The Syra Hovering Reefs were, among the many breathtaking locales in the land of Aionios, one of the most impressive. Dozens of brown, craggy islands hovered above a near-endless drop below like a series of buoys floating on a vast and unknowable sea. With only a series of zip lines connecting the rock formations to each other and a heart-sinking drop below, it took a brave soul to even traverse the area. If that wasn’t enough to scare most people off, this area was also the home to Keves Castle, the headquarters for one half of two nations locked in a fruitless and endless war. Guarding the castle were the soldiers of Colony 11, an infamously vicious group of soldiers led by none other than Undying Blade Ashera, the commander of the colony. However, commanding wasn’t on Ashera’s mind today. Instead, her mind was much more focused on-
“Girl time!”
The merciless killer commander opened her arms in welcome and grinned at the three companions accompanying her.
Eunie, Mio, and Sena stared at Ashera with varying degrees of confusion and annoyance. Being the more feminine half of Ouroboros, the three adventurers had a pretty good idea about the “girl” part of the phrase Ashera had been repeating to them all day, but were a bit foggy about what the “time” entailed.
“Yeah love, you still haven’t explained to us what it is you’re talking about,” Eunie stated with a biting flatness to her voice. The brash healer made sure her annoyance was conveyed in her tone. It was bad enough to have her time wasted, but no one could get under her skin the same way Ashera could, making her frustration even worse. Her brown hair and High Entian head wings shook back and forth as she looked around for the reason why she and her friends were dragged to what seemed like the middle of nowhere.
“Agreed,” Mio added, “If you were just lonely and wanted some traveling buddies to follow you to this isolated rock, we would have just come with you if you asked.” Unlike Eunie, Mio was much more patient and understanding. Her caring nature for others would lead her across the whole world if it meant making the world a better place… Though she did wish Ashera would just spit her motives out already.
Sena tilted her head and checked the time on her Iris device. As usual, her head was up in the clouds, metaphorically as well as literally in this case. “So, is 06:29 when the girl time starts, or is it like an all hour thingy? I made plans to do squats with Lanz in like 30 minutes…”
“Ah, don’t you worry those silly little heads of yours!” Ashera’s tone matched the casual way she walked between Mio and Sena and placed each of her arms around the girls’ shoulders. “You won’t need a workout after this anyway…” Ashera’s characteristic aloofness stood in contrast to her lethal nature. She could kill a man as nonchalantly as she chatted with the gang, and despite the friendship between her and her three companions, the girls couldn’t help but be a bit put off by her unpredictability.
“I won’t…?” Sena asked, straining ever so slightly from Ashera’s tight hold on her. “Are you sure? Cuz this was gonna be like a whole body thing. Arms, legs, glutes, the whole thing!”
Eunie crossed her arms and leaned toward Ashera confrontationally. “Are you gonna tell us what the spark this is all about, or do I have to employ some advanced Kevesi interrogation techniques to get you to spill it?”
“Oh Eunie, don’t threaten me with a good time,” Ashera teased, causing Mio and Sena to awkwardly look away. “Besides, I’m about to show you the big surprise! Don’t you like surprises?”
“Depends on the kind of surprise,” Eunie flatly stated, “This isn’t gonna involve killing a bunch of people, or monsters, or Consuls, or whatever else, right?”
Ashera feigned a look of shock. “What? Killing? Me?”
Eunie’s eyes narrowed as she stared back at her.
The commander looked disappointed that she didn’t even get a verbal response “...Right. Well, you’ll see in just a few moments!” Ashera declared, releasing Sena and Mio from her grasp. She turned and began walking toward the large vertical rock structure at the center of the floating island.
Sena called after Ashera, “Ooh, is the surprise a cool accessory? Or maybe a new recipe for Manana to try?! Oh, or some cool new workout gear!”
“Nope, nope, and nope!” Ashera yelled over her shoulder, “Keep guessing though!”
While Sena continued to shout guesses across the island, Mio fanned herself with her hand. “Ugh, I hope the surprise is a nice oasis. It’s so dry and hot up here!” Her triangular ears drooped toward her white head of hair.
Keeping her eyes on Ashere’s backside in a totally heterosexual way, Eunie more or less ignored her friends and thought out loud, “She isn’t usually this coy… somethin’s up…”
Ashera turned a corner around the rock in the middle of the island, disappearing behind the monolith. Soft, electrical humming could be heard soon after. The three girls looked at each other for just a brief moment before the source of the sound came screeching into sight! The girls instinctively summoned their Blades and got into combat stances, recognizing that a mechanical shape was quickly approaching! However, just before reaching them, the machine came to a stop, a cloud of dust rising up along its path.
Ashera sat up from her position on the back of the machine. “Hey girls, check this baby out!”
The shape was one they had all seen numerous times before. The massive front arms, the smaller back ones, the blue lights, the white “face” with red eyes; it was the Equites model of Keves Levnis. Though this was a common model of combat mech, it bore a unique modification that immediately caught the three pairs of eyes looking at it. A standard Equites had four limbs with a wheel at each end, and the front arms and wheels were much bigger than the back. Instead of having a wheel at the end of each frontal arm, the two arms each held onto one end of a large, metal cylinder which was even wider than the normal wheels. The Levnis rolled forward a couple feet, like it was showing off its new “wheel.”
“Whaddya think?” Ashera smiled with a mix of pride and hints of menace.
Eunie’s mouth hung open in a way that was more flabbergasted than amazed. “...Snuff is that thing for? You just wanted to show us you ruined a perfectly good Levnis?”
Mio withdrew her Blade and scratched her head. “Well… I can’t say I’ve seen anything like it before, so I suppose I am surprised.”
“Yeah,” added Sena, “It’s… unique! Like a big rolling pin!”
Ashera chuckled. Her deep, performative laugh set the other girls on edge. “Hahaha! I’m sure you’ll have something more to say about it once I show you what it can really do…!” With that, she patted the Levnis, signaling it to charge straight in Mio’s direction!
“Whoa!” Mio exclaimed her surprise and jumped to the side with her cat-like reflexes just in time to avoid the sudden charging attack! The Levnis left a completely smooth stretch of ground along the path it had just traveled. Mio looked down, then back up at Ashera, who was already turning the machine she piloted back around to face them. “What the-”
“Snuff was that?!” Eunie yelled at Ashera, “You tryin’ to pave a new road over us?!”
“Not quite,” Ashera replied while revving up the Levnis’s engine, “Just sharing a little Colony 11 rite of passage!” A persistent smug grin didn’t leave her face as the Levnis launched forward at alarming speeds, this time heading right toward Sena!
Sena tilted her head. “A rite of pass- wait, heading right toward Sena?!” The bubbly gym-bro in a cute girl’s body froze in place like an Anlood in headlights. If a split second decision wasn’t made, she would be crushed harder than someone hit by her hammer! Luckily for her, she didn’t have to use her singular brain cell on this decision. Unluckily for Mio, her natural defender instincts kicked in at this moment.
“Gyah!” Mio dove at Sena with her arms out, pushing her friend out of the line of fire. However, this just meant that she was midair in exactly the place Sena had just been! Her mind didn’t even need to think about how she was going to land on her feet and dash-
