“Oh my god, Mom, I can’t believe you tricked me in to coming here…” Valerie whined.
“I think it’ll be fun!” Janet cheerfully replied, “We’ll get to spend some quality time together as mother and daughter!”
The two women walked through a set of automatic sliding doors and into a massive department store full of all sorts of kitchen-related appliances. “...Quality time in the Mega Kitchen Super Store? When we went shopping, this is not what I had in mind! At all!”
Janet responded in a sing-songy voice, “Buuuut you’ve been complaining about how the fridge hasn’t been working right for the whole past week. Don’t you want to help solve that?”
Valerie crossed her arms. “No. I want to buy clothes. I’m going to the back of the store to mope.”
“Alright, have fun dear!”
As the pair forked off in two separate directions, Janet couldn’t help but chuckle to herself. Watching Valerie was almost like watching an old video recording of herself back when she was nineteen. Of course, those days of rebellion were long behind her. She much preferred to be gentle, comforting, and calming now that she was getting older.
One thing that hadn’t changed much, however, was her looks. Years of experience had given her the ability to spot all sorts of wandering eyes staring at her when they thought she wasn’t looking. She was partly to blame of course, what with the low-cut blouse she was wearing and form-fitting skirt. Showing off her body and being a flirt still gave her a thrill, even if she’d sometimes go too far and embarrass her daughter with it. Scanning the store, she found a younger man in the store’s uniform averting his eyes from her. He’d be the perfect one to ask.
“Pardon me, young man? Do you know where the refrigerators are?” She purred sweetly.
The employee’s face got a bit pinker. “O-Oh, um, I-I’m new here, but I think they’re this way…? I-If you’d like to follow me-“
“Oh, that would be lovely of you,” cooed Janet. She followed the man through the jungle of appliances and electronics to her desired section. The selection was massive, with refrigerators filling out an entire aisle of the store. In a perplexing lack of workplace safety, some were even stacked on top of shelves that nearly went up to the ceiling. In fact, there was one that would go perfectly with the rest of Janet’s interior decor placed right on the highest shelf…
“Oooooh, could you get that one down?” Janet asked, pointing to a fridge on the very top shelf.
“Uhhhhhh…” the employee hesitated for a moment, then looked back at her and found himself unable to refuse, “Sssssure! Let me just get the forklift and get it down for you.”
The man walked away, thinking, “Surely a forklift couldn’t be that hard to operate for the first time…”
Janet patiently waited until the employee haphazardly drove the forklift back down the aisle. The older woman once again pointed out the fridge she wanted, then returned to admiring the other merchandise while the employee did his thing.
As it turned out, operating a forklift for the first time was much harder than he anticipated. After a couple of sweaty minutes of finagling the machine, he finally got the little forky things under the fridge. Then, slowly, carefully, he pulled it out and away from the shelf. His nerves caused his hands to jitter and shake on the controls, fumbling around with what he imagined the right motions were. Then, the minute it was fully off the shelf, it started to slide off…
Janet, blissfully unaware of what was happening above, mused to herself. “Y’know, now that I think about it, this one down here might be better-“
