Terry was all but comatose at the end of the couch. His face was tormented. He knew what had happened and that he was responsible for all but serving up Dana on a platter to her captors. He'd tried to communicate what he'd seen and knew, but there was a disconnect between his mouth and his brain. His drug fuelled imagination was working in overtime, imagining the tortures she was being subjected too despite it only being a couple of hours since the abduction.
Emily sat at the other end of the couch. Her mind was whirling. She had just learned that her roommate, and her roommate's family, had superpowers. Even though they didn't call them that, that's what they were. In hindsight, it explained a few odd occurrences in the past couple of months like the top shelf of the kitchen cupboards actually having something on it. Neither she nor Dana could reach that high, and they didn't have a step stool for some reason. One day she came home and the toaster they had never used since they had gotten a toaster oven was up there.
Detachment and stretching, probably the cartooniest of all powers to have, it figured that Dana would get them; after all, her figure was almost comical in proportions. The only person that that Emily could think of with a more naturally unreal figure was Rebecca who had the same power, go figure.
Emily had been given the short version of the family history as it pertained to the current situation. The thought that the field she wanted to go into could imbue such a power, or Jason's incredible strength, it made Emily lightheaded. That was the stuff of fantastic science fiction. To actually see it in front of her face gave her chills in a good way.
The detective came out of the kitchen. "I know you're going to freak out," he said. He sat in an arm chair beside the couch. "It's a lot to take in; especially about someone you're close to. I know you and Dana have been pretty much best friends for years. She didn't tell you to protect not only her, but you as well."
"I'm not going to freak out," Emily insisted. "I think it's awesome that Dana and her family are superheroes."
"Hold on, take it easy," the detective said. "We can all get badly hurt. Nobody's a super hero here, except maybe Jason. I wish I had his power."
"I'm not worried detective, they'll get Dana back; no problems," Emily said confidently. "How can the Nazis compete against super human powers? They've tried and failed in the past. The only reason they got Dana is because they drugged her."
"She drugged herself, Emily" the detective corrected her.
Emily shook her head. "I've known Terry a long time. That was not grass they were smoking. The two of them could probably smoke a quarter between them and nobody would be the wiser. I've never seen Terry like this, and I've seen him fucked up on a lot of shit."
The detective thought about that. "Emily," he asked. "If you could find the roaches from what they smoked, could you please give them to me? I'd like to get them looked at, find out what the two of them smoked." He rose to his feet. "I have to go get some information on that license plate number you gave us. Thanks for your help."
