After the unpleasant excesses of triumphant Women's Lib in the 1990's, both sexes recoiled violently from its puritanical policies.  It was symbolic of this complete reversal of public opinion concerning a “woman's place” that President Savage, in his inauguration of 2012, led his lovely, stylishly restrained, wife on a leash to the platform where he would take the Oath of Office.

The press reported Sally Savage's bondage favorably and in considerable detail, and on national television she described her complete satisfaction with the way her husband handled her.  “I'm sure the Age of Bondage has arrived,” she declared, “and it suits me just fine!”

Setting the Style

The shapely brunette, 20 years junior to the new President, allowed the cameras to explore her costume in minute detail.  A good part of the nation and the world thus saw in 3-D color the way her leather miniskirt hugged her supple hips and how an open-tipped bra allowed her luscious nipples to thrust against the transparent gauze of her blouse.

Viewers everywhere saw the jewel-studded cuffs that manacled her wrists behind her and the glossy leather single-glove within which her interlaced fingers formed a dainty, useless fist.  They admired the stiletto-heeled boots that shaped her feet and brought out the soft, ripe contours of her lovely legs.  The high golden collar about her throat was dazzling in the sunshine.

The new First Lady told an interviewer she hoped that the length of her ankle-chain (a full 15 inches) didn't suggest that her husband was hopelessly old-fashioned.  “He made it this long so I can keep up with the timetable today,” she explained.  “At home, of course, it's always the latest thing, — an six-inch hobble.”

With an embarrassed smile, she admitted that the President had insisted she wear a body strap beneath her skirt, and one enterprising cameraman was able to get a shot from below the inaugural platform, showing a heavy strap nestled tightly between her smooth-skinned thighs.  Although this was never admitted, experts later decided that it must have been equipped with tickler-knobs, and the “Sally-Strap” soon became a runaway bestseller around the country.

Bondage at Leisure

Most historians agree that the practice of keeping one's wife in some sort of restraint came partly as a result of the increased leisure time the new American affluence brought to all.  With the advent of the three-day week and the violent reaction against the Libbers' castrating policies of ten years earlier, it was natural that men should spend more time with their women — and that this should be an unmistakably dominant relationship.

Nonviolent, consenting bondage (as contrasted with sado-masochistic practices) had “come out of the dungeon” much earlier, of course, but awaited this particular confluence of historical trends to blossom.  By 2004, the polls revealed that nearly half of the country's women were already in bondage, or looking forward to it, and by 2009 the figure had reached 82%.  The remainders were primarily older women who could not adjust to the new lifestyle.

Television soon began to feature the new practice, and “Bondage Bride” was on its way to becoming the longest running daytime serial in history.  Books and movies had taken up the theme much earlier, and now TV, the most conservative of the media, signaled the country's complete acceptance of bondage.

By 2008, the corner Bondage Boutique was a fixture in every American town and city.  Fashion columns in the newspapers explained new forms of arm-restraint, and how-to-do-it manuals were available everywhere.  Even those women who didn't like bondage personally - and it has always been a person's right to reject it - found themselves wearing jewelry symbolic of bondage, simply because it was the universal fashion.  Without a steel collar, a pair of matched salve-bracelets, or an ankle cuff, a woman was completely out of style.

The three-day work week gave men much more time to devote to their womenfolk and bondage was the price women gladly paid for this added attention.  Sex became something that men and women nourished through the long hours of the day, rather than compressing it into a frantic 15 minutes late at night.  It was the endless variety of new forms of restraint to be explored that made this possible.

Effects on Society

With bondage a constant feature of everyday life, a good many new features were added to the American scene.  There was a surge in women's professional sports as the sight of beautiful women competing in bondage against each other attracted huge audiences.  Wrestling, handicap racing, tag football, and even swimming soon had dozens of professional teams, leagues, and, of course, World Championships.

Colleges sponsored bondage teams composed of four men and four coeds.  During a match, the men from each college would put the girls from the opposing team into bondage, with judges assigning scores for both speed and novelty.  Michigan and UCLA became the national leaders, and their final match in the spring of 2013 was televised to an audience of nearly 90 million.

Fads in bondage came and went.  For some reason, dog muzzles became popular in Milwaukee.  For a while, tattooing was the rage in Florida.  Twinning seized the attention of Chicagoans.  In Texas, where everything is bigger and better, girls were trained to walk around on boot-stilts that raised them as much as five feet off the ground.

