“Okay, so I think from now on we can agree to stick to actual hiking trails?”

Larissa sighed. “Yeah, it was a good idea, but I really didn’t think we’d get lost this easily. It’s pretty disheartening.”

Wayne slumped against a tree and nodded. Hiking was something he and his fiancée had been talking about for years. They’d both put it in their Bumble profiles as something they enjoyed, but neither had done it more than once or twice every few years. It was more of something they were both interested in than something they actually did, and that came out no less than ten minutes into their first date. An inside joke about how much they loved hiking was born, and after a year of dating they decided to actually try going on more hikes.

That was two years ago. Now Larissa and Wayne were engaged and had done a lot more hikes. They were pleasantly surprised to discover how much they actually liked hiking together, and after two years of going to premade, mapped out trails in state and national parks, they wanted to try something a little more wild.

Wayne found Mapleflight Woods.

“That’s a weird name,” was the first thing Larissa said.

“Oh yeah, definitely,” Wayne agreed. “But it’s big, it’s only a few hours away. Privately owned, but it just opened up to the public this year. No trails but cleared of dangerous animals. It’ll just be us and whatever we take in. And other people we see, but it’s not that big yet.”

Larissa thought about it for all of ten seconds. “Let’s do it!”

They planned a whole week around it, taking vacation time and a train ride to the quiet little Midwestern corner where Mapleflight Woods were located. It was a gorgeous forest, and they came at the height of fall. The canopy and floor alike were an amazing mixture of reds and yellows, and the engaged couple were playfully tossing leaves at each other within thirty minutes, culminating in their falling into each other’s arms in a huge pile of them nestled under a particularly massive tree.

It was a pleasant surprise to find a pile like that. Larissa didn’t think leaves ever made such deep piles without being deliberately raked into the shape.

Not long after that, they noticed the compass wasn’t working. Then they saw their cell service had crapped out on them. They knew they were lost long before they admitted it out loud.

“My entire sense of direction is shot,” Wayne said. “I was fine at first, but ever since we had that lead fight I have not been able to keep track of where we’ve been going.”

“Same, but we both know not to panic, and we have food and a tent if we need it. Worst case scenario, we wait to see where the North Star is at night and we can use that to figure out where we need to go.”

They found a cabin instead.

It was in a clearing, a sudden opening in the otherwise endless canopy of half-naked trees that seemed to come out of nowhere. And there at the center of it was a picturesque log cabin, straight out of a postcard.

“The website didn’t say anything about any log cabins,” Wayne stared at the place.

“Well, if nothing else they probably know how to get out of the forest. Let’s go.”

There were lights on in the window. Actual, electric lamplight. Wayne found that reassured him as he followed Larissa to the door and stood at her side when she knocked.

The tall raven-haired woman who answered the door was dressed in a red and black flannel shirt and a pair of jeans that hugged her substantial hips. Wayne immediately snapped his head up and stepped a hair closer to his fiancée.

“Hi there,” Larissa greeted. She was reasonably tall herself, just about the same height as Wayne, but neither of them were quite as tall as the woman who answered the door. “Sorry to bother you, but we were hiking in the area and got a little lost. Do you use a map we can look at? Ours isn’t helping us and our cell service is gone.”

The woman didn’t answer right away. She only looked at the two people before her, her eyes sweeping over them from head to toe. It took only a few seconds for Larissa to feel discomforted and Wayne annoyed at the way her gaze roamed over their bodies.

Finally, she nodded. But that nod was for herself, not her visitors. Because when she met Larissa’s gaze she had only one word for her.

“No.”

“What?” Wayne demanded.

The woman crossed her arms and leaned against the door frame. “No, I won’t help you leave the woods. You’re not going to leave the woods. You can try, but soon you’ll realize it can’t be done. And when you understand that and make it back here, I expect to find the two of you on your knees when you knock on the door. You belong to me now.”

And then she shut the door in their faces. Larissa and Wayne exchanged a look before walking away as fast as they could.

“So she was fucking crazy,” Larissa said.

“Yeah, let’s avoid that cabin going forward.”

“And let’s get the hell out of this forest.”

But they couldn’t. To their increasing distress, Larissa and Wayne could not find their way out of the forest. Nor could they find any other hikers ( there had been some when they paid to enter the property), or any sign that they were close to civilization at all.

What they could find, a second and then a third time, was the crazy woman’s log cabin.

“One of us is dreaming,” Wayne finally announced. “The only other explanation is that the forest is alive and we’re trapped in it. Or that we… I don’t know, fell into another world or something. One of us has to be dreaming.”

“We’re not dreaming, we’re just lost,” Larissa’s voice was patient, but Wayne could tell she was trying to convince herself too. “We just need to wait for nightfall. We can camp, and we can figure out which way is north, and then we can figure out how to get out.”

But when the sun finally began to drop, and the moon began to come up in its place, the two immediately saw that it was the wrong moon. It was the wrong size. It was coming up from the wrong direction, and it was a deep red, almost purple color.

They stared.

“We’re not getting on our fucking knees,” Larissa declared.

“Agreed.”

The next time they found the log cabin, they found something new in the clearing. A scarecrow. Odd, because there were no crops to scare any crows away from, but there it was. An x-shaped cross posted halfway between the forest and the cabin door, with a man tied to it.

Wait a second, that wasn’t a scarecrow, that was an actual man!

“Dude, are you okay?” Wayne’s voice had raised an octave or two. He was still trying to convince himself that he or Larissa was dreaming, and it wasn’t working. The impossible situation was getting to him.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” said the man. He was dressed in overalls and a flannel shirt of his own, white and black. Around his neck was a solid black band, a ring of silver glinting at the center in the strange moonlight.  There was also rope coiled all around the man’s arms and legs, tying him to all parts of the x-shaped cross.

He wasn’t struggling. The tied up man was bound to a giant x in the middle of an inescapable forest, and he seemed to have no issue with it. Hell, the man looked downright comfortable as the unbound man and woman before him could only stare in shock and confusion.

“I’m Stan,” the man greeted. He had a salt-and-pepper beard framing his friendly smile. “Mistress posted me out here to remind you to get on your knees before you knock on the door.

“What the hell are you talking about?” It took Wayne a few seconds to realize he was the one who spoke. He barely recognized his own voice.

“It doesn’t matter,” Larissa spoke before the man could answer. “We’re leaving. We have a tent and food, we don’t need this place. We’re getting the hell out of here, we’re not looking back, and we are NOT begging that woman for anything. Let’s go Wayne.”

Wayne didn’t protest. He just followed along as his fiancée pulled him around by the arm.

“She’ll give you three days!” Called out Stan. “Then she’ll come out there and get you herself! I don’t recommend it, she ain’t especially gentle!”

Despite himself, Wayne turned his head to look back at the man just as he and Larissa made it to the trees. But what caught his attention was the door. It had been closed before, but now he could see warm lamplight framing two figures inside.

The first was the tall woman who answered the door before. Stan’s “Mistress.” She was a looking shadow in the dying light of the day, and Wayne’s attention was mostly taken up by the person next to her.

It was a woman, her silvery long blonde hair glinting faintly in the near dark. She was sitting there on all fours, naked except for the solid black band around her throat, and maybe the solid red ball at the center of her face, where her mouth was.

Wayne didn’t look back again.
