"I've got this," the first man up on the stage said as he pondered the twenty boxes and the waiting assistant. The Magician had taken his final bow, and the five lottery winners now had a chance to solve the puzzle in front of him, a gift from the women who did such things normally in their own performance troupe.
"What does that mean?" one of the other winners asked, dark skin and hair, dressed well enough for the company of the private island. "You a magician too?"
The first man choked back a laugh. "No! No." His British accent came through a little more clearly. "I do analysis for important people with a lot of money, if you catch my drift."
"Nice!" the third person said. "Call me Alice," she said with a smirk that emphasized her barely-there bikini and the assets within.
"Garret," the second man said, holding out a hand to be shook.
"Marty," the fourth lottery winner introduced himself. "Don't mind me, I'm not big on this, so if I don't win, I'm cool with that."
Luci apparently found that objectionable. "Hey!"
"Well," Marty said, "I'm gay."
This brought Luci up short. "Oh. Sorry. Fuck. That changes things."
He laughed. "Not really. It just means that if Mister Math over here has a poor choice, I'll take that one. The others get better odds, and my karma goes up, right?"
Luci thought about that. "You know what? I can work with that."
"I guess that leaves me," the last person said. "Harry. You never said your name," he addressed the first winner.
"Oh, Doyle," he said, shaking hands with the others. "So, you're all willing to let me figure all this out?"
"As long as you talk us through the math," Marty said. "I'd hate for you to abuse my offer of taking the worst odds."
"That, I can work with." Doyle cracked his knuckles. "So, as the old song goes, All you need is Love. You see, the solution to this puzzle, it starts with the unique boxes," he pointed out the relevant pieces as he named them. "U, X, M, O, V and P, they all occur only once in all the words used. U for lust. O and V for love, X for sexy, P for play and M for tame."
At this, Luci made some gestures and the relevant boxes moved into position.
"Now, after this, we have 2 options for each of the remaining letters - S, T, Y and A. Except L, and E each which has three. Of those, the Y uniquely exists as the lower box in Sexy and Play."
"But Gwen went into Sex and Fel into Play," Harry pointed out. How can you tell which is which?"
Doyle huffed. "That's the beauty of it. It doesn't matter. The whole point is that we only need the relevant body parts. Whose they are is just..." he rolled his hand for emphasis, "cosmetic."
Luci giggled. "Are you calling my sister and our co-workers cosmetic?"
"Yes?"
"I like you!" She agreed. "So, have a preference for which Y goes where?"
"Garret? Why don't you pick?" Doyle offered the man.
"Eh, left on the left, right on the right?" Garret shrugged. "I'm trusting you, man."
"But what does Love have to do with it?" Alice wondered.
Doyle gestured at the stack that consisted of an empty bottom, a box labeled V then O above it, then an empty top. "You see, 2 of the three L's are heads, while two of the three E's are feet. This gives us a two-thirds chance for each body part, and therefore a four-nine's chance that we'll get a complete woman." He turned to Luci. "I don't suppose we can assemble one stack, and open it up before assembling anyone else?
Luci laughed. "What? And play the Monty Haul Problem? No, I'm not going to make it easy on you."
Doyle laughed gently too. "I suppose so. So, let's put that L on top there, that one on top of Lust, and the last in the chest section of play."
"Done!" And Luci dud just that.
"As for the E's, those two can be feet, and that one is Gwen's chest, hopefully." He pointed out the relevant three boxes, and Luci levitated them into place.
Doyle sighed. "And that leaves S, T and A. Look, there's no way to choose here," he admitted. "We might as well flip a coin for each of the last pair.
"Or the rest of us can choose," Marty pointed out. "I mean, sure, you did the heavy lifting, but you did offer Garret here the chance to have a go. There's three pairs left, and three of us."
Alice agreed. "I'm game."
"Sure," Harry shrugged his agreement. "But while I'm not a math wiz, even I can tell the odds aren't great."
Luci nodded. "That's the gamble. But hey, magic is involved, so maybe you'll get lucky?"
Doyle scoffed. "The only way that each of us gets a full woman in our collection would be is the only mistake were between Blue and Black's heads, and if Green's chest is in her spot, leaving Blue and White's feet switched at worst. It's bad odds, no matter how you slice it."
There were some giggles at his joke before Doyle realized what he had said. "Wow, I walked right into that one, didn't I?"
