The applause for Joy's new look took a while to die down. I let her enjoy the attention while I went back with the old prop and returned with a new one. "Don't worry folks," I drew attention to myself as I came back to the stage, "She'll be here all night! You'll get plenty of opportunity to enjoy the view as time passes."
Joy stopped showing off, and turned to look at what I came out with. She made a confused expression because she didn't recognize it. "What is that?" she asked.
"This," I said as I walked around the prop, "is what I like to call 'Break Time', if only because when I put some lovely volunteer or assistant into it, they get to take a break for the next performance."
"Oh!" Joy responded. "Wait, but what if I want to you my choice next?"
I didn't have to think about that. "Well then, I would have to put that one one hold, do something else, then restore you and let you do what you want!"
"Thanks! So, how does this work?"
I stepped back and let her and the audience take it in. It looked like several thin shelves between two pillars. On top was a small bag, which I retrieved. I opened it up and began to pull out small loops of black cloth. I stretched one to show that it could be done. "This one," I said, passing them to her as I told her where they went, "goes around your neck. These two around your wrists. This one over your waist. These two over your thighs."
She did as I said, bending over as needed with no regard for her body to slip them into place. "Now what?" she asked as I hung the bag from one of the sides of the prop.
"Now," I said, "stand here." I indicated a spot beside me, and she did. "Your arms please?" She turned and pointed them both at me, allowing me to take her hands. With a sharp twist though, I removed her hands! They popped right off, the black cloth of the band around them preventing anything unseemly from occurring. With them in hand (pun not intended), she looked at the stumps of her arms with surprise even as I placed one hand on the top shelf, and another on a lower one.
"Wow!" she said as her hands wiggled. "Neat!" She was so absorbed in that, she didn't notice when I approached her and quickly repeated the motion, only this time with her head. It too popped off, leaving her standing still as I placed Joy's head on a different shelf from her hands. She looked around, mouth agape as I returned to her body. This time, I put my hands at her sides and twisted off her torso. The unclothed portion of her body and the attached arms were put onto another empty shelf. The arms relaxed as I did so.
I went back to her lower half and this time twisted her legs to the sides - one pointing right and the other left in a way that defied the way a body should move.
With that done, I lifted up her hips by the sides, spinning them around to show off all sides to the audience, as well as the black fabric that covered her stomach and the stumps of her legs. That, I placed onto the lowest shelf, below all her other body parts. Finally, I returned, picked up her legs, one in each hand, and put them on other shelves as well. Her right leg, I bent at the knee so that the stump and her foot were both resting on the shelf, while the left leg was laid flat.
I stepped back to show off my handiwork. At the top was her right hand, followed by her left leg. Her torso was next, moving gently with her breath. Below was her head, then her left hand sharing a shelf with her right leg. At the bottom was her hips.
"I must say," she finally found her voice, "this is actually relaxing. I don't have to stand anymore!"
I took one side of the shelving unit and began to walk in a circle, taking it with me. "I'm glad you feel that way," I said as the audience showed their appreciation. "It's the only real break you'll get this evening."
"Well, I hope it doesn't end too soon," she replied. "I mean, with my helpless body and all that."
I rolled my eyes as we returned to the starting orientation. "You keep saying that," I shook my head. "And someone might just take you up on the offer."
"That's the plan!" she retorted.
"Well, time for the next little thing," I ignored her as I slid the entire thing off to one side, where Joy could watch. "For this, I'll need one, and only one volunteer. Who wants to go?"
