I've been itching to write a mod for Fallout 4. I've actually went ahead and tried my hand at it, but papyrus scripting is a confusing bitch to figure out. I've just been banging my head at it for weeks, months almost. It's just been really frustrating because I have a story to tell. One that I'd really enjoy playing through in the game, and that I feel can nestle comfortably in the world of Fallout.
And so I've decided to just write the damned story.
It's not really a full-involvement "main quest"-type story. I envisioned it as an impetus for a player to experience the world through an alternate start. Skip the stupid "find my baby" story line, and just start as a wanderer in the middle of the wasteland. Give your character his or her own backstory. I'm inclined to the Clint Eastwood - man with no name kind of experience, where the character just wanders the wasteland, interacting with factions and becoming this subtle force of change in the world, unwittingly shaping it to her fancy.
This questline nestles into that. I've been extremely interested in game design, and I wanted to use this as an exercise to craft an experience. I want an unremarkable sidequest that lasts a long playthrough. Something that augments the gameplay, and adds a new layer to the above, whilst giving the player a soft objective and impetus to wander farther.
In this version of Fallout, the world is still flooded with toxic fumes. No one can journey out into the wasteland without a gas mask, and gas mask filters are an essential commodity. Guns for hire wander the wasteland trying to get by, as the seeds of civilization are slowly beginning to take root. Ironically these settlements have no place for a man/woman of violence, and they are doomed to wander the land forever, until they change, or die out.
