When Stability returned it rapidly became clear that in some ways society had not only stagnated, but regressed.

Loretta stared at her accountant, unsure of what she had just heard him say.

“What do you mean, they forgot?”

John gave her an earnest, sheepish, happy shrug. “Apparently, on the day after the deadline, Mrs. Brenner’s lawyer came into his office and found the paperwork he was supposed to file.”

Loretta stood. She paced around the room. What she was hearing… it was impossible. Far too good to be true. She had to be dreaming or having a nervous breakdown or something. “And because of that, the deadline gets extended again?”

“As far as the law is concerned, Mrs. Brenner put this month’s payment on forbearance. She’s no doubt trying to get the paperwork filed retroactively, but the debt laws are pretty firm on this situation. You’re in the clear for another month.”

Loretta stopped in her tracks. “Oh my God.”

Earlier that year, right after a bad investment cost her a big chunk of change and she had to leave her previous job for one that didn’t pay quite as much AND not long after her mother’s funeral, Cynthia Brenner had quietly bought all of Loretta’s debts. Her student loans, the money she still had to pay on her car, and the surgery she was still paying off. All of it.

Loretta had only met Brenner a couple of times in her previous job. She was a client who had never seemed to pay her much mind beyond a few compliments here and there. Loretta mostly did her best to politely avoid the woman. She was too important a client to outright ignore, but her habit of keeping at least two bound and gagged, rubber-suited members of her personal harem with her at all times was a bit much for Loretta.

It was a shock when Loretta was informed that all her debts were now owed to Mrs. Brenner, and it didn’t take a genius to figure out what would happen if she couldn’t pay her back. Images of the woman’s rubber slaves became regular features in Loretta’s nightmares. Hoods. Armbinders. Platform boots.

Now, because of the negligence of a single lawyer, Loretta had another month. A stay of execution.

“This is a chance we can’t afford to pass up. You weren’t short of the minimum payment by that much. It’ll be tricky to earn up the rest and the next payment by the new deadline, but if you play your cards right–”

“No.”

“...I’m sorry?”

She collapsed back into her chair. “I can’t do this anymore John. I just can’t. I need… I need it to be over. To end. Even if it ends with me in a collar, it’ll still be over. And then at least I won’t have to worry about bills anymore.”

The night she thought she had missed the deadline had given Loretta her best sleep in months. Maybe even years. She couldn’t go back to tossing and turning every night. Loretta was thirty-one and convinced she looked closer to forty from all the stress of her financial situation.

“Loretta, be reasonable.”

“No. Take what you need for your fee, then I’m going to take the rest and go to the nearest casino. I’ll bet it all on black.”

“Loretta, as your accountant–”

“Do it!”

*

He kept trying to talk her out of it, of course. It was his job to talk her out of it, and Loretta appreciated the effort he put into trying to persuade her. She would keep him on if this worked. Good advice was invaluable, and she knew he was giving her good advice. That was why she left her last accountant, whose advice landed her in hot financial waters to begin with.

Still, he failed. Loretta went to the casino. At the last minute, Loretta decided to bet it all on red instead. She couldn’t say why. Then, at the last second, when she was at the roulette table and with the detached impatience of a woman with no fucks left to give, she put everything she had on one number. Nine.

The ball landed on a red, single digit number. Nine.

It took Loretta a minute of staring to understand that she won.

Things were different the next time Loretta walked into that casino.

She was dressed in a new suit, for starters. It was tailored, stylish, and accessorized to the nines. Heads turned as she strode over to the Blackjack, and almost half of those heads were turning to see her.

The other half were looking at her new slave.

Her name was Gemma. She was slender, had gorgeously brown eyes, and was a few inches shorter than her Mistress, about the same height when they both wore heels, since Loretta wasn’t going to wear anything that tall herself.

Loretta hadn’t spent much time shopping for her, she’d just gone to a local emporium and bought the first woman she liked the look of. She could buy more slaves later. On that day, the day after winning her life back, Loretta just wanted to celebrate. And buying Gemma wasn’t enough celebration for Loretta’s tastes, because her very first stop with her new slave’s leash in hand was a fetish store.

Apparently month after month of rubber-clad nightmares had affected Loretta in unexpected ways. Now, with the threat of experiencing it for herself no longer hanging over her head, Loretta couldn’t even see a nice rubber-suited gimp without getting hot and bothered.

Gemma’s main suit was bright red, a fantastic scarlet that fit tight all over the slave’s body. Oh, did Loretta love to run her hands all over her property when she had it all done up like that. Everything else–the thigh-high boots, collar, corset, armbinder, and the harness panel gag that went over her otherwise red hooded head–was black.

“Come on sexy,” Loretta whispered to her slave. She held a leash loosely in her left hand, while her right was firmly grasping at her property’s rubber-covered ass. “This place is why you’re mine, so chin up. You’re going to be my good luck charm!”

“Mmmmmmm.”

It was perhaps a little cruel to bring Gemma to a casino, since it was a gambling addiction that put her in a collar to begin with, but this was Loretta’s night and it wasn’t like she was going to let her property handle her money. She’d brought herself a set amount, and would leave if she ran out.

Loretta’s debts were squared away, her finances looking much better, and she was still left with plenty of cash to enjoy herself with.

All because one forgetful lawyer had granted her an extra month to pay off her debts. Sometimes Loretta wondered what happened to him. Maybe nothing. Or maybe he was fired. Heh, maybe Mrs. Brenner had her sights set on him now, in anger for costing her a slave she had wanted for whatever reason.

Loretta chuckled at the thought, then she sat herself down, ordered her slave down to her knees, and was dealt some cards.

It was a good night.
