Martin got home from work at 5:30pm as usual, as it was a short walk from the office.
He took off his coat and went into the front room, then stopped with his mouth open.
Sarah, his wife, was sitting on the sofa. Nothing unusual about that, you think…
Her clothes were made of completely transparent latex. She was ‘covered’ with it from head to foot but, at the same time, everything was on show.
The domed clear helmet also covered her head, enclosing it. Small vents in the collar round her neck were allowing her to breathe, but the helmet was soundproof, rendering her mute.
She got up, walked up to her husband and threw her arms around him, smiling. She seemed to be quite comfortable with her new attire. She then handed him a card.
‘The HuPet store – make yourself a friend for life’
There was a QR code on the back of the card. Martin, in a state of shock, scanned it.
The introductory video and PDF explained about the HuPet concept; HuPets were people that wanted to forever be for one person, and one person only. They didn’t want to ever risk being touched by another; at the same time, they wanted to do everything for their ‘owner’.
Sarah, not feeling she was strong enough to properly fulfil her marriage vows, had taken what she felt was the next step and had herself converted into a HuPet. She could only take off any part of her suit in her owner’s presence; if she wasn’t fully attired when he was away, she would be seriously punished by the collar. She didn’t need to go shopping as HuPets Inc. organised all her deliveries for her.
Her sister had been furious; she had tried to pull off Sarah’s helmet when she first found out, and Sarah had physically thrown her out of the house. Problem was, Sarah had had to do what she did because she had felt attracted to one of her male office colleagues. She had almost gone home with him to have sex. She had been so shocked by her actions that she had signed up for the HuPet programme the next day.
As Martin walked over to Sarah, her helmet unlocked, and she took it off.
“Hi”, she said. “I know it’s a bit much, but I needed to do this. Please, trust me. It’s for the better.”
“I take it now’s the wrong time to tell you I’m leaving you, then…?”, Martin said, quietly.
Tears filled Sarah’s eyes.
“Why…?”, she wailed. “I did this for you!”
“You shouldn’t have needed to”, said Martin. “I know about Jake at work; he’s a friend of mine. He actually asked me if we were still married, as you had been quite receptive to his ‘advances’. His boss, Jane, is who I’m seeing.”
“Let me know when the divorce comes through!”, cried Sarah, disgustedly. She then slammed her helmet back on and left the room.
Martin moved out that evening.
Sarah spoke to HuPet, via the customer services link in her helmet, but they were adamant there was nothing they could do until she had legal paperwork for their divorce. They had to have proof, otherwise anyone could use any excuse to stop being a HuPet.
Sarah had to stay shut away for six months...
Finally, the divorce came through. Her solicitors were used to acting without her instructions; everything was handled by a HuPet representative. Sarah received the news from them that her suit was now unlocked.
She was able to take the helmet off for the first time in ages.
The noise hit her almost at once; after six months plus of silence, it was overwhelming.
Contacting HuPet, after putting her helmet back on, she asked them whether she could keep wearing the suit, just have it set to her ownership. When she explained why, they agreed.
Sarah never leaves her flat, now; life is just too much for her. She does try taking her helmet off occasionally, when her sister visits, but that’s about as much as she can stand.
The ‘experience’ of being a HuPet has permanently changed her; so much so, she’s thinking about getting herself adopted…
