Carmella had her arm around her daughters shoulder who was weaping quietly. "It's alright honey," she soothed. "Sometimes rough patches happen. You just have to get through them."
"He said we shouldn't be together." Rebecca sobbed. "He said I've become a worse person, and he's right. Look at me, I'm a mess."
"You're not a mess dear," Carmella comforted her. "You can dig yourself out of whatever hole you've gotten yourself into. I've seen you do it before. And he doesn't want to not be with you. You can tell when he looks at you. He's hurting."
"He hurt me a lot." Rebecca said angrilly.
"You hurt him first." Carmella pointed out.
Rebecca hung her head, "I did, and I didn't mean it; it just came out. I knew it was wrong as sonn as I said it. Why didn't I do something about it then?"
"It's been a hell of an evening for all of us. You were angry and nothing constructive would have come of it. It would have been worse than it is now."
"How can I fix this mom?" Rebecca pleaded. "He's the best one yet, and my best friend. I don't want to end up like you and dad."
Carmella laughed. "This is nothing like your father and I. There's a lot of history there. What you have here is but a flash in the pan. Your love for each other, it's still fresh and new. It burns hot, but with heat comes the occasional flare up. That's what this is." Carmella paused. "However, that being said, you can't ignore what this has brought out. The things he mentioned, they might be brought up in anger now, but they do bother him, and the fact that you two have to all but call it quits to talk about them tells me that you aren't communicating. A relationship is more than just physical and emotional compatibility, dear. It's also a hell of a lot of work and understanding. You have to talk to each other, not at each other; that means listening too. Now be honest with me. Did the things he say have any truth to them?"
Rebecca nodded. "Some of them had a bit of truth."
"Well then, that's something you can work on." Carmella said. "It'll make your relationship stronger and show him you care about his voice."
"I'm not going to run back to his arms mom. I can't." Rebecca said. "It hurts too much and I don't want to be dismissed again."
"I never said you should dear," Carmella replied. "For this to be right he'll have to swallow his pride and come to you. You just have to show him the best that you can be; what he's missing. Then you'll both feel better."
Rebecca sniffled. "How do you know that will work?"
"Years of not doing that with your father before we split up." Carmella replied.
