discuss the little support network she was putting together. The fact that this covert network was not sanctioned by the new regime appealed to Peter and he gladly agreed to the meeting.

The ambush of the MRU jeep went off without a hitch, and as promised, Kiara was whisked out of the country the following day.

2029

Peter turned over and watched Joanne sleeping peacefully next to him. He hadn't slept well because he was still trying to wrap his mind around what Kiara had told him the previous day when he met with her at the Gretna Signals station. Joanne knew he had gone to the Signals station for a few days but assumed it was work related. In fact, he hadn't known why the communications analyst wanted to meet with him either, only that she had requested the face-to-face in her last transmission to him.

'MMG23' which meant: meet me in Gretna on the 23rd.

The code wasn't in the KSN code book, it was just something they had worked out together in the event one of them needed to pass along information that was too sensitive to transmit over the airwaves. Although it was frowned upon, communications analysts and their field agents usually developed little personal codes that were only used between them.

What she told him was, in fact, very sensitive, and now he had to decide whether Joanne should be briefed or not. He knew it was not something that could simply be swept under the rug. Sooner or later the rug would be removed and all would be revealed. It was better to get this into the open right away.

When he had returned from his trip Joanne was excited to see him. He had taken her out to dinner and then to his place afterwards. Joanne had commented on his sullen mood and had pretty much pulled him through the house and into the bedroom, determined to cheer up 'her Sir'.

Not wanting to totally ruin her evening, he had pushed his problems aside and succumbed to Jo's charms, allowing her to take the lead. Their love-making seemed to have a deeper intensity that Joanne interpreted as being due to their brief separation. The time apart did whet Peter's desire for Jo, but it had also given him time alone to think about what had developed between them.

His stint in Britain's Special Forces at a young age, followed by several years working for MI6, had made it impossible for him to develop anything close to a lasting relationship with a woman. That's not to say he didn't enjoy a woman's company from time to time with some of those interludes lasting several weeks to several months. But those were never meant to be serious relationships by either party. When he had left Her Majesty's Secret Service it was, in part, to get on with his life. He had no desire to remain single forever.

Not long after taking over the Signals Corp, the Ultra-Conservatives took over the country and began their purge of "sexual deviants" inside and outside of  the government. After Kiara's arrest and subsequent rescue, the MRU continued to operate unhindered throughout London, only their armaments were substantially stronger. Before long Jessica Smythe and her lover, Abigail, were targeted. While Jessica's newly formed Kink Support Network was able to grab her away from the MRU, Abbie was not as lucky and was sent to the Regeneration Center.

It was Peter, with the help of a KSN sympathizer inside the MRU facility, who came up with a plan to rescue Abbie before the full effects of the much refined Regeneration process took its toll on her. With the increased focus on border security, taking her as his "regenerated wife" had been the only way to keep her safe until a plan could be devised to get her out of the country. That took two years.

During that time, Peter and Abbie lived as husband and wife, with Abbie not realizing Peter was working with the KSN. Being a "regenerated" woman, she was subject to periodic questioning and it had been decided to keep her in the dark as far as Peter's activities went for their mutual protection. Peter oversaw Cecil Court, among other safe-houses on the west side of the city, and served as the KSN's communications expert. It was essential to keep his clandestine work a secret from everyone, including Abbie.

Peter knew, of course, that Abigail would one day be returned to her Mistress, Jessica. He tried not to get emotionally attached to her, but it was impossible not to. When, in the end, he escorted her to the tunnel that had been dug at the Gretna Signals station, he did so with his heart in his throat. Afterwards, he buried himself in his work and shut out any means of developing a closeness to anyone.

Until Joanne Hallewell came into his life.

Even then, he tried to keep his relationship with the new Leather Bound safe-house Minder strictly business. That did not go as planned, and he found himself in situations that forced him to interact with her in social settings. As someone new to the KSN and the dark world he inhabited, Joanne repeatedly surprised him with how she handled each situation she encountered. He gained a great deal of respect for her in a short period of time, and along with that, a fondness that grew of its own accord into what he feared was love.

Looking at her now, his heart told him it was, if fact, love. But his heart also ached from the effort of not breaking. If he could watch her sleep all day long, he would, but he knew that wasn't possible. He leaned forward and kissed her bare shoulder, and then along her collar bone until she began to stir.

Opening her eyes, Joanne smiled and hummed, "Mmm, I love being woken up like this, Sir."

In the three months since Olivia's aborted flight from the country, and as Peter and Joanne began seriously dating, Joanne began to reveal her true feelings about living under the new laws. At first he thought she was toying with him by saying she preferred that he lead her on his leash. She suggested that he gag her when they went out in public, even though he said that it was not strictly necessary. After their relationship had progressed to a physical one, he went to remove her collar and she asked him if she could be permitted to leave it on while they made love. She called him Sir by choice, and it was not because he held a military rank. He was "her Sir."

The truth was, she enjoyed living under the new laws in a male dominated environment, and she seemed to love that it was Peter who was dominating her. For his part, it wasn't long before Peter began to truly love dominating her, if for nothing more than to see how happy it made her. He had asked her once why she joined the KSN if she felt this way about the laws, and she replied that she couldn't support a government that forced this way of life on women who were against it. The idea of the Regeneration centers were abhorrent to her, as was the persecution of gays and lesbians. She fought for them, but expected her wants and desires to be respected as well.

Joanne's eyes searched Peter's face and then she said, very softly, "You have that sullen look about you again, my dear Sir. What is it? What's on your mind?" She reached up and traced a line down his cheek, and then cupped the side of his face with her soft warm hand.

Peter sighed, "Before I left Gretna yesterday I met with a friend of mine from Edinburgh. She had some intel for me that I've had a hard time processing."

"And may I ask what that is?" Joanne inquired as she propped herself up on her elbows.

"It seems that your grandmother has not retired as she has led us to believe, for one thing." He was beating around the bush, and he knew it.

"What?!" Joanne blurted out.

"In fact, she's on staff in Edinburgh and has been working with Abigail, you know, my ex-wife, on something that they've code-named Operation Agapornis." He paused to watch her face, to see if that name meant anything to her. Kiara had to explain its meaning to him, but he suspected Joanne was more well versed than he.

Joanne's eyes squinted slightly as her mind digested the term. "Agapornis...as in the African Lovebird? What an odd name for an op...."

"They've been working on this together for a couple of years, and I guess they consider it to be a successful operation. They're quite pleased with themselves."

Peter could tell Jo's mind was still tumbling with the term, and then her eyes widened. "You mean...they...they set us up?"

"They did," Peter said flatly.

Joanne's eyes were locked onto Peter's for a moment before she spoke. "And now you feel like we've been manipulated and it's changed things?"

"Now I realize how much I love you, and I'm hoping this news doesn't change what we have together," he said in a whisper because it took all of his nerve to come out and say it.

"You love me?" Joanne asked, wetness creeping out of the corners of her large brown eyes.

"I do."

"Then we are lovebirds, sweet sir, because I love you, too, regardless of how we happened to find each other."

The intensity of their love-making the previous evening was soon to be eclipsed.