Secretaries, receptionists, telephone operators, and salesgirls learned to do their jobs while hampered by chains and straps.  Each major airline devised a special bondage uniform for its stewardesses, much to the delight of the passengers.  Female cabbies would be bound behind the wheel for an eight-hour stint.  The half-time show at every major football game featured drill teams of lovely coeds who carried out precision maneuvers while restrained in the most bizarre bondage their coaches could dream up.

For collectors, bondage magazines of the 1950-75 era became the focus of much attention.  At one widely publicized auction, a 1973 issue of HOGTIE in mint condition sold for more than $1000.  There was a Betty Page cult and original drawings by Bishop and others were expensive prizes that only the very wealthy could afford.

Bondage Benefits

Both the divorce rate and the crime rate plummeted as bondage became more popular.  With carefree premarital sex fully accepted, couples held off marriage until they were sure of each other.  After marriage, the well-bondaged bride scarcely had opportunity to be unfaithful, and her husband had little reason to play around when his own wife was under strict control and always willingly available.

Crimes of violence decreased as the sale of bondage equipment went up, suggesting that sexual frustration had been a chief reason for such acts in earlier years.  The city streets became safe agin for evening strollers, and it was a common sight to see a man leading his wife, hobbled and tightly trussed, out for an after-dinner walk.

Neighbors became friendlier when several men would tether their wives to hitching posts outside the corner bar, allowing the women to chatter and gossip harmlessly while the men enjoyed their beer and TV sports inside.

Psychiatrists reported a sharp drop in business.  There was less delinquency as the family again became an attractive center of meaningful activity.  The new bondage-equipment industry flourished, and sales of special household appliances for hampered housewives added significantly to the GNP.

Cosmetic surgery, special diets, and al sorts of grooming aids became more important as the semi-nudity required by bondage made women (and their men!), increasingly conscious of physical beauty.  For the more well-endowed women — and for those whom surgery made well-endowed - bondage involving the breasts took on a special fascination.  A number of means by which leashes and other articles could be attached directly to the bosoms became popular.  Not a few women had their breasts pierced directly behind the nipples so they could be permanently infibulated.  For many, the forked breast leash became a treasured status symbol.

Domestic Discipline

The course of human relationships is never completely smooth, however, and the question of how rebellious, lazy or shrewish wives should be disciplined was hotly debated.  In addition to articles of modish restraint, there were many items a husband could purchase that were meant specifically for mild punishment.  Few homes were without at least a small collection of them.

A wide variety of gags could be found in bondage boutiques, ranging from those which would simply muffle the wearer's speech to several types that would jack the jaws apart, fill the entire mouth, and generally produce a modest amount of discomfort.

Disciplinary helmets were popular too, as were decorative blindfolds and intricate metal head cages.  There were also sheaths to hold arms and legs doubled or to encase the entire body while the snugly cinched prisoner reflected upon her sins.  Braces to hold various parts of the body motionless, could also be bought.  Special stocks and hamper bars, able to stretch a naughty wife's arms or legs apart at adjustable distances appealed to some husbands.

It was considered a compliment to a woman's spirit and stamina when her husband presented her a particularly stern disciplinary article for her birthday.  Many of the larger bondage boutiques opened special “punishment parlors” where men could bring their wayward wives to be fitted with the latest implements of chastisement.  The old ball-and-chain came in for a revival, as did the brank.

Beyond physical techniques, many husbands made extensive use of discipline-by-embarrassment.  In many residential areas one could see sturdy pillories erected in parks or on street corners, where errant women could be stationed for a few hours or a day and exposed to public ridicule.

One could be sure that a woman being led down the street, completely nude, except for her bondage, was being punished for some infraction of her husband's rules.  In extreme cases, she might even be forced to display her sexual appetites in public.  Having been fed a powerful aphrodisiac and then fitted with a vibrating dildo, her husband would take her to the park where her sensuous moans and frantic writhing would attract the amused stares of everyone.

Finally, it must be admitted that there was an underground market which supplied more unpleasant devices for those who felt their wives deserved more severe discipline.  One could arrange to buy itching cremes and powders, broad-lashed whips and scourges, and even electrical garments that would deliver unpleasant, tingling shocks to the wearer's tenderest parts whenever she failed to heed their stringent limitations.