"Yes, you did," Garret agreed. "Now, you three, pick a letter and slot it in, why don't you. We ain't got all night."
Alice sauntered up first. "A for Alice!" she announced. "You go there, and you go there!" she pointed at the two boxes, one floating to the position that might have been Fel's legs while the other went to Marsha's chest.
"S then," Harry said. "Hopefully that one is Gwen's head and that is Danni's legs," he pointed, and Luci moved the boxes into position.
"And finish off with the T's," came Marty. "Feet there and head there please."
"As you command!" Luci put the boxes into position, leaving them as five stacks of four. "So, any last minute changes?"
"No, this is as good as it's going to get," Doyle said. "There's nothing left but the music."
Everyone paused, looking up to the stage lights above, and the hidden speakers there-in. They were silent. "He totally would have," Luci muttered to herself. "If he wanted to be cliche and trite."
Doyle coughed, bringing everyone's attention to the here and now. "So, how do we proceed?"
"Everyone picks a stack and hopes for the best," Luci explained.
Garret slapped Doyle on the back. "You get Love, friend!" he said with a smile as he moved to Lust. "You said yourself it has the best odds, so take the chance!"
"Which one is worst?" Marty asked. "I said I would."
"Ah...." Doyle thought about it for a moment. "Actually, the rest are about equal. Every other word has a mix of letters that that has the two-thirds chance shared with Love balanced either two fifty-fifty chances in Lust or Tame - or one third balanced by having letters occur in the same place. It comes out to all other boxes having a one-sixth chance of a full woman."
"Uh, I don't think the math adds up," Alice said. "Four ninths for Love plus four times one sixth which is two thirds... Yeah, that's one and one ninth."
Doyle glared at her. "Math doesn't work like that, and I'm the professional."
"Sorry!" Alice threw up her hands in surrender. "I'm sorry!"
Marty took Tame, Alice slid up to Play while Harry took the last, Sexy.
"And now, let's see who wins, if anything!" Luci announced, and with a final snap of her fingers, opened all twenty doors at once.
"Damn!" That was the call of four different voices, while the fifth was a slightly resigned "Well."
In Lust, Joyce's head smiled from the top, while Danni's torso and legs were exactly where they should be. However, Marsha's white hair framed her face from the bottom of the pile. "Hey," she said, looking up. "What's up?"
"Yo," Garret waved a hand at the two heads.
In front of Harry, Gwen's head was in the only place it could be. Below it was Joyce's feet, toes pointed outward, then Gwen's legs. However, instead of a torso to complete a woman that was disarranged, red feet waited there. "Oh well," he said.
For Alice, Fel's red hair and face was in place, as was her body. However, Marsha's white-clad body was below Fel's, and Gwen's green feet rounded out the non-winning pile.
Marty, uncaring of the whole thing, found himself with a stack of Danni's feet, Fel's legs, Marsha's legs, and Gwen's body.
But for Doyle, the man with the best odds, things were slightly different.
True to expectation, Joyce's torso and legs were in place. At the top of the stack was Danni's smiling face, a mirror of her whole twin on the outside of the stacks, and at the bottom were Marsha's feet. Unlike the other stacks though, there were no internal dividers, and she stepped out, looking down at her new body. "Well," she said. "Looks like you won something," she said with a knowing smile.
"As for the rest of you," Luci pulled four envelopes out of her skintight costume, hading them to the four people who didn't win, "these are invites to some special and exclusive events. Consider them the consolation prize for the bad odds. I hope to see you there!"
"Maybe," Harry said, pocketing his, unopened. "Well, Doyle, you got lucky. Enjoy your prize."
"Have fun, man," Marty said with a wave as he turned and headed for the exit. "Maybe I'll see you around."
Alice took one last look at her mis-matched stack, then sighed. "Oh well. Maybe next time."
Garret walker beside her. "Well, if your evening is now free, perhaps you can join me?"
Alice pondered that for half a second. "Sure!" she agreed. "I'm sure we can find something to entertain us." The two of them left together.
Luci waved her hands, and sixteen boxes floated up and around her. "Well if you'll excuse me, I'm going to leave the stage and the props for you two," she announced. "I'll put these girls back together in some fashion, but as for you, Doyle, that's my sister's head there. So do be nice to her."
"I will," Doyle confirmed. "When should I return her?"
Luci shrugged as she waited for the last of the boxes to pass her into the darkness of backstage. "Eh, sometime before the end of summer?"
