Jess Martin huddled over the door of the chain-link fence, working away at picking the padlock closing it off to the rest of the world. The barbed wire at the top kept her from trying to climb over it. Sarah had rolled her eyes when Jess decided to learn how to pick locks, but over the years it had come in handy over and over again.
“Yes!” Jess let out a triumphant hiss when the immensely satisfying sound and feel of the lock coming undone and popping open came. She pumped her fist before gently pushing the door open and taking a single step past the threshold.
From a distance the twenty-two-year-old woman looked like anyone else who might be out for a chilly fall night. Jess wore a good pair of jeans, a navy blue sweatshirt, and a long sleeved flannel shirt underneath it. Her brown hair was tied into a tight ponytail and mostly hidden beneath a baseball cap. On her feet were a pair of knee-high, no-heel black boots. Those boots crunching on the occasional fallen leaf were all Jess heard as she dashed deeper into the compound, hiding behind the odd tree as she drew close.
It was an out of the way place where farmland met the outskirts of suburbia, only really accessible only by back roads. One of those cheaply made prefabricated sets of blocky buildings that were just a level or two above a classic army Quonset Hut.
The biggest building, it was almost like a barn in the way it seemed to loom above everything else, was a tempting target. But no, it was too obvious a target. Jess would make her way there if her actual target didn’t have any of the evidence she needed, but she strongly suspected that the building with the most evidence would be the “office” type structure next to the barn. The only structure with two stories and a back door in the compound. That was where the real evidence would be stored. Jess would bet her life on it.
Finally making it up to that backdoor after glimpsing a man in a dark outfit patrolling the compound, Jess got ready to pick another lock. First she tried to simply open the door, just in case nobody had locked it. No luck. So she huddled over the doorknob and got back to work.
This one was much easier to get past than the first one had been. Jess had it open in less than a minute. From there she carefully opened the door, as quietly as she could manage, and took a cautious step inside before closing it just as quietly.
That was when they struck.
Three men were suddenly there in the room with the snooping woman. At least one of them must have come from the next room over, and at least one more was probably hiding on the other side of a desk positioned to jut out from one wall. Jess didn’t know, and never would. She was too focused on shutting the door sneakily enough to notice them at all until it was too late.
Jess found herself grabbed around the arms and wrenched away from the door. She had exactly enough time to recognize that there was one arm around her stomach and another over her chest, both pinning her own limbs to her torso. The other two men made their moves before she could even scream, with the second rushing up to shove a mouth-filling spongy material directly past her teeth and then holding it in there, and the third getting a vice-like grip around her ankles before she could launch even a single kick at anyone.
“MMAAAUUUHHHH!” She screamed too late for it to be anything other than a muffled cry as she was carried into the next room. There was struggling, of course. Why wouldn’t Jess struggle as hard as she could? But it didn’t matter. The men obviously knew what they were doing and had way too tight a hold on her body.
There was an unfolded futon in the room Jess was carried to. The man holding onto her went straight to it, collapsing on top of it with his captive underneath. Trapping Jess’s body under the weight of his own. The hands holding her head briefly left her, but were back before she could spit it out.
She felt tape being wrapped below her knees a moment later, reducing her ability to do any more kicking. They didn’t touch her ankles though. That was weird. In a minute there was more tape above the knees too. Next she was sat up and tape wrapped around her arms and wrists, securing her firmly in bondage.
Then came the inevitable gag, wrapped around her head over and over again to trap the thing inside her mouth there for the foreseeable future.
Jess Martin had been tied up a lot in her life. So she could say with plenty of experience backing her opinion that these guys really knew what they were doing!
Once they had Jess taped up to their satisfaction they took a few seconds to rifle through her pockets. Her protests were predictably ignored. She could only watch as they took her phone, ID, lock-pick kit, and pepper spray outside with him.
“Phone’s already off,” one of the men said. It was the first time any of them spoke at all. He chuckled. “You thought nobody would be able to track you if you didn’t have this on, right? You didn’t want to leave any evidence that you snuck in. Guess that’s backfiring on you right now, huh?”
