As the year progresses
And the Holidays draw near
I dread my friend's memories and stresses
Or is it the end of empathy that I fear?

I know, it happened around this time
But that was many years ago
From what he's said, she wasn't worth a dime
I would think that he'd be happy to let it go

The first time the story was told
There was a sympathetic ear to hear
By the fifth year the story was old
He couldn't get past it, that was quite clear

How do you nicely say
That was in the past
Tomorrow is a new day
These feelings of self pity mustn't last

If I don't frown and nod my head
And take a minute away from my work
Would he think I'm still a friend
Or an uncaring jerk?
