While Gabriel isn’t a very social person, she does have a small friend group with whom she occasionally hangs out. Of the three in the group, Tiff is her closest friend, while Rose and Elle are friends of Rose who she’s also acquainted with.
Tiff, the “leader” of the friend group, will usually post in the group chat when they have plans to get together. When they do, it’s usually at a specific sport in the park near Rose’s place. It’s a quiet little area near the edge of the park surrounded by trees, and with a few benches. The spot rarely has any people near it, which means the four multilimb girls can get together without anyone staring at them.
Gabriel was walking down the park path which eventually lead to the secret spot to meet with her friends. The path was clear, but strewn with pebbles and roots. You’d think having so many legs would make navigating rough terrain easier, but it just makes her twelve times more likely to stub her toe.
The path that branches from the main path to the secret spot wasn’t very clear, but Gabriel had gone down this path several times. And with her three rightmost heads trained on the right side of the path, she knew she wasn’t gonna miss it. As she walked, she was worried that she may have arrived too early, but as she caught a glimpse of Tiff’s purple hair through the foliage, her stress alleviated.
Approaching the secret path, her four frontmost arms covered as many eyes as they could reach as she pushed her way through stray branches. As one of her heads glanced up, she saw all three girls turning to face her, with five delighted smiles pointed her way.
“Ah, there you are!” Tiff’s left head said.
“Arrived just in time,” Gabriel stated with one head, “What’s going on?” She asked with a different head.
“Oh, not much,” Tiff’s middle head responded while her right head glanced at her phone, “Just chatting as usual.”
“Good to see you’re doing fine.” Rose said, stretching her shoulders.
Elle drummed her fingers on the ground, “I could hear you from like, a mile away. Sounded like a whole crowd!”
“Heh, yeah. That’s what happens when you have too many legs,” Gabriel responded.
“Oh, come on. There’s no such thing as ‘too many legs.’” Tiff said with a chuckle.
“There is,” Gabriel said, “and I am far beyond that point.”
“I mean, it’s not necessarily a bad thing.” Rose added, brushing her crimson hair with her upper-front right hand.
“I never said it was,” Gabriel replied, “Really, I should be grateful. I really need all these legs to hold everything else up.”
Elle nodded, “And you’ve got quite a lot to hold up!”
“Yep.” Gabriel said. She looked at each of her friends with a few heads each. Tiff’s middle and right heads were looking at her phone, but her left head noticed Gabriel’s glances and gave a quick smile in response. Rose watched the exchange with slight intrigue, her four eyes glancing back and forth at every head in the scenario.
“Y’know, I’ve always wondered...” Rose spoke up after some time, “...what’s it like having multiple heads?”
“Fun!” Tiff’s right head answered.
“A little chaotic.” Gabriel’s third-left front head added.
“I feel like you’ve asked this before...” Elle chimed in, looking at Rose.
“Yeah but...” Rose looked down. “...It just seems so hard to wrap my only head around.”
“Well, what exactly has you confused?” Gabriel asked, trying her best to sound polite.
Rose looked back up at her. “Well, for starters, how do you see things? Like, I know I’ve got extra eyes, but all of yours are so far apart! How do you tell what you’re looking at, and from where?”
A couple of Gabriel’s heads raised their eyebrows. “Well, all of my... ‘points of view,’ I guess, are sort of arranged in my vision in, like, a grid pattern,” she explained, “And since my brains are all focused on their own head’s eyes, I can look wherever without getting confused.” She tilted her heads in every direction, as if to demonstrate.
Rose watched in awe. “Wow... You must be so much more observant if you’re seeing...” She quickly counted Gabriel’s heads with her fingers. “...Twenty one things at once!”
Gabriel focused most of her heads back at Rose. “Oh, I don’t use all of them at once.”
“What?” Rose said, visibly confused.
“When one of my heads isn’t focused on anything, it kinda... goes on autopilot, and my vision sorta... ignores it.” Gabriel shrugged. “I dunno, it’s a little hard to describe. Tiff, you get it, right?”
“Of course!” Tiff answered. “That’s about what it’s like.”
“I’m not sure I fully understand...” Rose’s eyebrows lowered in puzzlement.
“Well, think of like this...” Gabriel turned to her. “Are you always using all of your arms at the same time?”
“Well, no...” Rose hesitantly responded, “I mostly just use the ones in the front-“
“Exactly!” Gabriel interrupted, “You use the front ones because they’re in the most convenient spot. Meanwhile, the other ones just hang at your side and do their own thing. My heads work the same way. I mainly just use the front ones to talk and look ahead, and the side ones when I want to look beside me, but the other ones mostly just sit there. And just like how you ignore your arms when you’re not using them, my unused head’s visions fade away so I can focus on the ones I’m actually using.”
“Huh,” Rose said, “Kinda seems like a waste then.”
