Cory held the device in her hands. It was a small metal disc, about two, maybe three times the size of a bottle cap, but as thin as two small coins, held together. On one surface sat a large, friendly button, and on its flip side, an ultra-fine wire mesh. It was surprisingly heavy, given its size, and its case was semi-flexible. It appeared to be constructed of some dense, hardened rubber.
The box that it came in was gaudy, with questionable medals and awards printed across every surface. Bright colors advertised the “Tight-and-Fresh™ Vac-U-Seal Food Sealer” in large, loud words that screamed across any room. Cory set the device aside and rummaged inside the cardboard.
A small instruction manual unfolded into a large sheet of cheap waxed paper.
Congratulations and thank you for purchasing Tight-and-Fresh™ Vac-U-Seal Food Sealer – the all-purpose food sealer for all your domestic needs!
WARNING: Vac-U-Seal Steritex is a latex-based compound. Do not use Vac-U-Seal if you have a latex allergy. Vac-U-Seal is known to react with other latex/rubber materials. Do not use Vac-U-Seal on anything other than organics.
“I’m an ‘organic’. Could you Vac-U-Seal me?”
Cory still wasn’t sure if she was joking. Her eyes glanced around the kitchenette – barren countertops and stoves that had not been lit for weeks chided her for her lack of homeliness. She’d always wanted to cook more… but she wasn’t fooling anyone.
“I guess I could use it for leftovers.”
Even her fridge was devoid of content. A few bottles of ginger ale lined the door along with a carton of milk and a bottle of water. Half a pizza sat unfinished in its box and a plastic box of yakisoba pondered the depth of eternity in the crisper.
The pizza first, then.
Cory retrieved the box and laid it on her countertop. She exposed the ‘organics’ within to sunlight for the first time in two, maybe three days and was pleased to find that it still appeared edible, if a little stiff and stale.
With a raised eyebrow to indicate her skepticism to no one in particular, she positioned the disc atop the hardened cheese and pepperoni and tapped the button once.
The button lit up a bright fuchsia pink, and Cory’s eyes widened as a black ooze began to creep out from its underside, wrapping itself around the slice of pizza of its own accord. As it crept along the pizza’s surface, it quickly dried out into a matte black, smoothing any imperfections along the way. It was warm to the touch, and for all intents and purposes, appeared to be black rubber. It coated the pizza slice quite snugly, but it was clear that a few pockets of air were trapped in the sealing process.
Cory tapped the button twice.
The button glowed a soft lavender as hidden machinery whirred to life within. All at once, a snap of hissing air cut through the drone, and the Vac-U-Seal collapsed around the pizza. Forming tightly around the cracks and crevices of pepperoni, olives and mushrooms, the rubber-like Steritex sealed the slice of pizza in a seamless, airtight coating.
Compressed by the tight rubber, the slice of pizza had become quite stiff. It had become visibly smaller than its brethren that remained naked within the box. The coating was absolute, and Cory was unable to pry the Vac-U-Seal from the pizza’s surface. It seemed she would only be able to seal one thing at a time.
She tapped the button once again.
It cycled to a bright red as air rushed in to release the pizza from its prison. The Steritex slithered its way back into the Vac-U-Seal device, quickly returning the pizza to its prior, edible state. The cheese had melted some, and the slice almost looked more appetizing than the others – if a little squashed.
Cory sniffed the pizza.
It smelled like pizza.
A touch.
Feels like pizza.
A closer look.
No trace of rubber.
A moment of hesitation.
A large bite.
Tastes like pizza.
Pretty good pizza too.
Cory studied the device as she gnawed at the slice of cold, cheesy flatbread. The possibilities were endless… and she wasn’t thinking about food. Her mind was racing.
Would it work?
How far would it go?
How would she breathe?
Could she cut it?
Should she wear anything underneath?
Should she microwave the rest of the pizza?
Could she still eat dinner if she did?
What should she do next?