Jess didn’t respond. Don’t engage with the henchmen. That was one of her rules. She used to try taking opportunities like this to pump them for information, but it was almost never reliable enough to act on. The henchmen that were competent enough to be told everything were usually the ones who were too smart to be tricked into talking. So all she did in response to the man’s taunting was glower and glare at the dark wall.
It did not help that he was probably right about keeping her phone off being a mistake.
But that didn’t mean she had no chance. She’d made other backup plans in case she got caught. More than one person knew what her plans were for the night, and her ride was still waiting at the meeting spot they agreed on. That was her cousin, Jeri, who would leave and call the police if she didn’t make it there by a certain time.
One of the men, the one who seemed to be in charge, left the small room. He pulled out a phone and started making a call as he walked through the door. Jess started straining her ears to try and listen in, but…
“Is it just me,” said one of the other goons. He wore a smirk as he said it, as if he knew something Jess didn’t. “Or does she not seem as worried as someone tied up by criminals should be?”
“She probably thinks she has backup coming,” answered the first speaker. “Either the cops, or one of her little pals that’s supposed to call the cops if she doesn’t call them by a certain time. Right? I think it’s the boyfriend and the best friend that are waiting back in town and a cousin that drove you out here, right?”
Jess froze. That was way too much information for them to get exactly right. How did they know that much?
“Ooooooooo,” taunted one of the two. Jess honestly didn’t catch which one. “I think she just realized how much trouble she’s in.”
With one gloved hand he grasped Jess by the chin and made her look up at him. She could barely see in the dim light, but that smirk was a lot wider now. A full, ear-to-ear grin.
“You want to know how we know all that, honey? Or why we were waiting for you, or how come there was only one guy patrolling around outside? It’s because someone ratted you out.”
What? No. That was ridiculous. Claire, Jeri, and Brendan had been through everything with her. These jokers seriously expected her to believe that one of them would hand her over to a bunch of crooks?
“Don’t believe me? Well, what would you say if I told you that I know your panic word is ‘oranges?’ Or that your cousin Jeri drives a ratty old RAV4? Or that your friend Claire drove all the way back from college the next state over just to help you out tonight? I even know that your boyfriend Brendan doesn’t like the restaurant you and your crew of meddling kids like to have your little case closed celebrations at? How would I know all of that if someone didn’t tell it to me?”
Jess could only stare, stunned.
“That’s enough,” said the leader as he stepped back into the room. “The place is scrubbed clean and everything’s set to go. Get her moving. We’re leaving.”
Jess had no way to stop the two taunters from hauling her up by the shoulders and frogmarching her out of the building. That explained why they didn’t tape up her ankles before. This way she could still walk instead of needing to be carried. She struggled and protested, but there was only so much she could do. They had no trouble keeping her on track.
They had no trouble continuing to taunt her either.
“That’s right, you nosy bitch. One of your pals got sick of how you keep getting into trouble and putting the rest of them in danger. So that person, whoever they may be, managed to get in contact with us.”
“We had to move everything out,” added the other jerk. Both of them kept their voices low. “Huge pain in the ass. That’s why this place is so quiet.”
Jess was starting to breathe hard now, on the verge of panicking. By the time they made it to their car and stuffed her into the trunk she was screaming and fighting as hard as she could. It didn’t matter. They had her in there without any issue. The only kick she landed was a light one on one of the taunter’s legs. He wasn’t even made at it, he just laughed.
They finished by taping her ankles together, and then folded them up so they could wrap even more tape to frog-tie her. Jess was still yelling at this point, promising that she would get out of this and find them.
No response. They just shut the trunk. The engine started up a moment later, making the trunk shake. It shook even more when the car started moving, taking Jess away from both the compound and everything she knew. And all she could do was squirm in all that tape and wonder who had sold her out.
Was it Claire? Her lifelong best friend who had been growing less and less patient with Jess’s cases for years?
Jeri? Who had been at the periphery of some pretty intense family drama that left her with some hard feelings and possibly in need of cash?
Or was it Brenden? Jess had known him the shortest of anyone, and he’d been feeling neglected lately. But badly enough to betray her?
Who was it? Who could it possibly have been?
All Jess Martin knew for sure was that she had miscalculated. Badly.
Now she was going to pay the price.