“Hey, I didn’t design my own body.” Gabriel said, jokingly.
“Man, the way you explain stuff never fails to fascinate me.” Elle commented.
“Thank you.” Gabriel replied. Just then, one of her lips smacked. From the perspective of the other girls, they couldn’t see exactly which one, but the smacking was heard. “Does anyone have any water? My second-left middle head has dry lips.”
“I gotcha!” Elle said, turning to her backpack which was sitting on the bench behind her. She pulled a plastic bottle of water from it with her right hand-foot before turning back to Gabriel and reaching it out as far as she could without falling over. Gabriel took a few steps towards and took the bottle with her second-front right hand.
“Thanks.” She said, passing the bottle to her frontmost left hand and untwisting the cap with her second-front left hand before tilting her two leftmost front heads forwards so she had room to reach the bottle to the thirsty head. Said head took a quick sip, licked its lips, and let out a satisfied “Ah!”
“Y’know, the way you treat all your heads equally is kinda amusing.” Tiff said.
Gabriel’s front heads looked at her while she passed the bottle back to Elle. “Eh, I just hate having dry lips.”
“Now that you mention it,” Rose said, “All those heads acting as one makes you seem like quite the hive mind.”
“Oh! That reminds me,” Elle exclaimed, having put her water bottle back in her bag, “The other day, I overheard some guy explaining this crazy theory about you.”
“Go on...” Gabriel responded.
“So, according to this guy, since you have so many brains all hardwired together, you apparently have, like, psychic powers you can use to influence and take control of other people!”
“What!?” Several of Gabriels voices exclaimed, while the others just laughed.
“I know! Doesn’t it sound crazy?” Elle said whilst laughing alongside Tiff and Rose.
“I mean,” Gabriel said once she could speak again, “I can kinda see where he’s coming from. Mind control is usually associated with, like, big brain type stuff, I guess.” She brushed the hair of her side heads out of their eyes. “But like, there’s a limit. Each extra brain adds less than the last. I mean, a three-headed person is only slightly smarter than a two-headed person, and there’s an even smaller gap between three heads and four heads, and so on.”
“It’s like exponential, but backwards,” Tiff added, “Statistically, having two heads actually does make you roughly twice as smart as having one head, but as you add more and more heads, it becomes less of a difference.”
“Right, so even with a hundred heads, I doubt you could actually get any psychokinetic powers,” Gabriel concluded, “But I’m no neurologist, so you never know.”
“Well, if it ever feels like I have less free will than usual, I’ll know it’s you,” Elle joked.
All of Gabriel’s heads burst out laughing. “There’s your laugh track,” she said with the first head to calm down.
“What time is it?” Tiff’s right head asked as her back-left arm pulled out her phone, which her left head checked. “Oh shoot, I gotta go have supper soon,” her middle head said.
“Eh, it’s fine. I was about ready to head out anyways.” Rose responded.
“Same here,” said Elle, stretching her fingers.
“Well, I guess I’ll head out too, then.” Gabriel said.
“As opposed to staying here by yourself?” Tiff quipped.
Gabriel shrugged. “Hey, I can always have a conversation with myself!” She said with a smile. The other girls laughed.
One by one, the group of four all left through the same wooded passageway they entered, and continued to chat as they walked home together, until they eventually had to go their separate ways. Gabriel eventually reached her house, and soon found herself alone in her room again.
Sitting on her bed as she ate her supper, her many intertwined minds raced with the usual random things she thinks about, but also about the people she’d just spent so much time with. Her friends.
“I mean, I guess I could fake a conversation with myself if I wanted,” she said out loud, but to no one in particular. As much as she jokes about it, she never actually does it. She fears it might make her go insane somehow.
“Oh, who am I kidding? I don’t need myself to talk to, that’s what friends are for.” She said, as if answering her own thoughts. She smiled as she stood up and walked downstairs to the kitchen, still hungry.
That night as she laid in bed, she tried to exhaust her erratic minds by putting more thought into that hive mind theory Elle had mentioned. If it was true, was she already influencing the people around her? She thought of her teacher, the four-headed one who lets her use her phone in class. Could she somehow be bending her minds to get her way? No, of course not. It’s not like she was making a special exception for her, it’s just a classroom rule that as long as you have a brain to spare, phones are fine as long as they’re not disruptive. Besides, if she could control her teachers, she’d just give herself higher grades. Not that she necessarily needs it, but it would be nice to guarantee.
Still though, even without psychic powers, she has an influence on people around her, and she knows it. She thinks about all the people who stop and stare at her as she passes by. Not specific examples, but just in general. It happens everywhere she goes. She can’t help it, she’s just too big and eye catching. Of course people are gonna gawk, not that she can blame them. no matter what she tells herself, she’s not just a fairly normal high school student, she’s so much more. She’s an outlier. She’s a marvel. She’s unique.
