Finally, Doctor Bailey was able to confirm HAH One was out of danger.
“I can’t keep awake much longer”, HAH One said. “Please, put me on charge, then strap me down. I’ve got to let Danni out, or she’ll go crazy.”
“Are you sure that’s necessary?”, asked Doctor Bailey.
“Yes”, said HAH One. “She’s still very angry and confused. Please, don’t give up on her…”
With that, Doctor Bailey strapped HAH One down, plugged her in to a normal phone charger (as she wasn’t in the main lab) then stood back.
The collar light changed from blue to yellow.
“No! Please! Just let me die!”, wailed Danni, knowing that her attempt had failed, and Doctor Bailey had cured her.
Doctor Bailey just talked to her softly, letting Danni shout back, scream and rage. Eventually, as she had done in the canteen before, she cried herself out and went quiet.
Doctor Bailey just carried on talking to her quietly and stroking her head.
Danni then started quietly sobbing.
“Oh my god, what did I do?”, she finally said. “Pete, I’m sorry!”, she cried out. “You were only trying to help…!”
“These ‘mood swings’ are getting to be a real problem”, said Doctor Taylor, as Pete entered the room. “You’re damn lucky HAH One cares for you so much, or you’d be dead right now.”
“I am anyway!”, said Danni. “This is only a simulation of me…”
“The hell it is!”, Doctor Bailey suddenly shouted, taking both Danni and Pete by surprise. “You’re a really ungrateful bitch, you know that? You’ve been given the gift of a second chance, and all you want to do is throw it away. You’ve got people that love you, especially HAH One, and all you want to do is check out. You even tried to take her with you…!”
Danni’s lip quivered and Pete could only stand and stare. He’d never heard Doctor Bailey even raise her voice before, let alone shout.
At the same time, Danni heard HAH One say “I love you too, you know”, in her head.
She just started crying again.
“Pete, hug me, please…”, she said.
Doctor Bailey unstrapped Danni, and Pete flew into her arms…
Danni was shortly able to talk lucidly about what had happened.
“I thought HAH One was a rival. I couldn’t fight her, because she’s a better version of me. I didn’t realise that she loves me like a sister but, effectively like a twin sister, she can also have feelings for you. Essentially, I was jealous of a better version of myself.”
“She’s not a better version, just different”, Pete said. “And it’s you I’m in love with, you silly idiot. HAH One just cares for me like you would Doctor Bailey, for example. A good friend of the family. She’s grateful to me for caring for you and loving you.”
“It’s true, you know”, HAH One’s voice came in Danni’s head. “Also, because of the trauma, the barriers down between us now. I know everything you know, and you can have everything of me.”
Danni suddenly smiled, and Pete was sure he saw her glow…
From that point on, there was a third light on the collar, a green one. Danni and HAH One had at last integrated completely, without losing any of each other.
Danni was now a real essential member of the team; she had all her university knowledge, as well as access to HAH One’s data, knowledge and experience. If she had any sort of a panic attack, she could increase the level of HAH One’s influence to calm her, as well as allowing HAH One to learn about human nature.
She even still let HAH One take control completely when some pure science was needed, as her analytical mind was still better than Danni’s (she grudgingly admitted).
She still had the occasional meltdown, but nothing like the ones she first had, especially with her support network around her.
They were also nothing like the meltdown that Angela had when Danni announced she was engaged to Pete…
Angela had no grounds for complaint, really. She was engaged to Doctor Bailey…
The end. Happy ever after? Only time can tell…