No matter how unpleasant it was, though, American women learned to interpret discipline as solid proof of their husbands' love and concern.  In fact, the wife who did not undergo some special punishment at least once a week would begin to wonder if she was not losing favor with her husband.  In consequence, it became a standard piece of advice to young brides that an occasional show of rebelliousness was a good idea; it would certainly attract her husband's attention, require him to pay extra attention to her body, and most often result later on in a particularly satisfying romp in the hay.

Presidential Punishment

Domestic discipline became the hottest news of the year in 2013, when it was discovered that Sally Savage, the First Lady of the country, had carelessly let slip several bits of confidential political information to a foreign ambassador.  She had been seated beside him at a state dinner and allowed him to ply her with too much champagne.

(The fact that her arms had been bound, so that she had to drink whenever he held a glass to her lips, did not excuse her at all.  The guilty ambassador was immediately expelled from the country, but Sally was left to face the music.)

Screaming newspaper headlines and irate editorials literally forced President Savage to declare a two-week period of severe discipline for his beauteous bride.  Under more pressure, he also agreed to allow full press coverage of the event so her punishment could be of “educational value” to the entire nation.

Public interest mounted rapidly, and before Sally's discipline was to begin thousands and thousands of letters were received at the White House with suggestions for new and imaginative forms of punishment that might be used.  Many were accompanied by diagrams and photographs, the best of which were later published in a best-selling volume called “Suggestions for Sally”.  But the President had his own plans, and ignored nearly all of his official duties while carrying out his wife's sentence.

A detailed program describing each day's torments was published.  From nine to eleven each morning, her discipline would emphasize physical exertion; from two to four in the afternoon, the object would be humiliation; and from eight to ten in the evening, her punishment would be based on sexual arousal and frustration.

It was estimated later that close to 800 million people around the world saw at least part of Sally's punishment each day, and a substantial number of them tuned in religiously every day.  In colorful 3-D TV-holography, aided by zoom lenses and spot mikes, they were able to see every detail and to hear every grunt and moan.

On the first day, they saw the President's wife, fully clothed and free of restraint, march stiffly into the Oval Office and announce to her husband that she was prepared to undergo her discipline.  Then the bondage coaches from Michigan and UCLA, who had been especially selected for this job, stopped forward to take charge of her.

Quickly spreadeagled between two pillars on the front steps of the White House, she was stripped nude and given ten ritual lashes by her husband.  After that, the Disciplinary Assistants (or “DA's as they became to be called) carefully put her arms and legs into doubling sheaths, lacing and strapping them to excruciating constriction, so the President could lead her about the South Lawn on a leash like a dog.

Two Weeks of Torment

The afternoon saw her decked out in heavy serving chains and little else as she was forced to serve tea to a visiting delegation of Congressmen.  And in the evening, viewers were fascinated to see the First Lady suspended by her wrists in the East Room, her shapely legs spread wide by a hamper bar, and, to hear her sensuous moans, as the DA's tantalized her jerking, twitching body, with feathers and silken scarves.

Over the next two weeks, Sally Savage was subjected to a bewildering variety of torments, none of them so severe as to exhaust or disable her but all distinctly unpleasant and extremely chastening.  It was noted that millions of women around the country were inspired to unusual rebelliousness by what they saw, seeking to distract their menfolk from the glowing screen and perhaps to experience themselves the punishments they had seen inflicted on Sally.

On the last day of her discipline, the First Lady was led in chains behind the Presidential limousine from the White House to the Capitol, attended by mobs of cheering spectators.  In the afternoon, nude but for a viciously tight body strap and with her arms drawn up behind her in a “back–prayer” to make her magnificent breasts jut out deliciously, she was forced to address a joint session of Congress on the subject, “Duties of the President's Wife.”

The Freedom of Bondage

The discipline of Sally Savage marked the total confirmation of female bondage as a permanent feature of American life.  Relations between the sexes are now stabilized in the most satisfactory form yet devised, and the rapid adoption of bondage by other countries seems to assure world peace for the foreseeable future.

We may expect changes in form, naturally.  The present movement to legalize male bondage will doubtless result in greater freedom as each married couple is allowed to decide which partner will be dominate and which submissive.  But the basic pattern has been thoroughly established, and the ancient philosopher's paradox, “only in chains are you free,” has come true in a way he could never have imagined.
