Jenna was backing away from the computer screen in shock.
Her own face stared back at her; it wasn’t quite right, the eyes were blue, not green, and the hair was in a style that she wouldn’t be seen dead with. However, everything else was exactly right, even down to the ‘beauty spot’ on her cheek…
She read down the advert, then saw something that she had missed earlier in the description. It said:
One of our more popular models… Jenna.
Crying openly, now, she shrieked…
Shaking, she phoned her boyfriend…
“Babe, I need you.”, she sobbed. “Please, come home now.”
Andy had left work, citing a family emergency, as soon as he had got the call, and he rushed straight home.
Jenna was still frozen, staring at the screen, sobbing…
“Is that me?”, she cried. “It can’t be, can it? What’s going on?”
Andy hugged her as she sobbed. He then gently whispered in her ear…
“I didn’t mean for you to find out like this.”
Jenna flinched, then pulled away from him.
“You knew about this!!”
“Of course, I did… it’s where I bought you from. You’re not human, after all…”
In a state of shock, Jenna looked back through blurred vision at the screen. She then saw the paragraph further down…
Custom models can be built to order, including complete self-supporting versions. We guarantee you will think they are alive, or your money back.
Jenna just sobbed uncontrollably…
“Come, sit with me”, Andy said, dropping onto the sofa, first pressing a button to turn the computer off.
Jenna just glared at him.
“Why should I believe anything you say?”, she said, her voice getting higher and higher. She was hysterical. “You’re trying to get me to believe I’m a robot. I’m not! I’m a human being, with feelings! Feelings that right now you’re trampling all over, by the way!”
“Jenna, please…”
“That’s not my name! That’s just what the model is called! Do you even know my name??”
“Now you’re just being ridiculous”, said Andy. “Please, Jenna, sit with me. We need to talk.”
Very moody, Jenna sat, arms and legs crossed, next to Andy. She was obviously furious.
Andy reached over and brushed a stray hair out of her eye.
“You’re beautiful when you’re angry, you know that?”, he said.
“Don’t change the subject”, she said, feeling really stroppy. “Now, when did you supposedly buy me?”
“About six months ago”, said Andy, not bothering to contradict her or convince her otherwise.
“Then why have I got memories going right back to childhood?”, Jenna asked.
“It’s part of your personality matrix. It was loaded onto you to give your AI something to draw from.”
“Ah, I can stop you there”, said Jenna. “I just met my sister last week, and I saw my secondary school teacher in town only the other day. They are both real.”
“Yes, they are”, Andy said. “They are related to the real Jenna, who you were based on. Your memory model is so complete you can carry on conversations that the real Jenna has had with them. Haven’t you ever wondered why you have ‘forgotten’ meeting up with someone? It’s because it wasn’t you meeting them, it was the real Jenna. She probably has the same problems.”
By now, Jenna was getting really confused, but she still didn’t believe Andy. Problem was, she still cared for him…
Andy could tell Jenna was getting upset.
“What do you want to do, love?”, he asked.
“I want to go back to before I saw that advert on the computer”, she said. “I want to be ‘the’ Jenna again. You know, the one you fell in love with.”
“You’re still that”, Andy said. “You’re just not as unique as you thought…”
Andy hugged Jenna as she cried.
He really wasn’t sure what to do. He couldn’t tell her about the accident; the shock to her system would kill her.
Jenna wasn’t Jenna. She was Jenna’s twin sister, Paula…
Paula had been sent out by their father to find their wayward daughter, Jenna, one evening. She’d found Jenna and Andy partying at a local club.
She’d grabbed hold of Jenna, towed her back to her car to take her home. Andy had insisted on coming too…
The problem was, Paula had been drinking before coming out. She also wasn’t prepared for how much resistance Jenna was putting up.
Distracted by Jenna and the alcohol, her reactions were too slow to avoid jumping a red light…
Jenna had been killed instantly in the crash. Paula’s face had gone through the windscreen. Andy, stunned, had been thrown clear…
Andy had pulled both Jenna and Paula clear. He had seen at once that there was nothing that could be done for Jenna but, at the same time, couldn’t do without her. Both women were wearing identical outfits; he quickly switched their wallets over. Now Paula had died in the crash, and Jenna was the one with the ruined face…
Andy’s job was prosthetics and other related items for movies, but he was very good at his job. He was also the movie sets first aider…
Before any emergency services had turned up, Andy and Paula had slipped away, leaving Jenna’s body behind the wheel…
As far as her father was concerned, he always felt guilty for not realising Paula had been drinking. ‘She’ had been killed driving before she met up with Andy and Jenna…
‘Jenna’, once Paula, now recovering slowly with Andy, had no memory of the accident. The concussion and the head injury had seen to that. Andy had made sure that there was no permanent damage, then patched her up properly; he’d also added a few permanent prosthetics in just the right places to turn Paula into Jenna.
Satisfied and content, he settled down next to her in bed…
That had been six months ago.
Life had been incredible with Andy. They were thinking of getting married…
Then some of her memories as Paula had started to resurface.
Andy had explained most of them away, but he knew it was only a matter of time…
In the end, he decided the fiction of the Jenna ‘android’ would explain why some of her memories felt ‘artificial’.
He had been quite wrong, though…
Jenna went to see a doctor, ostensibly to get her head checked, taking Andy with her.
“I’m worried about my boyfriend”, she suddenly said. “He thinks I’m an android…!”
The doctor chuckled quietly.
“Oh dear…”, she said. “And how long has this been going on?”
“Ever since I found the advert for me on his computer”, Jenna said.
“Well, we can solve this quite easily, can’t we”, said the doctor. “Let’s get you through the MRI and compare it to your medical records, shall we?”
Before Andy could stop them, this was arranged and done.
The doctor spent a while going over the results.
“Well, this is strange”, she said. Jenna and Andy both looked concerned.
“There’s a problem with your records, Ms Adams”, the doctor said. “According to them you had your appendix removed due to appendicitis five years ago, and you should also have a plate in your leg where you had a compound fracture from a riding accident. However, your appendix is still there, and there’s no plate in your leg.”
“What does that mean?”
“Well, unless I’m going nuts, either your records have been misfiled, or you’re not Jenna Adams. It’s weird, though; apart from those two differences your records are identical. Have you ever had a twin sister, or something?”
“Yes, I used to”, said Jenna. “Her name was Paula. She died in a car crash a while back…”
Her voice trailed off.
“Oh, I’m sorry”, the doctor said. “I didn’t mean to dredge up painful memories.”
“Anyway”, she continued, “You’re definitely not an android.”
Jenna glared at Andy…
